Opening CS4 in CS3

Jesus! From one version to the next, you are gonna tell me Adobe couldn't think up a way to still open CS4 docus in CS3?? I know about the INX extension and "saving down." But what if the document you have was saved by another person and this person isn't available so you can ask for another version of the document?
Illustrator opens legacy AND new versions as well no matter what format you saved it in, Photoshop does it, Flash does, Dreamweaver does it....why does InDesign have to be the only special one?
I'd bet assure that Adobe didn't think of a fix in the so revered CS5.....
I'm sure installing the plug-ins might help, but don't know if these are free and even if they are, you have to install a gazillion of them just to open a damn file.

Photoshop's Save as Photoshop PDF command saves a file with a PDF extension, which by default opens in Preview or Acrobat, not Photoshop. Changing one letter in the extension causes the file to still behave as a PDF when placed in InDesign, but it opens in Photoshop by default. Adobe has be ability to make Photoshop, so they have the ability to change that letter. They haven't.
Illustrator is such an amateurish product in so many ways, and so many features have been sloppily introduced and never improved. Graphing is a good example, but there are many others. New features are introduced and promoted not to make the lives of users easier but to add bullet points to the feature list in order to justify upgrades. But once the feature is half-assedly added, it's development is abandoned in order to produce more new features. I think Adobe just doesn't want to have a list of “new” features that are actually just fixes to the crappy old features we already know about. Besides, despite the crappiness of said features, we still but the damned thing. Why fix what, as are as the accountants are concerned, isn’t broke?
But back to the discussion at hand. I side with Bob on this one. InDesign is probably the best developed and supported Adobe product in my quiver. I don’t want the developers to be limited in how new features are added and how those features are integrated into the file format just so I don’t have to chase down my clients’ suppliers to get .INX or .IDML files or to save them the trouble when they need my files downsaved. I work in my version of InDesign (currently 6) and dealing with older versions is someone else’s problem.

Gray image frames when opening CS4 in CS3

Hi,
When I export a CS4 inx file to open in CS3, without the images correctly linked there is no image preview, just gray boxes. Is there anyway for this not to happen?
For now, I have to give the editor this inx file for editing copy only on a different computer, then he gives it back to me. He obviously doesn't have CS4 yet and getting him all the images is out of the question.

Yes. Correctly link the images (or embed them). You won't see them unless they're there.
If the editor needs to see the images, consider giving him a low-res PDF. He can edit the text in the INX and check the pictures against the PDF.
BTW, expect less-than-perfect results round-tripping through INX through CS3 back to CS4. You'll see some text reflow opening his CS3 .indd file, but only after you've begun to edit the story. And of course, any CS4-only features will be lost or mangled.

Opening CS4 file in CS3

I haven't been able to open a Premiere Pro CS4 file (.prproj) in Premiere Pro CS3. I get the message "The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements." And CS4 will not save as a CS3 file (.prproj). Why, you ask, would I want to bring an edited CS4 file into CS3??? Because the FLVs produced by CS4 are "soft" (blurred) compared to FLV files produced in CS3 and I don't want to have to re-edit the production. Does anyone know if it's possible to get an edited file from CS4 into CS3? Thanks!

Backward compatibility is seldom possible, if ever. Closest that I have come is Encore CS3 Projects do Open in EncoreDVD 2.0, with few issues, but that is the ONLY instance that I have seen.
Now, one could Export from CS4 and then Import the resulting file in CS3 for the FLV Export. Maybe the Lagarith Lossless CODEC would help here?
Another way might be to take the CS4 Project into AE and then take that into CS3. Have not tried this, so there could be a few pit-falls and workarounds.

From CS4, export the file in INX format. Then you can open it in CS3 (assuming you have the most recent update of CS3). Of course, you lose anything you've created using CS4 features, so examine it carefully.

At home i use cs4 but in university they only have cs3, i know it is possible to open up a cs3 project in cs4 but unfortunatly if i do any further work on this at home in cs4 and save the project it no longer seems compatible with after effects cs3. So, is it possible to open a cs4 project in cs3?

No, it's not possible without using hacks. And Adobe can't support or endorse hacks
Bear in mind that not only there are new features in a new version which can't possibly be recreated by an older version - also, there are enhancements to existing features, which would make them render differently in the two versions.
That said, there are people posting such hacks, as Sébastien pointed out.

Have CS3 and CS4, removed CS3, now no ID files will open

I had both InDesign CS3 and CS4 installed. By default when I would open an ID file, it would always open in CS4. I forgot CS3 was on there so I uninstalled it and restarted the computer. Now nothing starts in Indesign at all unless i actually open it with Indesign. Also all the ID files no longer have the pink icon, its just a while square. Is there a way to reset this? I dont see a repair option in the ID setup anywhere.

Platform? Windows or Mac? OS Version? If you are on the mac you could probably get that resolved pretty easy with RC Default Apps

I'd think if you didn't want to go that route you could just open CS4 InDesign, make a new doc, save it and it should get an icon. Right click that badboy and hold option to choose always open with. Toss a logout or restart into the machine and it should work for you. That RC Default apps is a real jewel though.
If you still get issues maybe see if JoJo cures it. It's nice if you have multiple versions of ID or Quack XPress.

CS3 files no
matter how large or small and across netwrks. I would try
opening your file
in CS3 again, do a save as with a new name, then launch CS4
and try opening
the newly saved file.

EPS file opens as code language on Mac CS4 and CS3

A client is providing us with some art work for packaging material in EPS format. The Illustrator CS4 and CS3 open these files as some kind of Code language. This is how it looks like on my illustrator window ( saved as PDF and copy pasted a portion ):

Illustrator CS4 and CS3 crashing on two different mac's - can not save or print

We have two Macs running 10.5.6, with CS4 and CS3 installed. Both systems seem to be crashing today when trying to save, print, etc any file. Some files that were created in CS3 that are older seem to be opening and saving. But anything I know was worked on yesterday are having issues on both systems.
Anyone have any ideas?
I have tried trashing the preferences, and also booting in safe mode and still get crashes.

Problem with opening cs4 document in cs5.5

I have quite a big document of a catalog, created in InDesign cs4. It contains many layers and different master pages. When I open this document in cs5.5 layers and master pages get completely confused and the document looks completely different. When I created the inx-file in cs4 and opened it in cs3 everything was alright. Does anybody know what the problem in cs5.5 could the problem? Am I doing sth wrong?

I've been looking at the file, and it is indeed a puzzlement.
There is some good news, however. I don't know why it is happening (perhaps a bug, and maybe John would like to take a look at this, too), but it looks like the Paper-filled rectangle from Hinweise layer on the right of Master Ee is being copied to the left half of the actual document spreads on random layers. The pages that seem to be blank are easy to spot in the Page panel (22, 24, 26 & 32) and you can simply Cmd-Shift click on the rectangles on those pages to override and your text and graphics will be revealed. I'm not immediately picking up any other problems scanning quickly through the pages. For a quick and dirty get it done solution, I think this will work, though I would use the .inx file rather than the .indd for the conversion in CS5.5.
I've looked through the file history, and it is long. This started out in 2007 in CS2 and has gone through updates in CS3 and CS4, and been recovered from crashes at least 4 times (which might have something to do with the strangeness). I also think there are a lot of extraneous unused frames on many of the pages. If it were my project, I'd probably clean it up as much as possible in CS4, even going as far as recreating the master pages in a new document and then going page by page and doing a copy/paste in place of all non-master objects into the new file if you don't want to spend the time to place everythign again from scratch, which in my opinion would be a better idea (I tried moving the pages to a new file, but that didn't make any difference in the CS5.5 conversion). You could also rebuild from Scratch in CS5.5.

Abobe CS4 to CS3

Backsaving Photoshop CS4 to CS3

How do you backsave files in Photoshop from CS4 to CS3. I did work on files in CS4 over weekend and saved as .tif, .jpg (which loses my layers) .psd, photshop 2.... but I cannot open any of the files on my computer at work which has CS3.

Did You Maximize Compatibility when saving the psd-files?
Because those should open in CS3 without problems, although some stuff (like Masks Panel-changes) might not be maintained.

Preview with CS4 or CS3 on OS10.5.4 gets wrong URL path

First, I did a rather extensive search within the archives
for this before posting but, at least in my searches, could not
find any previous posts that addressed this.
I know what is happening I just don't know why. I am working
with a very simple static site. I've set up the path in the site
manager so that the root path is as follows:
/Users/phoppes/Documents/Development/Training/DreamweaverCS3/testsite
Links are relative to Document and I have enabled the cache.
This happens for both CS4 or CS3. If I create a simple one line
html file and hit preview, Firefox opens up but the path in the URL
is as follows:
file:///System/Users/phoppes/Documents/Development/Training/DreamweaverCS3/testsite/test.h tml
I get the "File not Found" message:
Firefox can't find the file at
/System/Users/phoppes/Documents/Development/Training/DreamweaverCS3/testsite/test.html.
My HD on my Mac is named System. Obviously something inside
of DW is attaching the /System to the front of the URL to open
Firefox. If I go into the URL tab in Firefox and hack out the
/System, the page is found and displays correctly. If I try to
redefine the site root in the Site Manager with the /System in the
front DW does not like this. It complains it cannot find the path
as I believe DW is appending /System to the front itself so the
path becomes /System/System/Users/.... which is incorrect also. I
can work around this,....I have to hack the url every time I do a
preview but it is a PITA and I'd like to not have to do this if
possible.
Any help would be appreciated.
PS - Not sure if this is causing it but I do have a custom
/etc/hosts file on my machine. The top looks like the following:
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthostt
::1 localhost
Following this line are static IP's for machines on my local
network. This machine is networked via DHCP
so there is not a listing for this machine in the hosts file.

What is in the HTTP address field of the Local site
definition?

Converting CS4 in CS3 - loss of structure

I have experienced the following problems by converting a Illustrator CS4 file into the CS3 format: If the downgraded document is opened by a CS3 user, radial gradients which are compressed and/or rotated will be combined in a pixel-array and aren't any longer editable. If the gradient is in a group, all other elements within are compressed too and are reduced to one layer. It's a virtual disaster! Especially with a view to nonstandard-colours (PANTONE) that are used in my gradients and that will be converted into pixel-images! Does anybody experienced same problems and have a workaround? I have to save full editable CS3 files for further processing.
In addition to this I recognized that some tabs in text fields will be placed on the wrong position and some text fields are jumping on the plumb line.
I thought that CS4 is using the same text-engine as CS3. That doesn't suit my plans! Can anybody help?

Normal behavior. Since the gradient tool in CS4 has more or less been redone from scratch, this is to be expected.

You cannot open CS4 files with CS3. You'll need to get your friemd to save it as a CS3 file, which CS4 can do.,, each version of Flash can save to the version before it, but any new functionality related to CS4 will be lost.
