Opening a MIDI file in Logic - a problem

Is there a way to open a MIDI file in Logic without Logic automatically assigning instruments to each track?

Donald:
First of all many thanks to you and other contributors to this thread.
Here's a summary of what I've learned so far:
When you open a MIDI file, all the data concerning meter and tempo are retained.
When you import a MIDI file data concerning meter and tempo are lost.
In the unlikely event that you don't care about retaining meter and tempo data, the simplest thing is to drag the MIDI file into the Arrange page of your template. If this method gave you the option of retaining meter and tempo data, it would accomplish just what we'd all like - - a simple way of moving a MIDI file into a Logic template... I suggest writing to Apple with this suggestion. You can do this by going to the feedback page of the Apple website:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/logicpro.html
If you want to retain meter and tempo data then you can open the MIDI file while holding the option key down. (Thanks Donald!!)
This eliminates the loading of the EXS instruments Logic has decided are appropriate for your MIDI file.
However, when you go to the mixer page, you discover that you cannot create "software instrument" Channel Strips because they are grayed-out on the channel strip menu.
To fix this, you need to import the Mixer layer of the Logic template you've created for whatever virtual instrument plugins you intend to use. (In my case the multi channel Vienna Ensemble (VE) plugin and Kontakt. You do this by looking under the "import Environment" selection in the Options menu of the current environment.
You then import the Mixer level of the Environment of your Logic template. (This template should have a multichannel channel MIDI instruments wired to Audio Instruments.)
This will give you two mixer levels in the environment - - and the imported one will lack some important elements such as Output 1-2, Master, Click and PreListen.
To move these to new Mixer page select them all, hold down the option key and switch to new Mixer page. They will move to the new mixer page. Return to the now empty original Mixer page and use the "delete layer" command available under the flip menu on the upper left corner of the window.
Then you can reassign the tracks in the arrange page to the appropriate channels. (e.g VE 1 1, VE 1-2, etc.) However, the assignment menu does look a litle funky, since, in my experience, there are two VE 1-1s, VE1-2s etc.
The advantage of using multi-channel virtual instrument which works as both plugin and standalone is that you can create a pre-existing template with all your instruments loaded in it and save it. Thus if you were working with a VE Standalone as the playback device for Finale or Sibelius and you save it, you can, after instantiating VE as a software instrument in Logic, open it and it will have all your settings.
There are other alternatives - - you can open the Logic template you've made for working with multi-channel virtual instrument plugins and then - - without closing the template - - open the MIDI file. This will result in a dialog box asking if you want a new Environment or to copy the Environment of the file that is already open. If you do this you will get a result similar to what I've described above, but it will be a little weird in wholly different ways - - which you can clean up to a greater or lesser extent.
If only things were more simple: Ars Longa, Vita Brevis, I guess.
Again I suggest writing to Apple about this on their online feedback page. If enough people do this, things might be improved in this regard.

  • NEWBIE PLEASE HELP..!! Problem Opening a MIDI file

    Hi all.
Does anyone have any advice on this strange problem..??? On the Logic Pro 8 Manual it says that : +"When you open a MIDI file in Logic Pro 8, software instrument tracks are automatically created for each MIDI track"+
My problem is that when I open a MIDI file, (Standard MIDI file) some tracks get assigned to external MIDI instruments, others get assigned to Software instruments. I can't figure out how this might happen.
I really want to use the software instruments for each MIDI track, not the Quicktime Synthesizer...
    PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS...!!!!
    Thanks

Well, the thing is that I only want Logic to automatically create the software instruments tracks (EXS, EXS24, Garageband sounds, etc) every time I open a MIDI file
As a matter of fact I have a Macbook with 10.4 OSX with Logic Pro 8 and this one DOES what it says in the manual (creating the W/W instrument tracks) I just open a MIDI file and the program does all the rest..it assigns a SW instrument for each track... However, I can't do that with my iMac....
This problem is really driving me insane ....I'm a switcher from Cakewalk SONAR and I really want to use Logic....Please Help..!!

  • Opening a MIDI File

Ok, I can open a MIDI file, that's easy, but how do I stop LE 8 from automatically opening the file and using audio instruments instead of using actual MIDI channels?

    Hi,
I looked it up in the manual.
    Page 657 says:
"Note: As a default behavior, Logic Express will automatically create software instrument
tracks for each MIDI track, and assign an appropriate GarageBand instrument to each,
when you open a MIDI file. If you want to use external MIDI tracks for each MIDI track,
press Option while opening the MIDI file. "

I use Logic Pro to edit midi files. Unprocessed Midi-Files reproduced from the programm "Qmidi" with German letters ä, ö, ü ß. Once I have edited the midi-file with logic-Pro are not correctly play back the letters. This also happens when I have not made any changes in the midi file. In Qmidi I can the font / setting "Western (ISO Latin 1)" and enter these characters are correctly recognized. It must be because what makes Logic Pro from the midi file.
Thank you for your help in advance

That's clearly a bug. Please send this to Apple using their feedback form:

  • Can't use .mid file with Logic Pro 9

I've been given a .mid file from someone I know but I'm not having any success trying to access the file in Logic.
The file should just contain a piano piece he had written.
When I first downloaded the file it automatically opened with QuickTime Player. I closed this then tried various ways of getting it into Logic. Firstly I went to File > Open, and chose the .mid file. This was the result:
"Damaged project or not a Logic Pro project!
    "Search for fragments?
"Damaged projects might create problems and crashes!"
    'Search' or 'Cancel'
When I click 'Search' I'm told:
    "Read error!
"This is not a Logic Pro project!
    "No tracks found"
    'Continue'
So, is the file empty (no tracks found)?
Or, because it was not created in Logic, it can't be opened in Logic. (I think he is using a PC, not confirmed yet - I also don't know what DAW he's using, yet)
That's ridiculous though, I thought MIDI was a universal language?
I also tried dragging the file straight into a Logic project, which tells me:
    "No tracks found"
Can someone please give me a little hand!? Thank you

Two ideas, have your friend check and make sure the mid file plays on his/her system.
    and/or
If the mid file checks out good on his/her system have them compress (ZIP) the file and resend as it could have become corrupted during transfer. It can happen.
Your description of the file (zero length) sounds like it missed the last few bytes.

  • Why won't QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 open my MIDI files?

Have QT Pro 7.0.4, OS 10.4.6, Safari 2.0.3 on eMac computer. Downloaded MIDI from Classical Music Archives but file won't open. When try to open it, get message on eMac screen "QT cannot open the file tmcpsolf.mid It is not a file that QT understands (-2048)". I could open MIDI files from any source easily in OS 9.0.4 with QT Pro.
I checked MIME settings in QT preferences, and MIDI is checked as "on".
Also can't open MIDI file in eMac of piano music I saved on floppy disk from my Yamaha digital piano MIDI recorder. Get same message as above.
What can I do to get QT to open and play MIDI? Thank you.
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hello,
Sorry for such a long message, but I want to make sure you have all the correct information. Issue #1 is still unsolved. Issue #2 I solved (see below).
Issue #1: QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 won't open Midi files created by external Midi recorder. QT does not recognize Midi file.
Just to clarify, I have a digital piano without USB, so I can't connect the piano to my new eMac to record my music with a suitable computer based Midi recorder/synthesizer and related program. This is my first attempt at recording Midi on an external, not computer based Midi recorder.
I have never tried to use any Midi recording process with my old iMac, OS 9.0.4, QuickTime 5.x
A few days ago I purchased an old (but new, never been used), Midi recorder which does not have USB but it connects to my piano to record as Midi what I play and save on its built in floppy disk. I use the in and out Midi portals on my piano and Midi recorder to send signals back and forth to the recorder, and play the music back in the piano so I can hear what I just played. That part works fine. The recorder is limited to only one Midi track per file for
    recording music.
The floppy is MicroSoft DOS format which I initialized with the recorder before using it per the recorder's manual.
After recording several Midi files in the floppy, I wanted to hear them in my eMac and e-mail them. I assumed the Midi format would be recognized by eMac, regardless of the MicroSoft DOS format of the floppy, and that QuickTime would open them. Isn't .mid a generic extension recognized by Mac and QT as a Midi file?
The eMac displayed the Midi files (.mid) on the desktop (I used Imation SuperDisk external floppy drive to transfer the Midi files to eMac). When I double clicked on these files to open them, I got the message I quoted above in my first posting, that QuickTime did not recognize the Midi file.
Perhaps my recorder has some sort of code it assigns to the Midi it records that the Mac and/or QuickTime can't recognize? Or QT won't recocgnize a one track Midi file?
Do you have any guess as to why QT won't recognize my .mid files?
Issue #2: QT won't open Midi music I download from classicalarchives.com
This issue I solved a few hours ago - see below.
In my old iMac, OS 9.0.4 I would double click and listen to Midi music files at classicalarchives.com or any other url via QuickTime Pro 5.x, no problems.
I also downloaded, saved and opened them with QT 5.x
In new eMac, when I double click the Midi file on web, QT automatically opens usual player window and I can listen to Midi OK.
When I save file as "Source" from the above QT window, it is a Midi file (.mid) which QT will not open on the desktop, I get identical "not recognized" message I get with Midi recorder files.
I found a solution to opening and hearing the downloaded file as follows:
When I save Midi file via QT player window as "QuickTime Movie" (.mov), I can open it with QT and listen to it. So, Issue #2 is solved in order to listen to the Midi I download.
Thank you for your time and trouble. Please advise re Issue #1 before we close this case as "unsolved".

  • Opening Ipad2 Garageband files in Logic

Hello, bought an Ipad2 a few weeks ago to make music with. I was hoping that I would be able to transfer garage band files from Ipad to Logic on my Imac. Sadly it's not working I just get the following message (CAN'T LOAD PROJECT BECAUSE IT IS CREATED BY A NEWER LOGIC EXPRESS VERSION).
I'm running Logic Express 8.0.2, I assume if I bye the Logic 9 express upgrade it should open the garageband files. Has anybody tried this ? does it work ?
I'd also like to know the best way to connect the ipad2 to Imac so I can play/recored audio or midi into Logic. I've been looking at the iRig Midi but I'm starting to wonder if the Alesis IO would be a better choice. Anybody using these devies and can offer some feed back ?
    Thanks for any information

  • How can I import sibelius  4 midi files to logic

I would like to be able to import either wav or midi files because I have tons of scores already notated, and why input the notes again? All help appreciated, I'm new to Logic...
    Scott

    Hi,
    Here's how:
    1. Make sure the MIDI files are Standard Midi files (.SMF or .MID)
    2. Any WAV or other audio files, make sure they all get rendered at the same start point, so that you can import them and line them up in Logic correctly, and quickly.
    3. Make sure the tempo in Logic, when you Start the sessions, and BEFORE importing anything, is set to match Sibelius.

  • Can't Export Standard MIDI Files in Logic 9.1.1 .... ?!?!

    Hi Everyone,
So I just upgraded to Logic 9.1.1. I was working on a simple MIDI project pre-upgrade in which I exporting all the tracks and data as a standard MIDI file, all fine and dandy. Now today, with upgrade, I have the same project, and whenever I select all the regions and choose File>Export>Selection as MIDI file as I ALWAYS did, Logic creates a file with an extension of ".logic" instead of ".mid" and displays in Finder as "Logic Pro Project" - what the **** is going on? Is it me?
Thanks in advance for any help!!

uh oh, that sounds no good.
What happens if you just manually change the name of the file itself, ie, in the finder, replace the .logic with .mid? Obviously you shouldn't have to do such a thing, but have you tried just to check if it is indeed a real midifile, but that has been saved with the wrong creator ID?
In any case, you should report this possible bug right away at Logic feedback.

  • Is it possible to trigger an audio sample via a midi file in logic?

E.G. If i had a midi kick drum track. Could I sample an audio file of a kick drum ?
I knwo this can be done in programs like fruity loops but im not sure if logic has this ability too?

Create a software instrument track. Double click the instrument name in the channel strip to show the Ultrabeat editor. Choose the Ultrabeat instrument and then choose the default setting for importing samples, which can be chosen from Ultrabeat's patch selection menu just like any other software instrument. In the lower right hand corner of the editor you will see a button that says "full view". It chooses between a fruity loops style sequencer view and a drum synth editor view. To import your sample, you need to be in the drum synth edit view. In this view there are three sound source controls which combine to make an ultrabeat sound. The one you need to choose is the sample source in the lower left corner where you should see a picture of a waveform. Double click on the waveform to open Finder, where you can browse for the location of your sample. The name of your sample will then appear on the left side of the editor as one key of a virtual keyboard. Click on the key with your mouse and you should be able to hear your sample playback. Play all the keys / pads on your controller and one of them will trigger your sample through Ultrabeat. You can also trigger ultrabeats pattern sequencer to play the sample from ultrabeat, and then trigger ultrabeats patterns to play in sync with Logic. You can even trigger different ultrabeat patterns using notes from your MIDI controller. Put ultrabeat on several tracks and then switch between tracks while triggering different patterns on each track..while recording it all as a performance in realtime . Check out Ultrabeat. The list goes on.

  • Opening Digital Performer files in Logic 8 -- translation programs?

I have decades of Digital Performer files I want to be able to open in Logic 8 without going through a multi-step process (open in DP, save as midi, open in Logic).
Is there a translation program, a method, or even a function within Logic that will streamline the opening of Digital Performer files? There used to be a program years ago that let me open various types of files in DP, so I'm wondering if there's a new equivilant for Logic. (I do realize there will be tweaking necessary after opening, but I just want to get them opened faster and within Logic -- right now they're grayed out, of course.)

  • How to open a "wav" file in Logic 7.2.1 and then remaster?

A fellow musician wants to see if I can improve audio tracks his band recorded in Cubase SX. He has a CD with the WAV files of each of 12 audio tracks. First question - Could someone tell me how to open his files and then import them into Logic Pro so that his tracks 1-12 correspond to my audio tracks 1-12 and be in sync?
Second question - assuming I can get his tracks going what are the key ways to boost volume or "master" his tracks so that the end result, a stereo mix, is loud vibrant and "radio ready"?
I'm familiar with the mastering plug ins on the output channels of Logic. I've used "Soft Maximizer" but it seems to be compression related. Are these "rooms", available on the output channels, the only way to increase volume and aliveness?
He's doing this because the studio he's at can't seem to make a mix that he's happy with. He says the mixes lack volume and vibrancy. Thanks in advance.

Use the Audio Editor window to import the tracks. Then drag them one at a time onto Audio tracks in the Arrange window so they all align to Bar 1 1 1 1.
The fun will start if they were not recorded simultaneously as you will need to align them manually to be in sync. Good luck with that it takes time but is not impossible. Use the moveable start point in the Audio Editor to adjust the start of each wav file until they are aligned.
To improve the levels, probably the quickest way is to Normalize each track first in the Audio Editor window before you start mixing and EQ'ing them in Arrange.

  • Opening Garage Band files in Logic Express

I'm a school music teacher and have just started using Logic Express 7 to open kids' Garage Band files for tidying up and polishing.(Still a beginner with logic I'm afraid!) Have just purchased Logic Express 8 update, but haven't installed it because I heard that it won't open Garage Band 3 files. Is this true? If so, is it possible to have both 7 and 8 running independently on the computer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The original release of LE8 had a bug which required a workaround to open GB files. The subsequent 8.0.1 update fixed that. After you install LE8, go to Software Update and install the 8.0.1 update and you will be fine.

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.
