Opening fcp7 projects in mavericks
Hi All,
I'm looking for a definitive answer to a problem which has been annoying us for a while. We made the move from FCP to Premiere when the FCP world collapsed. (I know Apple have been attempting to re-build it ever since but we had a business to run in the meantime - let's not go there) So we have lots of legacy FCP projects which we may need need to access in Premiere CC. Premiere CC needs Mavericks to enable us to use the Sony XAVC Codec. So we want to update our systems to Mavericks to ensure our edit suites are all on the same systems. However, in moving to Mavericks, we'll be closing the door on our legacy FCP projects - which we can't do. We are currently running a machine on Lion which we use to create XMLs as and when we need them but we really need that machine to be running Premiere CC.
Does anybody else share the problem and has anybody found a solution?

p.s. One for a different thread really but I'm so glad Apple broke FCP. While it felt like my wife had cheated on me at the time, I now have a new, hot, younger model in Premiere that's so much more flexible and integrates with my Adobe friends (AI, PS, AE etc) like my ex-wife never did! Pushing that analagy to the extreme - I suppose this problem is a bit like having to pay my ex-wife maintenance!
FCP 7 will install and function in Mavericks. Probably not at full capacity, but if all you are doing is exporting XMLs, I'm sure it can do that.

I have been working on a scholarship short film for a couple of months now (am a senior in high school) and have been using my school's Mac Pros with OSX 10.7 and FCP7 to edit it. Yesterday I bought a Macbook Pro and got FCPX, and am having trouble moving everything over (the computers at school are going to be wiped for the end of the year soon and I must continue to edit it on my MacBook). The project file "MattsShort.fcp" from FCP7 at school isn't even being recognized as a project file by the newest version of FCPX, so obviously I cannot open it and get to work connecting the media. How can I open this file in FCPX? Excluding exporting the project at school to a quicktime movie, I need to be able to further edit the timeline.
Cool, thanks! I was able to import the timeline into FCPX but all of the files are offline, even though I imported the same exact clips that were in the original FCP7 project, into the same 'event' that I have the new FCPX timeline in. I believe the problem lies in that FCPX imported the clips and named them after the date and time they were created, rather than the "Clip #XXX" that FCP7 assigned to the timeline. Does this sound correct? And if so, is the only way to solve this problem to go back to FCP7 and rename all of the clips assigned to the timeline to the names FCPX gave them? I really hope there is a simpler solution but given all of the work it takes to even import a FCP7 project into FCPX, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the only solution.
A little more info: When I use 7toX to convert the XML file, it says that my media will be offline.
EDIT: I just watched a youtube video that explained that 7toX brings over the required media.....why isn't it doing that for me? I am on two different computers if I hadn't already said.

I just finished replacing a bad systems drive and upgraded all my software to make them current. The problem I am having is that one of my projects (created in FCP5) is not opening in the new FCP7. It goes through all the motions, it even shows the converted time line, bins, files and etc. but just before it finishes Final Cut crashes. Any ideas?If you still have access to FCP5 open the project and re-save under a new name.
If that doesn't work, save as XML
If you don't have access to FCP5, or it still doesn't work, take all you media files off-line (disconnect or remove the hard drives) and try to open in FCP7, if it opens, save under new name before bringing media back on-line.
If you continue to have problems you'll be using trial & error to eliminate the bad media file -
I have a 27 inch iMac with maverick os. my current version of iMovie (10.0.6) will not open older projects i created in iMovie 9.0.9. I can find the projects and they have a ".rcproject" file extension

I have moved the Event and Project Folders to the "top-layer of the drive" as the instructions state, right alongside the System Folder, Users Folder and Applications Folders.
When I open iMovie 10.0.8, the Events and Projects Folders are empty:
When I select File/Update Projects and Events, I get an alert box that says iMovie couldn't find any:
Not knowing exactly what is meant by the "top layer" in the instructions, I moved the Events and Project folders back inside the "Movies" folder where I found them (but then not where I would call the "top" layer, but rather "iMac/Users/Home/Movies/iMovieProjects". Then I tried to "Update Projects and Events" and received the same alert: "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update."
Then I tried to update iMovie 9.0 (iMovie '11 version 9.0 (1073)) to version 9.0.9 .
[As an aside, the nomenclature of iMovie drives me nuts. The latest version is 10.0.8, which us newer than iMovie '11.]
Back to the update of version 9.0 to 9.0.9.
Presumably because I have version 10.0.8 installed, I got this alert box:
So, I cannot update version 9.0
and I cannot "Update" the Events and Projects created in version 9.0. -
FCP7 Project only opens with Caps Lock key on. Why?
I have an FCP7 project which hangs on the 'preparing video display' notice and won't open.
If I have Caps Lock on then the project opens fine and I can takes Caps Lock off and work in the project fine.
Any ideas?

Premiere Pro CS5.5 on Mac crashes when opening a project
Hi I am having a problem where Premiere crashes when I open a project. I tried to open a project earlier today and the program kept crashing. I opened an old version of the project, got in. Updated it and saved it under a new name. Now when I try to open the new project I am having the same crashing problem.

Is it possible to open Final Cut Express 4 projects in the latest version of Final Cut Pro X (10.0.4)?
I have 18 projects on my hard drive, and I'm concecrned about their compaitibility in the future. Should I leave them as they are, and I'll be able to import them into Final Cut Pro X, or should I first convert them to Final Cut Pro 7 projects?You can't open FCE projects in FCPX. If you can open a copy in FCP7 and export an XML file.

I just installed Mavericks and FCPX 10.1.1 on another boot drive to test if I can handle the switch to FCPX.
Is it possible to import any FCP7 projects into FCPX ?
Thought it's best to ask before trying it and messing something up. They are pretty intricate edits for professional use.

NickYou need to read the info from Assisted Editing, particularly "What loses something in translation" and "What gets lost in translation" Since you are exporting an XML from FCP7, there are some things in the original sequence, such as effects on clips, that may or may not make it to FCP-X.

File open/exists problems under Mavericks
If I try to open a file under Mavericks, it says Path is not a valid path even if the files exists for real.
I even tried app.project.file.exists for an opened project, and it return false.
Anybody have an idea ?

By the way my project file is on the desktop, i also tried putting it in Documents, Downloads,etc.. but didn't work either... However it is working on an external drive...Wow, ahahah.
Found the bug source. A big OSX security flaw in my opinion. As the file was on the desktop, the path was Users/Me/Desktop/... However, I had a network connection to my pc, and the link was to my user account, Users/me/... So OSX was not trying to open its own /Users/ path but my PC folder... Somebody could fool the system, by creating a volume called /Users/... with some fake duplicate files, and someone could try to open something on his drive, but in fact it would load the evil Users volume.
I don't understand how this could be possible. I never understood how bad the OSX network volumes system was that bad, but never tought it would be so crappy. -
Open Other Project Feature Follow up ?
I just posted a question in regards to "Open Other Project"
button giving me inconsistent results. I was reading other posts to
try to find an answer when something I read made me question
myself.
When I am setting "Open Other Project" as an option, I
actually typed the name of the file that I want to link to. For
instance I type Interview. I do not add .exe to the end of the file
or .cp. Okay, I just thought about trying to select the exe file
from the ...button but realized that it would only allow me to
connect to a .cp file. Hmmmmm.
So, my question is - did I mess up by typing the name of my
file with no extension? Should I actually be linking to another .cp
file? Since these all need to be executables, will I have issues
with the Interface searching for .cp file instead of an .exe?
Hope this makes some kind of sense to someone.

It is causing me some MAJOR issues. Basically if the interface
doesn't close, then the file that it is trying to switch to takes a
very long time to open and could cause the user to think they need
to click on the button again which as you can imagine creates an

Hi Guys
I'm trying to open a CS4 project in CS5.
On opening I get a message saying it was created in an earlier version of Pr and must be converted. I click OK and get a screen showing all the project folders and clips with options to 'skip' or 'skip all'. I tried opening the folders but nothing is there and it says 'No items match your search'. I tried typing the project name into the 'File name' box; the same thing. I click on a clip but it that doesn't do anything either, so I click 'skip all' and when the project opens all the clips have been replaced by an image saying ' Media Offline'. I find if I right click on each clip I can relink but this would take some time as there are 75 in the project. Any ideas how I can open this project to work on?

GrahamWhen you open a CS4 project in CS5, the required conversion will result in a new filename with _1 appended to the name. Then when opening this project you need to show PR where the files are located by directing it to the correct directory. Once you have done that for the first file, it will automatically find the other files in that directory. Since you have now offlined all the files by skipping them, I suggest you delete this CS5 project and import again from CS4 and taking the little time to direct PR to the correct media.

Can't open my projects that I did on my laptop on my desktop without the CS6 working
I downloaded creative cloud CS6 on my laptop a year ago nearly and now have a new desktop computer we have installed the creative cloud mbbutand thecomputer came with the old CC programs which I try to update to CS6 but everytime I go into ndesign it comes up with error. "cannot open 'my project' because It was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC CC (9.2) you must use that version orto open the file. to then enable it to be opened in this version, choose Save asIndesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML " all I am wanting to do is only use all CS6 that I'm paying for and have all and probjects open so I can work on them again but I do not know o do what this error is telling me.
CS6 was the first version of InDesign that was available through a Creative Cloud subscription, and it is also still available by perpetual license. Creative cloud is now up to version CC 2014 (version 10), which is tow versions newer than CS6 (version 8). You can install CS6 on the new machine as part of the subscription, or if the CS6 is part of a subscription plan on the old machine you may be able to install the newer version there, depending on the OS.
