Opening iMovie 6 files in iMovie 8

I have 4 files I created in iMovie 6, and all I need to do is export as is- no editing or anything. I thought I'd open them in iMovie 8 as a way to start to use the new program. But It won't open them. I've tried "Import Movies" but the import button stays grayed out.

What compression format are they in? iMovie '08 will only import files it can edit.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?

  • IMovie '11 will no longer show project or open the project file

Upon finishing a project, I was ready to do a Share > Export Movie command, and opted first to do a restart on my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie).
Now my project no longer shows up in the projects pane!
While the import of the original footage still exists in the Event Library pane, the project is nowhere to be found in the Projects Library pane.
In addition, while the project file that sits in my iMovie Projects folder is there, it will not open!
When I option click it to open with iMovie, iMovie launches normally (displaying no messages) but does not show the project in the projects pane!
What has happened here?  The iMovie Projects folder is on my internal hard drive and I have not ever moved any files around. Is there any way to get it back?
I have tried to open my project file on a different computer that is networked in the same room, but the same happens: iMovie launches normally, however the project does not appear in the the Projects Library pane.
As a test, I have created a couple new projects that I have named "Test1" and "Test2" and they indeed show up normally every time I launch iMovie or do an "open with iMovie" command from the iMovie Projects folder.  But my origional project just doesn't work. Please help!
If this is of any help: my origional project comprises of a 26 minute MOV file that I have simply imported in iMovie and have added subtitles (no transitions).  I had been working for two days on it, and there were 2 times early on when I had to force quit iMovie because I was getting the spinning ball - I was worried about whether the changes were saved, but each time they were indeed saved and I could access the project normally. (I had considered this was caused by a shortage of memory, so I did not think anything of it.) Since then and up to the moment of the problem, I had occasionally shut down or restarted my computer (by first doing a File > Quit in iMovie) with no problems up to now.
Looking through the forum, I have tried 1) logging in/out, 2) logging in as a visitor, 3) creating a new admin account, in addition to 4) subtracting the iMovie preferences file from the Library, but nothing has worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Can not open iMovie files

I have a strange problem. I just got a new Intel iMac. I moved all my files over tot he new system, no problem. On my old system, I kept some files out side of the users folder so my wife and I can both access them (iTunes, iDVD, iMove, etc)
I have been running like this years with out issue. But the new system seems to have problems with this arrangement. The problem is limited to iMovie, and limited to my wife account (not scoring any point here ).
I keep these “shared” project files in users folder, but outside of any home folder. So the folders look like this.
    ~\users\iMove
    ~\users\iDVD
    ~\users\iTunes
Also under users are our individual home folders
    ~\users\sunil
    ~users\tish
When my wife tries to open a iMove file she gets an error that the disk is full or she does not have permission to write to this folder. This only happens with iMovie files, the others open fine. From my login I can open iMovie files, as well as other files.
I have checked the permission on the users folder, the iMovie folder and she seems to have rights to read and write to them. Additionally we are both Admins on the system.
Here is what I have tried already (none resolved the issue)
    • Repaired permissions on the volume
    • Verified permission, she has read/write to the folder as well are the files she is trying to open, she is also an admin.
    • Optimized the system (onyx)
    • Reapplied permission, including subfolders.
    • Moved files to another location.
    • Moved files into her home folder
    • Moved files into the shared folder.
    My Config
    Intel iMac 1.5GB
    250GB HDD (125GB) free
    OSX 10.4.7
    iLife 06
    Any ideas?

Sorry, I don't have any firm answers for this situation, but I can offer some guesses.
iMovie seems particularly sensitive to permission issues. Problems can occur when moving projects from startup disk to startup disk, as you've apparently done.
The issues are complicated by the fact that an iMovie 5/iMovie 6 project is a package, a special kind of file that behaves like a folder. The package contains other files and folders.
When you use the Get Info window to assign permissions to the package, the new permissions aren't necessarily applied to the contents of the package. Those items retain their old permission settings, which I suspect is what causes the problem for iMovie. (The Get Info window lets us apply new permissions to the CONTENTS of a folder, but that doesn't work on a package.)
To change permissions inside the package, try this:
    • In the Finder, create a duplicate of the project. Work on the copy.
    • Select the name of copy and remove the suffix ".iMovieProject" from the name. Tell the dialog window that opens to accept the change. The iMovie project icon will disappear, replaced by the normal Finder folder icon. The project will now behave like a folder.
    • Select the folder and use the Get Info window to set permissions for the folder, then press the "Apply to enclosed items" button to apply those permissions to the items it contains.
    • Re-select the name of the folder and add back the suffix ".iMovieProject". When you accept the change, the folder icon will change back into an iMovie project icon.
    • Try opening the project in iMovie. With luck, everything will now work.
When using an external disk to store projects, another solution is to use the Get Info window (for the disk) to set the disk to ignore permissions.

  • How can I open a .mov file with iMovie?

    Hi,
I keep trying to open a .mov file in iMovie and it isn't doing it. Is that not a recognized file extension? Should I convert the video file somehow?
    Thanks!

.mov is just a container for a variety of video codecs, some of which are not recognized by iMovie.  You will need to convert it first with a third party app such as Media Converter (which is free, see:   http://media-converter.sourceforge.net).
Another free app  VideoSpec (see:  http://videospec.free.fr) is useful for identifying all the details of a video clip

  • When I open iMovie, the app searches for missing iPhoto files.  These are files I deleted.  I have to close about 30 dialog boxes before I can start using iMovie.  How do I make this stop?

When I open iMovie (09), the app searches for missing iPhoto files.  These are files I deleted.  I have to close about 30 dialog boxes before I can start using iMovie.  How do I make this stop?

So it seems the issue is when iMovie is wanting to creat thumbnails, if I ask it to ignore then it's fine but if not it hangs up searching for the video file.

  • Imovie will not open a large file.

i'm relatively new to this, since I've only had my Mac for 3 weeks, now, I've been working on a wedding video using Imovie. Over last week, I have run into issues where the file won't open. I did have it on an external harddrive, and had no issues up to this point. The file is 33.9gig in size. I have since copied it to my laptop and ensured I had enough room for the virtual memory, now when I open Imovie, it says it's loading the file and I can see the virtual memory start ticking up, then after about a minute, Imoive shuts down. Any solutions would be greatly apprciated before I throw a weeks worth of work out and try to do it again.. Thanks in advance, James

First make sure the disk the project resided/resides on uses the Mac OS Extended disk format. Then make sure there are no third-party iMovie plug-ins or QuickTime add-ons that might be causing problems for iMovie 6. More here:

  • Trouble opening mpeg movie files and importing into iMovie 08

Hi, I'd be most grateful if anyone could provide any solutions to the following problem...
A friend has emailed me two .mpeg movie files which are parts 1&2 of a home movie which I want to edit in iMovie and burn to DVD. The footage was shot on a miniHDV camcorder (not sure which brand).
Opening in QT 7.6 gives the following warning dialogue: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file."
The files will however play fine in VLC Media Player, but not in mpeg Streamclip (the file appears to play but the viewer is blank with no audio/video). Trying to import into iMovie is unsuccessful. The iMovie browser won't let me choose the files or drag/drop.
Any ideas. I read somewhere that iMovie 08 can't import mpeg-1 files. Do I need to convert the files, and if so how?
Thanks in advance, and apologies - this is my first experience of video editing.

I have QT Player but it hasn't "kicked in" when I try to import my videos.
Something called PIXE VRF Browser is supposed to help in the conversion. The QT MPEG-2 thingy won't install until I buy QT Pro, according to what I get on the screen.
Sounds like you have too many applications trying to do the same thing. Either use the Pixela Pixe VRF Browser or use the Mac applications (Mac OS Finder, Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component w/MPEG Streamclip) but not both to do the same job. The Apple Finder should be able to copy multiplexed VOB/MPEG-2 files from either your PC burned DVD or directly from your camcorder DVD to your MAC hard drive where MPEG Streamclip/QT MPEG-2 component can convert them for use in iMovie '08. Frankly, I don't understand your work work flow or why you want to import your files to a GOP editor in the first place if your goal is to do frame level editing in iMovie '08.
As for Jon's suggestion, I am on dial-up and cannot download big files at 3-4 Kbps snail pace.
What does this have to do with importing your camcorder files to your PC and re-burning them to DVD for use on your Mac? If I were to make a recommendation here, it would have been to use an external hard drive here rather than DVDs for transporting files between platforms and then only if you want the files available to both. If your goal is only to edit them in iMovie '08 or iMovie HD on your Mac, then why not cut out the "middleman" platform?
I wish I could purchase these updates on DVDs but the genies couldn't even tell me if there's such a service.
Totally confused here. Are you saying your DVR-D300 files were commercial produced or that you are dealing with torrent downloads of copy-written material? These are two separate issues with facets beyond the scope of this forum.
As for "platform", I have iMovie08. iMac does not read the mini RAM disks when I connect the camera to a USB port.
Are you saying the Finder doesn't read them or that iMovie '08 doesn't read them? Do you "finalize" your DVDs before trying to read them via USB as the manual states may be necessary as indicated on page 150 of your manual?
How can I find out that iMovie09 will let me import and edit my Panasonic videos?
You could try going to the Apple site and checking the the tapeless camcorder compatibility chart. The Panasonic DVR-D300 is specifically listed along with a hot link for additional information. However, this still won't help you you don't finalize the content.

  • Opening iMovie throws hundreds of clip files in trash

When opening iMovie it seems to hang for quite a while. Noticed also it was creating hundreds of clip files into the trash while program is opening. None of these clip files have any video on them and show zero K for file size. Also camera is being recognized and controls operate camera (Canon zr40) but no video comes through - blue screen. Had functioned fine in the past. Know camera is functioning fine and firewire connection is good because I tried it on another Mac. Also camera works fine with iMovie 8. Trashed plist file and did the garageband thing with no luck. (Problems existed before install of iMovie 8). Any ideas as to what is going on?

Patrick - no external drive is hooked up to the computer. Another thing - when it was working fine I only had a single account on the computer. I later set up several accounts for my kids and hadn't had an opportunity to use iMovie until just recently when I found it didn't work. I deleted the accounts in case that had something to do with it but still no change.

  • Opening iMovie '08 files in '06

I just installed iMovie 08 so I use a AVCHD camera. Works great. But '08 seems to lacking many features, plus its really confusing (totally different from '06). I thought you could import into 08, save then open and edit in 06. I can't even figure out how to "save as" in 08. I found the 08 files (automatically named "my first project" and "event....") but can't open either in 06. HELP!
ps. I posted this first in the 08 forum and realized its really a 06 question.

But '08 seems to lacking many features
Many reviews of iMovie 08 recommend using both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.
I do find that iMovie 08 is "feature reduced" and not as DVD friendly compared to iMovie 06. iMovie 06 is "timeline based", iMovie 08 is "clip based". The lack of a true timeline in IM08 is hard to get used to for some.
iMovie 08 is NOT an upgrade of iMovie 06. It is a completely new application. iMovie 08 is better for absolute beginners that don't want to burn a DVD. Most others will like iMovie 06 for its far greater editing power and ease of making DVDs. (Like creating Chapter Markers and Share to iDVD.)
When iLife 08 is installed, all of the old applications are automatically deleted EXCEPT iMovie 06, because Apple WANTS you to have it.
I thought you could import into 08, save then open and edit in 06.
iMovie 08 has two areas: events and projects. Events are just collections of clips. If you import DV video into iMovie 08, they end up as DV clips, at original quality in events. You can import these clips into iMovie 06 projects without quality loss by just starting a new project and importing the clip files from the iMovie 08 Events folder. This however makes a complete copy of the clip inside the iMovie '06 project file.
In the Finder, open the "Events" folder associated with your captured/imported files, Copy/Move them to another location, discard the "Event" from iMovie '08, close the application, Open iMovie 06 and import/Drag and Drop as you normally would.
I think it's fairly common to use iMovie 08 has an import engine only but then do your editing with iMovie 06 (when importing DV I use IM06).
Voltaic can also convert AVCHD. cost: US $30

iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.

When I open iMovie, it says that quick time componets are missing, "Please re-install"...When I do that it says that ONLY 9 is supported and I have to have that first. What gives with that?

What version of iPhoto are you using?
This is the the first time I have ever launched it.
Does that mean there are no photos in the library? If so move it to the Trash bin in the Dock and launch iPhoto again.
If there are photos in the library do the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • How to open iMovie 10.0.7?

    Hello everybody,
After the upgrade in version 10.0.7, I lost all my movies... how to open iMovie if it crash at the opening?

No bootable clone backup from before the update?     OK.  I think the following files and folders would need replacing with versions dated before you downloaded iMovie 10.0.7:
    Applications/iMovie.app
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovieapp.........plist   [deleting the 10.0.7 version sufficient - will be recreated by 10.0.6
    ~/Library/iMovie
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.imovieApp
I think this covers everything but I can't be certain.  Keep copies of the 10.0.7 versions so you can if necessary restore the status quo
Before trying all of the above its probably worth just deleting the current  .plist file (with iMovie not running), rebooting, then trying iMovie 10.0.7 again (if you have already tried this).
Failing that I would delete iMovie 10.0.7 and re-install - several people have reported problems with download and its just possible that something went wrong the first time.
If this still doesn't work it may be worth systematically removing event folders from the problem library with the finder (iMovie not running) because there is probably one event that iMovie 10.0.7 'doesn't like'
