Opening earlier CS docs in CS5 (Apple Mac)

Whatever method I use, I cannot find any way to open earlier CS4 documents in the up-to-date CS5 (7.0.3) that I'm actually running right now. That includes resaving the earlier CS4 doc as an .imdl doc in the hope that my CS5 would then be able to open it (though that method is what I'd normally use for back-saving, not 'forward-saving'). This issue has been raised a number of times elsewhere on the Internet, but I've not found anyone who has come up with a work-around that actually works. These include such methods as dumping the Preferences, or making sure the file name doesn't exceed a certain number of characters, etc, etc. On the other hand, many CS5 users swear they've had no difficulty whatsoever opening earlier CS4 docs, simply by double-clicking on them in the normal way.
Is there something I need to do to my own CS5 to enable it to open earlier CS documents? I note the distinction between CS versions and simple ID versions - the earlier documents I'm trying to open are definitely CS. I'm using an Intel dual-core iMac running 10.6.6.

Oh, and I don't know how to attach the CS4 file for testing when using this forum. I only joined two hours ago!
Use a file service such as yousendit or dropbox or megaupload. I always recommend dropbox because you don't give people annoying massive blocks of ads or a 30 second wait time. Attachments have been temporarily disabled on this board for months and months.

If you have not already done so, repair permissions and restart your computer. Or boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu. When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer. Suggest that you post in the Microsoft Office for Mac Forums if the above does not work.

If you still have a working copy of Pages ’08, then save the Pages documents out as .doc Word files and open those in Pages v5.5.2. If you do not have a machine to run Pages '08 on, but still have the iWork '08 DVD, you can install that on Yosemite, and then update Pages '08 to version 3.0.3. Then export the Pages documents to Word. Or you can simply avoid using Pages v5.5.2 altogether, as it has a fraction of the capability found in Pages '08.

Opening a CS4 doc in CS5

I have a document last worked on in CS4, which I now can't open in CS5. It's saying I don't have the
updated plugins for a number of rpln plug ins. Any ideas how I can resolve this. Urgent.....

It sounds as though the file may be corrupted, do you know if it opens correctly in CS4?
If you open it CS4 you could try saving the file as IDML (Indesign mark up language) and opening that in CS5
I'm sure you've tried this already, but if you have another copy of CS5 try using that as it may be the preferences or core files that are corrupted.
If it opens in CS4 but not CS5 i would reinstall CS5 and do an Adobe update as this will replace any corrupt plug ins.

Apple mac cannot open InDesign document I sent

Hi, A friend created an InDesign document on an Apple Mac, sent it to me. I opened it on a PC running InDesign (64 bit) V9.0. I was able to make a lot of changes. When I sent the document back they were unable to open it. I don't understand how that is possible. Isn't the indd format defined such that both PC's and Mac's can work with the documents. Can anyone help?

It almost surely means that they don't have InDesign CC 9.0 (your version). They have an earlier version. Save it as an INDL file.

You can’t. You have upgrade or have whoever is send you files save as IDML. Don’t expect perfection.

Raw support is version specific. There is no way to simply force install a new version of ACR into an older Photoshop. You need to consider upgrading or use the DNG converter.

The D610 didn't get out-of-the-box RAW support until Photoshop CC.
You can either upgrade to CC or use the DNG Converter to convert and open your DNGs in CS5.

File size variations in Cs5, Bridge, & Mac when opening D800e raw files

I am getting extreme variations in file size when I open my D800e nefs in photoshop cs5, & Bridge. When I highlight the same nefs on my Mac(10.6.8) & "get info", I get another file size. D800e files are about 103 MB each at 8 bit, but can vary dramatically when I open them in Bridge or Cs5. Any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you for responding. I understand what you are saying. After more attempts at resizing nef files into tifs, and then restarting my computer, everything seems to be ok. However, when I make a four shot stitched pan with the D800e, I encounter the same problem even after downsizing to a more manageble file size. Each photo in the pan is originally 103MB. After resizing the 4 shots to 30MB each, I end up with a pan that is about 75MB in CS5 after cropping. When I highlight this pan & "get info" on my Mac desktop, the image size is 300-400 MB. I can ignore this for personal use, but if I have to send it to a client via the internet its a problem. I have made stitched pans with my D3s with no problem at all, so I guessing I have to switch cameras when I want to stitch shots together. If anyone has any more comments feel free!

What program did you use prior to the updade? Did you updrde that program when you updaded the OS?

Uhhhhh... Thank GOD... Got all of my files.
Spent some time on the phone with Apple Care... who was great to deal with but actually... not as helpful as I was hoping. It was suggested that I try DiskWarrior 4 to try to recover the files. $108 later, I had no files.
More calls with Apple Care and they were pretty sure that everything was gone since once the External drive was installed, like a moron, I let TimeMachine go ahead and back up my new MacBook... so it overwrote who knows how many gig that was my entire MacBook.
I wasn't giving up so I called Maxtor, the manufacturer of the external drive itself. They suggested file recovery software from I365... which is also a Seagate company (the makers of the drive). The suggested I simply use their demo because the demo version would find the files. If it found them, I could buy the software to restore them.
It found them! Another $129 after and I was able to restore all of them back to my old PC laptop.
NOW, I just need to figure out how to get the 50gig of HD video files off of my old laptop now and into my Mac and IMovie so I can actually make some DVDs out of them!
I get that Macs and PCs are different formats but I think it is ridiculous that formatting still means basically just wiping out or at least treating massive lots of old data as if it isn't there. There's gotta be a better way to do that.
