Opening an .xlsx file

Newer Microsoft Office files are sent to me from my PC friends and arrive as a .xlsx file. I can't open these, If they save them back to .xls, then they open on my Mac. Do I need to upgrade my Appleworks file?

Thanks for the quick reply. I have Office for Mac. Do you think I need to update my version? This only started happening a month or so ago.
Check the MS site for a program to convert .DOCX, .XLTX files back to the older .DOC, .XLT file format.
The Windows version is called Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. Not sure if they released a version for Mac.
EDIT: That should of read XLSX and XLS. Not XLTX and XLT, although those extension are for Templates.
Yes there is.

  • How do I open an xlsx file from a website rather than downloading it?

When I try to open an .xlsx file from a website, it downloads and does not open. Before the last update, it would just open the file. How do I get it to open when I click on it rather than just download it?

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that didn't work...it still just downloads it to the temp file and doesn't open. Any other ideas? It worked before the last update of Firefox.

  • How do i open cpgz.xlsx files?

when i save an exel saves as xlsx file and then try to open it changes to xlsx.cgpz file which does not open?  help

Sounds like it is using the wrong application to "open" the xlsx file. Right click and select Get Info.  In the "open with" section, if it doesn't say Excel, choose Excel then apply to all.

  • GOS - Cannot open .docx/.xlsx file programmatically attached to business object

I am supporting an existing web dynpro application that allows users to attach files to a purchase requsition in SAP.  The current solution allows for a successful attachment and display of .doc and .xls files, but gives an error when displaying .docx and .xlsx files.
The current solution follows this logic:  The code identifies the MIME type of the file to derive the file extension.  Then, it converts the document contents from a xstring type to binary via function SCMS_EXTRING_TO_BINARY.  After the conversion, it creates an initial instance of BO 'MESSAGE' and populates the message container with the required parameters.  It creates the container, refreshes the message object, and gets the key of the new message object.  Then, the code populates the BO object_a and object_b and calls the method   cl_binary_relation=>create_link to attach the file.  Lastly, a commit work statement is executed.  Based on the code samples I have seen online, this solution is logically correct.
I am able to successfully attach .doc and .xls files from this web dynpro application, and then later open them from ME53N.  I am also able to "successfully" attach .docx and .xlsx files from the application.  If I view the attachment list in ME53N, these files are visible.  However, when I attempt to open the attachments, Word/Excel gives me an error message "The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.  The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."  If I click OK to bypass the error, it gives an additional prompt "Word found unreadable content in document.  Do you want to recover the contents of this document?  If you trust the source of this document, click yes."  If I click yes, the document opens.
.docx / .xlsx files attached via ME52N will open without issue
.doc / .xls files attached programmatically via this web application open without issue
these are the MIME types associated with .docx / .xlsx both in the web application and in SAP configuration:
    .docx:   application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document
    .xlsx:    application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet
Does anyone have an idea why the newer document versions appear to be corrupt when opening?  Does the error from Word imply there is a data conversion issue, even though the .doc and .xls documents are readable?  Are the .docx/.xlsx file types unusable with the   cl_binary_relation=>create_link method, and should instead be used with the function 'BINARY_RELATION_CREATE'?
Any help is greatly appreicated.  Thanks in advance!

I replied too quickly.  This change in providing the file size DID help when I was attaching .docx files. They open succesfully now, as well as, .doc and .xls files.
However, I'm still having the same issue when I try attaching .xlsx files.  Furthermore, now .txt files do not display correctly.  Before passing the file size correctly, they were displaying in notepad.  Now, they open in the SAP GUI and only show characters, rather then the actual text.
It seems like this file size typo was just a coincidence for .docx files.  I'm still looking for help on this issue.  Thanks in advance.

  • Opening Excel .xlsx files emailed from Windows computer

I have been unable to open an Excel .xlsx file sent as an attachment from an Windows computer. I did download the free version of WinZip Mac, and although I can open it, it is a read-only file. I want to be able to make changes and send it back as I am able to with .xls files. Stuffit doesn't work either. Apple support doesn't understand why I am unable to access it properly.

Considering you are the sender and receiver the solution should be easy. When you are getting ready to save the file on your MS Windows machine instead of saving do a "Save As" and you will see and option to save as .xls format. Once you do that your MS Windows 2004 version on your Mac will be able to read the file. However I think you're wise considering upgrading to Office 2011 on the Mac, that will be much simpler in the long term and you will have a version much more like your Windows version.
While I never used Excel 2004 on my Mac's I did use Excel 2008 which I disliked. However I have since upgraded to Office 2011 and so far found that to be a really nice product.
    Best of luck,
    Roger

  • How can I open/save .xlsx file using java

    Hi
I have a jsp whose contenttype of response is application/vnd.ms-excel.
When I am saving the file as .xlsx and opening from disk it displays error message.
How can I save and/or open the file as .xlsx?
    Any advice will be appreciated.

Checkout the Apache POI XSSF API or the OpenXML4J API's to create xlsx files and use a servlet to write it to the outputstream.

  • How to have SharePoint 2013 open Excel when opening an XLSX file?

    Hello,
I have SharePoint 2013 and Excel 2010 files in SharePoint.  When I click on the Excel file, it opens the Excel spreadsheet within the
browser, and does not open the Excel application.  I have to click a button to get SharePoint to open the file in Excel.
How can I change this for all users in a site collection, so when they click on the Excel file, Excel is opened with the file?
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Do you have Office for Web Configured, if so you can override the behavior by using PowerShell Cmdlets -
    New-SPWOPIBinding and
    Set-SPWOPIBinding
    see here for more information
Set the default open behavior for browser-enabled documents (Office Web Apps when used with SharePoint 2013)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee837425(v=office.15).aspx
or activate Open Documents in Client Applications by Default in Site Settings->Site Collection Adminstration ->Site Collection Features
alternatively you can also run the below powershell cmdlet to activate the feature (from the above link)
    for specific site collection
    Enable-SPFeature 8A4B8DE2-6FD8-41e9-923C-C7C3C00F8295 -url <SiteCollURL>
    for all site collection
    Get-SPSite -limit ALL |foreach{ Enable-SPFeature 8A4B8DE2-6FD8-41e9-923C-C7C3C00F8295 -url $_.URL }
    Hope this helps!

  • Out of memory error when opening an .xlsx file in numbers v1.6.2 on ipad 2

The file sizes are too small (38KB) for this to be a true "out of memory" issue. Any suggestions? I didn't have any problems before updating numbers to the current version.
I haven't downloaded the new iOS 6 operating system. Is that the problem?

Ended up being a problem with the Excel file we were using. Recreated the file and all was ok.

  • Can I open .xlsx file from mobile Safari webmail in Numbers?

Due to security concerns, my company won't allow me to set up my work email account in Mail on the iPad. I have to use webmail. I can open .xlsx attachments in Safari, but graphs tend to be pretty bad. Is there some way to get Numbers to open the .xlsx file instead of Safari?
I know the company policy is probably lame, but it is non-negotiable so please don't bother addressing that aspect of the problem. Sadly, no matter how impeachable your logic, the policy won't change.

I too can not use mail, but mine is more restrictive, no mail at all from non-approved devices. So I feel your pain.
On to your question, if you have numbers installed on your ipad, then on the bar at the top of the screen where "Done" appears, you will also see either an "open with..." or "Open eith numbers" depending on if you have more than one program installed that can read the document or not.
You will still most likely NOT get your charts to come across like you want them to though. just sayin.

  • Excel 2010 cannot open ~xlsx file from WD ShareSpace

Excel fails to open an ~xlsx file from the Western Digital NAS. It shows downloading .... than fails cannot open file.
The file was previously fine and if it is copied the copy opens easily. If the copy is renamed I can use Excel's recent files option to open it. The old file cannot be opened even if renamed.
I can typically use the file for a day or so, then it becomes unusable. It cannot be opened from another Windows 7 machine either but again a copy is accessible.
The files are small typically 100Kb, password protected
Windows and Office are up to date on both machines
The problem is becoming more frequent with no apparent cause
I have tried opening from explorer, the recently used files list in Excel, and file ... open
I have tried using mapped drive, UNC name, IP address
The network location is recorded as trusted
Although there is the potential to share the file it has not been opened by other users in between working and entering the state where it cannot be used.
When a file is unusable in Excel right clicking in explorer takes a long time to offer the normal context menu. However if the file is selected then copy/paste is quick and unaffected.
Please can anyone help me fix this annoying issue.

    Hi,
According to your description, I have some questions.
Would you share us the whole error message when opening the special Excel file?
Did the copy file work well in the NAS?
Did you move the special Excel file to another NAS folder to test?
Did the special Excel file works well in the local disk (Download it)?
Then, I suppose that the file may be used by other program\handle\process in the background during opening process.  Please try to use the tool named
Handle (It is a utility that displays information about open handles for any process in the system. You can use it to see the programs that have a file open, or to see the
object types and names of all the handles of a program.) to check.
    Steps:
    Copy handle.exe to C:\Windows\system32 folder.
    Run cmd.exe as administrator
Type handle -a C: /Test/test in command prompt, then it will list all handles and processes accessing this folder.
      4. It shows that cmd.exe is accessing c:\Test\test. Then, we can use
handle –c command to close the handles, along with
the handle ID, and the process ID, and the "-y" switch to confirm the delete.

  • DMS file opening problem for docx & xlsx files.

    Hi All,
while opening docx & xlsx files data is getting truncated when they are transmited as external attachments from SRM with ERP PO mail through DMS.
I feel there should be some problem with DMS itself as file format doc, xls are opening correctly as they were mapped with work station type DOC & XLS.
Need your iputs to rectify the problem.
    Thanks,
    Ramakrishna

    Hi Ramakrishna,
Kindly maintain the settings in SPRO->Document Management->General Data->Define Workstation Application (DC30).
For XLS application define file format as *.xlsx and DOC application maintain file format as *docx.
Hope this might resolve ur issue.

  • I can't open .xlsx file in UIWebView.

I can't open .xlsx file in UIWebView. I'm using iPhone OS 4.2 sdk for my development. I got the "Invalid file format" error when I open the .xlsx file.
I founded this article. Here clearly mentioned .xlsx file format not supported in iPhone OS 2.2.1 and iPhone OS 3.0.
Is it possible to open on iPhone OS 4.2 or later?

    Wow....so far behind.
Move to current tools and then try again, pls/thanks.

  • Cannot view and Numbers can no longer open xlsx files

I used to be able to view and open these xlsx files and can no longer do either. I get a blank page with a folder corner page icon and an identifier that the document is xml when viewing. Numbers gives me an out of memory error on import even when I have lots of memory. I used to view these files every day. I believe it is changed since I upgraded to ios 6.
Anybody get this and have it resolved?

It seems I can open raw files taken on an older cannon  Rebel camera - none of them i'd tried to open in CC - but any Raw files from the cannon 5 mk11 even ones i'd previously opened in CS4 and those i've just taken won't open - the Camera Raw option doesn't appear and if trying to go straight to PS it saysPS does not recognise  these files .  Sorry I can manage things until they go wrong then I'm completely non techy - if i select a file in Bridge and right click i'm not sure what you mean by select the menu item to clear the development settings- Purge cache for selection ?? I could open these rebel raw files in camera raw bridge then I could reset camera raw defaults?

  • Services for Object - Store Business Documents (issue with XLSX files)

    Hi,
We are using the Services for Object > Store Business Document to be able to drag and drop files into (for example) Sales Inquiry, Sales Order, Sales Quotations etc.
Within OAC2 we have set up the global document types and these have been linked to the relevant Object Types and Content Repositories in OAC3.  We have also set up the Content Repository as Document Area 'ARCHLINK'.
The ArhciveLink Basic Settings in OAG1 have the 'Always Copy Document Class from Document Type' set under Storage Settings.
The issue we are having is with XLSX document types.  When we drag and drop the XLSX documen type using the Store Business Document the file is stored against the Sales Order but when you come to view the attachments MS Excel opens but an error message appears saying 'Excel cannot open the file '******' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file'?
We have reviewed SAP notes 1925897, 1739026 and 1145885 however non appear to give me a clear answer as to why this is happening?
I have found that if we unselect the option 'Always Copy Document Class from Document Type' in OAG1 then we can open the XLSX files.
As we have a significant amount of documents attached to various objects, what would be the implications of making this change agianst existing records and new records?
Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Gary B

    Hi David,
    No joy I'm afraid!!
I added entry 'xlslx' with the relevant MIME Type, Application and Description into table TOADD for the ArchiveLink settings and also this entry was already in tables SDOKMIME and SDOKFEXT for KPro.
I then following the process via the Services for Object within VA12 (Change Inquiry) to then Create > Store Business document > Select the relevant Document Type > Drag and Drop the XLSX file into the empty box.
I then saved the record and tried to view the attachement but I am still getting the same message  'Excel cannot open the file '******' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file'?
Our client is on componet SAP_BASIS release 701 Support Level 0014 and Support Package SAPKB70114 and I can see that note 1237688 is for SAPKB70112?
