John, you can download Neo Office, which will open Power Point files. You can download it from here:

  • Sending attachments that stay open

I am sending out newsletters to some of my clients (most with PCs). Right now I'm creating the newsletter in Pages and then sending it out as a mass email (well, to over 20 people) as a PDF attachment (people were telling me that their PCs couldn't open my attachments if I just sent them without converting to PDFs). When I send the attachment, it comes up open on my screen, but then converts to an icon on their end. Is there someway for me to keep this page open so that when they retrieve their email, it looks more professional, rather than them having to click on an icon which they will likely just ignore?
Whew, that was longer than I intended. Sorry. Thank you, in advance, for any help you can offer.
    Tara

    You're welcome.
I get other newsletters that are just there when I open it up,
    how are they doing this?
They are using an HTML composer/editor. Some email clients (namely Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express) include a built-in HTML composer that adds bloat to an email client which the Mail.app does not include and I hope that Apple never does.
Or they use a separate HTML composer/editor. You can use the Text Edit application for this purpose or continue using Pages and work with changing the format/layout until it appears in Safari as you like/prefer. Once you get there, you can use this saved document as a Pages template to send future Newsletters.
The problem with sending HTML via email is there is no guarantee the formatting as it appears on your end will appear the same when each recipient opens the message. Sending a PDF file as an attachment guarantees all formating will be the same when the document is opened by all recipients.
Copied from Why HTML in E-Mail is a Bad Idea which you should read in its entirety.
Because it introduces accessibility problems. When you write in plain text, the receiving mail client renders the text in whatever font the reader chooses. When you format email with HTML, the sender controls the formatting. But this is a trap: You only think your message will render the same way to the viewer as it appears to the sender. In reality, the receiver can end up squinting because the font looks so tiny, or vice versa. HTML is not rendered the same way from one viewing client to the next - all guarantee of accessiblity goes out the window.

I imagine your clients must be using Outlook, which is seriously broken when it comes to e-mail standards, especially HTML e-mail. You can work around the issues with Outlook by only sending plain-text e-mails and making sure that, in the Edit -> Attachments menu, the last two options are checked. Unfortunately, that means that HTML signatures are out.
If you need something with a fancy layout, either attach a PDF file to the e-mail or include a link to a website in the e-mail.

  • I can not open adobe files. mainly ones that end in doc. I purchased the 19.99 to convert .doc files

I can not open adobe files that end in .doc. I purchased the 19.99 to convert doc to pdf and I still cant open. I get an error reading.

    Hi,
Which Adobe Service did you purchased?
If you have purchased CreatePDF please visit: https://createpdf.acrobat.com/SignIn.html
Sign in with your Adobe ID and password, and then convert your word doc into PDF.
Please let me know if that works.
If you have Adobe Reader, you cannot convert .doc file to .PDF by drag and drop.

I am not able to open the pdf attachments that someone sent me it comes up with a gray box saying adobe cannot open?

Make sure the pdf has the '.pdf' extension on the file name. I've seen this a few times and adding the extension usually solves the problem.

I clicked to install a new version after updating and clicking repair. But still the attachments won't open including invoices I have received today. It is all attachments not just pdfs.

Then most likely it is not caused by Adobe Reader.
Anyway, perhaps someone has some idea, if you give us some details: operating system, browser, email client, ...

Do you know how I can estabilsh how many apps are counting toward this 10 and what they are?

  • Is there a plug-in for Firefox 4.01 that allows tabs to open at the end? Millions of people do multiple searches on eBay and Craig's List - it is a pain to have to look at the results after each search instead of reviewing them when the searches are done

The the only answer I have found to this question does not apply to Firefox 4.01. The Plug-in for allowing tabs to open at the end that works in older versions of Firefox does not work in 4.01. I would like to know if there is a plug-in that works for 4.01 or when or if we can expect one.

Open new tabs on far right, restore pre Fx3.6 behavior, set '''browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent''' to '''false''' in '''about:config'''
For more information see item #36 in ...
You can make Firefox 4.0.1 look like Firefox 3.6.17, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 look like 3.6)]

I recently purchased an Iphone 6plus and I am receiving pdf attachments that are shown as winmail.dat attachments on the iphone. When I check the same e-mail on my macbook pro the attachment is a pdf and I can open it. Why is this happening?

I had this problem too after i upgdatd to OS X Mavericks... only the songs on my iphone 5s that i purchased from itunes would play.
i read something about it being a syncing issue. when you plug your phone into your computer with the usb cable, the person said to switch from automatic syncing of itunes to the "manual" option. mine was already set to manual so i wasn't sure anything would work. BUT, when i plugged my phone into my computer, it started to sync all of my music on my phone again (top of itunes bar where song playing/time is listed said "now syncing 123/534 songs to x's iphone"). once that was completed, i checked the music app on my iphone and everything was back to normal!
so, i would suggest setting your music syncing settings to manual if you haven't tried that yet!
    hope this helps!

  • When i try to go to pages that end in .aspx, instead of opening the page Firefox tries to download it as a file. How to I make Firefox to recognize .aspx sites?

I downloaded the latest version of Firefox this morning. Firefox is treating sites that end with .aspx as files and not web pages. I NEED to be able to open .aspx sites on Firefox. please advise.

  • Can,t open word,PDF or excel attachments that get sent to me what am I doing wrong?

Can't open attachments like Word, excel or PDF files I get sent what am I doing wrong?

What have you tried?  Ifmyou just tought the attachment, it will open in sort of a quick view mode.  For all of the file types you mentioned.  If you touch and hold, a small window will open and suggest other apps, if you have any loaded, that will also work with those file types.
So what happens when you tap an attachment?

  • Has a patch been released that prevents my iPad from opening attachments?

As of Friday, October 7th, none of our iOS devices have been able to open attachments in messages sent to Live@Edu accounts.  For example, we get a grey screen with the message "Office Open XML word processing document" when trying to open an attached Microsoft Word document.  Does anybody know if Microsoft or Apple released any updates/patches to cause this?

If Apple has released any updates, you'd know about it because the only way to get them is to sync your iPad to iTunes and deliberately allow iTunes to update the iPad. Whether Microsoft has made any changes to Live@Edu I don't know; you'd have to contact Microsoft.
If it's just Word documents that have problems, I'd suspect a problem at Live@Edu, though I can't say with certainty. Can the iPads open Word documents sent via other email services or, if the iPads have Pages or another app that can open Word documents, transferred directly from iTunes?
    Regards.

  • I want my new tabs to open at the end of the row of tabs, how do I do that?

When I open a new tab, I would like it to open at the end of the row of tabs, not next to the tab I'm on now. I'm used to it opening on the end like it did in older versions of Firefox. I'm sure this is an easy fix but I can't find anything in options and I'm getting frustrated.
    Thanks!

Hello callagalla, go to [http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config about:config] find(or copied/paste from there) '''browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent''' and double-click on it to make it FALSE.
    thank you
