Opening FCP file in an older version of FCP

I'm trying to open an FCP file sent to me and I'm getting a "General Error (41)" message every time that prevents me from opening the file. I have a feeling it's because the FCP file was created in a newer version of FCP. I'm running FCP 5.0. Is there any way you can save a file in FCP 7.0 (for example) so it can open in FCP 5.0?

The person who sent you the file has to instead send you an XML file of the project. 5.0 I believe needs an XML 2. When you ask them to do it, make sure that the browser window is selected, and NOTHING in the browser is selected (highlighted.) Otherwise you only get an xml of that one thing.
If you type xml files into the search window of this forum, you'll find a little chart of the fcp versions and the applicable XML's for each.

  • Opening FCP file in an older version

I have been working on a final cu pro project on a different computer, this computer had FInal cut pro version 10 I do believe. The computer i am currently on has version 7. I have my project uploaded onto the computer however it will not let me open the file in FCP 7. Is there anything I can do, to continue to work on this project on this computer?

The only way this can work is to use the Xto7 utility. You'll need to export and XML from FCP, take it to the Xto7 utility and convert the XML to a format that can be imported into FCP7.

  • Trying to open a file from an older version to a new version of indesign

I'm on am mac and i am trying to open a file from the 2014 indesign with 2015 software, i am getting this error:
what i don't understand is why a newer version can't read the file of an older version

That is exactly the opposition of what you are trying to tell us.
    Correct is:
You have Adobe CS6, version 8.x.
You get a file from someone else, who has Adobe CC 2014, version 10.x.
You are trying to open that file on your computer.
But because that file was created in a later version, you get this message.
Either ask to get an IDML file (with a PDF), tell them, they should go to File > Package… and check IDML and PDF export.
Better would be, if you also subscribe to the Creative Cloud to be up to date with the latest version.
But what you should do anyway, update your InDesign CS6, as there are updates available which will correct this error message, as from CS7 upwards no CS exists anymore.

  • Opening up a FCP project in an older version of FCP

I started working on a project in FCP 7 and now I have to finish it in an older FCP! Is there anyway to do this without recapturing the whole thing??? Any advice/help would be appreciated! thank you!

I'm not kidding. It's easier and cheaper to upgrade the other machine.

  • Export for older version of FCP and QT

I exported a Motion project to a QT file for a client in the DV format and they are unable to open it. I know they have an older version of FCP and QT so is there a way I can save it differently, maybe in Compressor?
I am using FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.3.1.
    Thanks...

Your first move would be to ask them what version of QT they have.
Then choose a matching compression profile in Compressor.
That said if the file you are sending them is a straightforward QT PAL/NTSC DV file from FCP there is no logical reason why they cannot open it.
How are you giving it to them on disk, via the web ?

  • Open Pages documents from an older version

I need to open Pages documents from an older version of Pages that I saved to an external drive from a computer that I no longer have access to.  My current operating system is 10.7.5 and I can't upgrade it right now.  I see that Pages 5.0 requires 10.10 or higher and I can't find older versions to download and from what I've read, it doesn't sound like I'd be able to open the old documents with the new version anyway.  I really need these documents. What can I do?

I found it helpful to convert all my old Pages '08 files to .doc files.  They can be opened by the new version of Pages.
Since the new version of Pages is no longer back compatible, and so not good for anything you want to keep for a long time, you might consider using an open source word processing application like Libra Office.  That's what I had to do.  After seven years of being a happy Pages user - archiving thousands of files in Pages -Apple has abandoned us.  I no longer think it is wise to use the new Pages and then five years down the road (or sooner) not to be able to open them in a newer version.
If you would like a quick way to convert your Pages '08 files to .doc, let me know.

My Safari will not allow me to open my Google calendar with Google Apps. I have to open my email with the older version of Google Apps. This happened after I installed 5.1.4. I tried to use the fix of changing to 64 bit by unchecking the 32 bit box but that didnt help.

I assume that there are legal restrictions on the way in which iTunes can get artwork automatically from any source apart from the iTunes Store (which is what the right-click > Get Album Artwork function uses).  For example, even though the Gracenote service that iTunes uses to match CDs and retrieve metadata (artist, album, track titles, etc.) also has artwork functions, iTunes does not make use of these.
For manual addition of artwork, there are three cases where the image you select may not be correctly embedded in your media files:
your media are in a format that doesn't accommodate embedded artwork - typically WAV files.  To embed artwork you'll need to convert to another format - Apple Lossless or AIFF if you want to preserve lossless quality, AAC or MP3 otherwise.
your media files are read only - to fix this, use Windows Explorer to find the folder that contains your files, right-click and select Properties.  On the General tab there's a check box labeled "Read-only" - if this is checked, or is grey (sometimes blue), click the box so that the flag is unchecked and the box is white.  Click OK, and then OK again when the "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" option selected.  Now try adding the artwork again.
Windows permissions issues are preventing iTunes from updating your media files (there's some anecdotal evidence of a change in this behavior in iTunes 12).  See turingtest2's notes on Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for advice on fixing this, then try adding the artwork again.

Can you transfer picture files from an older version of aperture to aperture 3?

Well, you didn't give any information on your Mac, your OS version, transfer pics from where to where, or anything else, so guessing is the best anyone can do at this point: you should be able to simply using drag and drop.

How do I upgrade the plugins needed for my earlier version of InDesign CS5 so I can open a file in a later version of CS5?

You can’t. You have upgrade or have whoever is send you files save as IDML. Don’t expect perfection.

  • HT202879 How can I open a file made with old version of Pages (before 09)?

I need to open a file made with old version of Pages (before 09).  How can I do this?  I only have iworks Pages free with Mac Book Pro.

You need either Pages '09 or the original Pages '08? programs.
With Pages '09 you simply open it and it accurate converts it to Pages '09. Pages 5 will open the Pages '09 version but may alter/damage the file.
With Pages '08 you Export it to Word .doc/.docx with mixed results, then open that in Pages 5 which may alter/damage the file.

With Java 6 and prior, you had to enable logging first before you could view error messages in Console.  I am guessing that you need to check the Java Control Panel to see if logging is turned on.

How do I re-save an Illustrator file back to an older version, if I can't open the file because I don't have the newer version it was created in (besides the obvious of purchasing the newer version).

  • App.open options when opening a newer version photoshop file by an older version of photoshop, App.open options when opening a newer version photoshop file by an older version of photoshop

So, where I work, we have a script that handles all of our heavy lifting.  This script is running on CS6, and all of the users are running CC 2014.  Now when the CS6 machine opens a document with any type of vector object from CC 2014 it throws a dialog box asking if I want to flatten, cancel, or Keep layers.  I do have DISPLAYDIALOGS.NO set at the top of this script.
I under stand scripting quite well, but I'm just not sure if there are app.open options to tell this to keep layers.  Also, I'm pretty sure a try catch block will not work, becuase this dialog appears before the image is actually pixels on the screen.
When the script generates our web images I've tried to flatten the document right after its opened and I still see this dialog.  Any help would be super appreciated.
    Thank you!

app.open will encounter problems that you really have no control over so you get an annoying dialog that you can't do anything with. The one that caused me the most grief is when a script tries to open a corrupt jpg image. IMNSHO, app.open should throw an Exception if it can't open the file and DisplayDialogs.NO is set. That way you can log the filename and deal with it later.
Bottom line is that there is nothing you can do in JS. One thing I have done in the past was use a utility like AutoKey on Windows that looks for these dialogs and automatically responds to them so you can continue processing. I'm fairly certain there is something similar available for OS X.
