Opening images in preview

In Windows computers when you double click an image to open it, you can look through all the images that are in the folder with the image viewer. However with Preview on Macs when I open an image it only shows that one.The only way for me to click on an image and be able to cycle through all of them in preview is if I highlight all images by pressing (command + A) and that way I can view them together in one preview window. Now this would be alright, excep for the fact that command + A and clicking will open all files I will often open documents and things that I don't want open.
So basically what I want to know is:
Can preview be set so when you double click one image you can view all image in the folder with the image viewe
Change the default image viewer if neccessary
Is what I am asking possible on Macs?

Well. Interesting results to report. In short, it doesn't work as I need it to, but shows promise.
1) If I drop an image file on the target folder, it usually opens in Preview. If I drop another, Preview quickly closes, re-opens, and shows the new image. But in a test, one image in six consistently would not appear in Preview...right away. As much as 4-6 minutes later, the image might suddenly appear, along with others that failed to appear right away. Note: these images are jpegs of 200+ to 700kb in size.
2) Something in the script is causing Preview to close every few minutes, then re-open, showing the same group of images. This happens without an image having just been added to the target folder.
3) Both (1) and (2) suggest that the mechanism that loads these images into Preview is not actually responding to the added file, but only checks every so often to see if anything new has shown up.
4) When I test the process using a digital camera and the EyeFi card, the results are worse: although the image file appears in the target folder within 3-5 seconds of being shot, it never opens in Preview right away, which makes the process unusable. In order to serve my purposes, it needs to appear in Preview within a couple of seconds of hitting the target folder. The image will not appear for at least 4 to 8 minutes of being added to the target folder.
This seems to be a harder goal to achieve than I had expected. Perhaps Preview is a poor application to use, but iPhoto was even less workable, last time I looked.
My instinct is that the script Pierre L. provided is awfully close to successful, but something is not allowing it to do what I need. Are there any users of EyeFi cards out there who can comment?

  • Applescript to add open images in Preview into iPhoto?

I've got an eyefi card in my digital camera that sends my pics directly to a folder on my laptop in which a folder action runs that automatically opens the image in preview. What I'd like to do next is to close the images I don't want, and then run an applescript that will take the remaining open images in Preview and import them into iPhoto.
I guess if I were to do it manually, I would drag the proxy icon of each window into iPhoto? But that would create several separate events in iPhoto since it would import them one at a time. It would be ideal if there was a way for Applescript to locate the open images in finder, and then import all of those images into iPhoto all at once. Is this possible? If so, any tips on how to get started with that? I'm a newb to Applescript, so be gentle.

It sounds like you've been doing the search in the menubar Spotlight field. If so, here are two things to try:
One, when you have located the image you think you want to open, hit Command-Return, which will open (in a new Finder window) the folder in which the image file is located, even if it is inside your iPhoto library. The default application for opening the image then should be Preview (it is for me).
Two, select "Show All" at the top of the results, which opens a Finder search window. An image file in the resulting list, even if it is inside the iPhoto package, will open by default in Preview (That's what it does for me.)
    Hope this helps.

  • How to open image added to Pages doc in Preview app?

    Hello,
Anyone know hot to open images added to Pages in preview app on Mac? When I click on any image with right mouse button I have in menu these options - "Open in Pixelmator and Capture selection from screen".
I tried to make my own Automator service "Open img in Preview" and it work well in Finder and other apps (I selected it in Automator option to work in all apps) but this service is not show in Pages > Services.
Anyone know how to fix it or how to make this service visible in Pages? I tried to found "Open in Pixelmator" workflow on my Mac to rewriting or save my "Open img in Preview" workflof into same folder but no chance. In (Library > Services etc)
Thank you for you kind, sorry for my English
    Jan.S

I don't know how Pixelmator created their Service, but I suspect it involves programming that is beyond my abilities.
The following AppleScript will copy the selection in Pages and open a new preview window from the clipboard. It could be run as a Service with Automator. (It will also leave the image on the clipboard; if that is a problem, it could probably be modified, but I didn't get that sophisticated with it.)
    tell application "System Events"
              tell process "Pages"
                        set frontmost to true
click menu item "Copy" of menu 1 of menu bar item "Edit" of menu bar 1
              end tell
              tell process "Preview"
                        set frontmost to true
click menu item "New from Clipboard" of menu 1 of menu bar item "File" of menu bar 1

  • Photoshop CS5 .jpg images open up in Preview

I am using Photoshop CS5 and OS 10.6.5.
No matter how I save a .jpg, if I double click on the file name (not open it up form within PSD) it opens up in preview. I have gone under Preferences and set the File handling every which way, but it still opens up  in Preview.
The only way I can change it is go to GET INFO and change the file format. This is a bit tedious when I have about 80 images that need to transfer over to a Windows 7 environment. The Windows people can't even see the files - they are unopenable.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Megan

Click on the closed file once to highlight. Then in Finder go File>Get Info and choose Photoshop to open. Click "Change All" in the same menu to have Photoshop open all similar jpgs.

  • When I have resized and saved an image in Photoshop (CS, version 8.0 for Mac) using image size, why is it so large when I open it in preview or another image viewer? Has it actually saved according to the size I specified?

When I have resized and saved an image in Photoshop (CS, version 8.0 for Mac) using image size, why is it so large when I open it in preview or another image viewer? Has it actually saved according to the size I specified?

You want to view the image at the Print Size, which represents the size that shows in the Image>Resize Dialog.
    View>Print Size
Since screen resolution is almost always lower that the print resolution (somewhere between 72 and 96 usually), images will always look bigger on the screen, unless you view them at print size.
(apple Retina displays have a much higher resolution than normal screens, closer to the average print size resolution)

  • Preview freezes when trying to open images - other programs have no trouble

Preview freezes when trying to open images - other programs have no trouble with the same file. This problem is somewhat intermittent.
I have replaced the Preview application by moving a copy from another equivalent machine - no luck.
Did not find any preferences file trash, though I looked.
    Is there one?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Edwin,
The .plist for Preview should be located @ ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist (where "~" is your Home folder).
Trash the file, logout/login or reboot your computer and try opening the app and opening the offending file again.
Let us know if any luck with finding the .plist there and opening your file?

  • Photoshop CC "Open" dialogue Window preview image query.

    Hello and Good Evening.
I am using Photoshop CC on an iMac, with Mountain Lion. I have no issues with the software and it runs perfectly, so this is just a query really.
If I save an image which has Alpha Channels contained within it, following processing, when I then reopen the image, the preview of the image in the "Open" dialogue window appears as a sort of negative, almost as if it has one of the masks on it. The image opens fine though, and looks as I left it.
If I save the image without Alpha Channels, by unselecting them in the Save As dialogue window, and saving the image as a copy, when I reopen this one, the preview of the image is fine.
I'm hoping someone may have some ideas.
    I have attached a couple of images below to illustrate;
    With Alpha Channels:
    Without Alpha Channels:

    Hi Chris
    Thank you for the reply.
There are definitely Alpha Channels in the image as I created them during the retouching.
I think you're right, as I decided to investigate further and open Bridge, (which I never normally use), and the previews in that show up correctly.
So overall not too fussed about it as long as the actual image file is fine, which it is.
    Thank you again.
    Much appreciated.

I have recently migrated from a macbook with 10.6 to a macbook air with 10.7. I used migration assistant via wifi.
The problem arises both on newly downloaded images as well as images that were transferred via migration assistant.
The file permission is 755, and File->View permissions looks perfectly fine.
Any idea what is causing this and how to I prevent this from happening again?

    Hi Linc,
thank you for the suggestion, but unfortunately it did not help. For the top directory, and all subsequent directories, I have read&write (755) permissions, as well as for the files that i can not open.
This appears to happen randomly. Some directories are affected, some are not, and it appears to happen to all files in certain directories.
Interestingly, if I control-click and select e.g. Explorer, I can view the image. Also, if I copy the file to my Desktop, I can also view the image. So it only happens to Preview in certain directories.

  • Photoshop-When opening image without tab view, image opens with only a portion in view

I having an issue with CC.
When electing in the preferences to not open image in Tabs. The images open with only about 25% of the image area showing. Forcing me to (command) 0 for full to screen preview or (command) +/- to see the image.
I am not talking about seeing the image at 100% resolution just the entire image within the floating window without having to command before view.
Sidenote: Adobe Customer Service is all based in India. I spent 4 hours on the phone only to hear that this is that way photoshop works.
There would be no logical explanation for this. Since the first version of Photoshop this has not been the case.
I think this should be called view porn with wife in the room mode. Other than that I see no point.
    Can anyone help?

  • Double-click and drag don't open image files

    Hi,
I'm having problems loading images in Preview and Adobe apps (CS1).
From Finder, I can double click to open an image in Preview but it only opens the first image, and won't load more than one. I've tried changing the preferences to "open groups of images in the same window" or "open all images in one window." Neither solve the problem.
My adobe apps won't open a file when I double click it from the finder at all. I have to use the "open" command from within the application to open an image file.
I am a designer and photographer trying to browse groups of images at once and this is driving me crazy! I have tried copying over different preference files from my old computer (a powerbook G4), and I'm wondering if I either failed to copy the right one or copied something that is interfering with the shortcut actions.
The interesting part is, that the same actions are working fine for other kinds of files -- for example, I can open multiple word documents by double clicking their icons in Finder.
    Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.
    Amy Hengst

    Hi Amy
What kind of files are these? If I wanted to open multiple images in Preview (be they BMP, JPEG, PSD, whatever) I would select them and drag onto the Preview icon in the Dock which opens the first image in a single window with the remaining images in a 'thumbnail drawer' to the right (like you get with big PDF documents).
On the other hand if I double-click, 10 to 1 it would launch Photoshop which I use as an image editor only, not an image manager or viewer. You can of course change the application which any document uses to open it, with the Get Info window. But if you use more than one application (as I do - PS to edit, Preview to just view), then click-and-drag onto the Dock might be your best bet.

  • CS4 won't open images w/Mavericks; no error message, just no image. Anyone else?

I got a message from Apple a couple of weeks ago to "download Mavericks for free!" and figured, why not? What I didn't anticipate was that my Photoshop CS4 would stop working immediately afterwards, a fact that has disrupted my work and caused big problems for me. Not happy.
I can open the Raw preview screen but when I click to open the image from there, nothing. No image. Yet when I go to shut down Photoshop, it asks me if I want to save the file. Which I can't see! Even jpgs will not open.
The guy at the Genius Bar ran diagnostics on my computer and all was fine. Told me to uninstall then reinstall Photoshop, but that didn't fix it. He said if I wanted to downgrade back down to Lion, I'd have to have my entire compture wiped clean. NOT a good solution. So...
I called Adobe. The fellow there didn't have an answer for me either; also suggested doing an uninstall/install. Told him that didn't help. He said he had no suggestions other than to buy CS6. So...
I've been perusing forums and chat rooms and not finding anything that matches my particular problem. Unlike other users on CS4/Mavericks threads, I don't get an error message regarding licensing and I did download the newer Java (per a prompt after initially downloading Mavericks). At this point I'm assuming CS 4 just doesn't work with Mavericks (I have a 2-year-old MacBook Pro) and I'm really annoyed. Had I known this would happen, I wouldn't have downloaded Mavericks; my computer was working just fine and right now I can't afford new software. So...
Anyone have any suggestions for making CS4 work when the licensing error ISN'T being triggered?

    Eustace: thanks for your response.
I trashed the com.adobe.Photoshop.plist, as instructed, then tried to open a file. I was so excited because it opened! Then - to check - I closed Photoshop, opened it up again, tried again and.... nothing. Back to the invisible files. Grrrr.
I notice there is also a com.adobe.Photoshop.plist.lockfile. Should I trash that as well?

  • Images not previewing properly in Bridge CS4

I just did a reformat & reinstall of my whole system. I opened Bridge to get back to work and none of my images will preview accurately in Bridge. They just show as horizontal and vertical pixelated representations of the image. I did not have a problem with Bridge until after the reinstall. Anyone have any ideas?
System details: Dell Dimension 8250 (I know, it's a dionsaur, but it works...for now), Windows XP Pro SP3, 1.5gb ram, Intel P4 3.06GHz HT
    Thanks, Dana

    Hi Dana,
Which settings are you considering and what are the performance issues?
You can optimize for certain workflows that will adjust processor intensive work, such as only generating large previews when displayed. If you're strictly talking about video card accelerated features, I think it's more a matter of On or Off as opposed to performance tuning. I just did a quick look and with video card acceleration enabled, in Full Screen Preview you can pan the image at magnifications much smoother.

If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.

  • Opening images in photoshop

Before when I would open an image on my desktop it would automatically open that image into Photoshop.  Now it opens the image in preview.  I now have to drag the image to the PS icon to open it in PS.  How can I get back to where the image is automatically opened in PS?

Right click on the sort of file you want to open and select "Get Info". About half way down the Info panel will be the name of the Default programme for that file type. Select "Photoshop" instead and then click "Change all". Photoshop will then be the default instead of Preview.
