Opening documents in Firefox ( SOLVED )

Hi,
I cannot seem to open documents ( pdfs, doc, excel) directly from a website. When given the option of whether I want to download the file or open it, if I choose to open the file, it asks me for the location of the program. The same problem occurs when I click in the downloads notification box. I have to navigate to the actual file location and click on it, whereupon the appropriate program ( writer, okular..etc) is automatically chosen.
Is there anything I can do so the OS can automatically open the file without me having to navigate to the actual file and click on it?
Apologies if my problem is not clear...I cant seem to think of a better way to explain it.
Thanks in advance

Also, I have got openoffice plugin for firefox which is the default program for opening ODF files. However, it does not recognise .doc or .ppt extensions as compatible.

I believe that this is Firefox's default behavior to open the find file dialog.  I don't think there is a find application dialog like I've seen in windows.  I only use KDE though so maybe there is in Gnome.  Have you tried finding the application and then doing the other steps to see if firefox recognizes it then?  After I do this I can goto the Preferences > Applications and seen okular listed.  If you need to find out where the application is you can type from the terminal:
whereis <program-name>
It worked! Thanks a lot, mate.

  • I can't open documents in Firefox

    I can't open any files from Firefox. PDFs, Excel, etc. It used to work, and it still works fine in Internet Explorer, so it has to be this browser. What's up with it? It's getting to be so annoying I'm considering ditching Firefox.

       Yes, I checked for updates and was given a message that my Firefox was updated and my Lion, too.  I get no error messages with Firefox.  It just won't work.  If I click on a video link, nothing happens, yet if I switch to Safari, it works.  I went to the Firefox website and follow directions for that--turned off proxy--yet, it still doesn't work.
         As for MS Office/Word, I get a message saying it is activated, yet it never opens.  When I try to open a document, it just keeps taking me back to the registration page where it says I don't need to register it.  It has been maddening.

  • Stop Reader from Opening pdfs in Firefox?

    I have had substantial problems with Adobe Reader too numerous to detail here.  Suffice it to say that, as a result, I have been forced to turn to an alternative pdf reader.  Even though all web browser options in Adobe Reader prefs are disabled, the other software is set as my defauld pdf viewer, and  disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox, Adobe Reader continues to open pdfs from within Firefox.  (Disabling the plugin works for the current session, but resets when Firefox is restarted.)
    I like using Reader sometimes but unless I can figure out a way to prevent it from opening pdfs in Firefox, I will uninstall it entirely as my only option.  Does anybody have a suggestion as to how I can prevent Reader from opening documents in Firefox?
    Thanks for your help.

    If you are clicking on links which point to PDFs on the web, then Reader will be used to render the PDF using your default browser.
    If you do not wish to view the PDFs on the browser, and want to view them via the application please do the following:
    1. Launch Adobe Reader and goto Edit > Preferences
    2. Navigate to the Internet panel on the left, and uncheck the option to "Diaplay PDF in browser"
    3. Close Adobe Reader and try to launch a PDF link again. You will now be prompted to Save the PDF to your local disk which can then be opened via the application.
    Hope this helps

    How about if you right click on the PDF and select Save Link As..., and then open it locally from within Reader? Does it work ok then?  That might be a workaround until the issue within the browser is resolved.

  • How to undo "remember my choice" when opening a downloaded document in firefox (windows 8).

    I need to open a pdf in the firefox broswer, but since I clicked "open in TWINUI", and remember my choice, it doesn't let me open in the broswer anymore. How do I change that preference?

    You can change file actions in Tools > Options > Applications
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions
    See:
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/change-firefox-behavior-when-open-file
    Current Firefox versions have enabled a built-in PDF Viewer that doesn't have all features that other PDF readers like the Adobe Reader have or may not function properly otherwise.
    You can change the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) from Preview in Firefox to use the Adobe Reader or set to Always Ask in "Firefox > Options/Preferences > Applications".
    You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable the build-in PDF viewer.
    You can check the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref on the about:config page and remove the application/pdf part if present or reset the pref to the default via the right-click context menu.

  • Gnome-open opens urls only in firefox [SOLVED]

    Hi,
    I've been facing a problem since I switched from firefox to chromium, all the apps open urls in firefox.
    I've been investigating a little to find xdg-open uses gnome-open to open my urls.
    I've set up custom/chromium %s in Preffered Applications (I checked it's made in gconf too), but
    gnome-open http://archlinux.org
    keeps opening with firefox.
    I also tried to set epiphany as default browser, it doesn't work either.
    (I'm using 64bits Arch with multilib repository on, if that changes anything)
    Thanks for any clue!

  • Open documents in libreoffice from chromium [SOLVED]

    Hi everyone,
    When using chromium, I would like associate .doc(x), .ppt(x), etc. with libreoffice by default (wm - fluxbox).  If I try to click on the file once it has downloaded in chromium (on bar at bottom) I currently get:
    /usr/bin/xdg-open: line 455: firefox: command not found
    /usr/bin/xdg-open: line 455: mozilla: command not found
    /usr/bin/xdg-open: line 455: epiphany: command not found

    /usr/bin/xdg-open: line 455: w3n: command not found
    xdg-open: no method available for opening 'file.docx'
    Here is a link to my full /uxr/bin/xdg-open: http://pastebin.com/tWzs9hqP
    Here is the part around that line that looks to be of particular relevance:
    IFS=":"
    for browser in $BROWSER; do
    if [ x"$browser" != x"" ]; then
    browser_with_arg=`printf "$browser" "$1" 2>/dev/null`
    if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then
    browser_with_arg=$browser;
    fi
    if [ x"$browser_with_arg" = x"$browser" ]; then
    "$browser" "$1";
    else eval '$browser_with_arg'$xdg_redirect_output;
    fi
    if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
    exit_success;
    fi
    fi
    done
    exit_failure_operation_impossible "no method available for opening '$1'"
    The browsers are defined later in the file:
    # if BROWSER variable is not set, check some well known browsers instead
    if [ x"$BROWSER" = x"" ]; then
    BROWSER=links2:links:lynx:w3m
    if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
    BROWSER=firefox:mozilla:epiphany:konqueror:chromium-browser:google-chrome:$BROWSER
    fi
    fi
    I am a rather novice user so I am not sure how to edit the file (if I even should) to make this work.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    EDIT: if i add "libreoffice:" to the end of the list of browsers it works like I would like it to.  This is obviously not the best method (I am not even certain why it is trying to open the file from other browsers, xdg-open file is quite intimidating) so any "better" suggestions would be very appreciated.

    run (in a terminal)

    If the command you want to use does not appear in the list select "Other..." and type the command you want. This command will become the default for opening file of the type <file>.

  • [Solved] Thunderbird can't open link in Firefox after update

    Today there were updates for Thunderbird and Firefox (and a few other). After that Thunderbird can't open links with Firefox. If I click on a link nothing happen. I started Thunderbird from terminal, and when I clicked on a link I got this message:
    ** (thunderbird-bin:6130): WARNING **: Could not launch default application for URI: Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/firefox-7.0/firefox" (No such file or directory)
    I checked /usr/lib and the folder for Firefox was directly under it, no folder "firefox-version" in between. I guess one must change the path somewhere for Thunderbird to find Firefox. Where to change that? I have looked both in the menus in Thunderbird, and in the Thunderbird folders in my home and in /usr/lib, but I  don't see the path to Firefox anywhere.

  • [Solved]Skype opens files in FireFox

    K0tuk wrote:Hm... the first solution doesn`t work for me, but the 2nd one does. Thanks for your help!
    I guess that the first solution does not work because you are not starting openbox-session but just bare openbox.
    The autostart.sh script is started by openbox-session command but not by openbox command.
    If you don't use gdm replace:
    exec openbox
    with
    exec openbox-session
    in your .xinitrc file and then also the first solution will work.
    The first solution is better because you can start skype from gmrun, launchy or by an icon launcher and it will always open your home folder with thunar.
    The alias skype='DE=xfce skype' works only if you start skype from bash.

  • Opening documents from internet explorer

    Hello Firends,
    "I´ve problem trying to open documents (odt, doc, xls, ...) with OpenOffice since Internet Explorer?? it takes forever to open, two minutes, however, if you open Firefox or from Windows Explorer opens at the same time.
    I tried it with Windows XP SP3, Internet Explorer 6 and later 8.
    This time, as I mentioned, is about two minutes, however, activating the QuickStart reduce opening times to 30 seconds, but still very slow. The problem is that I need to work well in Internet Explorer, so that I can not use Firefox or other browser.
    I've been mulling over a long time and I can not solve. The version used is 3.2 OpenOffice itself can be helpful.
    Thanks in advance for the input.
    Greetings!

    You have three variables: browser, open office, and document being opened.
    Assuming you are opening the same document to get your timing comparisons, we ca drop that as a variable
    For browser, you have either Firefox or IE. For document reader application you have open office.
    --------|--open office --
    firefox | fast
      IE    | slowConclusion, IE is slow. You may just have to live with it. (Or else buy a faster PC. That is what MS tools are good for, justifying PC upgrades. 8^)

  • How do you HYPERLINK a web page address to an EXCEL document in Firefox like is possible in Explorer

    How do you HYPERLINK a web page address to an EXCEL document in Firefox like is possible in Explorer?

    When you follow a hyperlink in Excel, usually it should open in your default browser. You shouldn't have to do anything special in Excel to create the link when Firefox is your default browser compared with IE. However, the Insert Hyperlink dialog might work differently. I think it might be able to automatically pre-populate a URL from IE, while in Firefox, you need to copy the URL from Firefox's address bar and paste it into the Insert Link dialog.

  • Open document opens new Window in IE which is in front, then back, front

    Hello we have here the following Situation.
    We have a big XI 3.1 Business Objects Platform running.
    Also we have in our company net a portal in which the users can open reports from our BO platform.
    This is done by usercustomized open document urls.
    That al works fine.
    Thing is, when a user requests the report, the Internet Explorer opens a new window which is blank. The Window can be seen for a second. Then the new window goes to the background behind the current window. After several seconds when in the new window the report starts to regenerate itself the window goes back to the front and the report is displayed.
    And that behaviour confuses our user quite a lot.
    The behaviour can be seen in IE 6 and 8. Firefox does not show this behavior.
    IE9 wasn't tested.
    So, does anyone know if there is an IE setting, or part of the Open document url which can change the behavior so that the new indow just apears and then stay apeared?
    Changing the browser to firefox or IE9 is not an option because we are talking about 30k pc-clients.

    Here is an example URL. I have made the servername and parameters in italics.
    Im not responsible for the deployment of the war files. But it was seen that after the update of the SP3 old opendoc syntax caused problems in other opendoc calls and was changed. So I assume that the war was deployed.
    https://*serverurl*/OpenDocument/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?token=*servername:port*@*something-something*&sWindow=New&reportType=FullClient&ls*Parameter1*=*parameterstring*;&iDocID=*IdocID of the Report*&sWindow=Same
    Actually after seeing the opendoc-string im surprised of the double use of the &sWindow parameter.
