Opening Catalog Backup after computer failure

Hi Folks
I'm obviously a dunce..
I back my images and catalog up on a second internal drive and two external drives...
I recently suffered a complete PC failure which resulted in the boot drive(C:) needing to be replaced and all software reinstalled..
I am using LR v2.6 and thought that I could open LR and go to'
FILE / Open Catalog... / and then select the second internal drive which has all files intact and open the catalog...
But when I select the required catalog I get the message;
"Relaunch Lightroom with this Catalog?
In order to use this catalog Lightroom must close the current catalog and restart. Do you want to relaunch Lightroom with E:\Users\Justinted\Pictures\CatBackup\2010-01-08 0950\Lightroom 2 Catalog.Ircat? "
I then click 'Relaunch' but LR just closes down and does nothing???
What am I doing wrong folks?
Cheers
Just

Thanks for the quick response...
That didn't work either but for some strange reason copying the entire contents to a different drive allowed me to open the catalog...
But now all the images are 'offline or missing'...how do I get LR to find the images?
Apologies if this really simple...

  • Restoring iTunes after computer failure.

    Hi,
I am just setting up my new Windows 7 PC after the complete failure of my old XP PC.
I have a decent set of backups (but not an iTunes specific backup) and I have basically set up my data as it was on the old PC (same driveletters etc). I have loaded iTunes and it seems to be working OK - apart from the fact that it is empty.
I think that all I need to do is to copy the old My Music info (iTunes + extra library info) into the Music library and I should be back where I started. As a precaution, I would obviously save a copy of what is there currently.
    Please advise.
It would also be helpful if you could suggest a more iTunes specific backup strategy additional to what I already do.
    Thanks.

    sorryociffer,
The backup you see taking place only copies certain information, and in general shouldn't be considered a primary back up of data.
iPhone and iPod touch: About backups
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
To back up the iPhone data, sync the iPhone data to other programs on your computer (following article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386 ) and then back up all of the data on the computer to a dedicated back up device, like an external hard disk drive for example.
This article here provides basic information on creating data backups: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
The message you're encountering is expected behavior. An iPhone and an iPod are only meant to be synced with one iTunes library at a time: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1209
In this case, Apple does give you the ability to copy over iTunes Store purchases to an authorized computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Beyond that, there are other non-Apple programs that claim to give you the ability to copy all of your music, and possibly other data from your iPhone to your computer. It's pretty easy to find one when using an online search engine, like Google, Yahoo, or AOL.
    Hope this helps,
    Raleigh

  • Restore Time Machine Full Backup After Catastrophic Failure

I am new to the Mac and using Time Machine as my primary backup utility. My concern is the way it creates one full backup at the beginning and only incremental ones after that. If the full backup gets overwritten due to the program needing hard drive space, does it know to create another full backup, even if it needs to delete some older incremental backups?
I am concerned I will need to complete a full restore at some point, and will not be able to do so because there will not be a full backup present on the Time Machine disk.
Also, who has had to restore from a catastrophic disk failure using an external time machine disk? Is this easy? Does it work properly?

you concerns are unfounded. due to the way TM keeps data organized every backup is full and independent of any other backups.
when TM makes a backup it only backs up afresh new and changed files. everything else is _*hard linked*_ to existing backup copies.
deleting an earlier backup to save space as TM does sometimes has zero effect on the remaining backups. they remain full and complete. doing a full system restore from TM is very easy. you boot from the SL install DVD and select "restore system from backup" from Utilities menu.
However, it should be noted that TM is still very buggy and doing a full restore can not be tested until you actually do it. therefore, it's advisable to have a double backup using a different backup tool. bootable clones are the best for doing a full restore. CCCloner and Superduper are excellent cloning backup programs.

  • Unable to complete catalog backup after first DVD burned successfully

I am running elements 11 on Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center.
The first DVD of the backup is completed successfully. When I insert the 2nd DVD I get this message:
"An error occurred while writing the disc. It is recommended that you contact your disc drive manufacturer and upgrade tot he latest available firmware."
I checked all programs and hardware for updates. I tried the backup 3 times and used new Fiji discs each time, but got the same results and same message each time.

You don't have an RMAN issue.
    You have a listener issue.
    Fix your listener.
As part of the upgrade(s) you need to account for the listener. Go back and finish that part of the upgrade.

  • Trouble opening Microsoft Office after computer transfer

I just got a MacBook Air and transferred all my data from my old Macbook Pro last week.  My microsoft office will not open.  It opens the M.O. set-up assistant and I run through the steps and check for new updates, install the updates, and then it doesn't open the program.  I try to click on the program again, and it runs me through the set-up assistant and updates everytime.

I repaired disk permissions and it didn't fix the problem.  I still had to run through the set-up assistant and it didn't open.  I looked at my sharing and permissions for admin (me) and it says "read and write."  I'm assuming this is correct.  Also, it is microsoft office 2008...is this an issue?  I read some posts where it might be?

  • After Lightroom 5.6 catalog backup, cannot open Lightroom (hour glass appears for a few seconds, then nothing happens)

Cannot open Lightroom 5.6 after catalog backup (hour glass appears, then nothing happens)

I found the solution to this from these thread Re: Photoshop CC opens and then closes immediately. What gives? and Re: Photoshop CC Crashes/Closes within seconds of startup
I did it and it works for me So, I think I should share this so people who have faced the same issue as I can give it a try.
Basically, Just uninstall the Photoshop and Creative Cloud, then rename the folder SLCache to SLCache_old. Restart your computer once and then re-install everything again. (CC and PS)
    It should work.
    Thanks

Open Pictures folder and move the files named lrcat-journal and lrcat.lock to Desktop.
Make sure that , they are not inside Pictures folder any more and try to open backup from Lighrtroom and check..
Any LRcat file with .lock extension , move it to Desktop.

  • Problem opening after crash - "compatible catalogs on your computer"?

I am using 2.3 and just had a few crashes. After the last crash, when I try to launch, I get the message,
"Lightroom 2 has found compatible catalogs on your computer. Would you like to upgrade an existing catalog or open Lightroom with a new catalog?"
I don't see any guidance as to how to bring up my existing catalog. I do see a file I've not noticed before, Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat-journal, in my catalog folder, and a Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat.lock file. Do I need perhaps to reboot my WinXP Pro system? Thanks.
    Dilip

I just tried double clicking on the catalog file itself and think things are working okay now, though I got a message that I dismissed and restarted LR - asking if I want automatic updates turned on or something, as if it were a fresh install. How can I verify that all is robust? Thanks.

  • Got a new computer Loaded LR  Copied back up from old computer and placed in LR folder in Pictures Open LR and opened catalog In Library all sub folders and pictures are listed  However all pictures are only Gray no pic

Bought a New computer loaded  -  LR application--  appears to loaded ok.  Copied Backup from old computer Wanted to have pics on new computer   Saved Backup to LR folder in Pictures   When opening Catalog  all sub files and corresponding number of pictures are correct However all pictures are blank with gray color.  Need to understand what I have done wrong.

    Sam,
Sorry, wasn't to clear on my description (and wrong terminology)
The old computer was an OSX machine running iPhoto and I had a library of photos as well as a series of albums associated with that library.
The new computer, also an OSX machine running iPhoto, copied over the library from the old machine using the "migrate" utility. I didn't run it on the first time I ran the machine, but I ran it after I had been using the new machine for a couple of days.
What I can see on the new machine is all the folders in the Photo folder in the User folder have been copied over into the iPhoto folder. All the jpg files appear to be there.
When I open iPhoto on the new machine, it opens right away, and on the left side I can see the albums have all been imported but they are all empty. The library is also empty.
Not sure what I can do to keep my album organization.
I guess I have the option to add to library and just copy all the jpg files into the new machine, but doing this gets everything into the new library, but doesn't import any of the albums.

  • Lightroom crashed and now I can't open the catalog - even after deleting the lock file.

Lightrooms crashed, which is a common occurrance. But, this last time was different. After I restarted it my catalog was not linked and all my settings were gone. I tried opening the catalog through the file menu, but absolutely nothing happens. I tried going to the folder and clicking on it but this only opens lightroom with no catalog. After having scanned this forum I found that I need to delete the .lock file, but after doing that the same things happen. Any suggestions on how to open my catalog? Will reinstalling Lightroom help?

The problems mostly happen when I am using X-Y compare in Library mode. It shows black rectancles over the tops of the sections that contain the photos and these flash. They aren't always the same size, but are only on the top of the section - never big enough to completely cover the photos. Then I get anywhere from one to about four or five extra windows stacked on top of the Lightroom Icon at the bottom of my screen (I use Windows 8) opening and closing, though there isn't enough time for me to click on them and read them because my computer gets so slow that my mouse actin is delayed by a few seconds. And, to shut Lightroom down, I need to use Windows task manager because clicking on the little red box with the X in the upper right corner accomplishes nothing. I have a new Sony Vaio i5 chip and 8Gb RAM. This also hapened on my old computer, though not as often

  • Time machine can't open backups after installing Mavericks

When upgrading to Mavericks the installation failed with a disk error. In the shop they formated the disk and re-installed 10.6.8. It appear that there was nothing wrong with the disk anyway.
Of course formatting caused me to loose all data, but I had made a new Timemachine backup before the installation.
Getting the computer back with old OS and empty I called to ask which should be the order of the following:
    1. Upgrade to Mavericks
    2. Restore my data from Timemachine
Advice was the above so this morning I upgraded successfully to Mavericks. However when I would like restore data (after a few issues making the Mac see the external backup disk) it appears thet Timemachine cannot open the backups older than this morning. It can see then on the right side of the screen, though. Can anyone tell me how to access these backups made under 10.6.8, please.
Another challenge will be that iPhoto does not seem to exist anymore. So if the Timemachine backup gets to work, to where would I restore photos?
    Kind regards
    Morten

Explanation is that Time Machine created a "new" backup when backup disk was first time connected after migration to Mavericks. This backup was obviously empty, i.e. only containing Mavericks but no user data. Consequently Migration assistant would find no data to migrate.
Solution was to go to Backups.backupdb on the external disk (in Finder)  and manually delete the backups created after the migration to Mavericks. Now the Migration assistant saw the backup I created just before the initial failed migration to Mavericks and could succesfully migrate all my data.
I guess you should be VERY careful with what you do manually on the backup disk, but I was out of options and the advice from the local shop worked.

  • Iblck release after computer crash or network failure

We are controlling equipment using ENET/1000 devices. The controlling computer has a redundant computer in case the primary fails. We use iblck to protect the bus when the equipment is under active control and need to restore service quickly if the computer fails. We have confirmed that the ENET/1000 does retain the lock after a failure however have not tested the duration of the timeout. How long does an ENET/1000 maintain a lock after it looses connection to the requesting thread and can this timeout be managed in any way?

Error handling won't work in this case, unless there is something I missed in the documentation. Only the process/thread that issued the IBLCK to an ENET/1000 can release it. If the computer that crashes is the one that issued the IBLCK, then there is no error handling that can be done.
Note we simulated the computer hard crashing by shutting down the network interface which effectively silently severs the connection to the ENET/1000 from that computer.
When we start the application up on the backup computer we cannot start utilizing the ENET/1000 bus until the ENET releases the previous lock from the crashed computer. According to the NI 488.2 driver manual, only the thread issueing the IBLCK can release it. Since that computer effectively hard crashed, there is no way to clear the IBLCK from a command since that thread is gone. I see no error handling that can capture this. We appear to be at the mercy of the ENET/1000 to release the lock. So we are looking to understand if that timeout is consistent, what the duration is, and is there any way to modify the timeout?
    Thanks for your response,
    Tom

  • HT2506 After updating my system to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 I can no longer view videos on Facebook or other sites. The only one I can view videos on is youtube. I have downloaded Adobe Flash player and still no luck. I cannot even open Preview on my computer

After updating my system to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 I can no longer view videos on Facebook or other sites. The only one I can view videos on is youtube. I have downloaded Adobe Flash player and still no luck. I cannot even open Preview on my computer anymore. Any ideas would be helpful thanks

Merely clicking the Preview icon in the Dock doesn't cause it to open anything, unless you had one or more windows open the last time it quit.
If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test.
    1. If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, triple-click the line below to select it:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder should open. If there is more than one item in the folder with the words "Flash Player" (not "flashplayer") in the name, open the respective Info windows, check the version numbers, and delete all except the latest. You may be prompted for your login password. If you get the same error after doing that, re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from this page:
Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player
Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
    2. If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked Enable plug-ins.
    3. Select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.
    4. In the Safari preference window, select
Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    Close the window. Then select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.

  • After having the logic board replaced, Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the same backup files as before.

After having the logic board replaced due to bad NVidia chip, my Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the current backup. Is there a way to reset something to get Time Machine to continue to use the same backup files as before for this laptop?

As far as TM is concerned you have a new computer, so it will make a new backup. If you don't have the space for both backups then erase your backup drive before backing up the computer.
