Opening Captivate 3 file

Greetings everyone:
I'm a new Captivate user (elearning developer) and I'm having
a problem with others (my boss) being able to open my Captivate
projects that I send to them for review. I've tried publishing as
flash and standalone, and it seems Windows will not allow the file
to be opened. Can anyone help a newbie with this simple snag?
Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron and welcome to our community
Here's a question to ponder. Once you have the files reviewed
and ready for others to view, how exactly are you planning to make
them available? My own guess here is that you will place them on
some sort of a server location, then provide a link to the user
that opens the file. Am I right?
Assuming I'm right, why not do the same thing for your boss?
Place the files on a server, then E-Mail your boss a link that
opens the Captivate output file. Keep in mind that you don't have
to actually post to a web server. You can also get by with placing
on a simple network drive. Then simply E-Mail your boss a link to
the .HTM file on the server.
Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Can not open Captivate files in Dreamweaver

All files are in one folder - code attached
    <p><a href="NAME.htm" target="_blank"
    class="paragraph" title="TITLE">LINK TEXT GOES
    HERE</a></p>
When the Captivate file was published, I selected the "Export
HTML" check box. I put both .swf files, the .cp file, and the .htm
file in the same folder. I can open the name_skin.swf file, but
it's just the skin. If I put the href file as the name.swf file, I
don't get the skin. If I use the name.htm file, I get a blank
    screen.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi divertida73
Looks like you may be neglecting to include a very important
    file. Its name?
    standard.js
Try adding that one to the mix and see if you don't fare
    better.

  • Can't open Captivate file!

Oh my gosh!  You won't believe it!  I made all kinds of cool changes, but now I can't open the file.  HELP! I have a back-up of the file, but not with the cool changes.  Here is the error I get when I try to open it:
Adobe Captivate could not open "the file name". Ensure that:
    - The file is not open already (it isn't)
    - The file is not damaged.  For example, if the file was an email attachment (it wasn't), ensure that you have decoded the file correctly.
    - The hard disk has sufficient available space. (probably does, it opened before)
    - The system has sufficient resources.  To optimize the resources, close all the other open applications (I have)
What now?  I'd hate to think that the last 8 hours of work has been wasted.  Thanks for any suggestions you might have.
    Terri

the last time you worked on it, did captivate exit the file strangely?  Crash?  End Task in the Task Manager (Windows)?
When Cp opens a project file it creates a hidden file that 'locks' the file so no one else can open it.  When you close the project, it removes the file.  The message you're describing can come up when that file doesn't get removed when Captivate closes.  It can also be all those scary things mentioned there.
If you go to the folder options you can 'show hidden files' and remove it manually IF that is really the problem.  Make sure you're not running two isntances of captivate and that no one else is working on the file (if it's in a network location) before doing anything.
That message can also come up when a file is created in say Cp 5.5 and you try to open it with Cp5.  They're not backwards compatible.

  • Cannot open captivate file

    Hi
Im trying to open a captviate version 5 file and im unable to do so . I'm seeing the following error.
"Adbobe captivate could not open filename ,Ensure that :
    - The file is not open already
    -The file is not damaged
-The hard disk has sufficient space
    - The system has sufficient resources."
I had previously installed captivate 5.5. I have un-installed 5.5 and have version 5 now. The files generated were from version 5  hence i don't see issues as to why it shud not open.
This file was created by another developer on captivate version 5 but when i try to open i see this issue.
Any ideas what could be the problem?
    Thanks
    Chetan

If this file was stored on a corporate LAN drive, check that there is no lock file for the project in the same drive.  That might be preventing you from being able to open it.
Was the other developer working on Captivate projects off his own PC hard drive or was the original CPTX file being accessed from a LAN?

  • How can I view captivate files emailed with translated text?

I cannot open captivate files with translated text. System states the file is not damaged. If file was an attachment make sure it was decoded correctly.

I think I was encountering the same issue.
I solved it installing Itunes 10.5.1(42), even if I'm not using Itunes at all.
Albumarts will now appear in every folder from the finder.
I closed my topic because I solved it :

Is it the same for you ?

  • Need to edit a Captivate file that won't open. Can the SWF be edited?

We are currently using Adobe eLearning Suite 2 (Cp5).
We have 2 older Captivate files (Cp 3 or 4) that will not open; they act like they're opening but eventually they just time out without the error message that you normally get with a corrupt file.
So all we have access to are the SWFs & zip files that were uploaded into our LMS.
We are switching to a different LMS and need to quickly make an edit to these files before they are uploaded to the new LMS.
Is it possible to edit the SWF (delete about 30 seconds of content off the end of each file) and still have them function as far as registering completion? And if so, what program would I need?

Sorry, but only Adobe can speculate as to why the older files refuse to open in the newer version. Phase of the moon? Jupiter aligning with Mars while the house of the Moon is in retrograde?
Personally, I'm going with the Mass Coronal Ejection theory!
Assuming there is really no interaction going on, you *MIGHT* be able to fudge things to get that last 30 seconds to go away by playing the SWF and using Captivate to record the SWF as it plays.

  • I am not able to open my file! Captivate 5

I don’t know who else to send this to right now, but I have been working on a project that is DUE.  I am not sure why, but I am not able to open the file.  Please help me are direct me to someone that can.
    Here's the error message received:
Adobe Captivate could not open, "file name" Ensure that:
    File is not open already
    File is not damaged
The hard disk has enough space
    Close all windows
I need this file open asap.
    And yes...I cleared the Cache

    Hello,
This is by design: I failed to explain well. The file exists as long as the file is open, sort of protection that it is not changed by someone else. It will disappear when you close the file. But the first error message at your originial question pointed perhaps to the fact that the file was not closed in a normal way, hence the lock file was perhaps still there. If you deleted the lock file you could have opened the file again, it was no longer protected. Hope my explanation is now a bit clear?

  • Captivate 3 - I can't open a file

    Hi,
i'd appreciate your help on this:
i'm trying to open a CP with a newly installed Captivate 3 on my workstation.
Everytime i open the file (either from its folder or from captivate itself) i get a message saying:
"document file and root already exists. Do you want to overwrite the file or save as a new file?"
Either option i choose i get the following message:
Adobe Captivate coudln't open "file name" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged..."
    Any ideas?
It's something i need for completing an important eLearning course..
    Thanks.

    Hi Mark
Silly question for you. The project you are attempting to
open in C4 isn't by chance still open in C3 is it?
I know there are issues adding a Captivate output to Robohelp
if the project is still open in Captivate which is what prompted me
    to ask.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Captivate file won't open

Has anyone ever had an issue where the Captivate file will
not open? In my case, the program generates the following error:
"Exception EParserError in module converter.dll at 0002B53E"
I've tried opening this projects on 2 different computers
using Captivate version 1 and 3. The error get's thrown in version
    1. In version 3, it just crashes as it tries to convert and re-save
the project in a new version.

    Hi there
    Seeking an answer isn't rude.
What we don't like to see is when someone pops into the forums and begins posting the same issue in many different places in the hopes of getting a fast answer. When this happens we end up having to delete the repeated threads so that the question is only asked in a single location. That way any answer will hopefully be provided in the same location and others that come looking later will actually find an answer.
Sometimes Captivate files become corrupt. The reasons a project may corrupt vary. But generally speaking, the following are some guidelines:
Projects may corrupt if working with them while they are stored on a network drive. Captivate likes it better when the project is on the local PC.
Projects may corrupt if they are too large. 50-65 slides should be considered your upper limit.
Projects may corrupt if your PC is struggling with sufficient resources. Close down as many applications as you can to free up resources.

  • Unable to open Captivate 4 file with Captivate 3

As the title suggests, I created a project in Captivate 4 and would to edit the project in Captivate 3. When I try to open it, I get the error message, "Adobe Captivate could not open "project.cp" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged..."
Are these files not backwards compatible, even from Captivate 4 to 3? Anything else I should consider?
(I created the project using a 64-bit version of Windows 7 , if that's a factor. I tried opening the file on another machine running Win XP, but got the same error.)

    Hi there
Unfortunately Captivate projects are only forward compatible. And even that will have limits.
Your best bet is to have both versions installed on the same PC. Then create a new, blank project in Captivate 3 that is sized identically to the one in 4. Then perform a copy/paste to move the content from 4 to 3.
Note that any buttons or click boxes will likely need re-linking and you cannot expect things that are "4 specific" to work in 3 any longer. (Widgets, Advanced Actions and the like)

  • Adobe Captivate could not open "the file" Ensure that:

Brand spanking new installation of the trail version of Captivate 5.5.
Try to open a file a client sent to me.
    Receive message
Adobe Captivate could not open "the file" Ensure that:
-The files is not open already
    - The file is not damanged.
-The hard disk has suffecient available space
    -The system has suffeicent resources.
Researched the blog and tried 2 suggestions:
    1. Clearing the cache. Did not work. I do not have a cache folder. I haven't created a Captivate 5.5 project. I'm just trying to open a file sent to me.
    2. Tried deleted bak file. Didn't work. Captivate 5 keeps recreating the file.
    Other facts:
Other people have been able to download the trial version and open the file.
I have Captivate 4 on my machine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I'm experiencing about the same problem:
I made a software demo using Macromedia Captivate on computer 1 en sent it by e-mail to computer 2.
On computer 2 I installed a Captivate 5.5 trial and I want to open the file in 5.5.
The file is not locked as far as I know (I right-clicked the file > properties > unlock)
I do have sufficiënt available space and resources. The file contains 135 slides but is not too large as I tried to do the same thing with a 50-slide file > same error message.
I tried creating a new blank project > I copied the slides into the blank project, saved again on a local drive, sent it to computer 2 again, but same error message.
    Please help, I'm getting desperate.

  • Captivate 4 will not open specific file

Recently got a new PC. The IT guy who got it set up for me transferred all of the files on my hard drive over to the new one. I then installed Captivate 4 on the new PC.
Now, I'm attempting to open one of the .cp files and it refuses to open. I see an indicator that the project is loading, but when the indicator fills, nothing happens. Captivate never actually opens the files. I am able to open other Captivate files on this drive, but of course this is the one I was in the midst of editing. I tried changing my .bak file to a .cp file, but same thing happens.
I moved the file to a network location and a colleague attempted to open the file and she had no difficulty. So...I think all of my data is still there; I just can't get it open.
    Any suggestions?

Captivate 4 was never approved for use with Windows 7, so it's not surprising you're having an issue.  I've known people (myself included) that were able to install and run Cp4 on a Win7 box, but others were unable to do the same.  I appears that not all Win7 installations are exactly the same and some allow Cp4 to work while others don't.
You can of course try using some of the compatibility settings in Win7 to get Cp4 to work.  Try the ones that allow apps designed for WinXp.  That's your best bet.
If none of this ends up working for you, your next best option is to upgrade to a later version of Captivate.  Be warned though that Captivate 7 does not open Cp4 files.  So if you have a lot of legacy content in .cp file format, you'll need to upgrade them all to CPTX format by opening them in either Cp5, 5.5, or 6, before migrating them to Cp7.

  • Error when trying to open Mac file with Captivate 6 Win

I've tried opening Captivate 6 files (.cptx/.cptl) that were created on the Mac version with Captivate 6 on Win7. Got the error message "can't open file" telling me to check the file and my resources. Resources are ok, the file was sent via email.
How can I set up a workflow for Captivate 6 between Mac and PC users that works? The discussion to Win files crashing Captivate Mac didn't help as there's no solution posted. Are there any issues concerning the compatibility of Mac and Win files within Captivate 6?
Any help is very much appreciated a we've got a deadline looming.

  • Opening Captivate 2 files in Captivate 4 causes error

    Hi all,
I have a colleague here at work who has been doing a lot of work on some captivate files using captivate 2. All was going well until he had a hard drive crash, now to finish the files he is using the trail of captivate 4, after which a licence may be purchased. but for some reason 2 of his projects wont open in CP4.
Most of the time he will open a CP2 file in CP4 and it will ask him to re-save it, I suppose for compatability purposes. But on 2 of these projects it fails and they wont open at all.
I am able to open 1 of the files on my CP2 installation, and I tried to re-save it but still no luck.
I'm just wondering if there is anyway to repair the projects, or if CP2 files have problems going to CP4? perhaps they were damaged when his hard drive crashed.
The next thing he is going to try to install CP3 and see if the CP2 files will open then, otherwise he has a lot of work to do again.
    Thanks for any help.

Is there no possibility to copy and paste from the old to the new version, which means you need a machine with the two versions installed (they coexist happily together)?
