Opening exe files on a Mac (OS X mountain lion)

Hello,
I need to open exe files on my Macbook pro currently on the OS X Mountain Lion. I can't figure out how to open them, I know there are ways but I cant seem to find one that works. I would prefer one that is COMPLETELY free. Please respond ASAP!
Thanks!

Well, if is a not to complex application that doesn't need a lot of resources, you may be lucky and be able to create a Mac version by encapsulating it in WINE with WineBottler: http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/
Beware, Mac & Windows savvyness required. Not Plug & Play. But it IS free....

How do I open .exe files on my mac? I've downloaded a bunch of programs but they are all in .exe format. Do I need a program to extract these files?

Ok thanks. So how do you install programs that you download from the internet? I've downloaded some programs and when I try to install them it doesn't work.
First of all, you need to download things that are built to run on OS X - there is no way to install any Windows program in OS X.  You need windows to run Windows programs.
Most downloadable programs for OS X will be distributed in a Disc Image file - *.dmg  You would double click one to open it.  Then, often it is as simple as drag the uncompressed folder to your Applications Folder.  Sometimes there may be an installer to run.  Once installed, you can eject the mounted dmg (drag it to the trash) and either keep is in case you ever need to reinstall, or delete it.

  • How can I open .exe files on my mac?

I have been sent a coule of tese files and eah time my mac is trying to open them with quick time. what should i be opening them with so they are usable?

An .exe file is a Windows application/program. You can't "open" them. You would have to have Windows installed in order to use them.
The only exception being if the file is a .zip archive that was created as, or converted to a self extracting file. Those also appear with the .exe extension. In which case, the free Stuffit Expander can open them.

  • Opening .exe files/Converting video format

Is there a way to open .exe files on my MacBookPro? (There is no virtually pc emulator for the MbookP, yet). Also, what I am trying to do is convert music video files that I downloaded to .mp4 file format so I can watch them on my iPod....Unfortunately I have no clue what I am doing, and I don't know of any freeware. If you know how to do this-Post!

You can open .exe files on intel mac by booting into windows XP but that would involve using bootcamp
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
    or virtualisation

If music videos play in your browser you can capture them using snapzpro

  • Opening a .EXE file on a Mac?

Is there any way to to pen up a file published as an .EXE file on a Mac?

The file was made in the PC version of Captivate and the published file has an .EXE suffix on it. I did try changing the suffix to .app but that didn't work either. Is there any way to open the file up in the Mac version of Captivate?

I have using Mac OS 10.9.2

Try running it through WineSkin or CrossOver Mac, or installing Windows through VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, Boot Camp, or similar software.

  • Opening .exe files

Sorry if this question has been asked before!
I'm using a MacBook and I'm having trouble opening files that are in .exe format. I do have MacLinkPlus but this program doesn't seem to be able to convert the file. Is there another way that I can open .exe files?
    Thanks!
    Tam

If there is a program you need to run and don't want to install a full Windows OS (via Parallels, Fusion or BootCamp) you may want to see if CrossOver Mac supports it.

  • What is the best way to run .exe files on my mac?

What is the best way to run .exe files on my mac? I need to run some updates for my john deere gps and the downloads i get can only be run on windows.

There are several options for running Windows software (*.exe files) on a Mac, depending what your program is, how often you use it, and your personal preferences.
One way that does not require Windows is an open source effort called WINE.  Check out winehq.org.  You may find that that's all you need for your programs.  There is also a commercial effort that has grown from WINE, and you will find info about it on the site mentioned.  These DO NOT require that you have and install Windows.
If you want to run sessions devoted only to Windows software, and want programs to run as fast as they do on a PC, the Apple's Bootcamp program is useful.  With it you dedicate a partition on your hard disk to windows, and on startup choose to either boot into OS X or Windows.  Each runs without any connection to the other.  This requires you have a copy of the Windows software as well as the applications you want to run.
If you want to be able to easily exchange data between your Windows and Mac programs, and skip back and forth between the two, there are several emulators available that run on Mac OS X and create a Windows environment where many Windows programs can operate along side Mac programs.  Parallels and VMwear are two comercial packages available for purchase and Virtual Box is an open source effort available for free.  Google will find all three for you.
My only experience is with Virtual Box.  It is slow and a bit clunky, but it is free and meets my needs for the very few "just got to have" windows programs I sometimes use.
Google is your friend on this and can provide a lot more, and better, information than I can.
    Best of luck,
    Ray

  • Opening exe file

How do I open an exe file on my mac? Do I have to download a Windows program? I need an easy way to do this......its not a big file like a game.

A .exe file is a windows executable file.
You need to open it within the windows operating system or its equivalent.

All Office applications will also try to open a temporary work file in the same location as the source file. This implies the source file directory also needs to be writable for this temporary file. Since the default HFS+ driver provides only read-only access, such temporary files will fail to open, and will cause the application to fail.
As a test copy the file you want to edit, say an Excel spreadsheet from the OSX file system to the C: drive on the Windows side and try to open it. If you look in this directory, you should see two files, the source and a temporary file. You may have to force the temporary file to be opened on a read-write file system, by manipulating the folder for temporary files.

Need help very badly since the hard drive I use is the only back up I have for my very old pics. Thank you...

Backup with cloning software your HD to have an exact copy of it as it is.
Use this methodology to recover your partition.

  • .exe files appearing on MAC in mixed network environment

I am working in a mixed PC/Mac network environment. Soon after plugging the MAC into the network, I started noticing '.exe' file appearing on my MAC.
Almost every folder on the HD now has a .exe file with the same name inside it. For example the Libray folder has a file called "Library.exe" in it now.
I have one folder on the MAC shared, and mapped as a network drive on a PC. The PC's anti-virus software keeps flagging a virus on the folder. However, I am running Intego's anti-virus on the MAC and it does not find anything.
    Anyone have any ideas here?

Finally figured it out... PC Network volume (shared folder) had the W32.rontokbro@mm virus. EXE file appeared anytime the PC connected to the MAC. Reformatted the PC and deleted all of the EXE files from the MAC and now I have no troubles.
