Opening a PDF file out of a project

Hello there,
I am trying to open a PDF in Adobe Reader out of a Captivate
Project. I decided to do this through a clickbox. This clickbox is
set up to open an URL or a file. I decided, it has to open a PDF.
When I click on that clickbox, it opens my PDF file. So far so
good. But the PDF is opened by the Reader-Plugin, which is ebedded
in the Internet Explorer. That was not my intention.
My Question is now, what do I have to do to let the PDF file
open in the stand alone Adobe Reader?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions,
Markus

Hi Markus
This is an issue that has been seen quite a bit in the web
world. If you were to Google the issue, you would also see it
exists for Microsoft Word too. Again, it's not something one may
configure easily. I do believe it stems from the File association
in Windows.
Yes, you may configure your Acrobat Reader so links to PDFs
from web pages open in the stand alone reader. But that's only
changing behavior for you. Not for others. How the PDF displays for
others is defined individually on their own PCs. My thoughts are
that if we could influence this behavior, what would stop a hacker
from influencing malicious behavior? And there, I believe, is the
rub.
Cheers... Rick

You might need to choose 'Check for Updates' options in the Help menu.

  • Published Project for MAC (.app) and will not open external PDF files

I have two captivate (7.x) projects that I published as Win .exe apps, and they work fine.  Published the same two projects as MAC (.app) and when I run the app on the iMac, and click a click box to open an external PDF, nothing happens. The PDFs are located in the "root" folder with the .app file.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the feedback. I was able to open some PDF files on Acrobat 5 that I recently scanned at a Fed Ex office with no issue whatsoever. I could extract pages, delete pages, etc, the software Acrobat 5 worked fine.
What I wonder is there a way I can make a change to a PDF file that will then allow me to open it in Acrobat 5? I have a gut feeling there is an adjustment that I can make in Adobe Reader after opening it that will then make the file accessible in Acrobat 5. I am playing with it but no luck thus far.

  • Hyperlinks to pdf files not working when project is exported out as SWF and uploaded to server

    hI all
I'm using CS5 and i have hyperlinks to pdf files in my indesign project. However when i export to SWF, although the links work locally, they do not work when i upload all the relevant folders and files and test it from a server the links to the pdfs can not be found, the error messages indicates its looking for the files on my hard drive. I have also noticed that if i copy all the relevant folders and files and exported swf to a different directory and then launch swf from there the links do not work there either.
Other than seperately uploading each pdf indvidually on to the server and then creating a hyperlink to it from the local indesign project i don't know what else to do.
    Any advice much appreciated.

I have your same problem, but didn't consider uploading the PDFs and then linking to them. I'm willing to try it. Let me know if you ever found a better way, ok?
    Thanks.

  • Javascript that will allow a viewer to open a .pdf from a .exe published project

I had to publish my project as a .exe file because I needed
to burn it to a CD for our employees who don't have access to our
network. Within the project, I have several click boxes that need
to open .pdf files that the employees will need to open and view.
However, when I publish the project and click on the click boxes,
the .pdfs try to open in IE and I receive a "page can't be
displayed" error. I called Adobe Tech Support and they told me that
as long as I'm publishing as a .exe, my clickboxes can't open .pdf
s or any other standalone files. (I really need the autorun
feature, so I can't publish to Flash).
Does anyone know a javascript that I could use to make my
tutorial open the .pdf files when a user clicks on a click
    box?

Hi sheriln and you too Rick
I am shocked at Tech Support saying you can't do this
. reason is that I build most of my stuff in exe
output and have no problem in getting pdf/doc/xls etc. to open out
of the exe package. The only trick is to physically type in the
EXACT full path of the file you want opened and when publishing for
CD you might really want to check out the cd drive designation on
your client machines e.g. my cd drive is drive E so a Sample.pdf
file would be opened as E:/ProgramFiles/TLDP/Sample.pdf. Just make
sure the file is available at the destination and type this path
into the open URL or File box.
Cheers and good luck (Rick, stay well)

  • When openning a PDF file, a new tab will open but it will be blank, it does not download or open any pdf files, this just started the last 3 days....!!!!

    Hi,
I am on the verge of deleting Firefox from my computer as it has wasted hours of my time, and none of the online trouble-shooting answers are of any help.
Until recently I could open PDF files in my browser window, and today its impossible to open any pdf file, it will not even download if I choose to download it.
This issue has been going on and off for nearly a year, and I downloaded Nitro PDF add-on to solve it previously as the Adobe reader add-on didn't do anything. Today In the options menu of applications where I can select the program I want to open the PDF files with I can no longer find the NitroPDF reader as an option, so I choose the Adobe add-on and no matter how many re-starts it refuses to initiate any PDF files, all I get is a open and empty new tab.
Internet explorer opens PDF files fine, so I know its not computer related.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate, Firefox Version 19.0.
If there is a way of fixing this, please help because currently I am at the end of my patience.
    Regards,
    Emre

Hey thanx for the help, it worked like a charm.
I think firefox changed the application lay out, as I used to be able to choose my PDF opener from the list at " Adobe Acrobat Forms Document' where I could choose Nitro-PDF reader, but it has now moved all the way to the bottom like you suggested to the obvious place of "Portable Document Format" section.
If someone didn't tell me , I wouldn't have scrolled all the way down to be able to find it... it really should be with all its cousins up the top...
    Cheers again..

  • How do I get Adobe Acorbat to open a .pdf file from a sharepoint library without having to checkout the file

I have a customer that is using Adobe Acrobat pro version 10.1. When they try and open a .pdf file from a SharePoint site, the user is prompted to check out and open the file or open the file. Is there a way to get Adobe Acrobat to open the .pdf file without prompting to check out or open?
    Thanks

This is mostly a lion thing, rather than a PSE thing. To disable applications opening where they left off last time for all the programs on your computer, go to system preferences>general and untick this box:
You can also do on a per-program basis, but it's more complicated and the best thing to do is to search around for directions on the web and see which way is least uncomfortable for you.
There's an odd little glitch in PSE that it opens the last image you had open, even if you closed it before quitting last time. Adobe says this is correct behavior, but of course it isn't.

  • How to open a PDF-File in a browser with 50% screen view and without any modification rights?

    Hello everyone,
i have the following problem. I would like to open a PDF-file on my web-page in a new window but this file should be shown without any option to Print, Save, Copy or resizing option (Increase and Decrease in percentage size).
Is this actually possible. The perfect solution would be if the the buttons to print, save, copy, increase/decrease would not only be disabled but completely blinded out. My perfect solution would look like below so that the user can only navigate through the pages but he/she cannot do anything else.
Hopefully, someone can help me out.
    Thank's a lot,

    Hi Alexandre,
I don't think this is possible with the current APIs that
HTMLLoader exposes. (Unless webkit supports object tags that takes
the source data in base 64 encoded form, which I think is unlikely)
But it is a good feature to have. Please file a feature

  • Can't open ANY pdf files. Updated to 10.1.8--still "Access Denied."

    Hello everyone,
I am currently unable to open any PDF files.
I recently did a clean re-install of Windows 7 (restored my Toshiba Satellite to out-of-the-box state).
After that, I restored all of my personal files from an external HD.
Now, every time I try to open a PDF, Adobe Reader gives me the following message:
"There was an error opening the file. Access denied."
The only solution I've been able to find online has been this:
Edit > Preferences > General> Clear "Enable Protected Mode at Startup"
    Also,
Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced)> Clear "Enable Enhanced Security"
Neither of these has fixed my problem.
I also updated to the lastest version--10.1.8--with no success.
I also re-downloaded and installed PDF Creator and its companion, PDF Architect. Curiously enough, I can't open any PDF in that program either. I'm not sure if there is some global setting I'm missing or something.
Access to these files is critical to my work, so any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Lauren

I updated from within the Adobe Reader X program (Help > Check for Updates) and it tells me: No updates available. Installed: Adober Reader X (10.1.8) MUI
Is 11.0.5 something I would have to access another way?
Also, I'm still not sure if that would fix my problem. It seems most people with the "Access Denied" error had it fixed with the very first 10.1 update, and I have 10.1.8, so I'm not sure what's causing mine.

  • Adobe Reader 9 will not open any pdf files

I am running Windows 7 and use Adobe Reder frequently. Never had a problem. Last week, whenver I try to open a PDF file, I get a warning box "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
The only thng that changed recently was a couple large Windows updates... I am always suspect when a large update occurs. I uninstalled the Reader and Download Manager and ree-installed themm. No change in performance.
I checked the registry key - it looks correct based on other posts.
Does anyone have any suggestions what else to try??

I've got the same problem. I'll look forward to solving this on this thread.
It really sucks- I have a ton of pdf files, and can't save them to Documents or send them out of the Adobe file.

  • Adober Reader suddenly won't open any PDF files (Mac)

I had an old version, I downloaded the latest one, upgraded to the newest, even tried taking that one out and downloading an older version. It doesn't matter which version I seem to have, it won't open any pdf files from the web.
I use a Mac, and Safari. It used to always load PDF files fine, one random place said I had to update it so I did and since then, lately it'd crash and close all Safari windows when loading a PDF or trying to copy something from a PDF. The smart Mac message I have says it could be related to an Adobe Plug in. However, now it won't even load PDF files at all, it always goes to a white page. Nothing happens.
What do I do?? I can't even save the PDF's as individual files and view then in Preview as an alternative option. It's a link online and normally would work. What happened??
    HELP!
    I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
I've always used Safari, it's Version 5.0.5 (5533.21.1 if that means anything).
Acrobat Reader, currently an old version 9.4.0 download. BUT, I had also the 10.0.1 version which also doesn't work. When I had that 10.0.1 version and checked for updates, there was an update (.3 I think?) and I did that and that also doesn't work!
Why did it suddenly stop working?
What can I do to fix it ASAP?
Only with 9.4.0 version I can go to Help and "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" - I click that and the only box I can select is "Adobe PDFViewer Safari Plugin - View, fill-in and collaborate on Adobe PDFs within Safari"  - I click continue and it tells me there's "No missing components detected. Repairs are not needed." The only option is to click "OK".
With any newer version of Adobe Reader, under Help there is no option to "Repair Adobe Reader Installation". So... I can't even try that with a new version.
I am at a loss for solutions. Hope someone here can help! Thanks!

There are several things you can do. My first step would be to repair permissions. If that doesn't work log on as a different user. If all works properly then you have a corrupt preference file (most likely) or a corrupt user font installed in your user Library (less likely). If that doesn't work download Applejack. Have it repair the disk, remove all system caches and user caches. Then have it check all system and user preference files. Remove any preference files that are corrupt. Reboot and see if your system is working properly.

  • HELP! opening a pdf file and using page view

    Hi everyone!
I'm doing a school project in which I'm trying to develop an app that opens a pdf file from the device memory (ipad or iphone) and lets the user turn pages forward and backward by swiping on the screen. Although I have very basic knowledge of C++ and Objective C programming, I find myself completely lost and don't know how nor where to start. I'd be pleased if you could help me or at least give me a starting point to develop my app.
    Thank you

  • Why am I unable to select within the URL bar of a new tab after opening a .pdf file in Firefox 4?

    To repeat the problem:
1.) Open a .pdf file in Firefox 4
2.) Open a new tab by using the (+) tab button
3.) Try to select within the URL bar (unsuccessful)
I cannot seem to direct my browser to a new website in a new tab after viewing a .pdf file within the browser.

Restore your default toolbar by going to Customize - Restore Default Set. I just found it out myself.

  • Adobe Illustrator CC (CS6, CS5.1) incorrectly opens a PDF file.

    Hello,
I have a problem. The customer sent me a graphic in PDF, which he wanted for us to print on textiles. I opened the graphics in Adobe Illustrator CC, edited and put into print.
After a customer complained about the flag at us and when we found out where she could be a mistake, I found that Adobe Illustrator can not open the PDF correctly. With this error, I met for the first time. More can be seen on video here: http://screenr.com/2ZUN
PDF file is available here: http://goo.gl/oljbSs
This is a bug Illustrator? Because PDF file is correct PDFX/1a file.
Or is there any other way to open a PDF file in order to keep the look?
Thanks so much for all the answers.

It's not really a bug. It's an uneducated customer (what a surprise).  :+)
Now you have something to add to your document "how to prepare files" for your service.
    That's what I have,
but what I say. No one that does not follow.
When we say that we need the data in a different format,
let us send graphics otherwise, most will say that it will be printed
elsewhere, where these "other requirements" does not require them.
But it is already a different thing.
I just have to hope that this created PDF files will not be much, because
for the last 5 years since opening the PDF files in Illustrator and regulates I had no problem (to small gradients, which I solved by saving PDF and Postscript file Jeko that open in Adobe Illustrator)
Thanks so much for your feedback.

  • Problems opening & printing pdf files created on a Mac

I am at my wit's end! I recently upgraded to a new version of Acrobat and suddenly a lot of my clients could no longer open my pdf files. I uninstalled the latest version of Acrobat and reinstalled an older version (Acrobat 8.1.3). Some clients started being able to open my pdf files but others could not. So I started using the Acrobat Share server and sending links. Some of my clients cannot open those either and many cannot print even if they can open the files that way. I personally also cannot print from the Acrobat Share server. The pdf files print out with all the surrounding graphics and application design elements. I also can't open the pdf files that I created on my Mac using my PC laptop running Vista. I have tried opening and printing both pdf files and the Acrobat Share links from my Mac and my PC laptop running Vista, to no avail.
I was under the impression that compatibility problems between Macs and PCs were largely a thing of the past. I was also under the impression that the whole point of exchanging pdf files was that pdf files are cross-platform compatible. Not only am I am losing tons of valuable time, I may be losing credibility with my clients (especially since I have an IT background). I desperately need to know what version of Acrobat I should be running on my Mac so that when I scan documents into my Mac, the pdf files that are created are completely 100% compatible with both Mac and PC operating systems regardless of what operating system and what version of Acrobat my clients are running. I also need to be sure that those same pdf files I create on my Mac can be seemlessly printed out from either a Mac or PC regardless of the operating system or Acrobat Reader version. If anyone can help me get to the bottom of this, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks.

This file downloaded and works fine for me in Preview on both OS X 10.5.7 and 10.4.11 (and opens in Acrobat Pro 9.1.1 and 8.1.5, and the latest version of Reader on both versions of the OS). As expected.
If you're printing from Acrobat.com by right clicking in the image area and selecting Print, don't. This isn't printing the PDF, it's printing the Flash frame that contains, as you've noticed, buttons and other elements. (Adobe's Mac Flash plugin is notoriously buggy.) Direct your clients to download the file by selecting the download button, not by right clicking and printing.
Again, your PDF file is fine.
