Opening Excel Attachments

When I open an Excel attachment the file will automatically open in AppleWorks. How do I set a default so that the Excel document opens in Excel or Numbers?

Drag the attachment to your Desktop. Select it and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the section labeled Open With select Excel or Numbers from the drop down menu, then click on the Change All button.

  • Can't open Excel attachments

After upgrading to Lion, any Excel attachments I receive from a windows machine will not open. Previously under Snow Leopard I was using an older version of Excel and never had any problems.
Since upgrading to Lion, I've taken to editing a document in Numbers, saving it as an Excel file and mailing it to a windows user as a windows safe attachment. The Windows user can open and edit it but I cannot open the edited file they return to me. Interestingly a friend's Windows pc has no trouble reading the attachment.
Does this sound like a Lion problem, or is there something on the Windows side causing problems?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pelennor

Hi! Thanks for your response, but I'm not trying to open the file in Excel. I guess the question is whether Numbers can open up an excel file (.xls). The workflow is:
    1- create file in Numbers
2 - save file as an excel file (.xls)
3 - email file to partner as a Windows safe attachment
4 - partner updates file in Excel and sends updated file back to me
It's at this point where the problem occurs. I try to open the updated file and I can't. Numbers doesn't recognize it, yet a friend's Windows PC has no trouble. It's as if there's some kind of encryption occurring in step 4 that makes the file unreadable on the Mac.
I hope this clarifies the problem.
    Again thanks for responding!

  • Unable to open Excel attachments in Outlook 2013

    Office 2013 32 bit, Windows 7 64 bit
it used to work when it was newly installed. users can open Excel attachment from within Outlook.
now nothing happens. the only thing they can do is to "save as".
I have tried what is suggested here
    http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/158/t/210923.aspx but still no go.
do I need to reinstall Office 2013?

    Hi,
Some other things you can try:
Go into Excel Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> External Content
    Enable both.
Then Excel Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Macro Settings
Enable all macros, trust access to the VBA project object model.
Then Excel Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> ActiveX Settings
    Set to Enable or Prompt.
Then Excel Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Privacy Options
Untick the box next to "Check Microsoft Office documents that are from or link to suspicious Web sites".
You can try these above and let me know the result.

  • Unwanted prefix of "Copy of " added to file name of opened Excel attachments

How can I stop the prefix of "Copy of " from being added to the file name when I save an Excel file that was mailed as an attachment?
It is very annoying to have to keep deleting that unwanted addition to my filenames.

    1) Don't open attachments - save them first and then open them.
    2) You can use this code in the ThisWorkbook object of your Personal.xls:
    Private WithEvents App As Application
Private Sub App_WorkbookBeforeSave(ByVal Wb As Workbook, ByVal SaveAsUI As Boolean, Cancel As Boolean)
        If InStr(1, Wb.Name, "Copy of ") = 1 Then
            Application.EnableEvents = False
            Cancel = True
            Wb.SaveAs Replace(Wb.FullName, "Copy of ", "")
            Application.EnableEvents = True
        End If
    End Sub
    Private Sub Workbook_Open()
        Set App = Application
    End Sub

  • Outlook 2010 opening excel files in grey exel sheet/not correctly

    Hi,
i have a user with a brand new install of Windows 7 64X and Office 2010 32X. The user is having the issue of when trying to open excel spread sheets from outlook that they open in a grey window and nothing in it. See attachedpicture
The user can preview the file fine in outlook, and if they save the file and open it it works fine. but when trying to open directly from outlook it opens in a grey window.
I have tired disabling all protected views in excel and word. i have removed all add ons from excel and outlook. and have run outlook in safe mode and still same results.
i have repaired office, and removed it and reinstalled it to no luck. I have found a work around, if i get outlook to start as "Run as administrator" then its works.
Any Help i would be greatful
    Kind Regards
    SF

    Hi,
The most common cause is that Excel has been configured to ignore other applications. This is an option that is disabled by default but can be enabled to isolate the Excel working environment. When the option is enabled, you can only open Excel attachments
    from within Excel itself.
To disable this option you can do the following:
Open Excel, click File -> Options -> Advanced-> General -> Untick "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" -> OK.
After setting this option, close Excel. Open the attachment in Outlook to check the result.

  • Can no longer open Excel spreadsheets attachments.

I have recently upgraded to iOS 5 on my iphone4 and 3GS and can no longer open Excel spreadsheets attachments from my Hotmail. They come up as an E (which I think is Evernote). I don't want to use Evernote, I just want to view them as I could before. Even simple spreadsheets come as this annoying E when I try to open them. Everything worked fine before I did the iOS 5 upgrade and went with the cloud. I've no idea how to this happend or how to solve it.
    Can anyone please help?
    Regards
    Pickers120

Generally if this happens the thing I have found to do is to quit the application and then restart the application by clicking on one of the files (like the ones in your documnets folder), not by starting the application and using the open command. Doing this immediately will usually solve the problem.
This could also be an indication of some sort of file or disk corruption so I would recommend that you not only check the disk using Disk Utility from the CD but also checking your disk permissions just to be sure. Instructions for doing so can be found in steps one and two here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
If the first two steps don't solve the problem then you might as well go to step three, otherwise stop with one and two.
If you have backups and cannot get the files to open then your only other choice will be to restore from the backup copies. Either way I would make sure that my disk was healthy, by following the above noted steps, before doing the restore, otherwise you may corrupt the restored copy.
Good Luck and let us know if this helps!!

  • Outlook 2013 won't open Word and Excel attachments

Had a new PC set up with MS Office 2013 programs.  Outlook 2013 Word and Excel attachments do not open.  Program opens, but to a blank screen.  This includes my attachments created on the same computer.  Boxes in "Trust Center"
are unchecked.  Problem persists.  It is possible to save the attachment, then open Word or Excel and see the saved file, but this is time consuming and annoying.  Outlook 2013 should just open its attachments from the message without a thousand
    extra steps.  Thank you.

    Hi Gish,
    Thank you for your question.
Did this issue occur in OWA?
We could open outlook->File->option->Trust Center ->Microsoft Outlook Trust Center->Trust Center Setting->Attachment Handing->Attachment and Document Preview…
Then we make sure all option have check. And didn’t uncheck “Turn off Attachment Preview”, or rebuild the profile to check if the issue persist.
If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.
    Best Regard,

  • Can´t open word or excel attachments on mail

I was working perfecty but after istalling Virus Barrier express for Mac and made a scan, now I can´t open any attachments that I opened before.

I am also having this issue. When I try to make my mapped drive, in my case it is the S: drive, the trust center does not allow me to make that drive trusted. I also tried to make a specific folder on that drive trusted with the same denial. When I copy
a specific document to a local drive, like the desktop, then I can open the document. Another computer on the network running the same Windows 8.1 OS and same version of Microsoft Office products does not have this issue. On that computer, I can save and open
documents directly from the mapped network folder.

  • How to list all currently open Excel files with ActiveX?

    Hello all!
I would like to program with ActiveX a way to retrieve a list (array of strings) of the filenames of the currently opened Excel files in windows. However, I am fairly new to the ActiveX/Excel business in LV and after hours looking at the "millions" of objects in the property nodes I give up and hope some kind soul here can help me. I couldn't find any information in this forum regarding the same issue, although some were close
I am using LV 7.1 without the Report Generation Toolkit.
    Thanks!
    /Goran

    Hi KC,
thanks for your reply. I have in fact been able to find the desired things in the ActiveX properties/methods for Excel in LabView. It took me some looong work going through the functions which I suspected to be the ones. Anyway, I post a little jpeg here of the code if someone ever needs the same functionality. What it does is that it checks how many Excel workbooks are open and controls if each of them matches the searched Excel filename, if one does, it is closed.
    Enjoy
    /Goran

  • Opening email attachments created by microsoft

first week with ibook going smooth but minor problem can't open email attachments created by microsoft word or excel, any suggestions would help

    camryn,
Since your iBook is new you may have a trial version of Pages and Office 2004. It may have also come with AppleWorks.
    Look in your Applications folder.
If you have any of these programs control click on the attachment and >open with, Navigate to said program.
Pages does agood job of opening Word files, AppleWorks is IMHO not so good. I'm not sure about the Excel files, maybe someone else can offer more on that.
You can go here to check other alterntives:

  • Can't preview Excel attachments in iOS8

We have several users who can't preview Excel attachments in e-mail on their iPhones . I've seen this happen with users with iPhone 4Ss to iPhone 6+'s. They all have iOS8, including the most recent update.
The device tries to open the attachment: you see the spinning wheel for a few seconds, then just shows the name and file type.
I've tried saving the file as an older xls file, or a newer xlsx file (new up to Excel 2010: haven't been able to test with 2013). I've tried removing worksheets, reformatting the file. It does not work.
The files will open in Numbers or Documents to Go on the device. It is only in the mail preview it does not open.
It happens in e-mail from an Exchange server, GMail or AOL.
I do see that it creates an error log. Under the Diagnostics and Usage log, there is a log file called quicklookd_DATE_TIME added and the file LatestCrash_quicklookd.ips is updated each time I open these. I'm not sure how to find the error in here, but the Exception Type is EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT).
I've seen some posts about downloading full messages to solve this, but as far as I can tell they are downloaded.

Yes, it can't be opened as an attachment.

  • Can't open Excel attachments

I have curve 8330.  My boss sends me emails with excel attachments and I can't open them.  I keep getting a message that says "password not supported for this format".  Any ideas how to fix this?  I've had the phone for about a month and it's been like this since I got it.

What OS do you have on the BB? If it's 4.5, you should have the Documents To Go app, which will allow you to open Exel files.

  • New win 7 office 2010 upgrade won't open emailed attachments

after upgrading a system from vista/office xp to win7/office2010, emailed attachments wont open in word or excel("corrupt file error") from outlook mailbox. when retrieving the same emails from a webmail application, attachments wont open if retrieved
by IE, but will open properly if retreived by firefox. I suspect some kind of permissions/protection problem rather than the "corrupt file" error message I'm getting, but can't identify the source of the problem.

    Hi,
Thank you for contacting Outlook IT Pro Discussions Services.
From your description, I understand that after upgrading the system to Windows 7 and installing Office 2010, you are unable to open the attachments in Outlook, and
receive an error “corrupted file”. When trying to open the same email message in the Web Email application by using IE, the attachment cannot open. However, it can be open if you are using Firefox. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel
    free to let me know.
Before we go further, I would like to confirm if this issue only occurs with the Word or Excel attachment. Can you open other types of attachments, such as notepad?
If this issue only occurs with the Word or Excel file, this issue can occur when the file association of the Word or Excel file is wrong or missing. Let’s try
the steps below to re-associate the Word and Excel file:
    =============
    1.
    Please go to
    Start \Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations.
    2.
Locate the files .doc, .docm,.docx, .dot, .dotm, check if there are associated with
Microsoft Word. If not, highlight the file and click the
Change Program button. Choose Microsoft Word from the list. If you are unable to see Microsoft Word from the list, click the
Browse button. Browse to the folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14, and choose
    Word.exe.
    3.
    Click
    OK to save the settings.
    4.
Similar steps to locate the files .xls, .xlsm, .xlsx. Make sure they are associated to Microsoft Excel.
Check the results again. If the problem persists, please also reset the IE settings and set IE as the default browser.
    ============
    1.
    Start Internet Explorer.
    2.
    On the
    Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3.
    On the
    Advanced tab, click Reset.
    4.
    In the
Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.
    5.
    Click the
Program tab. Then, click Set your default programs.
    6.
    Highlight
    Internet Explorer on the left.
    7.
    Click
    Set this program as default.
    8.
    Click
    OK.
Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for
you, please feel free to let me know.
