Opening Applications Open Behind Current

Hello.
Strange problem. Every time I open a new an application, using the Finder or the Dock, it opens behind the current window. This happens with all applications no matter which window I have in front. It even happens when I open a file; it opens in the back.
What could be going on now? =[

Hi
Does it happen if you open apps direct from the /Applications/ folder
You could set up another User Account and see if the same thing happens

  • Window priority -- opens behind current application -- help

Hi. I've had a mac for a few months now, but I think I've broken something.
I have a vague recollection of changing some sort of windows compositor thing by following instructions on a site somewhere. The problem that I'm having now is that windows are opening in the wrong order in terms of priority.  Sub-windows are opening behind the window they're generated from. This is an ordering issue.  So, for example, I open a graphics image which fires up GIMP for me.  GIMP opens it, but it's behind another window.  Or I run a Python program to display graphical output (say, Matplotlib graph) and it opens behind the Eclipse window.  So I have to manually navigate to these new windows to see it.  Unfortunately, searching for "window display order" or "window compositor" or similar just doesn't seem to click with what I must have changed earlier.
My recollection is that ther are a number of "compositors" which you can choose to do your window management.  If this is correct, then I've chosen one that isn't doing a good job. Only I can't remember how to change these, or even what I used.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    A

  • New windows opening behind current one?

I can't seem to find a preference to change where you can have new windows open in front of the current window when you command-click a link...
I'm ready to downgrade from what is turning into a truly annoying experience...

I don't use tabs, they hinder my work...
I turn tabs off.. then command click links to open in new windows.. but the new windows now open behind the current window... which is counter intuitive. the new window should open in front...
I can't seem to find a preference to change it to the way the Safari 2 works...
I think I just need to downgrade Safari.. there's too many irritating "features" in it that can't be turned off..

  • Opening apps/Safari windows-want them to open behind current window ?

Ok, maybe small beer, but, when I open a Safari window from, for eg, google reader, the new window opens in front of my current Safari window, the window I am reading. This means that it covers my current window, which is annoying, to me. Similarly, when I open an application, the new app insists on coming to the front, and interrupting my work. As I said, small beer, but annoying.
Is there a way to make all new Safari windows and new apps start 'behind' the currently active window/app?

No. Why are you opening new windows when you don't want to act in them? Don't open them and you won't be disturbed.

  • New windows open behind current explorer window

Every time I open an image or a video from within explorer, photo viewer or WMP opens it behind that explorer window, and I have to click over to it - why is it not taking focus and opening the new window on top?

This may not work for everyone and I don't know what other ramifications may appear, but what I finally did was: click on Configure ObjectDock; Settings; Troubleshooting Options; under System Hooks tick Temporarily disable all special Window-Event hooking.
So far no adverse effects otherwise and my media programs open on top as they should.

  • Applications opening behind desktop.

When I open a new application it is opening behind the already open application on the desktop. i,e, if I have Safari open and open System Preferences it open behind Safari. Any ideas please?

    Hi, Jon.
I've seen a couple of cases of this and in each case it turned out that the person was using a third-party mouse whose batteries needed replacement. I know it sounds strange, but those were the circumstances.
PS: What you describe in your post is that the new application opens behind the current or frontmost application, i.e. the application with focus, not "behind the desktop."
    Good luck!

  • Is there a way to have new windows/links open behind the current open window, running Mavericks?

I would like to have new windows that open from links, or when I "right-click, open new window", to open behind the window I am reading from, working from, browsing, etc. I often am doing research, and opening multiple supplemental links, but do not like having to click back to the page I am working from every time.
A separate choice when I right click, to "open in new window behind current window" would be great!

There is no add on that I know of that can do this, but there has been an implementation found for javascript via this link:

  • IE 8 causes some windows to open behind the current page

Boy, this is a weird one!
We have just upgraded a few of our machines to Internet Explorer 8 (from 7) and our intranet site - whihc works perfectly on 7 - has developed a few "oddities."
When the user clicks a link that opens a document, the document appears in the foregound - that is, in front of the page where the user clicked the link.  This is a good thing.
However, when the user clicks a link that opens Window Explorer to display a directory's contents, it opens behind the page where the user clicked the link.  If the browser is full screen, the only clue the user has that the link opened is the task bar.  As you can imagine, how many times do users actually look at the task bar?  Instead, they assume the link is broken and call for support.
In IE7, both types of links opened in the foreground, and that is what we want to continue happening.  And no, changing to a different browser isn't the answer.  We are stuck with IE8.
The links are coded like this:
    <a href=\\System Directory\Folder\Folder\" target="_blank">See the Folder</a>
    <a href=\\System Directory\Folder\Folder\Document.pdf" target="_blank">See the Document</a>
Our operating system is XP Professional.  We have not installed any add-ons for IE8.  We haven't been able to determine if the problem is IE8, Win XP, or out ColdFusion code.
    Please help!

Our operating system is XP Professional.  We have not installed any add-ons for IE8.  We haven't been able to determine if the problem is IE8, Win XP, or out ColdFusion code.
One thing it is definitely not, is CF.  This is browser behaviour, a CF doesn't run on the client machine.
    This can be demonstrated easily:
    <a href=\\System Directory\Folder\Folder\" target="_blank">See the Folder</a>
    <a href=\\System Directory\Folder\Folder\Document.pdf" target="_blank">See the Document</a>
Save this as an HTML file (like: with an HTML extension), and browse to it, and click the links.  You will probably see the same behaviour with the HTML file as you do with a file processed by CF.

  • New window opens behind, etc.

I'm running Safari 4.0.5. Several things are happening. I can't launch Safari directly from the dock. The Safari icon on the dock open a finder window with the Safari icon, from which I can launch Safari.
After several minutes of inactivity, the address bar will not accept input. Clicking on the bar moves the bar. I'm lucky if re-launching Safari solves the problem. Then there are the windows. When I click on a link, the new window opens behind the old one. Clicking on the window does not bring it to the front. I have to move the original window out of the way in order to enter text or click on links in the new window. Sometimes, the dock indicates Safari is running, and there is a Safari window open, but not active. Clicking in the window does not make Safari active. Sometimes Safari is active and I want to go to the Finder. Clicking on the desktop does not take me to the Finder.

    HI John,
Move the current Safari icon off the Dock. Just click and drag the icon straight up until it goes "poof".
Now go to your Applications folder and try launching Safari from there. If you can, then you will see a new Safari icon in the Dock. Click that then click: Options/Keep in Dock. or just Keep in Dock.
You may need to reset Safari and empty the cache also.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still have problems...go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
If you still have problems, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • Is there a fix for modal dialogs opening behind palettes -cs6 -osx 10.6.8

Is there a fix for modal dialogs open behind palettes in
Photoshop cs6 13.0 (createive cloud update) + OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro?
( I am using 2 monitors where the second monitor is set to be the menu display.  cs4 does not exhibit this bug. )
Toggling the Application Frame off improves the hiding 'feature' but this does not include the desired continuous floating in front of palettes in all circumstances.
An example is Blending Options, then chose Stroke, then chose the Color Picker.  After clicking OK, the Blending Options dialog now sits behind the palettes.  One trick is to click on another app, then back to cs6 to force a window redraw.
It sure would help me if this could be solved.  I am preparing educational videos and this display bug makes things very troublesome.
Thanks for any help.  If I find a solution, I will post to this thread so everyone can benefit.

The setting for the graphics check box Does Not make a difference.  If I have a new document window open, then add a layer, then open the blending options > drop shadow > edit the color > the chooser dialog opens, and immediately both dialog windows drop behind the palettes AND any document windows.
The same behavior for the Preferences dialog > guides > color.
The quick workaround is to click another app, then back to CS6.  A real pain, of course.
It is only a factor when opening a second (child) dialog box.
Other CS6 apps do work correctly (eg. FW AE)
I have yet to get a handle on this.  Mac OSX 10.6.8    CS6 13.0  x64
Thanks for your replies, and the long reply time for me was a vaction away from the office.

  • Can't open iPhoto after installation .Displays message :You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto

Can't open the program after Installing . Shows message " You can't open your current current photo library using this version of photo.
Made several attemps in fresh instalaltion without any success.

So I assume it is version 9.3, not sure?
Look at the application in the Finde, if you cannot launch it.
Select your iPhoto application in in the Applications folder and use the command "File > Get Info". What does the Info panel show in the "General" brick?
If it says 9.4.3, try to launch iPhoto by clicking the iPhoto icon in the Applications folder. Does that work?

  • Yet AGAIN! "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto"

I have read every thread on this topic I could find in these forums, and tried most solutions, and I still can't get iPhoto to work.
Equipment:  MacBook Pro June 2010, OS 10.6.8.  Bought a Macbook Air February 2012, OS 10.7.2
Not sure why, but I can't open iPhoto.  Here's what I have tried.
Original message on MBPro:  "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto".
    1.  Tried to rebuild library as per this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/8429269#8429269.  I get the list of checkboxes, but when I hit "okay" I get the same "you can't open your current photo library ..." message again.
    2.  Ran software update - no sign that iPhoto is out of date.
    3.  Copied new version of iPhoto from brand new MBAir to MBPro, replacing older version .  Got same "you can't open your current photo library ..." message again.
    4.  Tried to rebuild library using new version of iPhoto - guess what - same message.
    5.  Downloaded free trial version of iPhoto Library Manager as suggested in the thread referenced above.  The dmg loads to my desktop just fine but nothing happens when I click on it -- this has never happened before.  Perhaps it is looking for iPhoto, which of course I can't get to work.
So I have been unable to access my old iPhoto library with (sob) thousands and thousands of family photos in it.  I run TimeMachine on to an external hard drive every hour so I hope that if my iPhoto library is corrupted, there is a safe copy on that external drive ...
Between this hassle -- hours of time wasted -- and recent debacle of upgrading iTunes which erased my library and all of my playlists, which also took hours and hours to restore ... my 25 year devotion to Apple products is taking a major hit.  I'm getting very weary of heart-pounding fear every time a new software upgrade arrives ... but that's a topic for another time. ;-)
Thank you very much indeed for all suggestions.

I'm going to start from scratch as  the link you references is very, very old.
Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library and import some photos. If you are able to then the problem lies with your current library. If you get the same message then maybe the iPhoto application is the problem.
Try the following again:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy)  of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If all of these fail there's one more option:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the each subfolder in the Originals folder (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the entire Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

  • You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.

I tried to open iphoto this morning and recieved this message: "iphoto damaged or incomplete." There was also a white circle with a slash through the icon in both dock and applications folder.  Recently I had loaded idvd from ilife since it was not included on my MBP.  I reinstalled iphoto using the disc and then the following began to occur.
I received this message when I tried to launch iPhoto after reinstalling. Yesterday it was working fine. "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto." It gave me the option of quitting but nothing else.
I followed directions on another thread to rebuild using the database by holding down command+option while launching iphoto.  None of my folders came back and all the photo boxes are empty, although there are dates.
I do have a backup on an external but am not sure how I would restore using that (I've never had to in the past).
This is iphoto 11 - version 9.1. I am unsure how to check what version was installed when I purchased this MBP (Nov. 2012). I am also runnign OSX 10.8.3
Is there anyway to remove the update and recent install and revert to what I had yesterday? Or even two days ago?
Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to have to re-create my folders.
    Thanks in advance!

When you installed iDVD, you must accidentally also have reinstalled and downgraded iPhoto.
This is iphoto 11 - version 9.1. I am unsure how to check what version was installed when I purchased this MBP (Nov. 2012). I am also runnign OSX 10.8.3
You have two options, either delete your current iPhoto version and reinstall iPhoto from the AppStore, or go to the -menu and run Software update to upgrade your current iPhoto version to iPhoto 9.4.3, the current version.
To reinstall: See this document http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
Scroll down to the paragraph: Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
It explains how to reinstall the bundled iLife applications, that came preinstalled, from the AppStore.

  • When I open a new window, it opens behind the exist ing window instead of in front of it. How can I fix this?

When I click on a link and I choose the option to open link in a new window, it opens behind the currently open window instead of in front of it. This is a real nuisance. Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?

    Hi alanbala,
There are several possible reasons why the new window opens in the background and not in the foreground by default.
    # another installed program is causing this
    # the Firefox main window is set to Always on Top
    # probably a Windows 7 bug
    # possibly a Firefox bug [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=790013 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=790013]
    What you can do is
    # update your Windows 7 to the latest security patches
    # open Mozilla Firefox in Safe Mode (see KB article [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]])
    # evaluate the other programs installed on your computer
    # open new links on a new tab
Let us know your progress. I will be following this support thread.

  • I've backup  my iPhoto on WD My Passport.  When I try to pull up the photos from the external hard drive onto a different computer,  it says "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto."  It says I have to use a later version.

After backing up my photos on a My Passport hard drive I can't open iphoto from the hard drive.  It says "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iphoto.  You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto."  I have done all the upgrades for iphoto.  Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

What versions of iPhoto and OS X are on each computer? You can find out by going to your iPhoto application (from the Applications folder), clicking it once to highlight it, and click cmd-i to open its information window. The version number is in the General tab.
Your version of OS X can be found from the Apple menu, then About This Mac.
The latest version of iPhoto (9.5.1) requires OS X 10.9, so if you have an older version of OS X on that computer, you will have to upgrade to Mavericks and then upgrade to the newer iPhoto.
