Opening apps/Safari windows-want them to open behind current window ?

Ok, maybe small beer, but, when I open a Safari window from, for eg, google reader, the new window opens in front of my current Safari window, the window I am reading. This means that it covers my current window, which is annoying, to me. Similarly, when I open an application, the new app insists on coming to the front, and interrupting my work. As I said, small beer, but annoying.
Is there a way to make all new Safari windows and new apps start 'behind' the currently active window/app?

No. Why are you opening new windows when you don't want to act in them? Don't open them and you won't be disturbed.

  • I don't want PDF files openning in Firefox, I want them to open in Adobe Reader

Both old PDF files that I have saved and new PDF files I have made and downloaded are openning in Firefox. Some people my like that but I don't, please tell me how to shut this off.

    Hello Osprey,
If you are using Windows, you have to right-click a .pdf file, then click on "open with", here you can choose with which program the PDF files will be automatically opened.
Another solution is to go in your control panel, then in "Default Programs", you'll be able to do the same. You can refer to [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-default-programs#1TC=windows-7 this article] .

    Hi
Please take a look to this thread Re: Can I refresh the browser rather than open a new tab?

The format keeps changing but the basics remain...in the center of the screen are large images of the recent apps which you can close by swiping up and away.

  • Dreamweaver not opening in safari on mac w maverickOS opens in other browsers

It's been working great.  I did upgrade to Mavericks a few weeks ago. When I'm testing my site, now dreamweaver does not opening in safari on mac but still opens in other browsers.

Thanks Nancy. Ok,  I just tried removing and then adding Safari (shutdown, restart)  and it still opens my top sites page in safari when I test.  It could be in the settings on Safari .  Here's a screen shot of my safari settings.

  • FF4 wont move a tab to a new window. The new window opens fine but the existing tab stays on the current window. What's wrong?

I just upgraded to firefox 4. I'm using session manager extension.
I have multiple tabs open in my firefox window and I want to move some tabs to a new window. I followed the support guide which tells how to do this, however, when I drag the tab off the current window, the new window gets opened as it should, but the tab I was trying to move stays in the current window and does not get moved to the new one. Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thanks
    Mick

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • Firefox opens "small" and I want it to open maximized---How??

Firefox opens in a small window at the upper right. I can maximize it myself but I want it to open maximized all by itself

Go into FF Preferences & set it to be your default browser.  This way when you click on an email link in Chrome, FF will open.

  • Finder insists on opening new windows behind current window

A new behavior of Finder (10.5.5) started this morning, and it's annoying as heck:
Every time I double-click a folder, the new window appears behind the source window. The new window has the same view characteristics as it did when it was closed (size, view, sort order, etc.), but it's "one behind" the window containing the folder I double-clicked.
    Thing to note:
Sometimes, changing the view of the folder, closing it, and reopening it will cause it to open on top again. Sometimes not.
Deleting all of the .DS_Store files with "sudo find . -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;" from my home directory did not affect the behavior.
That I can tell, I have not changed anything on my machine in the last 24 hours.
This happens with folders which are on shared drives (even ones where I have no write permissions, so no .DS_Store possibility) and local drives.
    As LOLcat would say, HALP!
    Thanks,
    Bill

Turns out, it was a new mouse on the USB. I had the double-click speed set to its fastest position (in the Mouse/Keyboard System prefs), and the net result was that double-clicking was, for some reason, acting like a triple-click, the third click bringing the first window to the fore.
Dell mouse problem? Mouse/Keyboard System prefs problem?
Dunno', but I'm glad that problem's gone.

  • When I click on links, I want them to open in another tab. They keep opening in another window, even though I went to the settings to try and change that.

How do I get it to open in tabs instead of windows? I went to Options>>Tabs and unchecked "open new window instead of tab". I can't figure out what else to do.

    Thanks so much! :)

  • When a pdf file opens in Safari, then I can no longer select a window

When I go under the Window menu and select one, nothing happens. If I close Safari and re-open this seems to fix the problem temporarily until the next time I open a pdf window.

It took me a while to learn the potential of tabs, but I quickly found them addictive, although there are times when two windows are still better in my opinion, such as comparing a table, say, and an update to that table.
I have been using PDF Browser Plugin Since Safari 1.x. It works with all browsers and not just Safari. I have not seen a PDF in Safari without the plugin, so I cannot say how it is different. I can say that it has its own toolbar which will allow you to open the complete document that contains the page you are viewing, save or print the pdf, lets you adjust the document on the screen and to zoom in or out, and it will also rotate the document if needed (or even if not if you click on the button).

  • I do not want my firefox to open in tabs, I want it to open different windows, how can I reset it back to open in a seperate window?

I do not like opening up a tab and then typing in a URL to go where I want to go. It was much better when I could search for something, and it would come up in a separate window. How do I change it back?

You can hold down the Shift key while left-clicking a link on web pages.<br />
You can add a New Window button to a toolbar via "View > Toolbars > Customize" to open a new window when needed. You can also drag (text) links onto that button to open links in a new widow.

  • Excel downloads, want them to open

when I go to a Url that is an Excel doc, Safari downloads it to the Download folder
I just want the file to Open, is there a setting somewhere ????
I end up with multiple copies of this thing

    Hi ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the General tab.
Select:  Open "safe" files after downloading
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Attachments open in same tab - i want them to open in a new tab

I work in school recruiter (used for taking work applications for school system) and open a lot of attachments to applications. When I close the attachment, it closes me out of school recruiter. I need the attachments to open in a separate tab. Where do i go to set that?

You can open regular (i.e. non-javascript) links in a new tab with a middle-click or a Ctrl + left-click on that link.
The above mentioned setting in Options only applies to links that would open in a new window and allow to redirect the link to a new tab instead.

  • I had a problem with my mouse double(multiple) clicking when I didn't want it to, now pressing enter in a window like this will close the current window and open one of my Taboo sites, and the cursor keys don't work.

This happens in any text entry window, but there is no problem with Wordpad or Word or other apps, just in Firefox. It's like the keyboard mapping has gotten fouled up in Firefox, but I can't find where I might check what is going on.

You may have '''Switched ON Caret Browsing'''. press '''F7 (on Mac: fn + F7)''' to toggle '''Caret Browsing ON/OFF'''
    * click '''Firefox''' button and click '''Options''' -> Advanced -> General -> remove
Checkmark from '''Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages'''

Check and tell if its working.

when I open Firefox. Can't find that setting

This is set in the same place you would set your home page.

Please note that occasionally something goes wrong and your saved session is lost. People who have reported this here (in very angry posts!) often refer to an update, either of Firefox or a third party application that uses the browser. To help protect against session loss, consider making regular backups of your active settings folder (Firefox profile folder) and also making use of the feature to Bookmark tabs.
