Opening a PDF from the Web

hi i am trying to open acrobat reader with a document by specifiying it in the command line, such as
acrord32 http://www.domain.com/file.pdf.... however this does not seem to work??
Acrobat says "There was an error opening this document. The filename, directory name, or volume syntax is incorrect."
however if i try
acrord32 c:\file.pdf... this works fine.
Does anyone know how to open a web pdf through the command line?
Regards.

See if you can delete any Adobe PDF plugins from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/. Then quit and re-open your web browser and try again.

  • How can I launch or open a pdf from the Web using Reader X?

Before I upgraded to Adobe Reader X, I could click on a file to download from the web and it would give me the option to Open, Save or Cancel. Now that I have upgraded, I only have the option to Save or Cancel. Often I would rather Open the document to see it before deciding to save it or not. Is there a Setting or Preference somewhere that will bring back the Open option? btw, I'm using Windows 7 as my OS.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There is a 3rd party application, pdf-RecoverPro, that will let you lock the file to printing, changing, etc. You set two passwords, one to let the user view it and one to unlock the restricted features. Just provide the first password and send the file. You can try the demo version. It just saves one page in demo mode.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Opening pdfs from the web

    Hello,
I am having a wierd issue with pdfs from the web.  I have adobe acrobat pro 9 (patched up to date) and I have enabled the 'do not open in browser' setting.  When I click a pdf link, it opens acrobat 9 as it should but the file name/file type is not .pdf.  I do not have reader installed and cannot figure it out.  The main issue is when I click the email link, it sends the link for the unknown file rather than the .pdf as I intended.
The short term work around is to save as and reopen the newly saved .pdf.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Go to Adobe Acrobat Reader Preferences and, under Internet, it asks if you want to display PDFs in Acrobat Reader (or Acrobat Pro, etc.). If checked, uncheck the box. Then CTRL-click on a PDF file and select "Open With". If you hold down the Option key at this point, this Open With" will change to "Always Open With". Select Preview. That should do it. Watch out for Reader or some other Adobe programs that ask if you want to make Reader the default PDF viewer when you open them. Always answer "NO".

Click Go. If you see this file:  AdobePDFViewer.plugin

  • My Mac won't print a pdf from the web

My iMac will not print any pdf from the web. The printer (an ho Photosmart plus) will only print a blank shet of paper.

Try saving the file then, then open Preview and open the file and try printing again. If if the quality is still bad then it's the file itself.

  • IE stops working when trying to open a PDF on the web.

I have checked the add-ons and Adobe Reader is enabled. I have the file AcroIEHelperShim.dll installed. When I try to open a PDF from a web page, IE stops working. What to do?

    Thanks for your reply.
IE version 9.0.8112.16421; Adobe Reader version 10.1.3. Only in the last week IE stops responding when I try to open a .PDF file from the web – eg bus route map, catalogue etc.  The messages sometimes say “error in preview handler” and sometimes “runtime error – abnormal program termination” – each time the program is terminated. The Reader opens any previous saved files OK, both downloaded from web or via email. Occasionally one from the web displays, with the error message over the top, but am unable to scroll the document or picture, enlarge it etc. I tried copying the PDF file to put on the desktop, but all that copied was the icon for the file.

Raghu: I would request to refer to our  Support portal and user forums for more information on this.
Raghu: However, you can try reinstalling the product and check if it works.
Raghu: I can understand your concern, however, the product is out of our support.
stephanie: According to adobe forums that doesn't work.
    This is completely ludicrous.

    Your posting somewhat confused me.
It sounds like you have two versions of Acrobat installed. You say you own Acrobat 9. You also say you installed a version of Acrobat  CS 5.5. Does that mean you installed the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 on your computer as well? There is no such product as  Acrobat CS5.5. CS5.5 would install Acrobat X.
However, if you had installed CS55 you may have to open at least one of the other CS5.5 applications before you can open Acrobat X. That's because Acrobat X is not well integrated into the Creative Suite.
    Am I understanding your situation?

  • Unable to read pdfs from the web on my mac

i've read all the advice about re-installing Adobe Flash (and deleting past versions) and have followed the advice (and restarted my computer) but to no avail.  When I try to open a pdf from a website I only get a black screen.  Any advice?

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Saving PDF files after opening in Firefox from the web?

When I open a PDF file from my credit union it displays as an HTML document. When I try and save it, it also is an HTML without an option to save it as PDF. IE works fine in this situation. I have selected to open the PDF file in a separate Adobe X window but does not do so.

    @masood131 - A few questions:
Are the pdf files without a thumbnail password protected? (Probably not but just checking since we will not be able to provide a preview for such a file).
If you click on the blank thumbnail to view the individual file page do you see a larger preview image, or is that blank too?
If you refresh the browser page does the thumbnail image show?
If you upload the file a second time do you see a thumbnail image?
If there is a problem with a specific file feel free to share a link with me via a private message and I can investigate further.

  • Why can't I open a pdf from a web-site

Windows 7 Home is my operating system.  Internet Explorer 10 is my browser.  I cannot open a pdf file off my VISA account web-site.  I have downloaded and agreed to the latest Adobe Reader XI (I also have Adobe X, should I uninstall it?)    When I try to open the pdf file which is my monthly VISA statement, I get this message:  "To help protect your security, your web browser has blocked this website from displaying non-secure content."  I have also turned off the pop-up blocker.  Nothing works.  Can anyone help.  I am a novice on computer technology, so I don't know much about the way the computer works (my husband is the expert in this household, but he's recovering from heart surgery and is not yet able to think through these situations).  I thought I already posted this problem, but I can't find my post.

Firefox is a good browser, but it comes with its own PDF viewer, which may not display PDF files correctly.  See http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1158136
If you want to continue to use Internet Explorer, you may want to lower its security settings; see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/Change-Internet-Explorer-Security-settings

    Hi bdreed51,
Would you provide more information about your problem so that we can help you?
Did you use Safari (the default web browser for iOS) on your iPad/iPhone to try to (a) open a PDF document in Adobe Reader for iOS or (b) download a PDF document to your iPad/iPhone by tapping a link or button in a web page?
Is a PDF document already opened in Safari?  What do you see on the screen as a result?
