Opening a pdf or pages document

In automator what is the name of the action that allows you to open a document (pages or PDF) and use then in a workflow,
For example, i need to display a message, terms and conditions document on startup to all users,
How can this be done using automator?
Thanks

The "Open Finder Items" action will launch the application and open the document. Note that a user can just close the application or document, or push the window aside. If you are wanting to have a user accept your terms before they are logged in, a login hook running a shell script might be the way to go.

  • Can I open more than one Pages document at a time with the IOS app?

This sounds crazy, but I can't find how to open more than one Pages document at the same time when using the Pages app on IOS.
It's easy on the Mac, but on my iPad? Can't seem to do it!
I'm working on a project where I'm writing one document, but having to frequently cross-refer to another. Having to continually open and close each document, one at a time, on my iPad is driving me mad!
Am I missing something really obvious? Can anyone help please?

Many thanks, that's really useful. I've saved the document I'm referring to as a PDF and can now work exactly as you described.
As you say, it's not elegant, but it does work
Just need to ensure my fingertips are very dry, as I fear any slight 'catching' with a four finger swipe and my iPad will fly across the room / train / office

  • Can i open a pdf in pages?

can i open a pdf in pages?

PDFs are not made for editing but you can import a PDF as an image into Pages. If the PDF is more than one page you'll need to open it in Preview & copy it page by page from the thumbnail pane into your Pages document.

  • I close the textedit programme , open Pages, click on the 09 pages file to be opened and the message "The document "7-09 receipts" could not be opened. TextEdit cannot open files in the "Pages document"

I close the textedit programme , open Pages, click on the 09 pages file to be opened and the message "The document “7-09 receipts” could not be opened. TextEdit cannot open files in the “Pages document”
What's this??? How do I open the pages doc???   Kalavati

You have obviously not done what you think you have done.
You have tried to open a .pages document in TextEdit which can't read them.
If you are confused which program you are in look to the top left of the menu.
You can either drag the .pages file onto the Pages icon on the Dock, open it from within Pages' Open dialog, double click on it or right mouse click > open with.

  • Cannot open, share or download Pages document from iPad or iCloud

    Hi,
My girlfriend's sister is having some trouble where one specific pages document will not open and we cannot do anything with it (i.e. open, save as PDF, email as word file etc).
In iCloud you get the error "You need a newer version of pages to open this document".
On the iPad, error is "Document can't be opened".
She has pages version 1.7.2 on the iPad which is the latest version in the Apple Store.
I managed to get a pages file (or package) onto my PC to have a look at it and it is in the form of a folder called "name.pages-tef" and inside are the following:
If I open Index.db with notepad I can see her notes but they're surrounded by copious amounts of nonsensical code. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

The following link gets into the real details of the different file formats for Pages documents (there are three versions).  The "-tef" file format is specifically for iOS and is translated to a mac format when using the file on a mac.  One question is how was the file created?  On a mac or on the ipad?
At any rate, around half way through the article is the beginning discussion of the -tef format.  This may explain some of your issues.

'''FIRST''' Install a new version of Acrobat.
    Then....
    1. Go To '''Firefox''', '''Preferences'''
    2. Click the''' Applications''' tab
    3. Scroll down to''' PDF File'''
    4. Under '''Action''' click on the drop down menu next to it.

  • Is it possible to open a password protected pages document made on my mac on my iPad?

I can't find the answer anywhere in the Pages documents or googling, so I thought I'd ask here. I own Pages on my ipad, but not my imac. The ipad version won't create a password protected file, but the mac version will. Could someone who has Pages on both their mac and ipad do a quick test for me to answer this. It should be as easy as:
    1) create and save a password protected document on the mac Pages
    2) sync it through icloud to the ipad.
    3) try to open it on the ipad Pages.
    4) report back
If the answer is yes, I'll probably buy Pages for the mac, but if not, probably won't.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

  • Can't open Acrobat pdf files in document library - SBS 2011

I've uploaded some Acrobat PDF files to a document library in the companyweb (SharePoint 2010 Foundation website) on SBS 2011. But if I click on one of them in the standard view, acrobat opens and displays a message “The URL you have provided could not be
reached. Please verify that the URL is correct and that the network location is reachable.” I'm using Acrobat Reader XI 11.0.2 and Internet Explorer 10.
I have tried a few suggested solutions, eg to edit the docicon.xml file to include <Mapping Key="pdf" Value="AdobePDF.png" OpenControl="AdobeAcrobat.OpenDocuments"/>, check that the WebClient service is running, and
Use Remote Interfaces permission is set on the SharePoint site. But no luck.
I don't know if this is a problem with SBS 2011, or Acrobat, or Internet Explorer. Interestingly the pdf opens OK in Chrome. It looks like it is trying to edit the document instead of open it in the acrobat reader.
    Anyone know of a solution?

I have found one possible solution. In my case the site was brought into Sharepoint Foundation 2010 as a migrated site from a previous SBS installation.
The site was imported as http://servername and the IIS site had a host header with companyweb so that users could browse to it, and all references to the site were as http://companyweb
All my attempts to open the PDFs were using the http://companyweb URL.
I was researching the issue and had gone through everything, but one thing got me thinking when some sites suggested that I look at the permissive or strict browser file open settings. I looked at the web application and it was set to http://servername in
the Central Administration site. I thought hmm let's try opening the Adobe PDF docs with that URL instead, and it worked!
So I changed the web application URL to http://companyweb and tried again and hey presto it's now working.
I really hope this helps someone, it took me a good couple of hours of my day researching to find the solution here.
Some extra info: we are using Adobe Reader 11.0.6 with IE11. Testing with Firefox worked, but that opens the document by downloading it locally and then using Adobe Reader. fix The above actually resolves the problem, it's nothing to do with permissive or strict
file open settings, I set the SP site back to strict and PDFs still open fine.

  • "Save as PDF" from Pages document made it smaller

I have a following problem: I created a simple CD Cover in Pages 09. Then I printed it on my HP 3055 printer and the dimensions were exact and it fit the CD case perfectly.
I need to send this CD cover to a friend, so I created a PDF file via Print -> Save as PDF. Then I verified the printing - to my sheer surprise the cover came out of the printer almost 5mm smaller than it originally was.
I don't want to change (apparantly correct!) size of the CD cover in the original Pages document. I just want a correct PDF out of it. I verified the dimensions of my original Pages document - and it fits A4 paper size on which I'm printing.
I'm confused. Did I miss something?

Thanks for your help. Yes, the cover fits rulers. I searched for "Automatic Page Scaling" which I do remember existing in Print dialogs from some applications - however from Pages I found only this in the Print dialogue, which vaguely ressembles to it:

As you see it is greyed out... Thoughts?

  • Why when I open my password protected Pages document it doesn't require me to enter the password that I have set to see the document?

When I open my Pages app and try to open my previously password protected document it doesn't require me to enter the password to see the document. It just takes me straight to the document like any other document that isn't password protected. Isn't this the point of having a document password protected so no one can see it without knowing the password? Am I missing something when I set the password in the first place? Thanks.

When you set a password in Pages v5(.2), you are offered a check box to remember the saved password in your keychain. If you do not enable this check box, you will always be prompted locally for the document password. If checked, before opening the document, Pages queries keychain if it knows anything about the current local document security, and once confirmed, it simply opens the document without a challenge.
To disable the keychain knowledge for the local document, you open the document, and choose File > Change Password… . Enter the current (old) password only, then select the Remove Password button. Now, you can use File > Set Password… again to set the password, and omit the Remember this password in my keychain option. The desired document password prompt will occur on your local (and remote) access.

  • How to open iCloud PDFs in Pages?

I've just starting using the iCloud Documents feature of Pages and Numbers. So far, very happy with the results. But I've also saved some PDF documents to iCloud and can't seem to open them on my iPhone and iPad. iOS Pages doesn't show them in the document list. On the Mac I can use the iCloud dialog box on Preview. But what App opens them on iOS?
(I had posted a similar question on the iCloud forum but didn't get a reply. Would appreciate any help!)

    What about using iBooks?

  • Help  I cannot open any of my pages documents!

Please help.  I have used pages so that I would have my documents sync to all my devices.  Now I can't open my documents.
I need access to my documents.  What can I do?
Can I uninstall the new pages update?

Now where do we start guessing?
    What version of Pages?
    On which devices?
    Running which OSes?
    What messages are you getting?
    On what device?
