Opening Appleworks Files??????

I recently switched from a Mac Mini running OS 10.4.11 to a new iMac running Snow Leopard. To say that the switch has not been without frustration would be to add a good deal of positive spin to the situation.
The latest problem is that if I attempt to open a file created in Appleworks on the Mac Mini I get an error message saying: "Import Error (file name) is not a presentation" When I then tried the "Open With" command to get around this problem Appleworks is not one of the listed applications.
As recently as a few days ago when I opened another file created in Appleworks Appleworks booted and opened the file. Not having loaded Appleworks on the new machine I wondered how it got there and did a search of the hard drive to find out where it was. Imagine my surprise when it didn't show up.
Does anyone know what's going on here? And what is the best way to deal with the problem.
Thanks,
Win

I've just reached the point where I am no longer willing to devote huger amounts of time/energy to relearning how to use my "tools."
That is simply the reality of using a computer. They change. Software that runs on them changes. Of course, there's no reason that you have to upgrade if you don't want to... As long as your machine works, as long as you can still connect to the internet, as long as you still can print to a working printer that you can still buy ink for, etc., you can just keep right on going with what you're familiar with. If the machine breaks, rather than buying new, you could go to eBay and buy a used one that can run the same OS and applications.
Of course, if you do that, sooner or later you'll be forced to upgrade. Maybe you can't find ink for your printer any more. Maybe some essential component breaks and you can't find a replacement. Regardless, if you wait a long time then upgrade in one giant leap, you've got a major learning curve to deal with. It may or may not, depending on your tastes, be better to try to keep up and learn as you go than to have to make that leap, but it is, of course, your choice to make.

  • How can I open Appleworks files in Leopard?

I installed Leopard as an upgrade on my MacBook without problems. Everything seemed to open and print on my Epson Stylus CX7800 without problems; I was able to scan and print from a scanned file without difficulty; there was even an enhanced print dialog which was great. HOWEVER, when I opened files created with Appleworks 6.2.9, or created and successfully saved a new document and I attempted to print it AppleWorks and the print dialogue either locked up or crashed. I tried massaging everything I knew of but still was unable to print any AppleWorks document. I get the print screen and click print but nothing, nada happens. I cannot print to PDF on the left hand dropdown either.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail. I cannot open the Appleworks files with either Pages or Keynote (did not even recognize the word processing files). When I attempt to, they crash after appearing to open a word processing file but all I got was gibberish! I attempted to open the files with Adobe 8 but it would recognize them and seemed to open them but then I got a "cannot open" message.
I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true? I did find a way to solve my immediate problem but it is not one I like at all. I finally wiped one segment of my external 250GB drive and installed Tiger on it, then copied all my files to that segment. I can load and print Appleworks normally as before. I guess that is one kind of "fix" if a bit unwieldy since I prefer to use my MacBook from my reclining chair because of severe arthritis. ( I will again be out of the loop for awhile as my right knee is being replaced tomorrow.)
I am so curious as to why some seem to be able to use their AppleWorks. I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch? Do you think that would help? I would appreciate any help anyone can give me as there are other problems with Leopard but less onerous than this one. Anyone out there to help the thousands of us who have used AppleWorks extensively as educators?

I have heard that trying to use Leopard with AppleWorks can cause a corruption of the hard drive. Is this true?
No, not at all. AppleWorks actually runs better in Leopard on both my PPC & Intel Macs than it did in Tiger. I have found AppleWorks to be faster & more stable in Leopard on an Intel than any other system I've used.
I repaired permissions (both before and after installing Leopard) and have also dumped AppleWorks preference file, then restarting all to no avail.
There are more than one AppleWorks preferences to delete. Only deleting the .plist or just the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences will not work. They must all be deleted at the same time. Take a look at this user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
Deleting the preferences often fixes printing problems. Also, make sure you have the newest driver for your printer from the manufacturer's web site.
I did install Leopard as an update rather than wiping my HD and doing a new install. Should I delete AppleWorks and all associated files and reinstall AppleWorks and reinstall Leopard from scratch?
Possibly. I chose to do erase & install with migrating users & data for all of my Macs. I did try the upgrade with the MacBook Pro & it was a disaster with failure to start up after installing Leopard. I was willing to take the chance because everything on my MacBook Pro is on my desktop Mac.

  • Can't open appleworks file / resource fork issue

    Hi,
I've just readt the post "Can't open old appleworks/clarisworks files".
My problem was that I got a "I/O error" when trying to open some appleworks files with appleworks 6.2.9.
I realize that I copy those file from my previous disk to a PC formated CD. Hence, some resource fork files should miss.
BUT, I don't have anymore the original files since I re-install my Mac...
If there a way to recover my files despite of this resource fork issue ? Is it possible to create again the resource fork file ?
    Christophe

It's not a resource fork problem. If it were, adding the .cwk extension to the file name would likely fix it. AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, including the OS 8/9 component 6.2.8. If you have the retail version of AppleWorks 6.2.9 or your “consumer” Mac came with an earlier version of AppleWorks 6 that you have updated to 6.2.9 & have Classic installed, you can "Force" AppleWorks 6 to open in Classic to open the files, save them as AW 6 files & then open them in the OS X version. Also, if you have Classic installed & have AppleWorks 5, this can be used to open the ClarisWorks files & save them as AppleWorks 5 which AppleWorks 6.2.9 can open.

  • Open Appleworks - File is locked or in use

Our students are using Appleworks 6. When we came back to school this year and tried to open the application, several students got this error message: The file is locked or in use.
We've gotten this error message in the past when trying to open an Appleworks document, usually when students are opening a file I have put on the server for them and too many are opening it at once. We've never gotten it when just trying to boot up the application.
Any ideas what might be causing this and what the fix is?
    Thanks

I could only find a terse explanation of it...
    About AppleWorks File Repair Utility
This utility is designed to fix AppleWorks documents that have become damaged when the documents are saved from AppleWorks 6 running on a Mac OS X 10.2.x client to an AppleShare or compatible file server.
It's purpose seems very narrow in scope.

  • How do I Open Appleworks files with Microsoft Works

I have MS Works 6.0, and WORD for Windows XP.
My files from school are all in Appleworks 5.0.
    Can I open them?
    HP Pavillion   Windows XP

    Nope.
If it's only the actual text that needs to be transferred, save the AppleWorks files as ASCII Text.
The alternative is to acquire a copy of AppleWorks for Windows (available only from the Education Store).

  • How to open appleworks file in the WINDOWS.

I use the MAC 8.6. I want appleworks file can use in the windows. How i can use applework file in the windows.
Thank you very much for your help.

As suggested in Michael's post, what you do depends on what translators were supplied with the version of AppleWorks you have installed.
With the file open, go to the File menu and choose Save as...
In the Save dialogue, look for a popup menu to choose the file format in which you can save the file.
If there are Windows applications listed in the menu, choose one of them.
If not, choose RTF (if available, although I recall some problems with moving RTF files from Mac to Windows or vice versa), or Text. Neither of these will transfer graphic objects. RTF will keep some text formatting. Text will transfer only the raw text.
If the Windows user has ClarisWorks or AppleWorks (same or newer whole number version) installed, you should be able to transfer the files as AppleWorks files, making sure that you add the .cwk suffix to the file name.

  • Can't open AppleWorks files

We just bought a new iMac with iWork. My husband started transferring his old files to it, but he can't open them. What do we need to convert .cwk files to iWork files?

Is there a way to copy AppleWorks from the iMac G5 to the new computer? Then he can just keep using the old databases.
You can copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the old Mac to the new one, placing it in the Applications folder. Make sure you include all of the support folders as well. If you have customized the Button Bar I would move that preference file to the new Mac. It's located in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks. Do not move any of the other preferences. I suggest burning the AppleWorks 6 folder & the Button Bar preferences to a CD so that you will have a backup copy should you ever need to reinstall again. To remain within the Apple software license, you need to remove the copy from the old Mac.
Also, is there a way to remove the .cwk universally, rather than one file at a time?
The user tip I linked to above can explain how to have AppleScript change whole folders of file names. I wouldn't remove the .cwk extension, though. It's better to have it than not.

  • Opening Appleworks files on a PC

Help! I have to do a CV fairly urgently, and I don't know if an appleworks document can be read by Microsoft Word. Also, if it can be read does the formatting go all to pieces?

    Hi Alayne,
I wouldn't count on a PC being able to open an AppleWorks document saved in AppleWorks format.
If the recipient needs only to read the document (ie. doesn't need to edit it), your best choice is probably to 'print' the document to a pdf file. This will preserve the same formatting as would be preserved in a paper copy, and pdf files can be read by any computer which has Adobe Reader (or other pdf reader) installed.
To create a pdf file (from any application that will print from OS X), open the document, press command-P to print, then click the PDF button in the Print dialogue.
When emailing, be sure you click the "Send Windows friendly attachments" box in the Attach files dialogue. (Present in this dialogue in Mail.)
Caveat: Use fonts that can be expected to be found on the PC. Others will be converted to the PC's default fonts. Even with matching font names, the layout may be changed slightly due to different metrics of the PC and Mac versions of the font.

    Barry

  • Opening AppleWorks files in iWork

Newbie to iWork....will iWork open w/p files created in AppleWorks 6?

This continues to be my nightmare, as well.
I have thousands of AW6 documents saved. Last week, my AW6 stopped working. I took my computer to a local independent guy who works on Apple products. I bought, and he installed, iWorks9, because it was my understanding from the discussion boards here, and from this guy, that ALL my AW6 filles would be usable with iWorks. Well, I got my computer back a couple of hours ago, and I have spreadsheet documents, and word processing documents which WON'T open, because it says -rather annoyingly - that they are presentation documents. Well, they're not presentation documents, because I created them.
I called my computer guy, and he suggested I go through the tutorials. I'm cursing now, having already paid him. Like a car, I want to get in, and go. I don't want to have to 'relearn' driving after each mechanical repair. I did check the tutorial, and unless I'm temporarily in a fog, I don't see this problem addressed.
Will someone please tell me what the freakin' heck is going on, and how to get ALL my old AW6 documents to automatically open, regardless of whether they were word processing, spreadsheet, painting, drawing, or presentation?
    Please.

  • Can i open appleworks files without appleworks?

I have two files in Appleworks format that I need to open and read/convert for someone on a PC. I personally don't have Appleworks (they gave it to me because I'm a 'Mac guy'). Is there any way I can open/convert these to Office so I/we can read them? I'm coming up pretty dry search on the Internets and The Google - it seems like a pretty closed format.
    Thanks

If it's only a couple, you could send them to me, I'll convert them & send them back. Click my name in blue next to this post. My public e-mail address is in the biography section. Just replace (AT) with @. You'll notice while you are in my profile that I am a nurse, so I do understand confidentiality very well & I've done similar conversions for other users here, too.

  • Can't open .cwk files in Office 2004 - Help

Hi, imac intel 24. Running latest software. I have several .cwk files from back when. Now, I can't open them. I believe they are spreadsheets but Office 2004 won't open them. Any ideas? I always get an error saying I need a 3rd party app. Thanks in advance.

Word 2004 can open AppleWorks word processing documents. I have never been able to get Excel to open an AppleWorks spreadsheet though I've seen a couple of other users say they could. Nothing other than AppleWorks can open AppleWorks draw, paint or database files.
You can try icExcel from Panergy Software which can open AppleWorks 5 & 6 spreadsheets. It doesn't save as Excel, but will save as text.
The best option I can think of is to get AppleWorks for your Mac. It will run very well on an Intel Mac.
Since this question is really about opening AppleWorks files, the better place to post would have been the AppleWorks forum. When a question is about using Office, I would normally suggest posting in the Microsoft newsgroup, but I doubt you'd find many users who know anything about AppleWorks.

  • Error opening Appleworks document

Everytime I try and open a Appleworks spreedsheet in Numbers 09 I get this error: "Numbers quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordProcessing plug-in."
I'm running the most recent version of Numbers, version 2.0.4 (184). I do not have any problems opening Appleworks word processor files in Pages. Do I need to change some preference in Numbers to open Appleworks files?

Put that error message in Google and search. Plenty of people have had that problem with various updates. The solutions go from simple to requiring terminal to taking it to an Apple Genius. Here is one thread on the subject:

  • Locked Appleworks File Notice on Desktop

Hello. I have recently noticed an error report on my desktop (actually two of them, both identical) that say ' This file is locked or in use, Would you like to open a copy of it?'. Below that is CANCEL and OPEN A COPY. I first tried clicking on CANCEL with no success and then tried OPEN A COPY, also with no success.
Can someone advise me how to get rid of these two reports? Thank you.
I have just found out that the notice in question came, after an Appleworks file in a Mail message from a friend was attempted to be opened and we were unable to do so, that is when the notice in question came about. The file was an Appleworks file and the message is still in my Mail program. Hope this helps to steer me into a fix.

Usually it is not successful opening AppleWorks files from within Mail, although I have done it inadvertently on a few occasions. It's a good idea to save the file to your hard drive first, just as it is good to save an AppleWorks file locally before transferring them to a flash drive or network drive. It's probably all related to AppleWorks' roots as a single-user application.
That being said, I think it's possible that trying to open the message from Mail may have "confused" AppleWorks. So I would start by deleting the AppleWorks preferences & using Disk Utility to repair permissions.

  • Will pages open AppleWorks document?

Pages works with Word, but will it play nice with older Apple software?

  • Opening '.doc' files created by Appleworks

Hi,I couldn't find any discussion of this so am posting a question.
Pages 2.0 opens all our normal Appleworks word processor (cwk?) files OK, and also opens "real" ".doc" files created by Word (from others, we don't have Word).
Pages won't open Word type ".doc" files saved from Appleworks, and gives a message that it is an incorrect file type. If I use "get info" to remove the .doc extension from the name, Pages will open the renamed file. So pages appears to be okay opening Appleworks saved .doc files only if I remove the .doc from the name.
Kind of hard to do with several hundred files. Any suggestions?
    G42x800, G4Cube, Etc. Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I don't know what the problem is exactly. When I save a document as Word (6 or 98) in AW, no .doc extension is added to the file name. But here is a solution to remove the extension, if that helps:
Create a workflow in Automator. I use Automator on a german OS, I have tried to translate the commands, but you might have to search for the corresponding actions with a similar name.
    - Add the "Get Folder Content" action
    - Add the "Rename" Finder action
    - Select "Replace text" and replace ".doc" with nothing or with "AW doc"
Then save the action as a folder plugin and attach it to a "Convert AW docs" folder.
Any file dropped into the folder will be renamed according to your rules.
