Opening Applications Now Takes Minutes, NOT seconds

As I wait for MS Word 2008 to open I have plenty of time to send this note. It now takes FOREVER to open applications, word, excel, iWeb, iPhoto and others to open.
What's up with that!
Why is this now happening?

Resolve the conflict/corruption in the original account. This can be a laborious process, but is guaranteed to resolve the problem. Create a new admin user account, log into it, backup the bad account's folder (to another volume, partition, or disk), delete the bad account, selecting the *save data* option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it, keeping track of what you're moving to the new account so you can remove them if you encounter problems in the next step. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I took the following steps:
1) Backed up the existing profile (presumably corrupted somewhere);
2) Deleted the existing profile;
3) Moved the existing Firefox to the Trash and downloaded a fresh copy;
4) Started Firefox (thus allowing it to create its default profile)
5) Copied the following files from the backup copy of the previous profile: places.sqlite, key3.db, signons.sqlite, permissions.sqlite, persdict.dat, cert8.db ---
I'm posting this from a Firefox browser, so I guess I'm OK now.

Aperture exporting to email takes minutes not seconds - Is life too short?

I'm writing this while I am exporting 5 images to email on Aperture. I am lucky that I am even able to write this as when I export images it slows down the entire computer and my typing is spluttering while I am doing this. The email has just appeared with the images just now - after about 4 minutes. Ocassionally they take less time but mostly they hang and hang on exporting and as I say slow my imac to a stop. The only adjustments I used in this batch (and most other batches) are exposure, sharpness and dodge and burn.
I am not new to posting my Aperture issues here but just wonder does anyone see an Aperture appearing anytime soon that just " works" or should I just move away from it even though I love it (when it does occasionally work properly) and I am tied in to the system with over 100,000 images in the programme.
I do realise it seems to work for some lucky people whose system seems to be the perfect optimal system. - I would just love it to work for me.

It is not about luck, it is about strong hardware very carefully set up. When we lack the strongest hardware we do our best to develop optimizing workflows. Note that on weaker Macs like your iMac any one thing can bog down Aperture, so carefully implement every one of the suggestions below.
Some generic advice I posted in another thread:
Aperture is a heavy pro graphics app that is very demanding of hardware. Your Mac's CPU, GPU, i/o and RAM are all limiting to Aperture so we need to do what we can to optimize. Some steps:
• Set Previews to only be built manually, and only tell Aperture to build Previews when you are not otherwise editing in Aperture. I suggest setting the size of Previews to be the pixel dimensions of your display.
• Update the OS to the current 10.6.x version and Aperture to the current 3.x version.
• Keep the internal drive underfilled for speed, which sooner or later usually requires using a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives. Back up originals before importing into Aperture or any other images app.
• The Aperture Library should be on an internal drive.
• Turn off Share Previews with iLife and iWork.
• Remember that HDs slow as they fill and keep the internal drive underfilled. Approx. 70% full _maximum_ is a good guideline.
• If page outs increase significantly during operation, max out RAM and/or try to run Aperture by itself. On my C2D MBP with its max of 3 GB RAM I always did a restart prior to a heavy Aperture session to clear any memory leaks and make sure no other apps were open. Browsers in particular will often suck RAM Aperture would otherwise be using.
IMO all Aperture users who can should routinely bump RAM to at least 8 GB.
• Some users have observed that it can take a new Aperture installation time (weeks) to stabilize on slow computers. So do not panic; and allow Aperture to continue background work by not fully shutting down the computer.

Upgraded from 3.6 to 7 - changed nothing else - now takes 50-60 seconds to for the browser to start - works OK after that as long as I keep a window open. I then diabled all plug ins and extenstions - still 60 seconds to load browser.

I down loaded the update for 4 and when I get to the end where is you click finish, it tells me to close firefox, but I do not have it open. Now I can not get in to Firefox at all. PLEASE Help.

You can get Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
You should still have your profile folder, so when you install 3. you will get your bookmarks and other user data back.

Cant open application because it is not supported on this architecture??

the graphics processor on my computer broke so i had to pull files off using the firewire system to connect two computers and when i went to open the address book this appeared "cant open application address book because it is not supported on this architecture". is there any way around this?? thank you.

You copied the Address Book application (which is not where your addresses are stored) from an older system to a newer one, or vice versa. So now it won't run. You'll need to reinstall the system on that machine, or restore Address Book and any other apps you replaced from a backup.

Why doesn't my 3-week old MacBook Air 13" shutdown in about 3 seconds anymore? It now takes about 10 seconds to do so. Last major activity I can think of is the software upgrade which I did yesterday.

My MacBook Air is barely a month and it suddenly shuts down way slower than it used to. It used to take just 3 seconds. I do not have much installed, except for an HP Printer and the MS Office suite. It shut down just as fast even after I installed them.. I noticed it shut down at least about 10 seconds sometime after I updated the software yesterday to Mac OS X version 10.7.1. Is this nornal? I would prefer the snappier shut down process.:-(

Can't open application because it is not supported on this architecture?

Ok so i was gonna get snow leopard tomorrow and wanted to do a clean install and i backed up all my apps,music,movies,dmgs,textfiles,pictures and games none of them work? they all say the same thing and they are only like 1kb but before i formatted and back up it was bigger even now my hardrive has 100gb taken but the software etc. is only 1kb? then i called apple and it turned out my apple care crap has expired and that i had to pay $40 wow how loyal and i said no then they called me to come here what the ****? so please why is my stuff like this. but previously all apps worked. plus when i try to dray pictures movies or songs they turn into this weird blue usb icon thing then when i try to start it says it is a alias?
im on 10.5.4, intel, and my hardrive is ntfs

I think many would agree that your post is incomprehensible.
From what I CAN gather, you backed up your data and apps and formatted your hard disc - yes?
I assume you did not check the backup before formatting, otherwise you'd have seen that your files weren't actually backed-up...
It seems as if you "backed-up" (copied or created) aliases of your files, rather than the files themselves.
There are applications which could attempt to recover your lost data - search for "data recovery".
For the future, be more careful about what and how you back up, and try to be less hasty with your writing too, understanding your questions will help people answer them.
BTW, what's the connection between the subject of your post and its content?

Broke a pen's nib in my ipad sim tray opener hole, now I can not close it fully, what can I do?

I lost my sim opener pin. So I was trying to open my iPad 4 sim with a pen. But the pen's nib broke inside the hole. Now my sim tray is not closing .

Remove the SIM try and try and shake the pen nib out.
You may need a sharp pointed tweezer to help remove nib.

I have had Elements 13 since November & it has been fine until now. Organizer still opens, but now Editor will not load.

Pdf take minutes to open inside of an extracted zip file

I received a zip file in an email. I extracted it and there were 3 pdfs inside. I cliked on one and the hour glass would just appear and at the top of the pdf it would say "not responding". It finally will open but it takes minutes. Same issue for the other 2.
What is preventing this from opening? I have checked Control Panel and deleted all other pdf applications. Ran Registry Cleaner and cleared Temporary internet and Windows Files from my Norton Security Suite
I do not have any problem opening individual pdfs that I receive or create from insurance company pdf creators inside of their software.
I am running Adobe Reader 10.1.1 on Windows Vista. I have a friend who also seems to have the same problem who is also running Windows Vista.
I have a new laptop running Windows 7 64 bit but there is no issue opening the pdf in that same zip file received.

I went back to the zip folder, right cliked on it and cliked on extract all. Then tried opening each one and it just hangs. It still hasn't opened and it is now at least 5 minutes.

HT4721 Before the new upgrade, I was able to swipe to the left to exit out of open applications. How do I do that now with the upgraded software?

That's a little strange, because I don't think that was ever an option for trackpad gestures in OSX. At least it's not an option in System Prefs > Trackpad
You can set this up with BetterTouchTool, though.

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .
