Opening document in Word, sent from a PC.

Since I updated to Snow Leopard I can't open e-mail attached documents in Word.
The system wants to use Pages, which I do not have installed.  Why does it do that?  Any ideas how I can have the attachment open in Word?

If it's a .docx Word document, then it's in XML format. Which if you're using MS Word, you need Office 2008 or 2011.
That's incorrect. Word, in Office 2004, can read .docx documents with the Office 2004 11.5.0 Update and the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac installed.

    Hi MIXAYA,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  In OS X, by default apps will open with any previously opened documents opening as well.  To disable this feature, select "Close windows when quitting an application" from System Preferences > General.  To learn more, see this article:
    OS X Mavericks: General preferences

    Close windows when quitting an application
    If you quit apps with windows still open on your screen, selecting this checkbox prevents the windows from reopening automatically the next time you start their app.

    Trying to open a cad drawing sent from an HP and all it is are unreadable characters. Is there an application I can download to make this readable?

    How is the cad being "sent."  If it is a proprietary format you may need a reader program.  Contact the CAD programs site.  Check the CAD program for export options (PDF etc that are readable on your mac.

  • How to open an MS-Word-File from a Java-Applikation ?

    Hi,
    i want to open an MS-Word-File from a Java-Applikation.
    Something like this:
    File myFile = new File("myFile.doc");
    myFile.open(); //unfortunately this methode doesn't exist
    Thanks for response

    In my opinion you have to use the Runtime.exec(String) method. I do not know the program name for msword.
    You can open a file in notepad by invoking the method Runtime.getRuntime().exec("notepad c:/xyz/abc.txt");
    Runtime runTime = Runtime.getRuntime();
    runTime.exec("programName" + " " + file);
    Of course the computer on which the program runs must have the application!
    Hope this helps!

    how do you open a Numbers file sent from another Mac user with same operating system, i get a pop up that says I'm missing an index.hml file??? HELP PLEASE

    The operating system may be the same but the Numbers applications are likely different.  You need to get the apps in sync.  Unfortunately, the Numbers (and Pages as well) saga is pretty confusing (and frustrating).  Here's some info from the iWork resident version expert (PeterBreis0807):
    Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
    Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
    Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
    Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
    Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
    All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
    Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
    Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs.

  • Can't open document using Word or Text Edit

    I couldn't find a specific topic so I'm posting this here. I just got a new white macbook and transferred some word documents to it. I was out of town and realized I'd forgotten to load the Word program, so I opened a couple of documents using Text Edit and saved them as new documents. One document opened without issue, but the other document won't open with either Text Edit or MS Word 2004. When I try to open it in Word the message states it cannot be opened and may or may not be a valid word document. When I try to open in TextEdit the message states that the document is not in the right format. Please help -- I really don't want to have to re-create the document as it is about 12 pages!
    Thanks, Sandy

    There are 2 unusual options in File, Open in the Windows version of Word (sorry, I'm on a Mac without Word). One is something like Recover Text From Any Format, and the other is Open and Repair. One I think is on a drop down menu in the Open screen. I'm not sure if these are available on the Mac version, but it's worth a try! Also: do you have all the proper converters set up? I have Word 2004 for Mac running on one machine, a legal copy, and I was able to do updates and even get a free conversion program that actually backward converts Word 2007 for Windows and Word 2008 for Mac files down to Word for Mac 2004. It's worked quite will. I support Word on Macs and Windows at work and have used that conversion utility to great advantage when we had users call with Word docs that wouldn't open. Good luck!

  • Saving/Opening documents to SharePoint 2013 from within Office 2010 applications

    I was hoping that Office 2010 would work nicely together in terms of saving to and opening documents from SharePoint 2013. Alas, I was disappointed and somewhat surprised to see that opening/saving documents in SharePoint from within Office still
    involves copying, pasting and hacking the URL of the document library in the Save or Open dialogue box. I was fully expecting that Office 2010 would have display some sort of SharePoint navigation so you could view your sites and document libraries in a similar
    way to folders. A mature document management system this ain't!
    Anyone have any advice on how to improve the Open/Save to/from SharePoint experience in Office 2010? I'm open to the idea of Office add-ins whether third party or official Microsoft.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for the reply, but that's from within SharePoint, not Office?
    An example scenario: I create a new document or receive a document, I'm in the document, and I want to publish the document to a document library in SharePoint. At the moment I would have to save the document, load up SharePoint, navigate to the document
    library and then go through the upload process.
    I should really be able to, from within Word, select File - Save to SharePoint (say) and then be able to navigate to the document library I want to publish to. Really basic DMS stuff that I'm surprised isn't there!
    Similar thing to opening a document. I should be able to Open from SharePoint, navigate to the document library via some sort of navigation box, and open it.
    Thoughts appreciated.

  • Opening Documents in Word Crashes the Server

    I posted this in the "Using OS X" forum, since I didn't believe the problem to be OS X Server-specific, but haven't received any response at all. So If no one objects, I'm going to give it a try here:
    I'm running OSX Server 10.4.11 (none of the other workstations are affected, so my assumption has been that this isn't a problem with the server software itself) on a MacPro 2 x 2.6GHz with 4GB of RAM.
    Here's the problem. Whenever I open Word (11.3.8) or Excel (11.3.7) and try to open a document (whether by selecting Open from the File menu, clicking on the button in the toolbar, or simply starting the application up from scratch), instead of the lovely Open Dialogue popping up, I get the Spinning Ball of Doom. Then the entire system hangs—I can click on other visible applications and the menu bar changes, but those apps are hung too; I can't access any of the menus, the Dock is inaccessible, and attempting to force quit from the keyboard does nothing. And, of course, because this is the server for our small office network, the entire network comes crashing down.
    I've reinstalled Office. I trashed the preference and cache files (though the problem pops up no matter what user or group I'm logged in on—and it doesn't affect any of the workstations other than the server, so I don't think it's a preferences problem; still, better safe than sorry). I ran Disk Utility and fixed permissions. No go. Help!
    Again, I am fairly sure that this has something to do with Office's proprietary Open dialogue box, because I can fire up Word and—if I've done so by double-clicking on a document in the Finder rather then on the application icon—edit and even save. I can open documents in non-MS applications just fine. (And, as I said, I can open and save Office documents on the other computers on the network.) But open a doc in Word or Excel (or, presumably, PowerPoint), and boom—everything comes crashing down.
    ETA: I am able to open the Office Project Launcher application with no problems. So I'm really stumped.
    Anyone have any ideas???

    So, an update of sorts.
    Turns out it's not a total hang—if I leave the ball spinning (for 30+ minutes), the open dialogue finally pops up... but it's in an empty home folder.
    We seem to have some sort of corruption of the home folder file hierarchy (there's an odd folder called "99" that appeared on the root of the server's main drive—I can't get access to it, and I don't want to monkey with the permissions until I can figure out what it is) that dates from the same time that our problem popped up. The only thing that I can think of that I changed at around that time was to add a new group home folder. Might I have mucked up the file system? (Shouldn't be that easy, should it? But hey, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!)
    Any thoughts or suggestions? Could the problems (the phantom folder and the spinning ball of almost-doom) be related? Or am I simply dealing with a pair of peculiarities that are unrelated, or that are both symptoms of yet another problem, rather than cause and effect?
    Thanks to everyone who's chimed in so far for you input!
    But, to reiterate, help!

  • Opening up a Word doc from Flash

    Hi people, im using Flash MX 2004 and want to know if I can
    load a Ms Word document from the .swf file once it has been
    published. I dont expect it to insert the text into the flash file,
    just to open up Ms Word.
    Thanks in advance...

    No - incorrect information - pointing to a doc file or any
    file will not launch the associated (if
    any) application on local hard drive - think of the security
    issues this would have raised decades ago.
    If anyone had the power to launch locally installed programs
    from a getURL command, flash content
    would have been avoided like the plague due to security
    reasons a long time ago.

  • Opening documents in Word

    Since yesterday morning, my workstation refuses to open any documents from SharePoint directly to Word or Excel. SharePoint is throwing me a message saying I don't have any compatible software installed, which I have (Office 2010). The weird thing is that
    this was working fine untill a couple of days ago, and now it suddenly broke. Of course I didn't change anything :) Perhaps something with an update or so, I don't know.
    I already tried repairing my Office installation, doesn't fix it. Also checked security settings in IE: the site is in the local intranet sites and the security for that zone is low (which enables activex and all that stuff). So what more can I do to get
    this right again? Really annoying :(
    MCTS Web Application Development, SharePoint enthousiast.

    We have a couple of SharePoint sites at my company, and lately I've noticed that I can't open any Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) from IE, Chrome, or Firefox (all latest versions) on my 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise PC running Office 2013 (365 ProPlus).
    Word and Excel open using the web apps just fine, but there's a problem anytime I try to open the files in their desktop applications. Here's the message from IE when I try to open an Excel file:
    (Sorry, we couldn't open <url>.)
    Followed by this:
    (Microsoft Excel cannot access the file <url>. There are several possible reasons: The file name does not exist, the file is being used by another program, the workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.)
    I've tried it on a different PC (my Windows 8.1 Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet) running Office 2013 (365 Family), and it works just fine, so I don't think it's the SharePoint site but rather some setting with my PC. I'm going to try repairing Office, but I'm wondering
    if you have any other ideas. Thanks!

  • Trouble opening documents in word that were created in pages (even though i saved as word doc)

    I know how to save documents in pages to word format, I've seen the tutorials and read things over and over again about this. However, I am creating some documents in pages, saving them as word docs, emailing them to other people who are opening up on PC with word, but the formatting and the paragraphs are all messed up.
