Opening Docx files in Pages 09?

I have two machines, both running Pages '09. One is running on Snow Leopard (Pages v4.0) and the other Mountain Lion (Pages v4.3). One will open .doc and  .docx files the other will not (same files). I have read lots of posts suggesting both ought to be able to open the files, but I have failed to get the earlier version to open them.
I gather that Snow Leopard could be running a later version 4.04? But my machine assures me that the software is up to date. The installation is in a subfolder called iWork '09 in the Apps folder.
I cannot upgrade OSX to Lion or later because I am running FCP Studio 2 and it will not run under later operating systems.
Any suggestions as to what I need to do to get the Snow Leopard machine to open the files?
Thanking you in advance!

You can find the 4.0.4 version here iWork 9.0.4. Make sure you save the download or future use. You never know when it will not be accessible anymore.
If this doesn't work I would suggest that you reinstall Snow Leopard. You don't need to uninstall or erase the system, just install on top of what you have. Do the updates through Software updates. I once had to do that and it worked fine.

  • I am not able to open docx files

I have some docx files (on dvd) from days gone by (good-bye to Windows&Word), and I can't get Pages '09 to open them. It just stalls, it has the progress bar and the beach ball is spinning, but nothing happens. I have to go to the dock and force quit.
I've read in the forums of other people opening docx files, what am I doing wrong? some of these are not complicated files, one page of text and such. only some do have clipart, but that's about it.
is there some setting I could check??
*Did some more testing. These files were copied to my desktop, and I was clicking and right-clicking and opening them from the desktop. And, Pages would not open them. I then opened Pages and chose File, Open and opened them from within Pages, and just like that they open! only errors are missing font errors. Why would Pages have this behavior? What's so different about opening them by clicking on them or right-clicking Open??
Well, at least I got them open. maybe this will help someone else.
    thanks

Okay, I never really found an answer, but at this point Pages is opening when I click on docx files.
Here's what I did and found out:
FIRST, thank you to all the suggestions and thoughts! Most of them I had already tried, but this is what the forum is for, and most of the time it's what solves things for me, so a big thank you!
I tried deleting the plist and cache files for Pages. (I use TinkerTool) That did not help, problem still existed. So I completely deleted/uninstalled Pages (TinkerTool). - I always try rebooting between troubleshooting - Then re-installed Pages, and tested before I made any changes/customizations. Here's where I saw a ray of hope; it worked! So then I made a few customizations, minor ones, such as which template, zoom size, ruler, etc. Then exit Pages. Try from opening docx from desktop...spinning ball again.
At that point, I decided to go as fruhulda mentioned and reinstall the OS. I always do regular backups and Time Machine is going, but I looked around and backed up some stuff. Was not exited about having to reinstall all my software, but it bugs me when something is not working as intended (what else could be goofy in the background?). After reinstalling OS and downloading any updates, first thing I installed was iWorks. Tested opening docx, issue gone! Did some Pages customizations, and tried again...still working. Add a personal template for Pages to open with, and tested again...still working.
As I go through and add my applications and customizations, I stop briefly and test Pages with docx files, so far it continues to open.
There must have been some file(s) somewhere in the system or system library that was messing with Pages. It's the kind of thing you never find out. However, fresh and clean did the trick.
Again, thank you to all who read and posted; I appreciate it all!
    Linda

  • Hi guys i m new as my name suggest could anybody tell me how to open .docx files on my macbook os x 10.7.4 thnx

hi  i am a newbie   can anybody tell me how to open .docx files on macbook pro 10.7.4

Ideally, you need software like Microsoft Word (Office), or Open Office, or NeoOffice, or LibreOffice, or Pages, etc.
TextEdit or Preview (applications folder) can usually view them, though not always perfectly.

  • Having problem opening .docx files

I was mailed a .docx file of lables for my work.  I need to print these off, but when I open in Pages, the format is all messed up.
Any suggestions on how to get these to import into pages so I do not have to print from a windows machine?
    Thanks,
    Mark

I have and would suggest you install LibreOffice v4.0 for those moments like this when you really need to open a .docx file, and Pages is incooperative. It will also handle Visio documents all the way back to 1992 and MS Publisher documents back to the beginning as well. Free.

  • I can no longer open .doc files with pages 5

    hi,
whenever I click on a .doc document pages tells me that:
    "Pages doesn’t support RTF files."
this is very annoying and complicates everyday exchange with colleges,
does anyone has an idea how to solve that? make pages open .doc?
    best,
    jakob

The weird thing is that it was a .doc file (I suspect an older version is what has caused that error) and not .rtf... I tried to open the same document with the older version of pages, which worked fine.
No, I can assure you it was an RTF file.  The fact that the filename ended ".doc" is irrelevant and certainly does not make a file a Microsoft Word document.  The filename is irrelevant, and the file content is what's critical.  For example, I could take a .mp3 music file, and then rename it "Presentation.doc".  You would not be able to open this in any word processing software on any operating system.
Also remember that having files end with ".xxx", although a requirement in Microsoft Windows is completely optional in other operating systems like OS X and Linux.  Files do not have to have "extensions" at all.
    You have two options:
    1.  Rename the file, removing the ".doc" part.  Now when you open in Finder, it will automatically open with Text Edit, which is OS X's RTF editor.  If you absolutely must cling to Windows conventions, you could set the extension as ".rtf" - it makes no difference, as Finder uses the file content format to detemine the best program to use.
    2.  If you do have Microsoft Word available (either on Windows or Mac), open the .doc file in Word, choose "save as..", change the document type from RTF to the Word ".doc" format, ignore the warning informing you that you are changing the format, and then Save.  Now you can open the file in Pages.
    Hope this helps.

  • [SOLVED] Libre Office Writer 4.2.3 freezes trying to open docx file

After the upgrade of the Libre Office suite from 4.2.2 to 4.2.3, I cannot open docx files - the UI freezes with no response to keyboard or mouse.
Downgrading all libreoffice-* packages to 4.2.2-5 allows Writer to open the files once again correctly.
The only other issue I've seen on the forum is related to a dependency on gstreamer-0.10, but since I'm able to install all 4.2.3 packages I assume it's not that causing this problems.
    Anyone else having similar problems?

  • Opening .docx files

Does anyone know how to open .docx files? I am running 10.4.11 and use Microsoft Office for Mac for word processing. Generally it is no problem for me to use Word to open .doc files that are emailed to me, but I can't seem to open .docx files. I've tried opening these files in both Word and text editor, but neither works. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks very much.

Use this tool, Microsoft Office 2008, or iWork 08 to open them.

  • Problem opening .doc files in pages/.xls files in numbers...

My hard drive recently failed and has been replaced.  Since the new hard drive was installed, I am unable to open .doc files with pages or .xls files with numbers.  I never had this problem before.

    I have I-work 09 [Pages 4.0 (727)]
This is the same version I had before (I think) -- At the Apple Store they used a new I-Work disc to install it onto the new hard drive.
I hope someone can help with this!
    Thank you!

  • Microsoft Word won't open .docx files.

I cannot get Microsoft Word to open .docx files.

Since it's happening in Guest, it's possible the keyboard plist is also affecting Guest, but normally plist files are only for a specific user. However since this is hardware, I'm not sure.
Let's try some general troubleshooting steps:
Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in Recovery.
See steps here to reset YOUR permissions while in Recovery drive.**
    Restart
Download and run the combo updater to refresh your OS X files.

  • When opening DOCX files the filename is appended with .DOC extension and fail to open in Word

When trying to open DOCX files Firefox appends a ".DOC" to the end of them and then Word fails to open them saying "Word cannot start the converter mswrd632.wpc" (using Office 2003 with the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack) - however if I SAVE the file first it saves fine as a DOCX and opens fine in Word.
    Any ideas please?

What's happening here is that Firefox sees the mime type for the application (application/msword) and identifies it as a Word document. However, FF doesn't recognize the new(ish) docx extentions, and appends the .doc .
Now, when FF hands the file off to Word for Word to open, Word only looks at the extension (.doc) and tries to open the file as if it were of the older format.
I don't experience this problem myself with the default settings after installation, I'm going to assume that something's been tweaked in your FF installation. I would recommend checking your settings in Tools > Options > Applications
