Opening an iMovie 08 in iMovie 06

Is it possible to open a movie imported in iMovie 08 in Imovie 06? Does not seem to work. I have 10 hours of movies I would like to edit in 06 since I re loaded it, and I really do not want to re import them again!

I normally try to do everything with iMovie 06 (especially if I'm going to burn a DVD). I think it's fairly common to use iMovie 08 has an import engine only but then do your editing with iMovie 06 (when importing DV I use IM06).
iMovie 08 has two areas: events and projects. Events are just collections of clips. If you import DV video into iMovie 08, they end up as DV clips, at original quality in events. You can import these clips into iMovie 06 projects without quality loss by just starting a new project and importing the clip files from the iMovie 08 Events folder. This however makes a complete copy of the clip inside the iMovie '06 project file.
In the Finder, open the "Events" folder associated with your captured/imported files, Copy/Move them to another location, discard the "Event" from iMovie '08, close the application, Open iMovie 06 and import/Drag and Drop as you normally would.

  • Is there a way to open and edit my iMovie HD files with iMovie '09 and later versions?

I am getting ready to update an older iMac from Tiger to Mountain Lion. (Long overdue, I know) I have several files that I created using iMovie HD. After I update, will the new versions of iMovie be able to open and edit my iMovie HD files?

I don't think that iMovie 11 is backwards compatible with iMovie HD 6.
If you still have the install disks for iMovie Hd 6 (iLife 6) you can keep it alongside the newer version:
Happily this is easily achieved, but it has to be done backwards.
Delete iMovie 11 (just drag it to the trash). Now install iMovie 6 from the iLife 6 install disks. Update it to iMovie 6.0.3.
Now re-install iMovie 11. This automatically moves iMovie 6 into a folder it creates in your Applications folder called iMovie Previous Version.
    Then reinstall iMovie 11.
iMovie 6 works great with iDVD 7.
Now you have them both, and you can have both in the Dock as well.
Alternatively you could try this method, suggested by poster Uitech:
Open a terminal and type "touch /Library/Preferences/com.apple.iLife011.plist"
    (No quotes)
Install iMovieHD6 from the iLife 6 install disk.
This works with both Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.

  • IMovie for Mac: "iMovie cannot open files in the "iMovie for iOS Project" format."

    Question, asked professionally
When will iMovie for Mac be able to open iMovie for iOS projects?
    Question, asked snarkily
Any reasonable expectation that we will ever be able to edit projects--created in iMovie on our fancy new expensive phones--in iMovie on our fancy new expensive laptops?

    Frustration
Manufacturer: Apple (a multibillion dollar company)
    The year: 2015
    Hours lost: Three Weeks
Total costs for both devices: $4,000
    Background Details
I just wasted thousands of dollars on these two hardware devices by making the rookie mistake of assuming projects were compatible across iMovie applications. However, the exported .iMovieMobile project files are in an incompatible iMovie for iOS Project format that iMovie for Mac cannot import. So I am stuck with a 15 GB .iMovieMobile project file--for an hour-long+ video--that I created and I was editing on my iPhone for weeks that I can no longer edit on my iPhone due to an error, nor potentially rescue the lost hours on my Mac, the sole reason I purchased it one day ago. The reason I can no longer edit the project on the iPhone is because iMovie for iOS suddenly stopped displaying the video of the project in preview, external display, etc. The clip snapshots remain visible and the audio remains audible, but the video appears fully black. Any attempt to export the video at any resolution generates an error message. (This error applies only to this project; other projects export without issue.) I can save to and from iTunes or iCloud without issue, but import into iMovie for Mac is unavailable for this latest version. Deleting and reinstalling the app does not resolve the issue. Nothing has resolved this issue; so I purchased the Mac as a last attempt, and it appears that I will have to begin the meticulously painful process of recreating the video from scratch with all the titling, sound effects, precise edits, transitions, organization, etc. This video was to surprise my mother for her birthday with "this is your life" footage, including my late father. It may seem like a small first-world problem, but such things carry big emotional impacts. What began as such a wonderfully intuitive and joyful experience has descended into a soul-suffering nightmare of catastrophic proportions. This software grinch stole christmas.
    Likely Suspect
I believe this originated from Apple's confusingly designed iTunes client that removed videos used by iMovie for IOS during a sync, which I successfully restored back to the iPhone. This apparently resulted in iOS seeking and then claiming to find all of the videos, but somehow a bug in the coding causes the audio to play but not display video, and no way to resolve the bug from an enduser standpoint. I was hoping that iMovie for Mac would allow me a workaround, but I'll never know because the iOS and Mac formats are currently and dishearteningly incompatible.
    Suggestions
I never performed a full backup of the iPhone, but I don't believe any of the iCloud nor local backups actually backup iMovie projects themselves anyway. (That's a fail.) So one must back them up manually to iTunes or iCloud.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS DAILY, IF NOT HOURLY.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING OR SYNCING FROM ITUNES.
MANUALLY BACKUP YOUR PROJECTS BEFORE IMPORTING VIDEO CREATED OUTSIDE  OF YOUR IOS DEVICE.
    Resolutions
Hope Apple fixes this problem soon? Perhaps.
Return the Mac to Apple, if they allow? Perhaps.
Someone in this community will provide a magical workaround--that I haven't already attempted? Perhaps.
As unlikely these options may be, I shudder to imagine that I may be forced to suffer no resolution and $3,000+ completely down the drain, because if iMovie for IOS worked as intended, I wouldn't have ever purchased the Mac as a last ditch effort to rescue the project. It meant that much to me to surprise my mother by attempting to retrieve this project file from oblivion--but to no avail.

I appreciate you taking the time to copy and paste boilerplate responses to increase your points in this forum, but I've already read all those support articles in depth; but you have barely read my post at all. Please don't guess a fix. Only someone with the latest versions of iMovie, iOS, iPhone, Yosemite, and MacBook Pro is qualified to troubleshoot this, because anyone would immediately see that the following option no longer exists:
Open iMovie on your Mac, and choose File > Import > iMovie for iOS Project.
Read my post before you reply: It clearly says in the title and within my post that I can neither export nor import through iTunes without receiving an error message. So your response neither solved my question nor helped me whatsoever.

  • I go to open FCP X and iMovie opens?

It's the strangest thing.  I can see the FCPx icon but when I open it, I get iMovie - every time.  The widows are locked in place, I have no viewer window, it wants to add all this meta-tagging, there's no cohesive timeline, it always wants to use these events -- what the **** is an?  Is there some sudo command I can use to open up FCP?  Maybe if I put in the FCS3 disc and reinstall...
But in all seriousness... what the ****?  Sure I can use FCP 7 for now -- it works great and I know it like the back of my hand!  But I wanted a 64-bit version of FCP, not iMovie pro. Can we add a "classic mode" button in 10.1?

Hey, I had th same problem.
Here is what I did to fix it.
First, locate Final Cut Pro in the Finder
When it is selected hit return. You should now be able to enter a new name.
Now enter "iMovie" and hit return.
This solved the problem for me.
    Hope this helps,
    Stefan

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

  • Opening old projects in imovie 6

can I open older versions of imovie projects in imovie 6?

    Hi QuestVideo,
There should be no problems doing this. The older projects should just open straight up and update to the new iMovie. If there is a problem apple-click (or right click) on the old iMovie file and choose 'show package contents'. Then remove the Quicktime movie and import it into iMovie6 (for iMovie05 projects). For older projects just open the folder and import the Quicktime movie.
NB. Opening a project in a newer version of iMovie will make them unopenable in older versions. If you want to keep the older version just copy the file first and open the copy in iMovie6.

  • -43 error when import Imovie into Imovie

    Hello,
I want to import an imovie into another Imovie but I get a -43 error : saying impossible to import the file. Quicktime could not analyse it : -43.
I removed plug ins from library/Imovie
What I did : open a Imovie project. Dragged a project from the finder into Imovie. And got the error message.
    thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the forum, Emmanuel.
iMovie HD isn't able to import another iMovie HD project. Trying to import it causes an error.
Remember, the iMovie HD project isn't a single file and it's not a movie. It's a package, a special kind of Mac OS folder containing lots of other files and folders. To look inside the package, Control-click on the project icon and choose Show Package Contents from the popUp menu that appears.
One way to import Project A into Project B is to open Project A in iMovie, select all the clips, Copy, open Project B, and Paste the clips into Project B. Do the same for the audio tracks, if you want those too.
To avoid iMovie importing the same file more than one time, be sure to Copy and Paste all the clips (video or audio) at the same time.
If you want the Timeline of Project A to arrive in Project B as a single clip, import the Timeline Movie.mov that's inside the Cache folder of Project A.

  • HT6012 While trying to update projects and events from a previous version of iMovie to iMovie '11, someone forced iMovie to quit.  Now when I start iMovie '11 and try to update, a message says no projects or events can be found?  Any suggestions?

While trying to update projects and events from a previous version of iMovie to iMovie '11, someone forced iMovie to quit.  Now when I start iMovie '11 and try to update, a message says no projects or events can be found?  I know there are previous projects and events, and they definitely have not been updated because they do not show up in my iMovie'11 library, events, or projects.  Any suggestions?

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

  • Why Are there question marks in my dock that says iphoto, imovie and imovie hd after resetting my dock?

My iBook G4 used to belong to my mums friend. After having it and using it for 2 years, I did a dock reset.  Now There are question marks saying iphoto, imovie and imovie hd.  I don't have the installation disk with me so how do I get these apps back?

Do you know which versions they were? Sometimes they came on an iLife disc; sometimes on an Applications disc or Restore disc with the original software package that came with the iBook when it was new.
Doing a Dock reset would not have removed these applications from the Applications folder.
If they are no longer in the Applications folder, you will have to reinstall them from a disc.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:

  • Can't Open Project After Quitting iMovie 7.1.4

    Hello all...
I was just creating my first iMovie project and had it just about where I wanted it. Then I quit iMovie, and restarted it, and the project was gone. The events were still there though. I didn't mess with any files in the iMovie Events or iMovie Projects folder.
What happened? Any chance of recovering my work?
    Thanks!
    -Eric

I had the same thing happen. Opened iMovie and all my events were there, but there was a blank "My Project" in the project pane. Even if I double-click the project file that I'm trying to see, it doesn't show up. Were you able to resolve it on your system?
    Thanks,

  • Can no longer import or open a rcproject in iMovie 11 (9.0.9) - the file however is still there

    Hello!
I do have an urgent problem. I was working on an imovie-project. Imovie asked to create thumbnails - after that I no longer see this project in iMovie - other projects are still there. The funny thing is, that the file is still in the library (imovie-folder) - but cannot be opened via doubleclick or imported in iMovie either.
I do have two different version of iMovie on my Mac  - the older one (9.0.9) and a newer one (10.0.5) - but I`ve always been working with the older one and the other projects have beeb created in version 9 and can still be loaded - and are in the same folder in the library. (see screenshot)
I`ve been working on this project for several days - I desperatly need held on this!
    Thanks!
    Maike

Just want to say I am having a very similar problem.  I've been working iniMovie for a couple years, and  I have never experience this before.   I do have the latest update iMovie11 9.0.2.  I have about 1400 pictures imported from iPhoto (and really didn't experience major issues importing them), but now I am trying to go in and adjust cropping and transitions, and every slight adjustment takes approx 20 - 30 seconds, so it's taking me FOREVER to edit this project.  Am seriously frustrated!!  Any ideas out there?

  • I can't open any movie in iMovie

I downloaded iMovie '11 on my MacBook Pro and I haven't been able to open any movies in it. I keep changing their format but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

    Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • Why can't I edit/open my project in iMovie?

I was editing a video (that I had already edited down to 8 minute in length) and decided to change the speed of one of my clips. After doing this, the little scrolly thing that moves as you move it across the clips (I don't know what that's called. The mouse, I guess!) didn't show up. So I quit iMovie, opened it back up again, and the project is no longer able to be edited or even opened, unless I change the name of it.
I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix it, and I really don't want to start over on editing the originally 1 hour+ long video. Can someone help?

    Hi Anup,
I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with your ZTE Open C device updates. I experienced this same issue in a ZTE Open C device in the past.
During that time, I opened a bug to track this issue:
    * [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1036758 Bug 1036758]
Unfortunately, ZTE creates device-specific builds, and there is not much that Mozilla can do to resolve this issue directly. You should contact the support channels for ZTE directly, so that they may investigate and suggest possible solutions for this case.
For tracking purposes, can you please specify the version number and Build ID for your device, and where your device was purchased?

  • Open two instances of iMovie 08 at once

as the title asks, can this be done? If so, how?
    Cheers.

I'm not sure there would be much point in being able to open a second production area window. In imovie 6 and prior, the application would be unusable during rending and a second window allowed you to work on another project while this rendering took place.
In im08 rendering is done on the fly and you can switch from project to project at will, so in terms of maintaining continuous production im08 does what im6 does without the need for second windows.
