Opening an Illustrator CS5 document in CS4

I currently have Illustrator CS4. I am taking an online class and the lessons that were created for us were created in CS5. When I go to open the lessons in CS4, I get a message saying that the file was generated by a newer version of Illustrator and some data loss might occur if I import this file. When I click 'ok' an "open PDF" dialog box. (See image). The file that I am trying to open is NOT a PDF file, but is a '.ai' file. The files that I am trying to open also contain more than 1 artboard. The "open PDF" dialog box is making me choose which artboard I want to open but is not letting me open the 1 file containing the multiple artboards--therefore, I am never able to see all of the different artboards all at once. Can anyone help me figure out what is going on here?  Thank you
Sheryl

Illustrator files can also be PDF files. When you save an Illustrator file you have an option to include a PDF file embedded in the Illustrator file; by default this is on. This PDF component is the data used when you rasterize the Illustrator file in Photoshop or place it in InDesign. When your version of Illustrator found it could not read the Illustrator component of the file because of version incompatibility it decided to open the part it could read: the PDF. Unfortunately, while a PDF can contain the full appearance of the Illustrator file, it cannot contain the full editibility of the file, as you have discovered.
You can download a 30 day demo of Illustrator. The demo is fully functional an not in any way crippled, apart from the 30 day expiry. So install it, open the lesson files, and convert them to CS4.

  • Illustrator CS5 document opening with pdf prompt in CS4

When opening a Illustrator CS5 document in CS4 I am getting the following dialog box. The CS5 document consists of 9 artboards in this example, and when loaded in CS4, only allows you to choose one at a time as in the image, and only shows one in the opened document for editing. What have I done wrong when I saved it? I didn't save it as a CS4 document. I want it to open as normal so that all the artboards in view, and are editable.
    Thanks for any help.

I want it to open as normal so that all the artboards in view, and are editable.
That's an oximoron as in mutually exclusive. Artboards work differently between CS5 and CS4 and as Scott already mentioned, unless you save down to the old version, there is no way to retain all data editably.

  • Do illustrator cs6 document open in illustrator cs5?

do illustrator cs6 document open in illustrator cs5?

Yes, they do, but of course certain features will get converted/ expanded/ flattened and may not be editable. To increase compatibility, save it as a CS5 file from CS6.

  • I can't open CS5 documents in CS4

I can't open CS5 documents in CS4. I know I need to update my plugins, but when I go to updates it says there are none. I have a hardcopy of CS4, is there a way to download CS4 electronically so I can receive all the updates I need? I have no idea how to do this manually . . . or maybe I just need to upgrade to CS5?

Or else you need to update CS4 to the 6.0.6 patch...

  • .pdf file not opening in Illustrator CS5

All of a sudden, I cannot get ,pdf files to open in Illustrator CS5. what would cause this?
    Thanks

    Jeremy,
Or you may go further down the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • SVG connector lines missing when opened in Illustrator CS5

It has taken a while to jiggle SVG files saved in Inkscape and get them to open in Illustrator CS5. The files are basically a flow chart with some text and connecting lines between the rectangular boxes.
Now we are getting  text and rectangular boxes to show when the SVG file is opened in Illustrator.  However, the paths (or connector lines) that show the flow between boxes are not shown.
The file we are opening has about 10 layers and initially, it looked like just a blank document.  We had to click the top layer in the layer group "on", to see all the layers.  I guess the default is having the top layer "off".
When opened in a browser, the  connector lines are showing up fine (although the arrow heads are turned sideways).
Suggestions for getting connector lines to show up in Illustrator?
    Thanks!

I suppose Inkscapes equivalent of AI's Expand function would be advisable. I'd have to revisit inkscape one of these days, but I believe they are using styles to descripe the conenctors, not genuine objects, hence nothing shows up in programs that don't understand the Inkscape lingo...

I recently loaded OSX mavericks on my Imac. I now find I cannot open any Adobe products from CS5. The error message reads " to open Adobe illustrator CS5.app, you need to install a JAva SE 6 runtime. Would you like to check and install one? I try to install but get the error" download error". As far as i know I'm using Adobe Java 7. None of my CS5 suite works anymore............and i really dont want to upgrade to a monthly cloud service fee as i hate this policy with a passion.

This goes for Dreamweaver CC on Mavericks!!!!! THANK YOU!
I couldn't launch Dreamweaver CC. An error told me to install "java se 6 runtime". But when I clicked  OK I got another error telling me there is a network problem! I found this forum post on CS6 products, so I tried the download link, installed java 6 and presto, it worked! Thanks!

  • I get the message, To open "Adobe Illustrator CS5.1.app" you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime. What to do?

I get the message, "To open 'Adobe Illustrator CS5.1.app' you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime. What to do?

Sorry, I didn't say it damages Java.
Yes, I know. You were quoting from a post on Adobe's site.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it wasn't since Mountain Lion.
Yes, I think that's correct. Apple stopped installing Java as part of the OS after Lion. If you check the installers for Mountain Lion through Yosemite, there are a lot of root Java processes OS X still installs, or Java wouldn't work at all. It's just the actual runtime environment no longer installs. The user has to do that.
that the application files are damaged. They are not talking about JAVA itself.
What application files? Do you mean the Adobe apps themselves? If so, yes, it's been reported that the CS5 and CS6 apps in particular usually need to be reinstalled after upgrading OS X to Yosemite. That's actually an old problem that isn't a Yosemite only issue.

  • I just updated my Mac to the new op system and when I tried to open my Ai it gave me this message, "To open "Adove Illustrator CS5.1 you need to install the legacy java SE 6 runtime."

I just updated my Mac to the new op system and when I tried to open my Ai it gave me this message, "To open "Adove Illustrator CS5.1 you need to install the legacy java SE 6 runtime." I updated my Java to 8 and it still won't open. I tried to update my Ai to 11...it won't update.

    Steven,
The right way/order is to update the OP, then reinstall the applications.

  • Problems with opening Indesign CS5 document in CS4

I have the CS4  Design Premium  Academic package and am working with another graphic designer who uses CS5 - Indesign. When  trying to open her InDesign CS5 file that she exported to the CS4 format I received the following message - " cannot open brochure.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade  to the latest version of Adobe InDesign. I called Adobe and they suggested to export the CS4 file to the idml format. We did that and when I opened the file many formatting features- such as no margins or grids appeared. Any suggestions - I don't want to upgrade to CS5 if I don't need to. Also, any suggestionsthe cheapest place to upgrade if I need to?

She didn't export it for CS4. If she had it wouldn't be an INDD file. She needs to export to IDML and you need to realize that this document may not look like it does in CS5.
You do need to upgrade if you want to work successfully with this other designer. Worth noting, in case you don't, is that you cannot upgrade individual components of the suite. Personally, I recommend Design Premium as the best bang for the buck.
    Here's why: http://www.theindesignguy.com/purchase-advice.shtml
You find a link a Amazon on that page, which as far as I can tell is the best place to buy with free shipping and for the most part no sales tax.

  • Can't open the illustration CS5

This solution worked on my Windows PC.
The problem:  Illustrator CS4 or CS5 wouldn't open EPS files in a particular folder.  Would get the error message -- Can't Open the Illustration. Or, the application would shut down or just wouldn't open when trying to open one of the offending document.  After thinking I had to recover each of over a hundred files, I realized that the problem might be a font.
The solution (for my equipment, anyway):  Open a new document.  Type a few characters and assign the text the font that you used in the offending document that you think might be the problem.  Try opening the offending document. After doing this once, it allowed me to open every file with that font perfectly.  Somehow, it's like Illustrator lost connection to that font, in this case Cooper Medium BT.
Anyway ... just thought I'd share this.
Would someone else having the problem and this solution, please confirm that it worked for you?

    diacritically,
You have to follow the instructions very closely.
However, reports in this forum seem to indicate that this is a way that only works in a limited number of cases because it is rather difficult to spot (all) the errors in the file.
    There are some instructions here:
    http://daxxter.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/how-to-recover-a-corrupted-illustrator-ai-file/
The simplest solution you may try first is to try to place the file into a new AI document and see whether enough (or anything) can be saved that way; remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layers palette before that and untick afterwards.
You may also try the trial to see whether is is possible, and feasible, to pay for the recovery here:
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
That trial may also show whether there is hope in trying to recover.

  • Can't export an EPS file from Photoshop CS5 and open in Illustrator CS5.

    I'm on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
I am making DVD covers for print. The barcodes for the DVD covers have to be done in Illustrator. But the original designs are done in photoshop including the text. For years this hasn't been a problem. Right before adding the barcodes I create an EPS file from photoshop, open that file in Illustrator and all my text is automatically coverted to perfect crisp clean vectors, viola! I add the barcodes and export the PDF for the printers.
But now I can't open my EPS files in Illustrator CS5 even though I'm exporting them the same way I always have from Photoshop CS5. Illustrator says... "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error." --> Note it does not give an error number after this warning like I see it does for so many other people.
I have been trying to fix this for over 10 HOURS spanning 2 days! I'm infuriated I can't get help from Adobe on this and have read all the forums and don't see my problem listed anywhere.
    I've tried:
    - Deleting the .plist file and the Settings folder & resetting my permissions
    - Uninstalling and Reinstalling Illustrator
    - Turning off all other applications
    - Creating more disk space on my hard drive (even though I have 200gb available)
    - Restarting the computer
    - Disabling my Font book and still I can't open the EPS file
I thought maybe it's possible it's the font I'm using Fontesque OT so I even tried converting text to objects prior to exporting the EPS file from photoshop to illustrator and turning off my font book, but still it won't open. And if I open the PSD directly in Illustrator, text comes out a bit fuzzy in the PDF I export.
If anyone can provide any solutions I would be so grateful! I'm at my wits end here, this should have taken under an hour to do and now it's ruining my entire weekend. I'm completely panicked because I was suppose to have these to my client over the weekend so they could turn them in for Print frist thing on Monday morning and of course Adobe provides no chat support or phone support after 7pm on weekday or on the weekend which is when this all started.

I never even thought of reinstalling photoshop, but I think this was a font issue. I'd never saved an EPS with Fontesque OT Regular enabled, only Fontesque OT Bold. Somehow I think the font was causing the problem because ridding the font from the equation allowed me to open the EPS file.
After 12 HOURS of trying different things I found a WORK AROUND...
    I had to:
    - Select the Text in Photoshop (with Fontesque OT enabled)  --> Select Create Work Path --> Covert to Shape on each of the text items
    - Save EPS file out of Photoshop
    - Disable Fontesque OT font in Font Book
    - Then open EPS in Illustrator add in my Barcodes and export the PDF
(the barcodes have to be added in Illustrator because they need to be pure 100% black with no CMYK color in them. You can't save them out of Photoshop that way, only Illustrator, otherwise I would have made my pdf straight out of photoshop like any other normal human
This work around is the only way I could get the EPS files to open in Illustrator and still have the text remain super crisp like a vector.
NOTE to others in the future about crisp text from Photoshop to Illustrator:
    - Simply "converting to shape" did not preserve the vector. You have to Select Create Work Path --> then Covert to Shape on each of the text items (with the font enabled) for this to work and preserve the crispness of the text. Even creating "smart object" did not truly preserve my vectors or the text crispness in the EPS file once I imported it into Illustrator.
DrStrik9 thank you SO MUCH for trying to help me. You did give me ideas that helped me figure out the workaround and also helped me feel not so alone as I struggled through this. I'm going to follow up with your other suggestions about reinstalling photoshop and also checking my RAM, etc. But I just want to that you so so so SOOOO much for all your time and consideration in this matter. I hope you have a wonderful amazing week ahead and that someone does something very nice and thoughtful for you too

  • How to open an InDesign CS5 file in CS4 - error message.

I worked on a file in Mac's OS Adobe CS5 InDesign
at school; emailed it to my home address; tried to open it in Windows
XP Adobe CS4 (I've done the same thing with other InDesign
files recently without problems) and received the following error message:
"Cannot open "file name".  Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign."  To the left is a list of 18 (!) plug-ins.
Of course when I click "OK"  I'm sent back to a blank .indd screen.
    Solutions?  Suggestions?  More info needed?
Any and all assistance will be appreciated.

    Thank you, Scott;
I'll give this a try when I return to class on Thursday.  I am puzzled that other InD CS5 files have opened in CS4 after a message that "some data may be lost" - which I have clicked "OK", edited the file and emailed it back to school to open in CS5.  Oh, well, if this works I'll use it on all the CS5 files that I create in class.
    I appreciate your email.

  • Opening Adobe illustrator CS5 file in CorelDraw X5

I was totally new to graphic design and the best I could do was resize images in MS Paint or use Word 2010. Than I discovered Adobe Illustartor as I needed to make a logo and Letter Head. After breaking my head against my monitor (does not hurt any more) and learning it for 2 weeks, I became sufficiently good enough (if I can be excused to say that) and designed the logo and letterhead. Now it has to go to print.
The problem is that all the commercial printers and the people who use them, HERE use CorelDRAW and not only that but also older versions from 9 to 15. They refuse to take Adobe Illustrator files or even CorelDRAW files above version 12 such as v15 or X5. They refuse to work with PDF files also. No Word 2010 files either. Simply and Only CorelDRAW files of version 9 to 12.
The Adobe Illustrator CS5 does not have options of saving the files in ".cdr" format. And when I import or open the ".ai" file in CorelDRAW X5, many things happen. Color changes of text as well as objects. Some objects do not get displayed. Alignment and positioning gets changed, and many others.
I have taken some steps after reading on the net to make it easier for CorelDRAW X5 to import the ".ai" files. And also tried many things. These include, but are not limited to..
Uncheck/disable the "compression" when saving the file in AI-CS5.
Uncheck/disable the "Embed ICC Prile" when saving in AI-CS5.
    Convert all text to outlines.
Saving in "SVG", "PDF" all different versions.
Saving in older AI-CS5 Legacy versions.
Exporting the file from AI-CS5 in different file formats.
    Importing the file from CD-X5.
    Working in RGB Color Mode.
      ... And many more.
Please note that I can not be expected to fresh learn CD-X5 and abandon AI-CS5 and design from the begining, if that is a "sole" answer. Also my design is simple enough. Attached are 2 pics. One of the logo and the other of the letterhead. Just 3 rounded rectangles filled with 2 color gradients and vectors of animals with styles applied to those animals and with text at the bottom.
    The Logohttp://oi44.tinypic.com/ieqs0m.jpg
    The LetterHeadhttp://oi41.tinypic.com/1zzj03s.jpg
Please further note (yes! I know, you have heard that many times) that although I was successful in designing (the asthetic beauty of the design is another matter), I am still new to designing. So Color Theroy or Font theroy have not made past me. And I wonder what's the point of having a standard of "SVG" If these so called "Vector Editing Applications" can not handle the files uniformly?
I guess my question is how to either
    Export/Save/Save As/Place the file from AI-CS5 to CD-X5
    Import/Open/Open As/Place the file in CS-X5 from AI-CS5
Without changes being made to it. My objective to to hand over a print ready file to the printing guys.
    Thanks in Advance.

  • PDF form data not visible when opened in Illustrator CS5

I've been searching the forums but have been unable to find an answer to my specific problem.
I've created a form using Adobe Acrobat Pro. The PDF form fields are then populated with data via Netsuite. When I open the PDF (with data) in Acrobat all of the information shows up, however when I open the PDF in Illustrator CS5 the field data is not visible. Is there a way to force the data to be visible when opened in Illustrator?
Thanks in advance for any help!

You could try first flattenening the fields. This converts the field appearances to regular page contents. You can do this with JavaScript, PDF Optimizer, or a Preflight fixup.
