Opening a Photoshop smart object file in Illustrator looks horrible (antialiasing problem)

Hello all,
This problem is killing me and I really wish I had done this logo in Illustrator, but I didn't now I have to suffer. Help!
I am doing a freeland job for a friend so I am not all that and a bag of chips with Illustrator. I am better at Photoshop but I need the vector, so I did my logo in photoshop and created a smart object out of it. I saved a version as a tiff and one as a jpg. My friend is creating his own leaflet in Word and the logo works beautifully there. I am creating a flyer for him in Illustrator and the logo is aliased in Photoshop but when I put it in Illustrator it looks antialiased and bad. He also has a little cheapy yahoo sitebuilder website until I create a website for him and the same logo(jpg) will not open in the yahoo site for him. I work and go to school so I don't have the time to recreated the logo in illustrator. It looks really good the way it is until I put it in Illustrator. Any ideas? please?
Thanks to anyone that answers this question, and kudos for taking time out of your busy day to calm my angst( or add to it)please don't add to it...

Hello Noel and c,
I created the logo in photoshop
( to make vector in photoshop, I need the scalability, I made the logo a smart object)
I then saved a copy as a jpg(for web) and a tif for print. I am creating a flyer in Illustrator, so I have to bring the logo into illustrator, when I do it looks like an aliasing problem. I had that aliasing problem in photoshop, but I still had text.... so I could antialias the text. In Illustrator the logo is just a tif, or jpg(I have tried both) It is not a text, but an image and it looks antialiased. In some programs the logo looks good, in some programs the logo looks bad.  The only layer I have in the good photoshop file that I saved  as a jpg, and as a tif is one layer that has text and the logo on it- this is a smart object. I have additional work files that have multiple layers, but I do not want multiple layers on my final print, web file. When I open up my laptop, I will save a screenshot.
Thanks so much

  • How do i open my multiple smart objects in my psd in one illustrator vector file?

    HELLO
    I have created a psd.
It contains multiple smart objects which when double clicked link you to illustrator.
I would like to open all the vector images from this file in one illustrator file.
    Is this possible?

I guess it might be (almost) possible with Scripting in principle but probably not practically.
    To elaborate:
One could open all the Smart Objects with a Script and with BridgeTalk it should be possible to have Illustrator perform tasks on those.
But one can not, as far as I know, directly access scale, rotation, skew of a placed Smart Object with a Script, so that information would have to be determined with work-arounds or (partially) neglected.
If you need vector output why did you make the arrangement in Photoshop?

  • Smart Objects - File size issues

    Hey All,
The Question: Not sure if this question has been answered elsewhere. But when using a nested smart object (meaning a smart object within a smart object) Photoshop CS5 doesn't display the correct file size (at bottom left) or seem to account for the nested smart object file size.  Is there a "setting" I’m missing to accurately display what the true file size is?
The Problem: Using multiple nested smart objects that I have reduced the size of my image to be 260x200 for web export. Photoshop CS5 won't let me save a file that appears to be only 3mbs claiming it's over 2 gig's. See image below.
Really not sure what to do about this, the company I work for makes lots of changes so using smart objects is necessary for my work flow. But also seems to be slowing me down trying to figure out issues like this and is problematic when it comes to saving all the work I have been doing.
    Thanks for the help

One thing you might have missed is that Photoshop is not a file editor its a document editor.   The sizes Photoshop is displaying are related to how much ram it using for the documents data. How efficient ram is being used etc. File sizes vary all over the place sizes depend on the number of pixels in an image format support layers no layers compression?, transparency.   There is no way Photoshop could even guess at any file sizes.
An other is all smart object layer are not created the same and their sizes my be far different the you may think.
Smart object layers have a basic format. There is an embedded object, there is a composite pixel rendering for embedded object that is used for the layer pixels and there is a transform associated for the layer rendered pixels.
Anything Photoshop supports can be an embedded object.  These objects are copies of the original object.  For example a copy of a RAW file where ACR settings are stored in the file copy metadata. An embedded object might be a copy of a PSD file that has thousands of layers. in any case Photoshop renders pixels for the embedded objects composite view and uses these rendered pixels as the smart object layers pixels.  These pixels can not be changed within the document.
However the embed object can be opened and worked on and changed. If the change is committed Photoshop will update the embedded object and render the updated object composit view and replace the layers pixels.
Smart Object Layer Pixels can only be acted on in the document not changed with paint etc. For example the Transform associated with the smart object layer sizes and positions the layer rendering over the canvas. The layer actual size may be larger then, smaller then the canvas size and have a different aspect ratio then the canvas. Example if you place in an image that is larger then the document canvas size one of Adobe Photoshop's Preferences is set by default have Place resize large images to fit within current the documents canvas size. The transform associated with that placed layer would cause the rendering of the layers pixels to fit with in the canvas.
Though an embedded  object may contain thousands of layers the actual object may be much smaller then you think for PSD files are compressed object may be compressed.  Also while the embedded object  may contain vector layers when a smart object layer is transformed the layer is transformed using interpolation like a raster layer for all that is being transformed is the pixels Photoshop rendered for the embedded smart object. The only way to work on the embedded smart object layers it to open the smart object and work on the object itself.j

  • Cropping smart object files in PS with ACR

I sent a DNG from LR to PS with the "open as smart object in Photoshop" command and after I cropped it in ACR ... the result is in the following image:
It is not cropping canvas ...
So does this mean that we can not use ACR in PS for cropping smart object files?
    Any idea?
    Thanks ...

I see a display like you show.
For when the it was first opened as a smart object layer it was not cropped. ACR set the new Document canvas size to the image's pixel size  for there was no open document and the transform associated the smart object anchor point is the canvas center and the width an height sizes are both 100%.
If I then double click on the smart icon in the layers palette. ACR open the full RAW image.  If I then use ACR crop tool and say crop a portion or the upper left section of the image. When I click OK.  Photoshop updates the smart object layer object. The rendered pixels are the upper left section. The associated transform is not changed it still has the canvas centered anchor point and a width and height of 100%.  So the layers pixel are moved to the center and the width and height are  still 100%.  The number of pixels in the object is much smaller then canvas size so there are transparent areas on all four sides and the borders on opersid sizes are equal to each other.
If I double click on the smart Icon in the layer palette ACR open and all I see is the cropped area. When I click on ACR crop tool I see the whole image and the crop selection is the upper left section I selected the previous time I reprocessed the smart object layer

  • How to open your Photoshop Touch project file in Photoshop

How to open your Photoshop Touch project file in Photoshop
When your files are stored in the Creative Cloud, you can access them on your mobile device using Adobe Photoshop Touch, or on your desktop computer using Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop Touch can open files in the following formats: PSD*, PSDX, PNG, JPG, and GIF. And, with a free plug-in for Photoshop CS5, CS5.1, and CS6 you can open the PSDX files created by Photoshop Touch in Photoshop.
[Note: PSD files can only be opened via the Adobe Creative Cloud. The file is converted,  layers are flattened to a single layer, and  other info that is only supported in Photoshop is removed.]
Download the plug-in (if you have CS6, skip this section)
    1. If you have CS5 and CS5.1, you are required to download a plug-in to be able to open your PSDX files in Photoshop. If you have CS6, you are not required to download the plug-in (it is native within the version). In a browser on your desktop computer, navigate to the Creative Cloud Homepage ( https://creative.adobe.com ). Sign-in to Creative Cloud using your Adobe ID, then navigate to the Creative Cloud Apps & Services page (https://creative.adobe.com/apps).
    2. Click download under “Touch App Plug-ins” to start the download and install process. Included with the installer is a plug-in for Illustrator CS6, which enables opening of Ideas files (.idea) in Illustrator, and a plug-in for Photoshop CS5 and 5.1, which enables opening of Photoshop Touch files (.psdx) in Photoshop.
    3. You will be asked (if you haven't already) to install the Adobe Application Manager. Follow the steps to install the manager, and the Touch App Plugin should begin the download and installation process. If it does not, click install next to the “Touch App Plugins” icon in the Adobe Application Manager to start the process.
    4. You're all set to start opening your PS Touch files in Photoshop CS6.
To save a Photoshop Touch file for upload to the cloud.
    1. Launch Photoshop Touch and ensure that you are in the organizer view. (Tap Done in the upper-left corner of the screen to move from edit view to the organizer view.)
    2. Tap to display the share menu.
    3. Select the file(s) to upload
    4. Select the file format to upload to the cloud. Then tap OK.
    5. Once you save the file format, you have a choice to e-mail the file as a attachment, or save a copy. By pressing cancel, it still can be uploaded to the cloud.
Uploading PS Touch files to the cloud.
    1. Tap the settings button in the top right corner.  Then tap My Account.
    2. Tap Sign in. Sign in with your Adobe ID. To obtain an Adobe ID, go to : https://www.adobe.com/account/sign-in.adobedotcom.html. Once you are signed in, the total storage available in your Creative Cloud is displayed.
Sync your Photoshop Touch files to the Creative Cloud.
    1. Tap the Creative Cloud icon. Make sure the Sync files toggle is switched to the on position.
    2. When Creative Cloud sync is turned on, you can see your files being synced to your Creative Cloud account.
Open a Photoshop Touch file in Photoshop
    1. On your desktop computer, launch a browser and navigate to the Creative Cloud website. When you are signed in, navigate to your Photoshop Touch file. Click to select the file.
    2. Tap the download button in the top right corner.
    3. When the download dialog button pops up, select PSD. Once the file has been downloaded, you can open in Photoshop (CS5, CS5.1, CS6) on your desktop.
    4. When the file is opened in Photoshop, it displays its layers (Note: that if the file is dragged and dropped, and NOT downloaded, it will not display the layers).

Lightroom 5.3 should be able to open D600 RAW photos.
The problem is most likely that you used some version of Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer. This interferes with Lightroom's ability to read the files. If the files are still on your camera card, use Lightroom to directly access them from the camera card. If they are not on your camera card, you can still fix the files, see http://forums.adobe.com/message/6181267#6181267

  • Video tutorial - Photoshop Smart Objects in poster design

    Hello Photoshop users!
I had a bit of time spare last night and thought i'd make a quick video overview for a recent poster design I did.
I created a quick 60's themed poster design for a battle of the bands event. The video is mainly about my workflow creating the warped and wavy text using Photoshop smart objects and Illustrator Vector smart objects.
It was a very time-saving technique, so wanted to share in-case anyone might not have been using smart objects much yet.
    Check it out here:

    Hope someone finds it useful!
    Cheers!
PS: Here is a still image of the final poster Design:

Thanks for checking it out and for your comment! Had fun putting it together, next time I'll keep an eye on the length - this one went on for too long!

  • Lost Temporary Vector Smart Object file

My computer just rebooted unexpectedly. I had just sent a file to the printer when the computer shut down and restarted. I was doing extensive edits to a Photoshop smart object, so even though I'd been saving, the saves were in a "temporary" file and the linked PS files had not been updated or saved. So I lost over an hour of work. What a lesson. Perhaps something like Time Machine would have retained those temp files, I don't know. Another first, in my computer art career.
Does anyone have suggestions on backing up temporary smart objects while editing? I know I could do a save as, but then the link to PS is lost. I could simply replace the smart object with the saved AI file, but that really reduces the convenience of linked smart objects.

I need to open and use a DFX file in Illustrator CS6 but it is only displaying digits and letters as opposed to fashion patterns. I believe the original file was  created in Gerber

    Thank you.
I will see if I can access/download a CS2 version. Thats a kind offer, I will see how I go with the download first, as I will be needing to open several files over the next few weeks.

  • Flv player is opening vector smart objects instead of illustrator.

How do I re-associate vector smart objects in Photoshop to open in Illustrator as they did before the update?

Editing smart objectrs uses the system wide associations, not the ones from Bridge, so you need to adjust that for the *.ai file type.

  • File opening as Placed smart object layer, instead of separate file

how to open an image in photoshop cc like photoshop cs3?
in cc it is automatically open as smart object on the other photo which is already open..i want to open 2nd image as a different window

I don't believe there's an option to change whether dropping an image on another image places it as a new layer, no.  I think you'll need to get used to doing things a little differently than you have been.  I'm sorry to have to bear that news, but it only takes a week or two to build new habits.
This behavior isn't too new, by the way.  I think the "drag to workspace to place file on top of open document" behavior changed back in Photoshop CS5, if memory serves.

  • Photoshop smart object layer will not open in ACR when I double click

I have a raw file opened up in photoshop, duplicated it, made them smart objects, when I click the smart object icon on the file, i get another copy of the file in photoshop, the file doesn't open up in acr, is there a setting i'm missing?
    Message was edited by: Rodwf

If you dupe that smart object layer you still have one smart object change one the other also changes.  If you want two smart object for the save image so you cab have two versions of raw conversions you need to use menu Layers>smart Object>New smart object via copy..

  • Can We Paste Photoshop Smart Objects Into Illustrator (as Linked/Embedded)?

Since raster editing is much more limited in Illustrator, is there a way to link or embed an individual Smart Object from Photoshop into Illustrator? I know there is an option to Place a file into Illustrator. But what if I have a larger Photoshop document with many Smart Objects in it, and just want to copy and paste one of those into Illustrator, but also have it update when I update it in Photoshop. Is this possible?

Copy and Paste won't have a link to the original file. Only Place can have that.

  • Smart Object import from Illustrator to Photoshop ( CS5 )

    Hello !
    Here's the thing:
I have an icon in Illustrator and I'm designing a website in Photoshop so I copy and paste that icon as a Smart Object in Photoshop and everything is perfect but when I resize that Smart Object is not perfect anymore.
    *The document is 200 %
-The first icon is the original file I import from Illustrator and It's 100%
-I resize the second icon to 70%
Now look at those gray light lines around the second icon. Why is that happening ? How can I fix it ?
    Thanks !
PS: Sorry for my English I just speak a little bit.

    Hi, again, Sunniess.
Now look at those gray light lines around the second icon. Why is that happening ? How can I fix it ?
You may be sorry you asked. I didn't have time to bore you with the answer to that earlier.
The gray lines are being generated in Ps, so this should be of interest to anyone who works with small images in Ps.
When you export from Illy using the clipboard, Illy rounds to the nearest whole pixel. A rounded rectangle is created in Illy  measuring 73x30 pixels.   If you scale the rectangle 70% in Illy, the new rectangle measures 51.1 x 21 pixels. But it pastes into Ps as 51x21 pixels.
If you import the 73x30 pixel image into Ps and scale 70% , instead of 51x21 pixels, you will get either 52x21, 53x21, 52x23 or 53x23 pixels, depending on where the Reference point locator (highlighted below) is set in the Transform Toolbar. The gray lines are the extra pixels.
Why the extra pixels? The extra pixels are a form of dithering. When you scale the  73x30 imported image 70% in Ps,  you get 51.1 x 21 pixels, same as in Illy. But Ps doesn't round to the nearest pixel. It creates fractional pixels. In the screenshot below,  the rectangle is rendered 52x21. The lines at top and bottom are sharp because the pixel height is a whole integer, 21. But the width is 51.1. There's a decimal fraction. The gray vertical bar at right is how Ps represents fractional pixels. The .1 of 51.1. Ps can't actually make .1 of a  pixel black. So instead it makes 1 pixel .1 black by assigning 10% opacity.
If the Reference point locater is set as below, you get a different result. Now the rectangle renders at 53x23 pixels. You now have gray rows of pixels at top and bottom, as well as both sides. The height is still really 21 pixels, but since it is transforming from the center and it's an odd number, Ps splits a pixel, assigning .5 black pixels at the top, and .5 black pixels at the bottom, which it represents with 2 rows of pixels at 50% opacity. Similar thing with the ends, except they are lower opacity because they represent smaller fractions of a pixel. This pretty much reproduces what your icon looks like.
Below is a closeup of the above rectangle over a blue background. The  rows of pixels aren't actually gray. They are semi transparent black.
The point is, how the Reference point locator is set can have unexpected influence on the results, particularly when downsizing small images. And will be most noticable on straight vertical or horizontal edges.
As if that weren't enough, there are options in your General Preferences that affect the results of resizing images.
I copied and pasted your icon into Ps, then scaled it 70% at two different settings.
The top is Bicubic, the botttom is Nearest Neighbor.
A significant difference. And this interacts with the Transform Locator setting to further confuse the issue. But if you resize in Illy you avoid all this.
If you resize in Ps, it's good to be aware of this stuff. This all happens in Ps. It really has nothing to do with Illy. If you must scale in Ps and get noticable rows of fractional pixels, it's easy enough to select the rows and just delete them. Or fill them. That's essentially what Illy does when it copies to the clipboard.
Your English is fine. I hope mine makes as much sense.
    Peace,
    Lee

  • Smart Object Not Launching Illustrator

    Hi Guys,
I am trying to get a smart object to open in Illustrator from Photoshop.
This is the process I've taken:
Open illustrator > New File > Create Vector Shape > Copy
Open Photoshop > New File > Paste Copied Vector Shape as Smart Object > Locate Smart Object on Photoshop Layer > Double Click
The double click usually opens that smart object in Illustrator(the place it was created) but instead it's opening a 'Import PDF' window instead.
Any ideas on how to fix this? The process works fine on my MAC but on my PC it shows the Import PDF window.
    Thanks,
    Warren

    Hello, thanks for the reply.
The Mac Version of Illustrator hasn't been updated since the new update however the PC version is up to date with all the most recent features. I tried to remove any preferences etc and even did a fresh install of both PS and Illustrator but it's made no difference. I'm still getting the same issue.
    Best,
    Warren

  • Open raw as smart object using droplet

    Hello everyone,
This is my first post so please be gentle
Rather than a droplet opening a raw file in a regular layer, is it possible to open the raw file as a smart object so that the object can be edited in Camera Raw later on?
Thanks for your time and festive wishes

Click on the Worksflow Options link at the bottom of the ACR window and then deselect Open in Photoshop as Smart Objects. Click OK then Click Done.
