Opening a PDF in indesign

How can I open a PDF into indesign and still be able to make changes to the document. Indesign wasn't allowing me to save so I didn't know any other option other than exporting it as a PDF

Unless the PDF has been saved with the native ID data embedded, it will not be editable.

Why after so many years, Indesign still couldn't open an PDF????
    I really need this function!
Hopefully Adobe couldn't solve this problem in future version!
PDFs are designed to be a FInal file format. They are never intended to be edited in anyway.
Adobe don't support this function for many reasons.
InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop or any other Adobe product is not a multi-purpose PDF editor and you shouldn't be opening a PDF in Illustrator or Photoshop unless that PDF was specifically made with those programs.
To open a PDF in InDesign you need specialist software as mentioned above.
The correct workflow is to edit the existing InDesign document.
If you don't have that original InDesign document, then you need to recreate it from the start.
If you don't want to do that - then you need to buy the software that Converts the PDF to InDesign.

  • What plugin do I need to open a PDF in InDesign?

What plugin do I need to open a PDF in InDesign? I have twice lost my changes in an InDesignfile but I have saved in in PDF form.  I want to open it in InDesign but it says a plugin may be missing.

You can't OPEN a PDF file in InDesign. This has never been possible.
You can PLACE a PDF file. A placed PDF is treated as a graphic, you cannot edit it. If you choose Import Options, you can choose which page(s) of the PDF to place.

  • Installed Acrobat Pro 9 - requires password to open any PDF & botches InDesign exports to PDF

Installed CS4 on my new Mac, using the downloaded installation file. Everything works except Acrobat. I uninstalled Acrobat & reinstalled it. Same problems remain:
1a. Everytime I open a PDF, I get this message:  "Adobe Acrobat Pro wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this." I have to enter the username & password for my computer to open every PDF. Then they open correctly.
1b. If I open Acrobat from the Applications folder, without opening a file, I get the same message & must enter username & password to open Acrobat.
    2. From InDesign, I export PDFs using File > Export. The PDFs have little rectangles for about half the text in the entire document. I routinely export both hi-res (Print Quality) and lo-res (Smallest File Size) PDFs in InDesign & this happens with all of them.
Most of the work I do results in PDFs. None of them have password protection or other security. I don't see anything in Preferences that looks like it would relate to these issues. Help, please!

Go the the Applications -> Utilities folder. In there you will find the Disk Utility app. When you run that application, you can select your hard drive. Then click on the Fix Permssions button.

  • Opening a PDF into InDesign.

Hello, I'm new to InDesign and need help importing an existing PDF to modify. I tried following the instructions here: http://bim.wikispaces.com/file/view/How+to+Import+and+Edit+PDFs+in+Adobe+InDesign.pdf , but do not have the option of opening from "Place" -- The Place option in in gray still.
    Help?

File > Place... is not available?
And you do understand that you cannot change the content of the PDF inside InDesign, right? You can scale or crop, but nothing else with a placed PDF.

I cannot open it in indesign.
    I got an error message
    Any help pleasE?
    Thank you

I represent Recosoft Corporation the creators of PDF2ID. PDF2ID converts PDF, Illustrator and WIndows XPS files to native editable InDesign files. Depending on your InDesign version there is PDF2ID v3.5 for InDesign CS4-CS6 support and PDF2ID v4.0 built specifically for InDesign Creative Cloud (or v9.0). I'm updating this post to mention that PDF2ID v4.0.1 was released in June 2014 which added support for ID CC 2014 (or ID v10.x onwards). This was a free release for v4.0 users from Recosoft.

  • Help - need to open a PDF in Indesign - anyone have the PDF2DTP Xtension, please ?

I just require  one PDF converting to InDesign (5 or 6) due to corrupt source file.
If anyone has the appropriate extension from Markzware and can convert the PDF, please contact me - I'd be eternally grateful.
    Many thanks.
    NW

I think you're asking someone to break their license for the Markzware PDF2DTP XTension. That would be illegal.
    I'm locking this discussion.

  • How do I open a pdf in Outlook 2010?

I have Acrobat 7.0 Standard and cannot open pdf documents from Outlook 2010 e-mails.  The error message reads that no valid Acrobat serial number found.  Acrobat quits (after clicking OK).
Please advise how to fix this problem.

  • Opening a PDF in a specific page from a PDF created in indesign

Hello, I'm working with CS4 and I need you to click on a button, or from a "hyperlink" in a text, open a pdf file but for a given page.
I can not change the target pdf and also I have to access a single pdf into multiple pages, put an example
persone one speaks at the pdf 1, on page 14
person two speaking in pdf 1, on page 15
I wish that when you click on the person 1 opens pdf 1 on page 14, and when you click on the person 2 opens pdf 1 on page 15
    Thanks in advance
    mateo

Thanks, I had not noticed in the new dialogue coming out. Thank you very much. A greeting.
    Muchas gracias

    Rectification
ohhh, no, the page references are to an indesign document, not a PDF
I have not indesign files where you created the PDF to which I have to jump and I can not add bookmarks to pdf, pdf files are protected.
    thanks

  • 'failed to open the PDF file' error - Indesign CS3 on Mac

    Hi,
Whenever I place PDFs that were created by any other app besides indesign or Illustrator I get a 'failed to open the PDF file' error, previously these PDFs were fine to place but all of a sudden they're not... Help?
I'm not too keen on opening in Illustrator and resaving for the rest of the foreseeable future either...

    Thanks for the reminder, Scott.

  • Opening and editing a PDF in INDESIGN

I am trying to edit a newsletter that was created by someone else using INDESIGN.  It is now a PDF.  I downloaded the free 30-day trial version of INDESIGN and cannot even open the PDF using said software.  Can someone please offer any suggestions or ideas on how I can open and edit this PDF?  Thanks.

    No can do...
ID will Place a pdf, not edit it.
There is a plug in, PDF2ID, might be cost justifiable if you are going to do this occasionally (Really bad idea, really bad)
There is a widely known program which will open the pdf, widely frowned upon, strongly discouraged by all who represent Adobe...it is one of their flagship programs.
Save the pdf as a Word file, Place the Word file, rebuild that file from scratch, tedious. ..

How do I open a pdf book cover file using Acrobat XI into Indesign CC?  Everytime I try, it says I am trying to open a file that has been saved wrong.

PDF files cannot be natively opened in InDesign. They can only be placed as graphics.

  • Opening a (InDesign) Acrobat pdf in InDesign

    PC XP 1mg
I did extensive work on a document
in my INDESIGN CS3 trial version.
I closed it and it was not saved properly.
However before closing, I sent a pdf to some one
and I am able to open the pdf in Acrobat.
How can I open the the Acrobat pdf
in my INDESIGN program so I can work on it again?
(error message says the is a plug in missing)
    Thanks
    Bill

PDF is an end product. It doesn't contain all the information that the
originating ID file had. You can certainly use a PDF to help reconstruct
your document, but don't expect to find a little Indesign file packed
away inside the PDF. It's gone.

  • Interactive PDF InDesign - how do I create button to open a PDF in a new window?

    Hi all
I'm creating an interactive PDF in InDesign CS5.
This PDF contains a button I've made that links to another, separate, PDF file.
This is all working fine - trouble is, when I click the button to open the second PDF file, the first PDF automatically closes.
Is there any way to make the second PDF open in a new window, keeping the first PDF open?
Your help would be much appreciated!

It requires adding JavaScript in Acrobat. It cannot be done in InDesign. You should ask in the Acrobat Forum.
