Opening .doc files in pages

Someone has sent me a .doc word file and when i right click 'open in pages' a window is displayed reading 'the file format is invalid'. It's strange because this has never happened before and we haven't done anything different to what we normally do regarding opening .doc files etc.
It doesn't open in text edit either. Does anyone have any work around? Free word software anywhere on the internet?
Really need some help with this, hours of work has gone into this file we can't open!! And now it might be lost!
Cheers,

The simple soluce would be to ask the author for a document using a format which you will be able to read.
A message which I like to send is: +"Your xyz.doc document is not recognized as a standard format on my machine so it was deliberately deleted. If you wish that I read it's contents, use an other format. Don't try with PowerPoint, it would be trashed too."+
Is it too complicated?
My guess is that the document uses the most recent .doc format. If I'm right, as thisformat was not defined when Pages 3 was built, the described behavior is not surprising.
I don't know the details of this file format.
You may send it to my mailbox, I will be glad to look at its internals. (the readable contents is not what I'm interested to.

  • Problem opening .doc files in pages/.xls files in numbers...

My hard drive recently failed and has been replaced.  Since the new hard drive was installed, I am unable to open .doc files with pages or .xls files with numbers.  I never had this problem before.

    I have I-work 09 [Pages 4.0 (727)]
This is the same version I had before (I think) -- At the Apple Store they used a new I-Work disc to install it onto the new hard drive.
I hope someone can help with this!
    Thank you!

  • I can no longer open .doc files with pages 5

    hi,
whenever I click on a .doc document pages tells me that:
    "Pages doesn’t support RTF files."
this is very annoying and complicates everyday exchange with colleges,
does anyone has an idea how to solve that? make pages open .doc?
    best,
    jakob

The weird thing is that it was a .doc file (I suspect an older version is what has caused that error) and not .rtf... I tried to open the same document with the older version of pages, which worked fine.
No, I can assure you it was an RTF file.  The fact that the filename ended ".doc" is irrelevant and certainly does not make a file a Microsoft Word document.  The filename is irrelevant, and the file content is what's critical.  For example, I could take a .mp3 music file, and then rename it "Presentation.doc".  You would not be able to open this in any word processing software on any operating system.
Also remember that having files end with ".xxx", although a requirement in Microsoft Windows is completely optional in other operating systems like OS X and Linux.  Files do not have to have "extensions" at all.
    You have two options:
    1.  Rename the file, removing the ".doc" part.  Now when you open in Finder, it will automatically open with Text Edit, which is OS X's RTF editor.  If you absolutely must cling to Windows conventions, you could set the extension as ".rtf" - it makes no difference, as Finder uses the file content format to detemine the best program to use.
    2.  If you do have Microsoft Word available (either on Windows or Mac), open the .doc file in Word, choose "save as..", change the document type from RTF to the Word ".doc" format, ignore the warning informing you that you are changing the format, and then Save.  Now you can open the file in Pages.
    Hope this helps.

You need to manually install the 10.6.2 "Combo" version, there were problems with just using the regular update.

  • Can't open doc. files in pages

Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Pages won't let me open doc files.
Is there a way I can fix this?
Also...I was just thinking about upgrading to the newer iLife09.
Would that be a better thing to do running Snow Leopard and what not?
And if I do upgrade to iLife09, I'll still be able to open iLife08 documents.
    Thanks

iLife & iWork are two separate software packages/suites sold by Apple. I do believe you mean iWork '08.
Many users are finding problems with the iWork apps in Snow Leopard due to not having the latest updates as of the September 28 installed. For iWork '08 that is Pages 3.0.3 & Numbers 1.0.3. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.2 & Numbers 2.0.2. iWork '09 has since had update 3. I don't use Keynote, but it should also be updated. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '08 or iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08 or iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '08 or '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • Open .doc file with pages

Is there a possibility, that I can double click a .doc file and pages instead of word will open the document?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
If the Word document is password protected Pages will not open it. I suggest trying one of the Office clones such as NeoOffice or Open Office.

  • Can't open .doc files in Pages with Snow Leopard

I just installed Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Pages can no longer open .doc files. I receive the error message: "The document “XXX.doc” couldn’t be opened."
    (Operating with iWork 09)
    Help?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
But now I don't have the option "save as" word document as I used to before I installed the update for snow leopard. It only lets me save as iwork '06 or '05.
That's Pages 3/iWork '08. You may have both iWork '08 & '09 on your Mac & '08 has opened. You can have more than one version, I have three, but you'll need to find a way to identify each one. I have changed the icons for two of the versions & have aliases to each in a folder where I added the version number. This way I can know which one I'm opening & they look different in my Dock. Do not add a version number to the actual application, the updaters then won't find them. (Can you tell I like changing icons? )

  • Problems opening .doc file in pages?

Hi this is my first post so please redirect me if this question has already been answered.  Ok, I am trying to open a .doc file that I typed in Officesuite pro 6 on my Kindle Fire 2G, and after I have downloaded it to my mac (2006 iMac running OS X 10.6.8), I try to open it and I get this error:
Please tell me if I need to use a converter, rewrite it, or do whatever needs to  be done to get it opened.  By the way I am using iWork '09.
    Thanks for your help!

Even though it is labeled as a .doc file, obviously Pages knows it wasn't created with Word. First, you might see if TextEdit can open it & re-save it as .doc or .rtf & see if Pages would recognize it. Another option would be to use a free Office clone such as LibreOffice to open & re-save it.
Or it just could be the # in the file name. Try renaming the file & see what happens.

  • Increasingly cannot open .doc files in Pages

Am a big pages user and have all .doc files auto set to open in Pages.
But since moving over to my new MB Air I find I can't open a lot of .doc files.
Not sure if its something I tweaked previously on my old Air of if there are just changes that Word has made that Pages isn't dealing well with.
    I'm running Pages 4.0.4
    Anyone got any ideas?

Maybe the documents are created with the late Word version in a format which is not recognized by Pages '09 which was introduced in january 2009.
Maybe the memory available is short or the available space available on the HD is short too.
iWork application use Virtual memory which is in fact HD space.
As the SSD delivered with the new macBook Air are small, I'm afraid that this is the true explanation.

  • Is there a way to open doc files in Pages by default?

I am new to Mac's, previous PC user. anyhow, just got a new MacBook Pro and love it. I purchased iWorks and am using Pages to create and open Word documents.
My question is what steps should I take to have Pages open Word docs by default. Right now when I try to open a Word doc downloaded from another location, it tries to use the trial version of Word for Mac.
    Thanks.

Highlight a known Word document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Pages. If Pages is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Pages application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Pages. You can then double-click the Word documents & they will open in Pages. Note that the icon for the Word files will have a plain, white icon. Repeat with Excel/Numbers & PowerPoint/Keynote.

  • Choosing Default Program for Opening .doc files

    Hi all,
A couple of days ago I somehow managed to change my default program for opening .doc files to Pages and I would rather use Microsoft Word as the default. I dont know how I ended up changing this default, but I would like to know how to put the default back to MS Word.
    Thanks for any help!

Choose any one of the files you want to change. Then, command-i to "Get Info". Open the disclosure triangle under "Open With" choose "Microsoft Word" then click on "Change All".

  • Opening a .doc file in Pages results in Untitled document?

    Hi all!
I've reinstalled iWork '06, along with the rest of my OS, and I've noticed something strange: if I set Pages as default to open .doc files, every time I double-click on a .doc file, Pages opens it in an Untitled document.
Of course, when it comes to saving changes, Pages asks me to save them in the Untitled, not in the original document. No matter that I exported the file in .doc in Pages in the first place, it just doesn't save it.
    How come?

Before Pages 3/iWork '08, Pages opened any "foreign" document (Word, AppleWorks, text, RTF) as an untitled Pages document, just as it does a template. When you export a document, you're doing just that, not saving it. Pages "knows" you haven't saved it as a Pages document so the title doesn't change until you do save it.
Since Pages 3, a "foreign" document will have the name of the original with the .pages extension added. But the rest of the process is the same.

  • How do I make Pages my default program for opening doc files

Currently TextEdit is the default program to open doc files that I download from emails. Now that I've installed iWork 08 I would like Pages to be the default program. Thanks!

Right-click any .DOC file and select Get Info. Then choose Pages as the open with application and select "Change For All. Pages is now your default app for .DOCs.

  • Pages app freezes when trying to open .doc file

    Hello everyone!
Recently I faced the problem with opening .doc files originally created in Word for Windows in Pages. If the .doc file contains any table, Pages app constantly freezes trying to open it so I have to Force quit it. It happened with few documents containing tables. If the .doc file contains no tables everything works OK.
I've tried to open files created in Word 2003 and 2007 for Windows. My iWork's version is 4.0.3 (766).
    Can anyone help me please?

    Hi Old-cockatoo
    Welcome to the forum.
Try altering the format/ing of the original file and see what may be the cause. e.g. Try saving to .rtf.
Check if there are unsupported features in the Word tables, such as rotated text in cells or a rotated page. Essentially look for variances that could trigger the problem.
Also look for alternatives to Pages:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=47&mforum=iworktipsn trick
Pages is not a full substitute for MsWord despite what Apple suggests, implies, hints, intimates, signals, presupposes, infers, signals, says indirectly, gives you to understand… but doesn't actually say if you read the fine print.

  • Pages error when opening .doc file

I've recently installed Snow Leopard, but I'm still using Pages 2/iWork '06.
Before I installed SL, I had the same version of Pages installed for my own work as well NeoOffice to open any .docs I was sent.
Although I normally used NeoOffice for those .docs, Pages would still open any .doc file, but would normally not display it correctly.
Since installed SL, I've also installed Pages, but not NeoOffice. I want to open a .doc file with Pages, but when I try to do so, I get an error message, which reads:
Pages quit unexpectedly while using SLCompatibility plug-in.
Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
If I click 'Reopen', Pages opens, but the .doc file doesn't. If I click 'Ignore' (another button), Pages closes.
The same error and crash occurs whatever .doc file I try to open. It's not just one file.
I don't know what SLCompatibility plug-in is, those SL could be Snow Leopard.
Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan.

    Thanks for the reply.
I'm running 10.6.2 -- I'm not sure what you mean by 'combo' update, but I updated my new installation of SL yesterday with all the updates that software update could find.
    My Pages is version 2.0.2.
I deleted the specified file, then repaired permissions, but I'm still having exactly the same problem.
    Some .doc files say:
Pages quit unexpectedly while using SLCompatibility plug-in.
Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.
    Some others say:
The document "xxxxxx.doc" couldn't be opened
Do you have any more ideas what's going wrong?
EDIT: Should I remove the Arial .tff fonts which have minor problems according to Font Book? I don't know much about Font Book. If I remove them, will I still be able to use Arial? I don't want to permanently delete Arial.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan.
