Opening backed up iCal on a different mac?

Hi,
My MacBook had to go in for repair (sob!) but I've got everything backed up on an external hard-drive courtesey of Time Machine and SuperDuper! My boyfriend has a MacBook, however when I try opening my iCal or Address Book etc on his MacBook (via my external harddrive), his iCal or Address Book opens. I've done a Spotlight search for one of my contacts, which can be found, but when I click on it, still his address book opens, but not mine.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks! Marie

  • Syncing iCal on two different Macs

I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac and would love to sync my calendars but don't know how. Can someone help me? And no, I don't have access to iDisk, i.e., MobileMe.
    Appreciatively,
    Ron

DropBox is fairly straight-forward, see here: [http://mac-curious.com/2009/08/sync-ical-using-dropbox/|http://mac-curious.com /2009/08/sync-ical-using-dropbox>
In practice, that only syncs desktops and doesn't help with your phone. It's also a little dangerous if you have multiple computers opening and modifying the files in Dropbox at the same time (as far as I know, iCal isn't designed to recognize when the files are being changed by another program while it's running).
A better idea is to use Google Calendar. In that scenario, your reference calendar is Google, and everything syncs with it. You need to first make an account on calendar.google.com. After you've made the account, you can create multiple calendars, share them with others, and access calendars they share with you.
Follow these instructions here for adding your Google calendars to iCal: [http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=99358#ical|h ttp://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=99358#ical]
They work just like local calendars, but the data is copied to/from the Google servers.
Your iPhone also has built-in CalDAV support for connecting to Google calendar. On the phone, go to the Setting application and click on Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Click on Add Account... then "Other". Click on Add CalDAV Account and provide your Google calendar info (server is "www.google.com", username is your e-mail address, password is your Google account password).
If you use Google calendar, you can have several calendars in iCal / on your iPhone. When you modify a calendar, the client changes the local copy and the copy on the server at the same time (and those changes propagate to everyone with access to that calendar, including everyone you've shared a calendar with).
For what it's worth, you can do basically the same thing with Google and Address Book. I haven't set that up yet, but I'm considering it.

  • Same iCal on different macs with Exchange.

Is it possible to use the same iCal on 3 different macs and a iPhone ? All of them are connected to the same Exchange mail account. Other question, if two users on the same mac are connected to the same Exchange mail account, are they able to share the same iCal, maybe using different colours ?

Then get them off of there. They shouldn't be there in the first place. :^)
Seriously, never capture to your internal system drive. You are more prone to dropouts. Get yourself an external firewire drive, 7200 RPM, 8MB buffer, and copy the entire contents of the FINAL CUT PRO DOCUMENTS folder onto it. Then delete it from your internal hard drive...AFTER you confirm they are all present and working by using your G5.

  • Can you open a Garageband project as it was on a different Mac?

Not sure how to phrase this question, but essentially I need to open a Garageband project on a different Mac to make edits. Not just an mp3 or wav, I mean the actual project in which you can make changes to your song and then export. I see that there is a .aiff file for each individual track in the project, but I need the actual project file. I see there is a 4 kb .band file, would that allow me to do so? Sorry for the dumb question

I see there is a 4 kb .band file, would that allow me to do so? Sorry for the dumb question
The .band file is your project file, yes. If you transfer this file, you should be able to continue to work on the project, provided you have compatible GarageBand versions - the same version or newer. And the same instruments and loops should be installed.
Have you used any custom instruments or loops, that you created in GarageBand and saved to the Instrument library or to the Loop Browser? If you used such custom items, you would have to transfer them as well.
    What is your GarageBand version?

  • HT201250 Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?

Can I use Time Machine on two different Macs to back up to one external drive?
I have one 1T Western Digital backup drive that works well with Time Machine and my MacBook Pro.  I now want to back up my wife's MacBook Air using Time Machine on her Mac and want to know if I can use the same WD external drive or if I need to get a 2nd back up drive?  If I can use one external drive for the two Macs do I need to do something special on the drive or will Time Machine do it automatically?

Yes. You will need to configure Time Machine preferences on each computer to backup to the same drive. Note that you cannot connect the backup drive to both machines at the same time.

  • Opening project on different mac

if you have no file to save how can you open a project on another mac. I have a project where all the sound files are getting mixed up. i've tried everything but it always exports with the sound messed up. the only thing i can think to try is opening it up on a different mac and trying it. How do i do that?

You need an external hard drive, formatted Mac OSX Journaled - use Disk Utility t format if need be.
Connect the drive, open iMovie and within iMovie move the project *and all the Events* to the external drive.
Connect the drive to the other Mac, open iMovie, and edit (or copy across to that Mac's hard disk, but you can edit from the hard drive. If you want to edit on the portable, it is smoother if it's a Firewire drive

  • Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.

Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.
I want to be able to back up 2 mac. Both have about 70gs of stuff and I have a 1 tb drive. So that should be no problem. I have the time capsule already set-up wireless.
Do I have to make 2 folders? One for each computer? If so how do I do this.
    Any help would be great.
I just do want to have to do a restore and get all of my daughters stuff on my mac.
    Thanks

Just set them both up, via #Q1 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Time Machine will make a separate +sparse bundle disk image+ for each Mac's backups.
As noted, it will be much faster to do the initial setup and first backup while connected via Ethernet, if at all possible. So your best bet will be to set up one, and let it's first backup complete, before setting-up the second.

  • How to unify multiple iPhoto libraries from different Mac OS versions?

    I am pretty good with the Mac itself and have been a long time user. I knew full well acumulating multiple iphoto libraries in older backups (intead of building up on one) was not a great idea but for several reasons I have had to live that way. Now is the time to clean it all up once and for all and I need some wisdom;
-I got my external drive as my new iphoto library now. It's being used, there are already albums in it and it's ready to accept older libraries.
-What I want is that the older libraries (about 10 of them from different Mac OS versions) to show up in the new external drive as they looked in iphot back then. As albums in other words.
-I do not want them imported in a single folder that's full of photos.
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Cheers.
    M

If you imported a previous iphoto library into your new one, it created a folder inside the iphoto called "imported".
That was the problem. One should never import one library into another.  Only iPhoto 6 libraries and earlier can be imported into a library now.  With the introduction of iPhoto 7 the library was changed from a folder to a package which can't be imported by the current iPhoto version.
To use an older library with a new iPhoto version one just opens that library with iPhoto and lets iPhoto update it as necessary.  No importing necessary.
Also you can use the paid verson of  iPhoto Library Manager  to merge those additional libraries into your current working library (be sure to have a current backup of your current library before merging).  What will be included are albums, Events, keywords, titles, descriptions, places.  Books, slideshows, calendars in the other libraries will be copied over as just albums.

  • Opening database from other OS on Intel Mac

I can open a database created on Windows on my PPC Mac.
I can open a database created on a PPC Mac on Windows or Intel Linux
But I don't seem to be able to open a database created on a PPC Mac on an Intel Mac.
Is there a known bug about this ?
    Am I missing something ?
I've taken care of all endianness issues I'm aware of and it works between PPC OS X and Windows or Intel Linux.
    Thanks.
    Andi..

Ok, I made some progress but it still doesn't work. Here is what I learned:
    - Restoring my backups works as long as the original log file is there. I can only reuse the log file
if the endianness of both platforms are the same and I verified that this worked indeed.
    - When I don't copy the log file, I get the error reported earlier. The problem I reported earlier is not specific to Intel Mac OS X but specific to restoring database files without their log file.
I changed the code to call env->lsn_reset() on the db files as they are copied during a backup. Here are the steps that I take to make a backup:
    - create a destination dir
    - run env->txn_checkpoint() with DB_FORCE in the source dir
    - run env->log_archive(DB_ARCH_REMOVE) at which point I'm left with one log file only
    - each dbFile is copied by:
    + copy dbFile to dbFile.lsn
    + env->lsn_reset(dbFile.lsn)
    + move dbFile.lsn to destDir/dbFile
I'm now unable to even open these backed up database files later locally, on the same machine.
After restoring the files, the env is re-created with DB_RECOVER_FATAL | DB_CREATE, and that seems to work, but the db->open() statements on the restored db files fail.
    The errfile says this:
file unknown (meta pgno = 0) has LSN [3][2067729].
    end of log is [1][28]
./__repository__/__items.db: unexpected file type or format
I did verify that lsn_reset() did something on __items.db, the src file and dst files are different.
What am I missing now ?
    Thanks

  • When I try to open a document from my file on Mac OS X the following message appears, with the Bluetooth logo: 'SELECT A BLUETOOTH DEVICE ....Select a device to send file ...' I then have to go to the source of the document, e.g. Pages, to open the file.

When I try to open a document from my file on Mac OS X the following message appears, with the Bluetooth logo: 'SELECT A BLUETOOTH DEVICE ....Select a device to send file ...' I then have to go to the source of the document, (e.g. Pages), to open the file. Please could someone help?

The Get Info dialog should look something like this:
The "Change All" button should be at the bottom of the "Open With" section.  This is how it appears in Snow Leopard.  Other OSX versions many be slightly different.
If something is changing the setting back to something else you may have a deeper problem than I am able to help you with.  What is appearing in the Open with area before you correct it?
If the problem is still persisting, instead of double clicking on the file to open it, try right or control clicking and then select Open With and choose the proper app from the list.

  • Syncing iWeb on 2 different Macs

Is it possible to sync the data in iWeb across two different Macs?
I've created an elaborate website with it on my Macbook Air and want that data to sync on the Mac Pro. If there's a way to do it, I can't find it.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Login to your MobileMe account via....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Website-Music-Movies/JW-Video-Player.html
Click the iDisk icon to get to the folders. Click home and then select a folder - I use the Web folder. Click the upload arrow to upload a zip of your domain file.
If you have a paid MobileMe subscription, you can use Back to My Mac to connect to your other Mac computers over the Internet.
Using Back to My Mac you can access all of the computers you use with your MobileMe subscription. You can share files and use Screen Sharing to control the remote computer from anywhere you are connected to the Internet.
To use Back to My Mac:
On each computer you want to use with Back to My Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click MobileMe.
Make sure your MobileMe member name and password are entered correctly on the Account pane, and then click Sign In if necessary.
Click Back to My Mac, and then click Start if Back to My Mac isn’t already on.
If there are no sharing services turned on, click Open Sharing Preferences and select the services you want to use, such as File Sharing and Screen Sharing.
To display the computer in the sidebar of a Finder window, open Finder preferences, click Sidebar, and then select Back To My Mac in the Shared section.
To connect to your Back to My Mac enabled computers, click the disclosure triangle next to Shared in the left sidebar of a Finder window, click the computer you want to use, and then click Connect As or Share Screen.
Click Stop on the Back to My Mac pane of MobileMe preferences to stop using Back to My Mac.
Back to My Mac requires a router that supports NAT Port Mapping Protocol (NAT-PMP) or Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) in order to share services.

  • ICal and Office for Mac 2011 Sync Difficulties

I am having the continuing problem with calendar items syncing between my devices and my work calendar.
I start by listing the devices: iPad (1st version), iPhone 4 (not the Siri model), Macbook Pro, and syncing with a PC at the office.
Software involved: Updated mobile software for iPad and iPhone, Max OS X (version 10.7.2), iCal, Office 2011 for Mac and on the work PC Office 2011 with exchange.
Mail/Calendar Settings: work email (1) set up as an IMAP; work e-mail (2) set up as an exchange account (the work emails are different accounts not the same account configured differently, and (3) iCloud. The work e-mails are set up as shared accounts in Office 2011 for Mac and in iCal are shown for the correct settings via e-mail address for updating.
Problem: I make an appointment on my MacBook through iCal then expect it to go to Office 2011 on my Macbook and then update via exchange to the PC at office. Original problem was the dates would be incorrect, or the time would be incorrect (it would be off a day or a copule of hours), or it would keep the date and time correct but change the event title back to NEW EVENT as opposed to the event detail originally put in. I thought all of this would miraculously sync through iCloud but that has not happened (yes I checked to see if all the items were set up to iCloud on all devices). Failing to trust iCloud I attempted to simply sync through iTunes (both hard wired and wirelessly). I can most of the time get it from my Macbook to my devices (not counting the work PC) and from the devices to the Macbook, but now it will not update to the work PC once I get it into Office 2011 for Mac in order to exchange. It shows up on my calendar but not on the office PC, which in some instances will erase the data from the Macbook on exchange and not be anywhere.
I reviewed the settings and there must be something I am missing, but I am stuck. I have been fooling with it so long I think I have a myoptic view and cannot think of where to try next.
Desired Solution: I want to be able to make an appointment on any of my devices to include the Macbook and have them sync across all devices including exchanged with the office PC so I always have my calendar, my office has my calendar and all of them are up to date. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Pages and Numbers are part of Apple's iWorks suite and not Microsoft's Office Suite. If you paid for Pages and Numbers then you can redownload them from your purchases in the App Store. You can also reinstall Microsoft Office 2011 and reactivate with you serial number you received upon purchase.

  • Syncing my BB 8100 with my corporate Lotus Notes calendar and my personal iCal on my personal Mac

    Hi all,
Am new to the community and BlackBerry.
I have just tried to set up my BB to synch with my corporate Lotus Notes calendar, but also to synch with my personal iCal calendar on my Mac at home.
To do so I am using the corporate setup (which I change nothing to for LN syncing) and PocketMac SyncManager to synch with iCal when at home.
My BB calendar is always up-to-date with my office calendar but does not have my personal entries from iCal, even if the sync process with PocketMac SyncManager returned no errors and the log book shows that a number of entries where synced successfully.
I have been looking at this problems for several weeks now and am not getting anywhere.
Hope someone out there can help.

Hi!  One thing that BES users need to do when syncing with other computers is that they must turn OFF the BES function temporarily.  That means, open the Calendar, for example, and then open the menu, and find the BES Synchronization option.  Select that and change the setting to turn it off.  Repeat that for any BlackBerry device option that you want to sync with PocketMac.  Then, do your sync with the home Mac.  Afterward, before you resume syncing with the office system, turn that BES option back on for each area you turned it off.  At that point, you ought to see your personal contacts merging with your business ones.
    Have a great day!

junked old macbook for a new one. changed apple id password from a different mac. i want to login and it asks for name and password. no matter what i type i cant seem to login. why cant i just enter my apple id and password. or is there a way to change whatever name and password are on the new one from another mac so i can login. anything helps...thanks

Just open System Preferences>Users & Groups and unlock the preference pane with your root password.
Set the New Account to be an Administrator and fill in the rest of the data and then click "Create User".
I would suggest using this user to be YOU with admin capabilities. I wouldn't use the root user - too much damage could occur if you're not sure what you're doing. If you have files, etc., that you want to move to this account, simply but them in the Shared folder - or if you 'rescued' some old files and the like from your 'trashed' MBP, you can put them in your NEW admin account folders.
Hope I've explained myself well - call back with any questions!
