Opening an imovie file

I'm using final cut, and have been asked to help an african relief organization on a project created in imovie. But when I try to open the .imovieproject files, i can load the clips on the plane, but have no edited files.
I could export the .mov files, using quicktime pro, and load that into finalcut, but i can't separate tracks. When I try to load the .imovieproject files, it crashes final cut.
Am I not seeing the final edited files?
Thanks anyone.

However, when I load the IMovieProjectFile that was given to me, it again loads all the clips (453) of them, but doesn't create a timeline.
First, start with a pristine copy of the project as completed by the monk. If there's nothing on the timeline of the project you see now AND all the clips are in the Clips pane, something major has probably gone wrong. Normally the author would NOT have moved everything from the Timeline to the Clips pane.
That can happen, however, if the iMovie project file was inappropriately emptied at some stage by corruption, or by user error. (Emptying the trash in iMovie 2/3/4 can cause such corruption.)
When there's clips in the Media folder which iMovie doesn't recognize as the project opens -- called strays -- iMovie offers to place them in the Clips pane. When you next save, that's where they stay. If the project file is empty when it opens, all the clips in the Media folder are considered strays.
When you save, iMovie automatically updates the project.mov (the movie with the same name as your project) to reflect the new timeline.
So if all the clips are now in the Clips pane and the project.mov is empty (when played in QT player), most likely a major screw-up has occurred. My guess is you should start over with a pristine copy.
If the pristine copy has all its clips in the Clips pane too, then you have no choice but to rebuild it from those Clips. But that may not be possible.
Note that the clips in the Clips pane do not necessarily represent the clips as edited by the monk. If they were once stray clips that iMovie moved to the Clips pane, they are the SOURCE FILES of his clips, not the clips themselves. Each source file may support one clip or many clips, and those clip(s) may reside anywhere in the project. (Not necessarily contiguous.) That means it would be virtually impossible for you to reconstruct the project with those files.
And one finaly question, in the Audio Waveforms folder are .aiff.snp files and m4a.snp and m4a.wvf files. What are they? I can't seem to make them play or import them.
Those are files that iMovie uses to draw a waveform of audio clips in the project. They can be ignored. iMovie builds them on its own.
Stepping back for a moment... It's not clear to me why iMovie is being used to prepare clips for Final Cut. If the goal is to import files from the project's Media folder to Final Cut, that probably won't work. Since a source file may support multiple clips located anywhere in the project, they can't be used for that purpose. (The clips will arrive jumbled in Final Cut.)
If clips are on the Timeline where they should be, my guess is the best way to get the iMovie project clips into Final Cut is to export the iMovie project to a Full Quality DV movie that you import to Final Cut, or import the project's project.mov into Final Cut. Then everything arrives in the proper order. If necessary, split the movie in Final Cut.

  • How do I open my imovie files from an external hard drive on a new computer

I'm trying to open my files from an external harddrive and the I don't know how to open it on another computer...the "event" files are confusing and I can't open a file of imovie 08....thanks!

If you used the Finder to move the files, iMovie will have lost track of them. iMovie holds the locations of the Event files, and Project files contain references to those locations. If you move the files, iMovie has no way of knowing where they are.
If you can, first move all the files back to their original locations. Plug in the external drive. Open iMovie and move the files in iMovie's interface (help explains how, but basically, just drag and drop in the event pane).
Then you can connect the drive to the new computer, and iMovie will see them.

  • Can't open old iMovie files

Hi. This has probably been answered before, but I couldn't find any thread about it.
Anyway, I'm trying to open a movie made and saved in an older iMovie program, and it doesn't work.
It starts fair enough by asking if I want to convert it, and starts doing it until 50% has been converted.. But then iMovie always falls out/quits by itself.
Is there anything I can do? Patches? Anything?
And if not, does iMovie 6 fix this bug?

does iMovie 6 fix this bug?
I wouldn't assume it's a bug. There may some tool used to make the old iMovie project -- a third-party plug-in or a font perhaps -- that isn't installed for iMovie 5. (Even if installed, sometimes third-party plug-ins are incompatible with iMovie 5.)
It's almost impossible to diagnose the problem so I wouldn't spend much time trying. Rather, you should continue editing the project with the version of iMovie that created it, or import its video to a new iMovie HD project. (Instead of converting the project.)
The most recent versions of iMovie created a reference movie inside the project folder that you can import into a new iMovie 5 project. Look for the (small) QuickTime movie with the same name as your old project. Drag it into the iMovie 5 timeline and iMovie will import everything in the timeline of the old project to a new project as a single clip. (If that import fails, that suggests an underlying problem with the source video or audio.)

  • Can not open iMovie files

I have a strange problem. I just got a new Intel iMac. I moved all my files over tot he new system, no problem. On my old system, I kept some files out side of the users folder so my wife and I can both access them (iTunes, iDVD, iMove, etc)
I have been running like this years with out issue. But the new system seems to have problems with this arrangement. The problem is limited to iMovie, and limited to my wife account (not scoring any point here ).
I keep these “shared” project files in users folder, but outside of any home folder. So the folders look like this.
    ~\users\iMove
    ~\users\iDVD
    ~\users\iTunes
Also under users are our individual home folders
    ~\users\sunil
    ~users\tish
When my wife tries to open a iMove file she gets an error that the disk is full or she does not have permission to write to this folder. This only happens with iMovie files, the others open fine. From my login I can open iMovie files, as well as other files.
I have checked the permission on the users folder, the iMovie folder and she seems to have rights to read and write to them. Additionally we are both Admins on the system.
Here is what I have tried already (none resolved the issue)
    • Repaired permissions on the volume
    • Verified permission, she has read/write to the folder as well are the files she is trying to open, she is also an admin.
    • Optimized the system (onyx)
    • Reapplied permission, including subfolders.
    • Moved files to another location.
    • Moved files into her home folder
    • Moved files into the shared folder.
    My Config
    Intel iMac 1.5GB
    250GB HDD (125GB) free
    OSX 10.4.7
    iLife 06
    Any ideas?

Sorry, I don't have any firm answers for this situation, but I can offer some guesses.
iMovie seems particularly sensitive to permission issues. Problems can occur when moving projects from startup disk to startup disk, as you've apparently done.
The issues are complicated by the fact that an iMovie 5/iMovie 6 project is a package, a special kind of file that behaves like a folder. The package contains other files and folders.
When you use the Get Info window to assign permissions to the package, the new permissions aren't necessarily applied to the contents of the package. Those items retain their old permission settings, which I suspect is what causes the problem for iMovie. (The Get Info window lets us apply new permissions to the CONTENTS of a folder, but that doesn't work on a package.)
To change permissions inside the package, try this:
    • In the Finder, create a duplicate of the project. Work on the copy.
    • Select the name of copy and remove the suffix ".iMovieProject" from the name. Tell the dialog window that opens to accept the change. The iMovie project icon will disappear, replaced by the normal Finder folder icon. The project will now behave like a folder.
    • Select the folder and use the Get Info window to set permissions for the folder, then press the "Apply to enclosed items" button to apply those permissions to the items it contains.
    • Re-select the name of the folder and add back the suffix ".iMovieProject". When you accept the change, the folder icon will change back into an iMovie project icon.
    • Try opening the project in iMovie. With luck, everything will now work.
When using an external disk to store projects, another solution is to use the Get Info window (for the disk) to set the disk to ignore permissions.

  • Can't open iMovie file after transferring files to another Mac. folder lock

Using Migration assistant I transferred files from Mac to Mac, I can't open an iMovie file because it says, folder locked, permission incorrect, or disk full. I have plenty of memory, tried to change the permissions in the INFO window under file to read and write, thinking I did, and it still doesn't open.
It still says read only. I am a new user on this computer.
I used disk utility to correct permissions. Seems like there must be a simple answer, something I am missing. Help. Thanks, Marjorie

Oh, yes, I use iMovie 6, and Snow Leopard in new computer. I heard that Quicktime 7.6.6 is not compatible ?????

  • Exporting iMovie Files

Was wondering if anyone knows about exporting iMovie files to Final Cut Pro. I have two questions:
    1) Is there a way to actually export the sequence of files (i.e. the timeline) so that you can open an iMovie file in FCP and see the same sequence of files that was laid out in iMovie.
    2) I've split clips in iMovie, yet when I import those files into FCP, the split doesn't appear. In other words, the dv file shows up as the single original clip, and not two smaller clips.
    Thanks!

    jhsimon,
I'd use File>Share>QuickTime>Full Quality DV to output your movie.
Then import the resulting file to FinalCut.

    Hello,
Please help me figure this out. I'm very unhappy at the moment. I'm fustrated and don't have any idea how to revert to the original version before the update was done on iMovie 10. I NEVER hated APPLE until NOW!! I love APPLE products and apps so please help me stay in that mindset. So I worked on some movie projects when I got my macbook pro 6 months ago. I update reguarly. I saw the update prompt and honestly, I did not think I would have ANY issuess with opening my previous files that I created only a few months ago with this updated version. The new updated version of iMovie 10 won't let me open my previous files I created before the update today. I have a wedding that I'm trying to finish and deliver and now I can't because that file version won't open. I keep getting an error message and the iMovie app closes. Last night I saw the file and tried to open it but no luck. Error message came up again. I reboot and turned off my laptop for the evening and tried again just now but nothing!! I need that video. My job depends on it! I worked so hard on this wedding video and now it's lost and won't open. I work another job and don't have much time. I really don't want to start all over again. Please help me. Thanks so much for your assistance.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

  • I have been working on movies in iMovie but after downloading dropbox and exporting iMovies as large files I can no longer open up imovie on the computer.  If I download imovie again, will I have lost all my work ?

Yesterday I was working in imovie.  I exported the files as both Quicktime movies and as large files which I then placed in a Dropbox account.  Subsequently, perhaps because the files were so large, I have been unable to open the imovie programme.  The menu appears but nothing else happens. If I download the software again will I loose all my previous work ?  Has anyone any suggestions ?
    Thanks.

  • IMovie '11 will no longer show project or open the project file

Upon finishing a project, I was ready to do a Share > Export Movie command, and opted first to do a restart on my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie).
Now my project no longer shows up in the projects pane!
While the import of the original footage still exists in the Event Library pane, the project is nowhere to be found in the Projects Library pane.
In addition, while the project file that sits in my iMovie Projects folder is there, it will not open!
When I option click it to open with iMovie, iMovie launches normally (displaying no messages) but does not show the project in the projects pane!
What has happened here?  The iMovie Projects folder is on my internal hard drive and I have not ever moved any files around. Is there any way to get it back?
I have tried to open my project file on a different computer that is networked in the same room, but the same happens: iMovie launches normally, however the project does not appear in the the Projects Library pane.
As a test, I have created a couple new projects that I have named "Test1" and "Test2" and they indeed show up normally every time I launch iMovie or do an "open with iMovie" command from the iMovie Projects folder.  But my origional project just doesn't work. Please help!
If this is of any help: my origional project comprises of a 26 minute MOV file that I have simply imported in iMovie and have added subtitles (no transitions).  I had been working for two days on it, and there were 2 times early on when I had to force quit iMovie because I was getting the spinning ball - I was worried about whether the changes were saved, but each time they were indeed saved and I could access the project normally. (I had considered this was caused by a shortage of memory, so I did not think anything of it.) Since then and up to the moment of the problem, I had occasionally shut down or restarted my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie) with no problems up to now.
Looking through the forum, I have tried 1) logging in/out, 2) logging in as a visitor, 3) creating a new admin account, in addition to 4) subtracting the iMovie preferences file from the Library, but nothing has worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • IMovie will not open a .mov file created in FCPX

I am new to this group and to Mac so please excuse my ignorance.  I edited files in FCPX and "Shared" them with the default settings and they came up in Quicktime with no problems.
I copy the files to an external drive for my client who has a 2 year old iMac running OSX Lion 10.7.5.  She only has audio in Quicktime player and cannot open in iMovie to edit.  She downloaded iMovie 9.0.9 and it still doesn't work.
How can this be???  I am so frustrated having spent this muck money on the best Macbook Pro I could find along with the latest and greatest Final Cut and it won't even go back 2 years with the latest Quictime???  Sorry for the venting and I know I am new....help please!~

BTW my client says that the info breakdown on the clips says:

  • Imovie files folder can't be opened

when i try to open a folder that contains all my imovie files, i get a messaage that says "there is no application specified to open the document "folder name". in other words, it thinks the folder is a file... and it's the same issue on all the folders within the imovie files folder.
when i do i get info on any of them, they're seen as "packages' not folders.
these are the only folders that are behaving this way. fwiw, i just upgraded the ilife suite using software update and i'm running 10.4.10.

If you have finished movies from an earlier version that you want to edit, see the help on how to import them. It will bring in all the video footage, but you will lose transitions, have to redo photos, etc.
If you have the original .dv files from an earlier version, I would think that iMovie 08 would spot them and bring them in automatically if they are still on your hard drive(s).

  • How can I open a .mov file with iMovie?

    Hi,
I keep trying to open a .mov file in iMovie and it isn't doing it. Is that not a recognized file extension? Should I convert the video file somehow?
    Thanks!

.mov is just a container for a variety of video codecs, some of which are not recognized by iMovie.  You will need to convert it first with a third party app such as Media Converter (which is free, see:   http://media-converter.sourceforge.net).
Another free app  VideoSpec (see:  http://videospec.free.fr) is useful for identifying all the details of a video clip
