Opening certain contexts On start up

Whenever I start Skype I do have it to automatically start on boot up, my question is whenever Skype starts up I have the View > Compact Sidebar View and I want to have it open a couple of my contacts so their window will be open. Is that possible with commandline, thanks Howard

PS Sorry, Pre-Tiger procedure was a bit different:
1. Log in to Mac OS X as the user who wishes to have a login item.
2. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
3. Choose Login Items from the View menu.
4. Click Add.
5. Select an application or document in the dialog box that appears.
6. Click Add.

  • I don't want to open certain tabs when starting FF

I'm using a PC in a different environment and when I start FF 6.0 a couple of Tabs open that I no longer need. How do I stop FF from opening those Tabs?
    Thanks,

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Safari has stopped opening certain webpages and says can't connect to server... This started 3 months ago with FB and now randomly with another site... all other sites are fine.. Help?
I've tried resetting safari, deleting all webpage data and setting time/date to automatic, but no such luck.
The message that comes up is: "Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server 'Facebook' "
I'd be genuinely impressed if anyone were to actually work out what was wrong.

    Hi ..
Might be a cookies, cache, or extensions issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:  Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

Problem with Arabic font: In certain contexts, when writing Arabic with vowel signs (fatha, damma, kasra, sukun) a sequence of sukun + fatha/damma etc. would reverse automatically. Is this a known bug?
    Example: عَيْنٌ
    would automatically convert to عَيُنْ
Funnily, it doesn't seem to happen here, but it does when entering text in a web interface (using Firefox, font Bayan) and when using Text Edit.
Seems to be a problem of a specific font, as e.g. Arial MS Unicode works fine. Any hints?
    Thank you!

You can't do Arabic on MS Word for Mac.  This app has never supported RTL scripts, so you need to use something else.  Mellel is best, but Pages 5, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, Open/LibreOffice should work OK.
You switch between languages by using the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen or by using the keyboard shortcuts apple/command plus space.  Go to system prefs/keyboard/shortcuts to make sure that is activated.
To see which key does what, you use Keyboard  Viewer.

You place vowels on letters by typing the key for the vowel after the key for the letter.  The vowels are on the option/alt keys, option/alt + a gives you َ

  • FM hangs on opening certain files

Using FM8.0p277 on Windows XP SP3
I'm currently encountering problems with my installation of FM8.0p277 on Windows XP SP3. These are the symptoms:
When I try to open certain existing FM documents (both structured and unstructed), the Windows hourglass appears, the framemaker.exe process has 50% CPU load (one of two CPU cores), and stays like this for tens of minutes until I kill the process.
I've worked on the same files before without any problems.
No difference if I shut down and restart the PC.
A friend at another company can open the same files using his FM8 installation.
I can however create new documents, save and reopen them. This tells me a fresh installation of FM probably won't be sufficient (but I'll try that later, if necessary).
This is how I guess the problem started: I tried to open an XML file that had been modified outside FM for testing purposes. Either FM did hang or took very long to open the file, anyway, I killed the framemaker.exe process.
What is particularly strange: I quit FM and cleared the temporary folders (both windows\temp and the one in my user profile). Immediately after starting FM again, I looked at the contents of one of the FRM*.tmp files and recognized some text content, which must be either from the XML file on which I killed the application, or from one of my other documents.
The last two observation would indicate there is temporary or cached data in a different place than in the Windows and User temp folders (I've already cleared up both of them while FM was not running).
Do you know where to look? Any other suggestions, maybe?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Johannes

Thanks to anyone who might have considered an answer. Luckily I found the cause and resolved the error. Naturally it was something I didn't think of at first.
(To get even more verbose: FM had been running for a few days already. In the meantime I had copied an obviously corrupted .acf color catalog file into the fminit\color directory, and these color definitions were relevant only to my existing documents. After killing FM because of the XML file that simply took very long to open, it was the first time that color catalog had been in effect.)

  • "application cannot be found" when trying to open certain files

Recently i upgraded my computer to Mavericks recently and I've been having a problem opening certain files.  In one day I upgraded to Mavericks and I also updated my Adobe programs to the Creative Cloud.  Ever since then I cannot open any of my Adobe files.  They are all saved as under the CS4 legacy format.  I uninstalled CS4 after installing the Creative Cloud.  Every time I try to open one of these files previously created in CS4, whether it is a photoshop ot illustrator file, I get the error message "The application cannot be found".  I also can see no preview or thumbnails for the files.  I talked to Adobe Support and we went through a process of deleting my preferences and it didn't work.  I restarted my machine and it worked.  It worked for a day and now after starting up my machine today it is saying the same thing again.  After a while it just out of nowhere started working again.  I'll be clear and say that I was logged into my adobe account and there were no network interuptions.
By the way, the new versions (Creative Cloud) of the adobe programs all work just fine and If I save something then it works fine.  It is only when trying to read a file from a previous format.

If you are attempting to start Adobe Creative Cloud by opening a file created by its previous version, open the Adobe Creative Cloud app first, then choose Open from its File menu and select the old file. The files you are attempting to open were associated with the version you used to create them, which is now gone.
After opening them, save them again. From then on, opening them will probably open Adobe CC directly.

  • TB (currently v31.1.2) does not open certain attachments (e.g. jpg, pdf) properly.

I've been having trouble opening certain attachments, notably .pdf and .jpg. Example: today I wanted to open a .jpg attachment. I right-click on the attachment and select Open. I get about one-third of the picture okay and the rest is just a muddy grey colour. For both pdfs and jpgs the file also shows in the body of the message as a collection of weird characters at the end of the message underneath the name of the file.
[As an aside, I deal with this jpg problem by using my iPhone, opening the image, pasting it into the BODY of a new message, sending that message to my email address, opening that email in TB and then copy & paste to where I want it. I haven't yet found a way around the PDF problem except by opening and reading on my phone.]
From the support pages I'm guessing this is a problem associated with mimeTypes but that is a step too far for me :) I go to Tools>Options>Attachments but just see a box that shows me two tabs (Incoming and Outgoing). Under incoming, none of the entries mention .pdf or .jpg and there is no mechanism to add such an entry even if I knew what I was doing.
Any help/thoughts would be appreciated (running Windows 7 64 bit)

Thanks for this Matt and Toad Hall. It makes sense to me. I had to install a firewall on my machine (long story ... to do with a game I play and a new VOIP router) and later, but around the same time, installed an update from TB. It was after the update that the trouble started so I assumed it was a TB issue.
But although I can't check this, it is quite possible that I didn't receive any emails with PDF or JPG attachments between the time I installed the firewall and later installed the TB update and thus the problem caused by the firewall didn't show until after the update.
The firewall is part of the Outpost suite from Agnitum (recommended by my ISP) so it all seems to tie in with what you have said.
I have now attended to the issue with the firewall and it all seems to be okay.
    Many thanks

  • Premiere Pro CS 5.5 crashes when opening certain projects. Others work.

    Hey,
when opening two certain project PP starts to load but when the progress bar is full the program crashes with an error saying Premiere Pro doesn't work anymore.
Other projects can be opened like normal. I can also create a new project and premiere works.
Is there a problem with the project file? Can they be faulty? But I didn't change them for a few months. I also tried to open backupfiles of that project but it is the same problem. What else can be wrong?
The project is very complex, might this cause any problem? Or sth. in the cache, preview files?
Hopefully someone can help me out.
    Regards,
    Tui

That would certainly indicate that your "bad" projects are completely corrupt
When you create new projects (sorry, I don't have any other suggestion) you might also start a new work habit
At least every day, or after every "major" project step, do a SAVE AS to save a new project
    Something like...
    JoeVideo01
    JoeVideo02
    JoeVideo03
and so on... so if JoeVideo03 is somehow corrupted, you may go back to JoeVideo02 AND all of the auto-saves for that name to try and find a project that is from before the corruption happened

  • Making an application the default program to open certain files

    Hello,
I have a stupid question that has been bugging me for a long time.
I have installed parallels to use windows and when i used its office excel, it prompted me if I want to open the files with window's excel; which I did. Then now everytime I open an excel file on my mac HD, it starts parallels to launch its excel to open. I tried the option of open with "other" and select my mac's excel but this only applies on the particular file. I uninstalled parallels to avoid this problem and it still tries to locate parallel's excel which no longer exists.
So I have everytime to select the file and use the open with option which is very unpractical.
This applies for any other application so is there an effective way to change the "default" application that opens certain files? There must be a way to do that!!!!
    Please help.

    Hi Carol,
    Do the following:
    1. Click once on any Excel file.
    2. From the menubar select File->Get Info
    3. In the "Open with" section click on the drop down menu and select the Microsoft Excel, ensuring it's the Apple Mac version that's located in your Applications folder. If it's not listed, select "other" and then navigate to the application.
    4. Click on the "Change All" button and confirm.
That's it. Everytime you double click on that file type, it will open in the Application of your choice.

  • Color calibration change when opening certain apps in OSX 10.8?

    Hey guys.
I've noticed something weird when opening certain applications in Mountain Lion. For one thing, whenever I open say Final Cut X, the entire color gamut changes on my display. It doesn't look bad or anything. It's almost like the computer is changing color calibrations... like when you used to be able to select Adobe RGB in the display preferences in OSX 10.6. Anyone know if this is an intentional thing when using pro applications? Because I also notice it when I open up iPhoto and when I start "screen recording" in Quicktime.

    15" MacBook Pro (early 2012)
    2.2GHz Intel i7, 8GB RAM

I recently started noticing the same issue after upgrading to Moutain Lion. The screen will change from a warm tone to a cooler bluish tone. I think it has to be a bug, as I've had the MBP for over a year running Snow Leopard and never noticed this. I hope there is a fix on the way as this is no good for editing photos and graphic work.

  • Why am I having trouble running Adobe Flash Player 11 on my 2011 Macbook Air? I've downloaded and installed it repeatedly; yet when I try to open certain images online or play certain Youtube segments, I get the message, "You must have Adobe Flash 11..."

Why am I having trouble running Adobe Flash Player 11 on my 2011 Macbook Air? I've downloaded and installed it repeatedly; yet when I try to open certain images online or play certain Youtube segments, I get the message, "You must have Adobe Flash 11..."  My computer tells me it is installed and running.

If you're sure you've installed the latest version of Flash, take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test. For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 5.
    1. If you're only having trouble with YouTube videos, sign in to your YouTube account and load this page. You may see a link with the text "Leave the HTML5 Trial." If so, click that link.
    2. If you're getting a "blocked plug-in" error, then from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Check Now. Quit and relaunch your browser.
    3. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Right-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder should open. Delete the following item, or anything with a similar name, if present:
    Flash Player (failing).plugin
You may be prompted for your login password.
    4. Re-download and reinstall Flash. Download it from this page:
Adobe - Install Adobe Flash Player
Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.
    5. If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked Enable plug-ins.
    6. Select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them.
    7. In the Safari preference window, select
Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    Close the window. Then select
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced
and click Delete All. Close the preference pane.

  • Unresponsive Mac when opening certain files

Hi, this is my first time using these forums as I've never had a problem with my macbook pro until yesterday. I'm not tech savy but fortunantely I haven't had too many problems with my MBP. However, beggining yesterday I've had a very unresponsive computer. The problem only occcurs when I open certain types of apps.
Google chrome (which i am using now) is perfectly fine, photobooth, even imovie is working fine and not making the computer unresponsive. However, when I try to open safari/software update/firefox/skype the computer always (100% of the time) will have a long stream of unresponsive time, followed by a small time frame where the computer catches up to any commands I pushed (force quit option), which is than followed by another stream of unresponsive time. I've had the activity monitor out while I tried opening safari or software update and it will show an 8% usage. Nothing remarkably high. however the programs will be highlighted in red with the words unresponsive and it will occasionaly make the other programs (like google chrome or finder) unresponsive.
I know that Imovie is a very heavy taxload program for the MBP but if i can use that smoothly, I think it's safe to say my MBP is not too "slow".
The only thing in common I see between the programs that provoke an unresponsive computers is that they use the internet (safari/software update/skype/itunes will log onto the store). Whats peculiar is that google chrome is working great.
Does google chrome connect to the net in a different way? does anyone know what tests i should do to figure whats wrong with my mbp?
    heres my mbp details

  • Macbook not opening certain programs and running others slowly.

My macbook has recently started not opening certain programs on my computer, such as garageband and iweb and others shut down randomly in the middle of using them. I also can't access the other account on my computer. I downloaded virus protection and ran that, but my computer is still not working right! What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Start with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/multipleappsquit.html The Tiger stuff should be applicable.

  • FCP won't open certain projects

When I attempt to open certain projects FCP won't open. It starts up then before it opens it shuts down. I'm able to open and work in other projects and sequences.
When I was able to open and work on this particular sequence it seems to shut down when I edited, moved or rendered a still image (jpeg and pdf). I'm wondering if these are corrupt and if so how do I "uncorrupt" them.
I've already trashed preferences a number of times.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well thank you all for your help - but as many of you guessed, it was a PEBKAC issue - namely me!
I was so sure that the versions of FCP were the same, I neglected to look at the 2 relevant "about" pages. Although both FCP's came from the same disk, the one on the lap-top had up-graded itself. Once I upgraded the desk-top to match, everything was rosy.
    Once again, many thanks.
    I retire, red-faced!

  • Safari won't open certain websites

I am sorry if this already has a thread but I couldn't find it. My question is whether anyone can give me some advice about how to get over the problem of safari not opening certain websites. I have followed Apple's suggestion's to add "index/html" following the address but it does not work. They also suggest to contact each websites adminstrator which I don't have the time as there are a number of websites in which I have encountered this problem. Also, it seems to be a deficiency of the Safari rather than the other websites. How do I get over this obestacle? TX!

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I just experienced something very strange.
First of all, I installed Leopard 36 hours ago, and except for a small email issue, it's been great. Until this...
I was on my own website, when it suddenly said it couldn't open my page because it couldn't find the server. I checked with my host, and everything was fine. I tried going there with an old version of IE, and I got right on. Tried again with Safari, and no dice. I studied the addresses to see if anything was different, and noticed that in IE, there was no "www." in the address. So, I deleted the www from the address in Safari, and it found the website. However, all the images were X's because their address starts with a www.
This lasted about 10 minutes, and then everything was fine. During that time, other websites seemed to work fine.
My head is starting to hurt again.
