Opening Clarisworks in Appleworks

Will the current version of AppleWorks running on OS X open spreadsheets created in ClarisWorks 2.1?

AppleWorks 6.2.9 may or may not be able to open ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It's very inconsistent & there is no way to predict which ones will open & which ones will give an I/O error. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 can open them including the Classic component of 6.2.9, 6.2.8. I keep AppleWorks 5 on my G5 to run in Classic to open & save the problem files as AppleWorks 5 which AppleWorks 6.2.9 can open.
I wrote a user tip, "Force" AppleWorks 6 to open in Classic, for just such a situation. Just make sure you don't have AppleWorks running in both OS X & Classic at the same time. They will run, but you can get odd errors when saving files.

  • How to open transferred IIgs appleworks files on Mac?

My cousin has many years of Appleworks files authored on a IIgs that she needs to bring into Appleworks on the Mac.
We can get them to the Mac, but cannot open them in Appleworks on the Mac.
    All suggestions are appreciated!
    TIA

OK. When Keith posts back we'll go from there. I'll do a little more "digging" & see if I can find what I wrote before. I'm sure I saved it. I'm hanging on to at least one older Mac with System 7-something & a functioning floppy drive to move files back & forth.
I found it. It's from February/March of last year.
The biggest problem is getting the files from the Apple IIgs to the Mac. I'm not sure that OS 9 is able to read ProDOS disks. I think (but I'm not positive) the last was OS 8.1. If you do have access to a 3.5" drive for the Apple II, you can transfer the files. The problem is that Apple II disks are 800K (double-density, not high-density) disks. There were HD 3.5" drives made for the Apple IIgs, but very few users had them & they required GSOS 6. None of the USB floppy drives available can read these older disks. If you have access to an older Mac or can e-mail the files from the IIgs, this will solve that part of the problem. An elementary school might be able to help you. Or, perhaps, one of the few Apple II User Groups still in existence.
Although both programs are named AppleWorks they are not the same. AppleWorks 6 for the Mac does not have translators for classic AppleWorks or AppleWorks GS for the Apple II. Earlier versions of ClarisWorks & AppleWorks 5 for the Mac do have translators for classic AppleWorks word processing, spreadsheets & databases as well as AWGS word processing. To transfer AWGS spreadsheet or database files, the best option is to save them as ASCII text (SS or DB), SLYK (SS) or DBF (DB) on the IIgs before transferring them to the Mac. It is also possible that MacLink Plus by DataViz has the translators.
For inexpensive options to buy AppleWorks 5 or ClarisWorks 5, try eBay and do a search for "Clarisworks", "Claris Works" or "AppleWorks" (some people put a "space" in the name). However, AppleWorks 6.2.9 cannot open a lot of ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files.

  • How to open ClarisWorks 1 drawing files?

I have som dokumentation as ClarisWorks 1 drawings. How do I open thise files?
    Have AppleWorks 6.2.9.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The first thing to try is adding the .cwk extension to the file name. I have found that AppleWorks 6 doesn't always recognize really old ClarisWorks files without it. There is a known problem with AppleWorks 6.2.9 & opening ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. They will often return an I/O error so even adding the .cwk extension may not work.
You could send me two or three of these files & I'll experiment & let you know what I find is the best way for you to convert the rest. Click my name in blue next to this post. My public e-mail address is in the biography section. Just replace (AT) with @.

    Hello
Maybe it's the bad old "Recent Items anomaly".
    Look at the folder
    bootVolume+:Users:+yourAccount:Documents:AppleWorks User Data:Starting Points:Recent Items:
and clean it from old aliases if as I assumes, it is heavily loaded.

Rosetta is not included Lion, if you are not familiar with Rosetta it was an application included in Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard that allowed PPC based apps to run on Intel based machines. That was over 5 years ago so it's time to move on. As has been suggested you can read those documents in Pages which is available on the App Store. Pages is part of the iWorks suite that replaced AppleWorks years ago. Currently iWorks is on iWorks 09 , and includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote. You can find each on the App store.

  • How do I open my old Appleworks documents which have turned into Unix Executable Files?  I would like to convert them into Pages documents.

How do I open my old Appleworks documents which have turned into Unix Executable Files?  I would like to convert them into Pages documents.  I also have old Word Perfect documents which have become similarly unopenable.

Best bet might be to try opening them using LibreOffice [free] and save them to .doc.
Do you really want to save them as .pages files? You are jumping from the frypan into the fire. Yet another proprietary format that Apple has again deadended with no working translation.

Yvan has got AppleWorks working under emulation:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15918064#15918064
    As to iWork:
Word Processing documents can be opened directly only in Pages.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first. Nothing will import AppleWorks databases: the only way to deal with them is to export them to ASCII text (of course you need AW running to be able to do this) and open them in a database program - the best choices are Bento for very simple databases or FileMaker Pro - please see these pages:

If you want to downgrade back to Snow Leopard, please see Kappy's post here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15764708#15764746
Please particularly note his warning that the process will erase your hard disk and you must make a backup first (not in Time Machine using Lion).

  • Can't open ClarisWorks floppies on PC

Hi. I have some original ClarisWorks 1.0 floppies. I was wanting to burn them to a CD. So, I tried opening them on a PC using TransMac and MacDrive. No dice. I just get a message saying the floppies are not formatted; however, they were used to install ClarisWorks on an older LC II many years ago without any problems. Unfortunately, I no longer have a Mac with a floppy drive. Is there any way I can read these floppies on a PC? Is this something I could get done at Kinko's perhaps? Thanks for any help.

As my list of models shows, I have kept AT LEAST one working set of hardware for every model of Apple "pc" I have ever owned, for the specific reason that every once-in-a-while one of my late father's clients hits me up for precisely the problem of data recovery.
With that in mind, depending on what size metropolitan area you live in, you MIGHT be able to find someone who does data recovery work for primarily banks, tax accountants, law firms and the like, who are constantly having clients bring them their parents and grandparents real estate and financial records in program formats and disk formats which the manufacturer's have made deliberately obsolete in the name of "bigger and better" (Bronx Cheer Loudly), who will not charge you an arm and a leg to convert a few disks from 3.5" 400/800K to 1.4MB for the USB micro-floppy disk drive of your choice.
One of my high school class mates had a small one-man company that did that with old film movies to VHS tape conversion, you might even try looking for one of those companies who has taken the next step to DVD conversion and has the old hardware around also.
BY THE WAY. I have managed to keep in my "stash" complete "licensed" and boxed copies of the ORIGINAL Appleworks 1.0 and Clarisworks up through version 3. UP UNTIL I "upgraded" to MacOSX.4.6 on my Powerbook Clarisworks 3 worked flawlessly in Classic, I am finding that a LOT of various "things" are now problematic and have purchased a used G4 tower to maintain a copy of MacOSX.2.8 on it so that I KNOW that I have a stable Classic platform.
(STILL use CricketGraph every once in a while also for the QC charting since they actually provided the proof that their statistical analysis functions worked properly.)

  • How can I open files from Appleworks and Pages 4.3 in Mavericks?

I have documents I created in Appleworks and Pages 4.3 that I can't open in Pages 5.1 using Mavericks.  How can I open those files?

Mavericks is the Operating System (OSX).
LibreOffice [free] may be able to open your AppleWorks files but probably not perfectly.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them.

  • Does anyone know how to open an old AppleWorks document: Address DB.cwk is the name of the document. I've tried Pages, iWork applications, Word and keep getting an error message.

This is an old file saved from a crashed MacBook and we're trying to figure out if we can get the information from the file - a list of contacts and addresses.
Appreciate any help you can supply.

As of Lion (10.7) the PowerPC compatibility "Rosetta" utility is no longer supported by Apple.  So PowerPC programs such as AppleWorks no longer work.
For old software that will run under 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9 and will read some of the AppleWorks formats see:

If your Mac came with Snow Leopard or and earlier OS you can run Snow Leopard (10.6) on an external drive or on a partition on your internal drive to continue running PowerPC programs under the Rosetta utility.  Using the Startup Manager http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1310 you would boot Snow Leopard to run the PowerPC applications and then reboot a newer OS (10.7, 10.8 or 10.9) to run normally.
If you have a newer machine or will be using the PowerPC applications often and you want to run them on Snow Leopard at the same time you run a newer operating system, then you can use a virtual machine such as Parallels, VirtualBox, or VMWare Fusion.  You need the Snow Leopard Server version to use it with a virtual machine (VM).  You need to call Apple to order SL Server.

  • Word docs opening only in AppleWorks

Tiger came with Microsoft Test Drive software installed.
So, when I went to open an old Word doc, instead of launching my version of Word 2000, it launched Word 2005 (the test drive). I went to the Get Info panel and toggled it to select my version Word 2000 as the default application for all Word docs, but it kept reverting back to the new Test Drive version. I could tell by the new logo. Anyway, I finally trashed the entire Test Drive folder, but it still tried to revert to Word 2005. In exasperation, I toggled to Appleworks and set it as the default Application hoping to then switch to Word 2000. But now all Word docs are opening in Appleworks and when I switch the default to Word 2000, it won't "take".
I've tried every possible way to switch this within the Get Info pane, so I'm wondering is there some re-set somewhere or, better yet, some other way of setting a default application?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks much!
P.S. I can INDIVIDUALLY set Word docs to open in Word 2000, but I have hundreds of Word docs and don't want to have to set their permissions individually.

Try instead of trashing Word reinstalling the test drive from the restore disks, and then running the uninstaller that comes in the Microsoft Office folder of the test drive.

  • Help on opening a damaged Appleworks file

I have a large Appleworks file that I cannot open. The file is about 300 pages with photos. It was getting very slow and unresponsive so I thought it was way past due to save and put it on a disc. When I opened it the next day,(from the HD) I added a few sentences and then hit save. The pinwheel came up and just kept on. I couldn't get out of it hitting escape. I had to kill power to the computer. When I went to open the file, a window came up telling me that I had to do a recovery operation because the file had not been saved properly. I did that and then tried to open the file. The pinwheel came up again then a window telling me that the file could not be opened because it is damaged. This was my journal and I had no backups so I'm a bit freaked. Any suggestions?

  • How to Open Writings In Appleworks Circa 2000/2001?

My Wife has over a Thousand Poems she has written prior to 2004 and cannot open them ERROR Message is " This cannot be open ...created in earlier version of Apple Works.

Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) states that it can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF, so that they can be opened in a variety of programs including TextEdit: I haven't tried this but it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames. It is Mountain Lion-compatible. There is a free trial:

  • How can I open my existing AppleWorks and ClarisDraw drawings?

I purchased iWork and installed it. Now AppleWorks is gone. I don't remember agreeing to loose AppleWorks when I installed iWork. I can't open my drawings.
Anyway, if AppleWorks is not going to continue, does anyone know what current/supported/ongoing application can import or open ClarisDraw and/or AppleWorks drawings? I really don't want to throw out my existing drawings and start over from scratch. I have some that I have brought forward from MacDraw to MacDrawPro to Claris Draw, and with some difficulty, to AppleWorksDraw.
By the way, if you wanted a program that worked a lot like ClarisDraw/AppleWorks drawing application, and you were starting fresh, which easy-to-use, intuitive, simple, not expensive, drawing application would you use?
    Thanks.

    Hi D,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
As Roger has already noted, SHOUTING is frowned upon here. Please lose the capitals. A second item of forum courtesy: Since your question has little connection with the topic of this thread (opening Drawing documents), it should be posted as a New Topic. Doing so makes your question and replies to it easier to search for anyone coming later with a similar question.
    Regarding Bento:
From what I've read so far, Bento can import only CSV text files. To convert an AppleWorks DB to CSV is a two step process, and one or both steps will require AppleWorks.
Step 1: Open the DB file (requires Appleworks 6), Choose List or a laytout that contains all fields, Save as...ASCII Text. This creates a tab delimited text file.
Step 2: Open the text file into an AppleWorks Word Processor document (or into any other WP or Text Processing application that supports Find/Change), use Find/Change to Find all the tab characters (\t) and Change them to commas (,). Save the result as ASCII Text. In the Finder, remove any suffixes from the filename and replace them with ".csv".
The .csv file should be importable into Bento.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • TS3938 How can I open my numerous Appleworks files now I have OSX 10.7 Lion?

I have just installed OS X 10.7 Lion on my iMac and, to my horror, I find that I cannot open my numerous old Appleworks files due to "Power PC applications no longer being supported".
Is there any way that I can perhaps burn these files to a CD and transfer them to my old iBook G4 which still runs 10.3 Panther? Or is there anything else I can do to salvage these old files?
Many thanks in anticipation of a positive answer.
    Alan.

    Hello Duckfeet22,
Your data is not lost, you can burn the files to use them with AppleWorks on your iBook G4 or if those files were created by AppleWorks 6 or 7 and if you have a copy of iWork, you can easily open your word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation files in Pages, Numbers, and Keynote respectively.
You can also buy Eazydraw ( http://www.eazydraw.com/ ) $20 license for 9 months , with full import of AppleWorks, ClarisDraw, MacDrawPro, and MacDrawII files.
There's a free Free Demo here if you just want to view, draw, save, print, up to 30 graphics.
    Hope this will help.
