Opening images in other programs

I am attempting to open images from my iphoto library in Photoshop 7. I have set the drop down menu in the general dialogue box to "opens with Photoshop". When I double click on the image, it will open the Photoshop program, but the image itself will not open.
I also changed the option in the drop down menu to "opens photo in edit window", but all I get is a black box with no image visable.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks

Hi steven,
Did you start having this problem with Photoshop after you did an archive and install? If so.....
Try this suggestion I copied and pasted from MacFixIt first
"Photoshop CS: Fix for file opening problem Yesterday we reported that since installing Mac OS X 10.4, Photoshop CS refuses to open any new files or create any new documents, reporting a "program error" when one tries to do so. Our previously reported workaround involved re-installing Photoshop CS, but MacFixIt reader Bryan Schappel now offers a faster solution:
"This happens because the Archive and Install option does not copy over a necessary folder for Photoshop. The critical folder is called 'ScriptingAdditions' and is stored in the main Library folder. This folder contains one file 'Adobe Unit Types' that makes Photoshop open files that have been double-clicked or dragged to the PS icon in the Dock.
"Simply move this folder (and file) from the 'Previous System' backup to the Library folder, relaunch Photoshop and all is well again. No need to completely re-install.""
I copied an pasted instead of putting the link in because it is not on the front page and you would have to search around to find it. Hope it is ok to do that here.
Can you view the image you are having problems with in the Finder? Navigate to the image in the finder and double click to open in Preview. Can you see it fine in Preview. If not, then the image is corrupt.

  • How open images from other programs & convert to tiff?

    I am new to digital photography. I usually take 2 to 3 MB images with my Canon Rebel XT and use iPhoto as my basic program to organize images, create albums, and do very basic editing. I'm running on a G4 Powerbook with OS10.3. I expect to upgrade to iPhoto6 soon. I also use Canon's Image Browser (because it does a better job of compression for emailing that my present iPhoto) and an abbreviated version of ArcSoft PhotoStudio which came bundled with my Canon and has editing tools similar to Adobe Photoshop Elements.
    So far I usually use iPhoto's "Preferences/Open in Other" command when I want to open one or more selected images in one of the other programs. I have not found any easy way to locate an image while working in ImageBrowser or PhotoStudio, because iPhoto assigns folder numbers by date, so I'd have to know in which of many numbered folders to look. Placing images into iPhoto albums does not help because while the album names appear in these program's tree view they appear unable to link to them. Canon refuses to answer questions relating to iPhoto and referred me to ArcSoft for any questions about PhotoStudio. ArcSoft says they provide no support for programs bundled with hardware. Typical. What I'd like to know is:
    1. Is there any easy way to locate iPhoto images while I'm in one of these other programs?
    2. Is there any way to copy an entire album from iPhoto to one of these other programs?
    3. I've attended two different digital photo classes in which instructors felt it desirable to convert jpegs to tiffs. One felt it was necessary to reduce the loss of pixels during editing, and the other does it for any image he plans to print, claiming it improves print quality. They recommended getting a special conversion program. Based on responses here to the topic: "Want to save jpeg file as tiff before making edits to photos", others feel that for most amateurs like me this is a minor issue, especially with iPhoto. Testing this I have found, as Kevin Wolfe1 says Feb 12, that compression of a jpeg appears to occur primarily on the first edit and does not sognificantly degrade the image. The programs I mention above appear able to save an edited jpeg as a tiff if desired, but I've noticed also that iPhoto's Export command includes the option to export a jpeg (to desktop or another folder) as a tiff. When I tried this, it did create a file identified as .tif, and I can drag that file back into the iPhoto Library where it remains named as a .tif, and according to iPhoto, this file contains about 5 times the MBs the original jpeg had. What I'm curious to know is, is that a true tiff file or is iPhoto kidding me?

    In iPhoto 06 you have the option to NOT move imported image file in to the iPhoto library. So they images stay in the place where you put them. With this option the iPhoto library only contains "pointers".
    2. Is there any way to copy an entire album from
    iPhoto to one of these other programs?
    Can't you open an album, select all the images then then use "export"

    If you are worried about this then you should be shooting RAW format. In your case the camera is doing the JPG conversion and the "damage" is unrecoverable.
    iPhoto 6 and Tigeer (10.4.x) has a little bit better supportfor raw format images i yu are worried about something that makes such a small difference then you should be woried about the stuf that makes a large difference first.
    You might want to concider this workflow:
    1) use Canon software to download files from camera
    2) use Canon software to convert to TIFF
    3) Import TIFF to iPhoto (using option to NOT consolidate library
    4) specify arcedit, PS or Gimp as your external editor
    Others might want to lt iPhoto do the import and raw conversion but you said you wanted thr photos to be stored outside of iPhoto's library system you you can find them with out having to do an export.

    if that does not work you can force quit a computer shut down by hold the power button for an extended period.

  • Opening images in external programs from Lightroom

    Hi all,
    I have two questions.
    Firstly - Can someone advise why, when I edit an image in an outside plugin ( right click on Edit In and select the program ), and then when I save the edited image in that program and go back to my Lightroom filmstrip, it is not there.
    The edited image only appears when I close Lightroom down and reopen it. Then the edited image is there alongside the original. Obviously, closing down Lightroom every time I want to edit an image is not ideal.
    I need to be able to open an image for external edits ( CS5 / NIK plugins ) and then see it again when I come back to Lightroom.
    Any ideas ????
    Secondly - this is the 3rd time I have asked this question in this forum. When I check a few hours later, my questions has disappeared, I assume moved down the line.
    where do the older questions go ??? I haven't had a chance to read any answers. There is no " see older posts " button. Whats with that ????
    Appreciate any help.
    Dave.

    Dave, looking back through this thread I don't see any mention of what OS you are on. I myself have Windows 7 so my knowledge of Mac systems is thoroughly limited, but over the years I have seen countless posts about problems that were finally tracked down to permissions settings for folders or drives in Mac machines. Normally, when you send an image to an outside editor LR temporally designates the folder from which it came as a sort of "watched folder" and automatically does the synchronization to auto-import a newly saved RGB image. If your LR can't do that (even manually), it's not clear where the fault lies; in LR or in the interface with the OS that gives LR access to the folder.

  • How do i open and control other programs using labview?

    I'm presently trying to use labview to try to open and operate another program,but having much difficulty.The external program i'm using is called the Foundation program.
    This Foundation program will use VHDL programming to create a virtual chip and then synthesising it.This program will then simulate the output of this VHDL program to verify that it is working as desired.Then the last stage is to download the whole VHDL program into a FPGA chip using a xilinx cable.
    All this need to be done using a labview program - to open the Foundation program and then extract the saved file and then to execute the download command to cause the VHDL program to be downloaded onto the FPGA chip.How do i go
    about doing all this?What is the first step i must do.Also all this have to be done thru networking..looks like its too difficult..I really need help.
    grays

    I haven't done VHDL so pardon my ignorance.
    LabVIEW can call external DLL via "Call Library Function" or C programs via "Code Interface Node", both located in "Advanced" function.
    If your program is a DOS program, use "System Exec.vi" found in "Communication" function. If you need to format your DOS command prior to sending it, use the "Format Into String" function in "String" function palette.
    Lastly, if you're trying to extract data, assuming it is text, use "File I/O" functions. If the data is binary, use "File I/O -> Binary File VIs".
    Hope that answers most of your questions.

  • The image color in Windows Photo Gallery is wrong, same image in other program color is correct.

     This is the correct color form Google Image:
    This is the color from Windows Photo Gallery:
      It looks like it is a issue of Windows Photo Gallery bcause if the same image is opened in another program(Photoshop, paint, etc), the color stays same, the thumbnail color is correct as well. However, it is different in Windows Photo Gallery.
    Does anyone know what the problem is?
    Thanks.

    Windows photo gallery is not colour profile aware, so assumes your monitor is sRGB.  The same is true of the desktop wallpaper.  There is nothing you can do about this, other than use a different default picture viewing application as default, or convert your images to the ICC profile of your monitor (which you can do in photoshop).  I would only recommend this for wallpapers though.

  • I want an add-on that opens images in whatever program I choose

    You know how when you're looking at a folder in Windows Explorer, you right click on an image filetype and there's an "open with" option where you can select what program with which to open/view/edit that image?
    Is there an add-on for FireFox that allows me to do the same thing?
    For example, I go to http://icanhascheezburger.com I see an image I like and want to save, but I want to open it in IrfanView to edit it before I save it. So in Firefox, I right click on the image and I get the "open with" menu a if I right clicked ob the same file after saving it

    One add-on that can do that is Launchy - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/launchy/
    Though the description states it lets you open links and mailto's with external applications, you can also configure it so that when you right-click on an image you get the option to open the image in your chosen application. For details on setting up Launchy see http://gemal.dk/mozilla/launchy.html

  • Firefox wasn't opening websites when other programs were, so I uninstalled it but now it will not reinstall from the website.

    HI there,
    Firefox wasn't able to connect to the internet, yet other browser programs were fine (IE, etc.) so I thought I"d uninstall Firefox and reinstall it from the website. I uninstalled it fine, but it will not download. It goes through all the steps of the download and setup from the website and appears to be installing in "program files," yet does not appear in the list of programs. It's just not there! What could the problem be? I'm running Windows 7 and McAfee.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Go into our program files folder and delete the Mozilla Firefox program folder. Then open msconfig and make sure that Firefox is unchecked from the Programs startup list, then open regedit and find the HKEY_LOCALUSER_SOFTWARE key and delete strings associated with Firefox. This process will require several re-boots, but once you're done you should be able to download and install Firefox without any troubles.

  • Firefox won't open links from other programs if already running

    I've seen this reported many other places, but none of the solutions have worked. I am running Firefox v33.0.2 (current as of this message) on Windows 7 64-bit (fully updated). I did the following:
    1. Completely deleted my profile;
    2. Uninstalled Firefox, then manually deleted all remaining files on the system pertaining to Firefox and rebooted;
    3. Gone into the Windows "Default Programs" control panel (DPCP) and told it to make Internet Explorer the default (giving it all of its defaults);
    4. Downloaded a fresh copy of the installer and installed Firefox 33.0.2;
    5. Let the installer set my default browser to Firefox;
    6. Tested link opening behaviour (see below);
    7. Let Firefox set itself as the default browser when it asked me;
    8. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    9. With Firefox not running, gone back into the DPCP, and had it set all of Firefox's defaults;
    10. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    11. With Firefox not running, set Internet Explorer to the default via the DPCP, then back to Firefox;
    12. Tested link opening behaviour again (see below);
    13. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in safe-mode;
    14. Repeated steps 11 and 12 with Firefox in normal-mode with a new profile;
    The observed link-opening behaviour:
    - Internet shortcuts (i.e., actual shortcut files on, say, the Desktop) open in Firefox without issue whether or not Firefox is already running. When this approach is taken, no additional firefox.exe processes are created. The process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
    - Links clicked in Thunderbird open correctly if Firefox is not running: one new firefox.exe process is created, I get a new Firefox window and the link loads correctly. The firefox.exe process does not have any command-line parameters per Task Manager;
    - Links clicked in Thunderbird yield the "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" message if Firefox is already running. In this case, I see a second firefox.exe process created. Per Task Manager, the new process has the command-line arguments '-osint -url "FOO"' where FOO is the URL I clicked.
    From these observations I believe that the link hand-off behaviour is broken. I use a single profile using the as-installed shortcuts.
    Intitial version: 33.0.2
    Update: Updated to 33.1, still broken.

    Under Tools > Options > Advanced look to see if the "check if Firefox is default browser on startup" Check this and then restart FF. If it isn't the default it should ask if you want to make it the default. Choose yes and it should open when clicking links again.

  • Firefox 6.0.2 is no longer opening links from other programs even with all extensions disabled

    Firefox updated to 6.0.2 last night and now it will not open any links from outside programs. When you click the hyperlink, the window flashes but Firefox does not respond. I have disabled all extensions, it did not affect the issues.
    Also with this update, I am unable to use Synergy, Firefox locks the cursor to one computer and will not let it move to another.

    I am having the same problem with Firefox version 8.0.1. I checked addons and they are up to date. When I make Chrome my default browser hyperlinks work fine to Chrome.

  • Opening photos in other programs

    I have been a long time iPhoto user but have never gotten the file structure of where my photos actually are. I use Photoshop Elements (PSE) to scrapbook and am wondering if there is a better way to get my photos into PSE. Currently, I use iPhoto to find the pictures I want to scrap. I then drag them to my desktop because I can never find them any other way. From here I can do file-open in PSE and I can easily open the pics I want. This seems a little crazy though since my pictures are actually already on my computer, in iPhoto. I feel like I shouldn't have to copy them to my desktop to be able to find them outside of iPhoto.
    When in PSE I try to choose file-open. I can then click on my Pictures file and I can see my iPhoto libraries but they are grayed out. I can't open them. Why is that?
    I have also tried using Adobe Bridge to browse. There again I click on my Pictures folder. Here I CAN select my libraries but when I click on them iPhoto opens. I don't want it to open, I just want to be able to get my pictures out of it.
    I hope this makes sense. I have never understood how to access my pictures from outside of iPhoto and I finally thought I would ask.

    Daniel, I have also been using iPhoto as a quick browser to review my pix while I've used CS2 for all of my editing. I agree with your description of the new iPhoto, and while I understand from reading lots of the threads why Apple changed iPhoto, I hate it too. I truly don't like the way they hide my pix from me and how I need to hunt for them. Also, I like to save my edited pix in .psd, iPhoto saves them as .tiff or .jpg. I have another solution to your problem. I import my pix directly from my camera memory card into a folder in the 'Pictures' folder. When I shoot, I save exclusively in RAW. Only after you have the RAW pix on your hard drive, do you import the pictures into iPhoto. Make sure that iPhoto is set up to copy the pictures (Preferences > advanced) which will be palced into the 'Originals' folder in the iPhoto library. The advantages are: you can find your pix easily using Bridge, you can edit the pictures and save them as you want, and then find them again easily. The major downsides are: use more memory and iPhoto will not show your edited photo. You can fix this second problem by re-importing the picture and deleting the old one from iPhoto.
