Opening Damaged/Corrupted JPEG files

I've recently had a bunch of JPEG pictured transferred from a damaged external drive, and when I try to open some of the with "Preview" it tells me that file can't be opened because it is damaged or in a file format that is not recognized.  Is there a program out there that might be able to open these damaged files?

You'd want to ask in the Adobe Photoshop forum (http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop)
There are people there who've successfully repaired JPGs and can recommend software for it.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 saves corrupted jpeg files!

    I just cant understand this???
Photoshop CC 2014 saves corrupted jpeg files and some other file formats. PSD and PNG works.
I have try with the latest iMac and the latest Mac Book Pro, both with Mavericks and Yosemite. Im saving to their internal hard drives. I can not open the corrupted photos on any application.

Nobody else has had problems with the files saved by Photoshop.
Are you sure you aren't just saving the wrong file extension on a different file type (i.e.: a PSD file with .jpeg on the end still isn't a JPEG file)?

  • In PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but PSD, DNG and CR2 files don't. Also, no thumbnail below the file list.

Working in PSE 13, when I open a folder, jpeg files have a preview image, but psd files just have white sheet of paper as preview.  I have to open the file to be able to see it.  Also, there is no thumbnail of the file below the file list.Surely, there's a setting that needs to be changed. I did not have this problem with Elements 12. This is a real bother because I have to use Lightroom to see all the file types. It seems as if Elements is using the standard Windows file loader that can't show previews of file types it doesn't know including .PSD, DNG and CR2. Is that a bug or did I do something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I am using Windows 7 64 bits. Working in the editor, I never use the organizer. The screen above is not the same at all that I got in Elements 12, it was completely different and showed me a thumbnail below the listing when I single clicked on one of the files. In Elements 12, I also could see  a thumbnail of all the file types, not only the jpegs. It is as if the loader is the regular Windows used anywhere, not the right one for Elements. I hope someone understands my problem.. Thanks.

  • Corrupted JPEG Files

Apologies, I may have chosen the wrong category.
I've been trying to find a software recommended to sort out a corruption pb with JPEG files that I have recovered following a hard drive crash.
What would the Mac community recommend to optimise my chances to read these files ?

Here's an old site that might prove interesting
    http://www.tow.com/software/jpeg-jfif_repair/
Be sure to backup the original damaged jpegs and only work on the copies.

I'm new to Photoshop Elements 10. When I save JPEG files in elements they will not open in Windows 7. They come up saying they are Type 1,2 or 3 files. can anybody help?

    Hi Steve

Launch PSE holding these Alt+Ctrl+Shift keys until you get below window
delete settings and then try the same.

  • Corrupted jpeg files (which other apps read fine)

Hi, I'm running Lightroom on OS X. I imported several years of photos into it, and almost all were added to the Library just fine, but for two images (both JPEG files), Lightroom told me it can't read them because they're corrupt.
The thing is, these same images are viewable just fine in:
    - Photoshop CS
    - OS X Finder
    - OS X Preview
    - Picasa
    - Windows Explorer
    - anything else I've tried
Anyway I can find out why Lightroom thinks they're corrupt, and fix them so Lightroom can manage them?

Betty: I've retried at least 5 times, no luck. (I've seen a similar intermittent problem importing JPEG files which were not corrupt, directly from a flash card reader, and Lightroom only got about 60% of the files; I tried again and it got the rest. This problem is different though -- the files are already on my local hard drive, and no amount of retrying seems to help.)
John: Can you recommend any such tools? I'm willing to use whichever OS; I have Linux and Windows around as well. I tried a couple, but didn't turn up anything. I'm a fan of DataRescue (as a software developre, their IDA tool is really good) so I tried PhotoRescue, but it seems targetted specifically at recovering data from a corrupted flash card, and doesn't work on individual files at all.

  • Can't open CR2 or JPEG files with Photoshop CS5 on Mac

I recently switched an existing install of Photoshop CS5 to a new MacBook Pro that's running Yosemite (10.10.1).
Photoshop could open most images (e.g. PNG, TIFF, PSD) but it could not—and still cannot—open any JPEG images. These same JPEGs open fine on Preview. I started this thread about the issue a few months ago:
Strange "out of memory" errors all of the sudden
I recently tried to open CR2 files from my (old but trusty) Canon EOS 1D Mark II and Photoshop says that it doesn't recognize the file type.
I tried to install version 7.1 of Adobe Camera Raw but each time I try to install it the Adobe installer displays a cryptic "Update Failed. This patch is not applicable for you." error message.
I don't know what else to try. I'd reinstall Photoshop CS5 but I don't know how to do this since it didn't come with any CDs and I can't find any Adobe resource online to reinstall Photoshop.
    Help!

  • Lightroom won't open TIFF or JPEG files to CS5

Recently upgraded to a new iMac. This morning when I tried to open a TIFF file from Lightroom 3.4.1 into Photoshop CS5 I got a message saying: Lightroom was unable to prepare the selected file at /Volumes/Drobo1/Photos/2011/02-14-2011 Yellowstone/Yellowstone-0641-Edit.tif for editing.
    It will not be opened.
The only way Lightroom will open a TIFF or JPEG image to CS5 is if I tell it to open a copy of the image with Lightroom Adjustments. If I say I want to edit the original or a copy, it won't do it.
If I go into CS5 and open the TIFF there, it works fine, so the problem doesn't seem to be with CS5.
Lightroom WILL open RAW files into CS5 without any error message.
I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8, which was upgraded yesterday and am wondering if that's the problem since I could open TIFFs on the new computer before.
    Phil

Do you have full permissions to the DROBO folder the files are in?  I'm a Windows person so I can't tell you how to check this, but upgrading a OS and then things not working might be related to permissions where the files were created with a profile on the previous OS.

  • Robohelp 7 - Opening a Corrupt HTML File

I recently upgraded from Robohelp X5 to 7. Luckily my .XPJ
project file has not corrupted yet (knock on wood) but I was
wondering if anyone knows how to fix a project file in Robohelp 7.
In Robohelp X5, I deleted the .XPJ and .CPD files and right-clicked
the .HHP file to open the file. Then I compiled.
Is it the same procedure for version 7?

I did upgrade from 5 to 7. It worked great for awhile, then
all of a sudden I was getting an error on my XPJ file. I renamed my
XPJ and CPD files, then opened the HHP file. My project came up and
is working. Now.. the only problem I have now is getting my tags
and single source layouts back. For some reason they are all gone
now. If anyone knows a way to get these back that would be great.
By the way.. I do still see them on my system as *.SSL
    files.

  • Try to open a possible corrupted PPT file

Does Microsoft have any tool to repair a corrupted PPT file?  Do I have to use the 3rd party recover tool to fix the problem?
I tried to insert a slide from PPT file but did not find that option available when I attempted to open the corrupted PPT file.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Which Office version did you use?  Is it a password-protected file? Was the file sent to you as an e-mail attachment?
If your file is truly corrupt, there are a number of things you can try to recover it.
Use Slides from Files on the Insert menu.
    Locate a TMP file.
Open the presentation in Microsoft Office Word.
Move the file to a different place.
Open the file in a different way.
    Use Safe Mode.
    Use Damaged Presentations Troubleshooters.
    Try a third-party recovery tool.

  • How do I fix or open a corrupted file that has been corrupted by some sort of programmatically email

How do I fix or open a corrupted PDF file that has been corrupted by some sort of programmatically emailing?
Please see the following screen shot:
    http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h292/Athono/pdfproblem_zpsbd9bdc00.png

Well, it is a pdf file, and it once was a readable one, I suppose.
It must have data on the hex or binary level that can be retrieved.
If necessary, I will have to look into the file format of a PDF file?  Is this documented?
