Opening i photo folder in Photoshop

Help ! Im a little confused as to why when choosing i photo library in photoshp all of the folders are identified by numbers only ..why dont they show the names of the folders i have labled in i photo
ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You iPhoto albums and folders are virtual constructions; that is, they do not exist on the hard disc. What do exist are the folders, based on the Film Rolls created when you import. You can edit the names of the Film Rolls and reorganize them, if you wish. But you must do this from within iPhoto, not the Finder.
It is advised that you do not tamper with the items inside the iPhoto Library folder from within the Finder. Doing so can lead you to damage your library. Photos inside iPhoto need to be accessed from within iPhoto. By accessing them from Photoshop, your edited versions will not be recognized inside iPhoto.
You can set Photoshop as your external editor in iPhoto's Preferences. To edit a photo, double-click on its thumbnail in the iPhoto window. It will open in Photoshop. When finished editing do a simple Save (not Save As) using the same file name and extension. This will save the edited version back to iPhoto, and the thumbnail will update to reflect the edits.
The exception to that rule is if your edits cause Photoshop to create a layered .psd file. To save back to iPhoto, you can flatten the image and force Photoshop to save as a jpeg. Or, to keep the layers, Save As to a location OUTside the iPhoto Library folder, and import it in to iPhoto. In this case, the edited version would be a new original, not linked to the unedited photo.
BTW, you can still use iPhoto to edit a photo by clicking on the Full-Screen Edit Mode button.

  • Is it possible to see thumbnails vs icons when opening a photo folder

I'm new to MAC. 2 days new. Not happy right now with MAC. Is there any way to view an open folder of photos as thumbnails, NOT icons?

    Hi Brian,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Whilst OS X doesn't have the exact same feature as XP in this respect, there are a variety of solutions:
    1) Import all your photos into iPhoto: this was included as part of the iLife suite, and is intended to be the primary method for viewing your photos in OS X. As you've just purchased your Mac you'll have iPhoto 6, which has a great number of features that make viewing your photos simple and efficient. If you don't want to use iPhoto, try Adobe's Photoshop Elements or KavaSoft's ShoeBox, amongst a plethora of others.
    2) Go into List view in the Finder (selectable from any window's toolbar, from the View menu or by hitting Apple-3), and turn on the Show Preview Column option in View Options (also in the View menu). Then, whenever you click on a file (eg. a photo) a thumbnail will appear in the right-hand column.
NB: Show Preview Column tends to be on by default on new Macs.
    3) Give all your photos thumbnail icons instead of generic icons, then go into Icon view (Apple-1) and ramp up the icon size. The Finder usually adds a thumbnail to image files automatically, but not always. To force a thumbnail onto an image file try using CocoaThumbX (freeware), or a similar utility.
    4) As only a recent user of Tiger, this one's just come to my attention. Select all the images you want to view, right-click for the contextual menu and choose "Slideshow". The first of the images will fill the screen, and you can then scroll through them using either the mouse and the bezel that appears, or by tapping left or right on the cursor keys. The bezel also lets you choose "Index Sheet", which will show you every photo at once in the form of a selectable thumbnail of each photo you've chosen to view in the Slideshow.
Hope you find one of these alternatives satisfactory.

  • When I open the 'Photos' folder in Finder, I can't find the 'Photobooth' folder, and so when I want to take a Photobooth picture, it says that it can't save photos. Help!

You have to use Photos import function to import the photos. Open Photos and look for the Import function in the menus and then navigate to your downloads folder and import the photos.

  • Why can't I open a photo folder in Media window in iWeb to retrieve a photo

I upgraded to the latest version of iWeb and it didn't correct the problem I have with it.
I want to add just 1 photo from an album. When I go to the Media menu it lists all my iPhoto albums. But I can't open an album to find the desired photo.
Any ideas how to do that?
Right now I have to drag the entire album into an iWeb page and then delete 100 photos I do NOT want to use.
I've searched but couldn't find this answer anywhere. Thanks

I'm not at my Mac right now so bear with me.
If I recall correctly, that's the way that the media menu is intended to function. You need to open iPhoto in a separate window and drag the desired photo onto the iWeb page.

  • When I try to open the photo editor in Photoshop Elements 12 I get the message that it has stopped working.  I am using Windows 8.1

Can anyone suggest how I might overcome this please.

    Hi,
The D810 requires Camera Raw 8.6 or later - the latest version that is compatible with Photoshop Elements 12 is Camera Raw 8.5 as far as I can see.
You need to either buy a new version of Photoshop Elements or use the free Adobe DNG converter.

  • My photo folder won't open

When I click on the folder I've called Photo Folder, I get a message saying that the alias couldn't open it because the original is missing. So I went to Time Machine and followed the directions in numerous backups,  doing the Restore actions, many  times, seeing the files get copied, each time, and having Time Machine create a new Photo Folder alongside the original, each time. I still can't open either Photo Folder, and I'm miserable, because those are my cherished photos. The Photo Folder seemed to be there, all the time; I didn't do anything to harm the folder, unless upgrading OS X from Leopard 10.5.8to Snow Leopard 10.6-8, one version of Firefox to another "better" one or the same with Safari, and so on, could harm my photos and make it seem as though the folder had disappeared. And by the way, some individual photos that are just hanging around, loose, open just fine.
Oh, man, I have been having so many problems since I upgraded, but all those changes were necessary for me to be able to do even basic things effectively. (Among other things, Apple Mail now changes my message sort order from Date Received to Subject every time I blink an eye. I still haven't gotten an answer or suggestion about that yet, months later.)
But for now I can live with the shifting messages, if I can only get my photos back in the land of the living. Can you help me?
    Thank you so much.

Forgive my ignorance, Eric, but I am not sure what you mean, nor how to do what you suggest. What I do is go to the list of items in Macintosh HD and double-click on what I believe is the folder, itself. Is that the alias, not the folder? In answer to your question, I get a message saying that the alias can't find the original folder because it is "missing." When I've presumably restored the folder with Time Machine (after it shows the files in the folder loading), the same thing happens. I've been saving the original folder (it says, "Photo Folder (original)," and discarding the alias when that option is offered. I then try to open the new "Photo Folder" but get the same results.
If what I'm doing when trying to open the folder is not what I should be doing, can you lead me by the hand here and tell me how to bypass the alias? I'd really appreciate that.
By the way, I didn't mention that (thinking that something had been corrupted) before I tried Time Machine, I built a new directory with Disk Warrior (4.4) and ran Disk Utility (permissions repair and disk verify). As always, permissions repair found and said it repaired various mismatches and other difficulties, and the disk was reported to be OK.
Thanks for your considerate reply. I hope that I'll be able to fix whatever is wrong. Those photos are very precious to me.

  • I am having probs. using photo elements 10  opening i-photo files

I cannot open i-photo files with photoshop elements 10. It gives me a program fault message. Can anyone help?

The only solution we were able to come up with is mirroring screens (where everything seems to work ok) as a temporary work around - they are sending the issue to their engineers and have scheduled a followup with me for 4 days from now. The only other option seems to be to revert back to 10:10:1 if you have Time Machine set up. I'll followup when I know more.

  • Photoshop CS5 keeps closing when I try to open a photo

Ok...Photoshop launches just fine but as soon as I try to open a photo I get the message:
"Adobe Photoshop CS5  has stopped working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
    Anyone else expereinced this?
    thanks much!

More or less standard advice in this kind of case is:
    1.  Your display driver may be buggy.
Try disabling OpenGL drawing by choosing Edit - Preferences - Performance and unchecking [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing.  Restart Photoshop.
If this helps, then chances are good that you need to update your display driver.  Go to the web site of the maker of your display adapter (video card) and download and update their latest.  EXCEPTION:  If you have an ATI Radeon card, avoid ATI Catalyst 11.3 and 11.4 - use 11.2 instead.
    2.  You may have a corrupted font on your system.
If you have installed any fonts since the last time Photoshop worked, this is especially likely.  The workaround for this is to move all non-original Windows fonts to another folder temporarily and see if the problem goes way.
    3.  Your preferences may have gotten corrupted.
Photoshop maintains a lot of preferences in files, and if any kind of system fault has resulted in nonsense values being written in those files, it may be driving Photoshop batty.  The preferences can be returned to defaults by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt when first starting Photoshop from its menu or shortcut.  If you're quick enough it will prompt you to delete your preferences.
    4.  Your document may be pointing to a non-existent printer or something's wrong with your default printer setup.
I've seen several folks have their problems here solved by tweaking the printer setup, though I don't recall exactly what any of them did.
    Good luck.

  • Photoshop Elements (4.0) - opening iPhoto photos

I'm using both iPhoto '08 (v 7.1.3) and Photoshop Elements 4.0. While in Elements, I do a file - open and browse to my Photos folder but the 'iPhoto Library' is grayed out.
How can I easily edit my photos that I've imported into iPhoto with Elements?

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I have an old Kodak Photo CD (1999) and Photoshop Elements 11 on Windows 7. How can I open the .pcd images?
Please help me open these photos. They are very important to me and I need to access them.
If I can't do it with any of the software installed on my computer, would someone be willing to open them, save them as jpgs and send them to me?
    Thank you so much, Nancy

You can get the plugin here by downloading the Extra Content for Photoshop CS3  File 2
Just be sure to follow Note:Very Important Instructions or the link won't work.
    http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html
After downloading the PHSPCS3_Cont_WWE.exe, double click on it to extract the contents, probably to your desktop.
Then in the Goodies folder, Optional Plugins folder, you'll see the Kodak PhotoCD folder
Open that and copy the Photo CD.8BI to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11\Plug-Ins
Copy the profiles to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles
