Opening a Numbers Document

When opening a Numbers document, how can I get the document to open where I last worked?

Make sure you save the document when it is in the view you want.

    Hi beverly,
Stuck how? Are you still in the print screen? If yes click "Done".
Have you tried quitting Numbers? Restarting your Mac?

  • Suddenly, all my saved Excel Worksheets are opening as Numbers documents, even though I've NEVER used the Numbers application, and even though the documents continue to be identified as Excel documents--losing years of work.  What happened?

How can I uninstall Numbers?  I've never used the Numbers application before, and suddenly all my saved Excel Worksheets are opening as Numbers documents, even though they continue to be identified as Excel documents?  I'm losing years of work.

Right click on a Excel Worksheet file, choose 'Get Info'. In the small window that opens change the 'Open with:' from Numbers to Excel. Click on 'Change All…'

  • Problem with opening a Numbers document

I have a problem with a Numbers document, which I created 3 weeks ago and step by step extended with additional functionality. I'm not anymore able to open the document. I can rename the document and maybe - I didn't try - delete the document. But when I'm clicking on the file's icon, the error message appears "Tabelle kann nicht geöffnet werden". It seems that the file is defect but how I it be revived. What steps I have to do to re-open the document?

  • I can´t open a numbers document.

    Hello,
I have a problem. I created a numbers document one month ago. Yesterday I wanted to open it again and the mac says, I need a new version. So I updated the version. But still I can´t open it because anytime I want to open the document it says, that I need a new version.
Can somebody please help me with this problem?
    Thank you

    Hi Kerstin,
If you are running Numbers for Mac with OS X Mavericks, the update to Numbers 3 did not replace Numbers 2.3 (Numbers '09)
Numbers 2.3 has been moved to a folder called iWork '09 inside your Applications folder. It works as well as it always did. The icon on your Dock was not replaced. It continues to point to the older version of Numbers.
Numbers 3 is in your Applications folder (not in a sub folder). Drag the icon to your Dock. It will become an alias. Right click (or control click) on it and Options > Keep in Dock.
With icons for both versions on your Dock, you can choose which to open.
Numbers 2 on the left (3 column chart).
Numbers 3 on the right (4 column chart).
Both versions will run happily at the same time if you wish. Just be sure which version is opening your document.
You can revert a document that Numbers 3 has 'stolen' with Menu > File > Export To > Numbers '09.

    Ian.

  • Open a Numbers Document when it is already open?!?!?

    Hello,
i use Numbers (latest Version) in a little Team.
My Problem is: One User open the Document "testname.numbers". This File is located on a server. The HD has no permissions.
OK, the User has the file open. And now comes a second user on a second computer and open the same file. BUT he became no information that the file is already open. What the f*?
User A type a information in the numbers-document and save the file and close it. User B makes the same. The information of the User (A) which saved earlyer is now lost.
In Microsoft Office, the User B becomes a warning and can open the document in "read only".
Has anyone an idea, how i can have this feature in Numbers?
Please please, sorry for my bad english.
    Thank you.

So, my opinion _is not that the Search tool is inefficient_, it is that _many users use it inefficiently_ which is not the same thing.
The thing is, I tried entering your suggested search ("network AND users") into the "Search Discussions" box on this page. I got 301 results, ranging from topics on network user accounts in the Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard forums to some in which the only time the word "network" was used in the post was in the phrase "not on a network" or something like it. Last night, it took around 25 seconds for the first results to appear. This morning, that took about 5 seconds.
I then used the advanced search option to limit the search to the Numbers forum. This in itself was not quick or easy because the new advanced search option to pick a forum is implemented with a popup menu of every single Discussions forum (probably several hundred of them) & the list is organized into nested categories & sub-categories. So it isn't a simple matter of just looking for "Numbers" in the "N" part of a single level alphabetical list, but finding it in the iWork '08 subcategory of the iWork category, among the 100 or so other "i" categories. That is a challenge because the list is very long, has many levels of indention, & the scroll rate is very touchy. The result is can take several seconds to find & select Numbers, & very careful positioning of the pointer to keep the list from scrolling by at an unreadable rate. In a browser window that is small & displays only a few tens of list items at a time, it borders on an impossible task.
But with some difficulty I did manage to limit the search to the Numbers forum & clicked the "Search" button. 30 seconds later (!!) I finally saw 8 results, ranked by relevance. The highest ranked post (47%) contained the phrase, "I am a single user, the file is not stored on a network." Next came your post in this thread with the phrase, "Try with "network AND users" (24% relevance). Next was your post in the topic, "Features we need to move from Excel to Numbers" (22% relevance). It does contain the phrase, "As far as I know, if a doc is stored on a network and two users try to work with it at the same time, the document will be destroyed." That is somewhat relevant (here, the document is not destroyed) & is hardly a definitive answer, instead expressing one user's experience. The next most relevant post takes us to a topic in which you ask users to run a script to test a workaround that may or may not avoid what actually appears to be a bug in the application.
The end result is that the search leaves me wondering if it even found the most relevant posts & takes a lot of effort just to perform. In part this is because of poor page design, in part because the search algorithm is simplistic, & in part because by their nature user posts rarely are definitive statements of fact.

  • Can't open my numbers document!

I haven't been able to open my numbers spreadsheet with my budget on it for a week now. this is the message i get.
    please help!!
I've tried duplicating the document. I've tried sending it so myself and exporting it every different way, but nothing works. I don't know what to do.

    Hi Sailor,
It is pretty amazing you got a new version without even knowing it.
In System Preferences > App Store you can turn off the automatic updates by unchecking "Install app updates" as I've done here:
If you're using Numbers across platforms and displaying dynamic output on the iPad or doing data entry there, you'll be *much* happier with Numbers 3.0 than the old version. If you're doing a lot of traditional printing of heavily formatted documents, the old version is much better.  For most day-to-day uses in between it's a toss-up.  The new version, despite its flaws, is a powerful application that can enhance productivity in ways the old version can't.
For more on the differences between the two, see the features gained, features lost, and workarounds threads, plus Apple's support document on features to be reintroduced in the coming months .

  • I downloaded the New numbers iOS and now i can't open any numbers documents

I just recently downloaded the new Mavricks update and now all my numbers Documents say i need to download the new system before opening. I alread have the new numbers system so i am unsure of what I need to do to fix it. I use numbers all day for my job so not having it is really not an option.

Go to the App Store via the Dock or by starting the program from your Applications folder. Sign in with your Apple ID/Password and type Numbers in the search box on the top right. That should let you navigate to the Numbers download.

  • Why can't I open a Numbers document saved to my MacBook Pro desktop?

I was trying to open an existing Numbers document saved to my desktop. It took me to the App Store, but I didn't have access to a Wireless network. If it needed an update, why does it require the update to open an existing/previously saved document?  Very frustrating and completely embarrassed in front of my audience!!!

  • Open Maverick Numbers Document on iPad

My wife is unable to open Numbers documents on her iPad (iOS 7) that I have created for her on my iMac (OS 10.9 Mavericks). Message says 'Spreadsheet can't be imported...   ...created with an unsupported application version'. She has downloaded the latest version of Numbers from the App Store on her iPad to cover that aspect, but message persists.
Surely this must be possible, but what needs to be done?

I am having the exact same issue. I keep everything on dropbox for work and since the updates to iOS and Maverick they are not compatible. The Numbers app on my iPhone 5 is 2.0 and the Numbers app on my iMac is 3.0, which is clearly why it doesn't work, but why would they not update both, I thought that was the whole point of being able to read and update the same documents on multiple devices through different platforms..?
Any help would be much appreciated, I desperately need this facility for my work!
    Thanks

  • How to open my *.numbers document?

I can't open my old *.numbers document I created before Mavericks and all apps update a few days ago. This is really frustrating since the document contains very important data. The document was password protected. I've seen I have 2 Numbers apps in my Applications folder, but none of this can open my document.
How can I open my old document?
    Thnx

Hmm, what about *.numbers documents that are not on my iCloud?
I need to open a document that is located on my hard drive. When I try to open it using latest Numbers (3.0.1) it says "The document can't be opened.". But when I try to open this document using Numbers 2.3 it says "The document does not have a valid format."
    Any ideas?
I really need to open this document.
    Thnx

  • Numbers won't let me open a Numbers document - HELP!

I sent a good portion of the day yesterday working in Numbers. Not a bad little ap. Lots of good potential once we get the bugs worked out.
Here's the bug I ran into... I formatted cells in a column to a pop up menu - SLOW. I changed them back to text. Tried adding a chart. Then the whole ap crashed and shut down. Restarted and went to open again, says the document cannot be opened.
Has anyone had this issue as well? I was hoping to open the package and extract the data to use in a new sheet as a lifeboat, but there isn't anything in there to do that with.
    HELP!

Numbers has been slow all day working in a converted file with half a dozen tables.
My system crashed this evening after Apple BackUp attempted a backup that would have filled my ghard drive (I don't know Backup very well and should not have set this up yet).
This error forced Mail to Shut Down and in my attempts to rectify the problem, I quit all running apps and rebooted. My Dock has reverted back to something like the original configuration, but worse..
I am now getting the same "Cannot open File" when I attempt to open it in Numbers.
The irony of this being connected to something rleated to the backing up of files has me amused and distressed all at the same time.
Awaitng a recovery procedure from Apple or a workaround from anyone reading this.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Why do my Numbers documents not open?  Says I need new version, but already updated.

I updated Numbers, but now when I try to open a Numbers document, it tells me I need a newer version available at the app store.  The app store tells me I am up to date.  What do I do now?

Be sure you're opening the document with the version of Numbers that is in your main Applications folder.  (The old version is still on your Mac, in a subfolder named iWork '09, and any icon you had on your Dock still points to that old version).

  • Can't open Numbers document with newest version

I have the newest version of numbers installed (3.0.1- at least, I think this is the most updated!), but when I try to open a numbers document, it says I need a newer version of Numbers to be able to open it. What do I need to check/do to access my documents?
Well, nevermind. I think just quitting numbers and trying to open the document again worked.

    Hi Ben,
Just a thought. Is this something to do with the document name (all those dots ".") ?
Right click (or control click) on the document in Finder and choose Get Info. What does that show under Open with?

    Ian.

  • Can't open Numbers document.  Says I need to update, Can't open Numbers document.  Says I need to update

I'm desperately trying to open a Numbers Document, but it keeps telling me I need to up-date.  However, everything is up to date.

It looks like you are opening the old Numbers version by mistake. The Mac App Store kept the old Numbers version when you installed the most recent Numbers version in case you want to use it again.
To fix this, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and drag the new Numbers version to the Dock, so you can access to it quickly. Then, open Numbers and open your document from there. You will not get that message anymore.
An easier solution would be to remove the old Numbers version, but I do not recommend you to do it. Some users have complained about the lack of features of the new version, so you may want to use the old version in the future
