Opening/importing m4a files

I have a large number of audiobooks as m4a format files. When I open them in iTunes they appear as music files in my library. Is it possible to set iTunes to recognize m4a files as audiobooks?
Thanks for your help.
Paul.

Thank you, one and all, for your responses. I have already been doing what you suggest, but you have missed the point which prompted me to make this posting: LARGE NUMBER of m4a files (note: LARGE >= 200) - I have halted after 25 or so awaiting an alternative. So back to my original question:
Is there a way of instructing iTunes 12 to recognize m4a files as audiobooks and NOT music (so that I don't have to alter each one's GET INFO>OPTIONS manually)? It seems this is a default in iTunes but I can't seem to see where this might be changed (an ini file, perhaps, or a registry setting?).
Paul.

  • How do I open a .m4a file from Mail into Music app?

How do I open a .m4a file from Mail into Music app?
I mixed down a song from my band's latest session and saved it as a .m4a file (Apple AAC Audio format) and I e-mailed it to myself. Then on my phone I opened the e-mail message in Mail and held a long-press down on the attached .m4a file. But I do not see the option to open it up into the Music app. It only gives me the options of iMovie, WeChat, and USB Disk. Why would I want to open it up in those? It's a song. It should open up into the Music app so I can play it. What the heck?
Please don't tell me that I have to use iTunes to do this and sync my phone to my computer, because I *do not* want to add these songs to my iTunes library. They are *practice session tracks* that I want to listen to then delete later when we have new versions.
If there is no way to open them into the Music app, then is there a music player app I can get somewhere that will let me simply save audio files from Mail into it, and use it as a player for those songs? That's all I want to do.
The only reasonable workaround I have found so far is to save them as .mp4 audio files, which the iPhone thinks are movies, so it lets me save them into the camera roll as Videos.
Voice Memos would be acceptable as a place for them to be able to open into as well, but of course that's also not on the options list. Sigh.

Why is that such an issue for you?
Why do people insist on replying to threads without even reading the original post? I explained it there already!
I don't have to use iTunes to save an image from Mail into my camera roll, or to save a PDF from Mail into iBooks. Why should I have to use iTunes to save a music file into Music app?
But I'll repeat it since evidently you can't be asked to read the original posts before spamming a thread with questions that have already been answered. I *do not* want to add these songs to my iTunes library.
My iTunes library is a sacred temple into which I only allow to enter the very best and highest-fidelity musical recordings of all time. I refuse to sully and soil my iTunes library with crappy practice mixdowns from my band, etc.
Want to know why? Because I like to be able to hit "shuffle all" on my iTunes library and know that something that will improve my existence will emanate forth from this amazing device that I have invested thousands of dollars into (yes, I count my cell phone plan amongst the expenses).
I shall not have the crappy burner mixdown tracks from my band's practice sessions come up every five songs (we generate TONS of these... literally hundreds... and they are all high-bitrate .m4a tracks in the 10-15 MB range). I let iTunes keep my music folder organized on my computer. It makes copies of everything being placed into it, and I don't want 159 GB of copies of burner tracks hiding like roaches throughout my temple. We don't name these files anything sensible (in fact the guy who mixes them down intentionally gives them random weird names) and they lack metadata. So there's no easy way to delete them back out of iTunes once they're in there. It's a huge pain; I used to do it, but I swore it off years ago and *I'm never going back!*
The REAL question is, why does Apple force me to have to use iTunes—the most convoluted, kludgy piece of bloatware ever to issue forth from Cupertino—to do something as simple as adding an MP3 from Mail into the Music app on my phone? Why can't there be something simple—something equivalent to the Camera Roll inside the Music app, not only for the files I want to save from Mail, but also for my Garage Band exports, not to mention all the exports from all the various synthesizer, drum machine, and recording apps I use on a daily basis in iOS?
It would be awfully nice to be able to play the songs I've recorded right in the Music app without having to go through the rigamarole of adding those files to my iTunes library, tagging them with metadata, syncing, etc. etc. yadda yadda yadda—just to delete them again as soon as I've synced so they don't pollute my computer's iTunes library!
I bought Apple for ease of use, not so I would be forced to jump through a million hoops just do to something that ought to take one tap to accomplish!  That's ridiculous!

  • Import m4a file without metadata

    Using latest itunes 11.0.1.
While it is possible to import a wav file without metadata it seems not to be impossible to import a m4a file without metadata.
The wav file will be stored under "unknown .." folders and displayed in the itunes windows. Now metadata can be added
    via itunes "information".
Does anyone know how to achieve the same with m4a files?

there's no exclude data in 9i you have to use normal export/import with option called row=N like the above post said .
if you need more help about export/import use

  • AudioFileOpenURL really bad performance when opening big *.m4a files

I did some testing for a project of mine and noticed that opening a big .m4a file with AudioFileOpenURL is really slow.
I tested opening about 25000 audio files.
All of them, except large mp4 podcasts like the engadget podcast, open really fast.
There seems to be a direct connection between the size of the file and the time it takes for AudioFileOpenURL to open it.
Files that are around 3MB have no noticable delay and files around 30MB will take seconds to open.
While opening AudioFileOpenURL consumes a lot of cpu.
I tried setting the correct fileTypeHint but that makes no difference at all.
Is there any explanation for this behaviour?
I can not continue with my project until i'm able to open all audio files in a reasonable time.
Maybe somebody has an idea how I can speed this up.

    Certainly a reasonable concern...
The question at this point is, How are the reports going to be used and deployed once they are in production?
I'd look at it from that direction.
For example... They may be able to dump the data directly to another database on a separate server that would insulate the main enterprise server. This would allow the main server to run the necessary queries during off peak hours and would isolate any reporting activity to a "reporting database".
This would also keep the data secure and encrypted (it would continue to enjoy the security provided by an RDBMS). Text & csv files can be copied, emailed, altered & deleted by anyone who sees them. Placing them in encrypted .zip folders prevents them from being read by external applications.
<Hope you liked the sales pitch I wrote for you to give to the client... =^)
If all else fails and you're stuck using the csv files, at least see if they can get it all on one file. Joining the 2 files is killing you performance wise... More so than using 1 massive file.

  • Importing m4a files in fcp

I am making a movie in fcp an need to import music. M4a files do not import. Why? And what do I need to do?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB - 100GB Hard Drive

I did convert to AIFF in iTunes and still sayswhen trying to import (File Error:1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown) Also when importing, it says readable files and my files are not highlighted. Only when switching to all files I have access to them. But that file error appears as above.

  • Unable to Open/Import Multiple Files in Audtion 3 - Old Bug?

As stupid as it might sound I can't seem to open more then single files from the Files Window in Audition 3.0.1. You can select them (shift+click or right click) but they don't open. However if you drop them from explorer or "open file with" they do open but then the next issue emerges.... They are not saved in the session file UNLESS you use them in the Multitrack View!! Now is this me or is it an old bug or something? (I've recently updated from Audition 1.5).
The files I've tried are mainly wav-files and mp3. Same result though.

Ooo? So UNSED files are NOT reloaded in the session file! Well, thanks for
clearing that up (Still, I must say it makes it a bit frustrating though!).
My impression was that, as I used Audition 1.5 before, I was quit sure it
was possible there! But then again it's been a while since I used that
program too in a major scale. (I've been working in much After Effects
lately, wich of course has another handling of files).
As for the Files (Edit) View, I still can not open more than ONE file at the
time from that location - regardles of Multitrack or Edit View, really!
ShiftClick, CtrlClick, Right Click - you name it. Yes, select them but
open? No can do!! Now, as I mentioned before there is the workaround when I
select the files in explorer (Windows) and then drops them in Auditions
File View - they all then load accordingly (Or you can aslo use "open file
with" then point to Audition). Otherwise, once the files are imported,
there's no problem working with them in Multitrack/Edit and do all the rest.
Yet, it is a bit absured though and hard to tell whether it's a bug or not
    (?). Virus?
    Anyway, thanks a bunch!

I'm not sure I'm understanding your problem with the Files window.  To try
this, I opened eight files in the Files window in Edit View.  From there I
could drag any one of them into the Edit window with no problems.  I also
was able to drag them into different tracks in Multi Track View.  I also put
files into the Files window, CTRL+clicked all of them and dragged all of
them at once into the Multi Track View successfully.  I repeated this doing
SHIFT+click.  I then put into the Files window tracks that have different
sample rates.  They all went into the Multi Track without incident (after
the program resampled the unmatching tracks to conform to the session's
    sample rate).
    >
Yes, you are correct that the files not used in the session are not
reloaded into the Files window when the session is reopened.

  • How to import m4a files in a USB drive and play them using iTune?

I have set the target directory of iTune to that USB drive, iTune just does not play them.  The length of the playing is awful long.  But in reality , they are merely 1min long reading when I listen to them using Window Media Player.

CS4 is much older than Windows 8. CS4 is meant to work on XP or Vista. Getting it to run on Windows 7 was a bit of an issue, so I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that you have CS4 running on Windows 8 at all.
It's also possible that a new camera records in a codec that such an old version of AE doesn't understand.
Make sure you're running the latest update to your version of AE. You're on version 9, so make sure you've run the Adobe After Effects CS4 9.0.3 Update (I would not suggest updating in the middle of a project though, as any changes might break AE). I would like to reiterate: you're running a version that was released six years ago on an operating system that was released much more recently. So, be careful how you tread. However, if you're not running 9.0.3, you're missing some bug fix updates that might solve your problem.
I would suggest upgrading to a newer version of AE.
That being said, as Dave mentions, CS4 and earlier had lots of trouble with MPEG-4 and other codecs that used interframe compression. Can you open the files in your version of Premiere? If so, you can use Premiere or the Adobe Media Encoder to convert to a proper intermediate codec. MOV is just a container format. QuickTime with the PNG codec will work in After Effects CS4 with no problems as will the other codecs Dave mentions.

  • Can´t open/import any file like jpgs, tiffs, psd!?!

so strange, but my indesign cs5 does not support any files like normal jpgs and tiffs!!

    thx for your help guys!

You have to have some inkling of InDesign before going to work with it. Do you have any previous experience with it? Are you aware of the Online Help? (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/indesign/cs/using/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6bc4a.h tml in particular).

Any time I try to open or import a TIFF file I get an error - "Could not open/import the file. An internal error occured.  I have tried to unistall and reinstall 2 times now and the exact same thing.  I am first opening the file in LR5 then moving to PS CC for fine tuning then if I wanna add text or what not I try to move into fireworks but to no avail.  Any suggestions on what I can do to correct this issue?  Thanks in advance.

If you click on the "down" arrow in the Google search box and then move your cursor to the desired term in search history while still left-clicking on your mouse, and then hold the cursor over the desired search term for a couple of seconds, it works.
Clearly a bug that I hope they will fix.

  • In Adobe premiere elements 12 it wont let me add a m4a file. It says that "the importer reported a generic error". Please help.

please help, I need to make a video and cant get in my music.

    tuckey2012
For background information, what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on?
I could ask you for a lot of details to build a troubleshooting plan. However, in this instance with .m4a file and "importer reported a generic error", I am going to cut to what I believe your workflow problem to be.
You are working with iTunes music. To use them in Premiere Elements (any version), please convert them to .wav file in iTunes.
    To do that....
    a. Open iTunes and go to Music - File Menu/Add File To Library
    b. Edit Menu/Preferences/General and there click on Import Settings
    c. In the Import Settings dialog, go to Import Using and set for WAV Encoder.
    d. OK out of that area.
In the Music Section/Songs, right click your import, select Create WAV Version
Then right click the WAV Version, select Copy, and then Paste it to the computer desktop
from where you import it into Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets
from where you drag it to one of the audio tracks.
Please let us know if that works for you.
    Thanks.

  • How to import or Open folders or files in imovie

Hi I used to be a Windows User , Now a Happy Mac User However I have all my Clips that I use to make movies In 1 Folder all are AVI files , Now I can work out how to Import 1 Clip but how can I import the Complete Folder , Eg, I make U.water Movies , I have a Folder marked Sharks with 10 different Shark Clips in , Another Marked Clown Fish with 20 clips in ,
I want to Import or Just Open to use the whole Folder with these Files In , If I have to do 1 at a Time it will take Forever as I have over 400 Clips of Various Marine Animals , and don't want to retype Name files etc again ..
So if anyone can help me to Open or Import these so I can use as Is that would be great ( most other programs I tried you can just open the Folder from the Source ??)
    Any Help would be Great
    Thanks
    Mark

I have all my Clips that I use to make movies In 1 Folder all are AVI files
The first step is to ensure your AVI file containers hold iMovie '08 "edit" compatible files. For instance, an AVI file with M-JPEG video and Unsigned Integer audio would be compatible but an AVI file with M-JPEG video and adaptive PCD (ADPCM) would not be compatible. Once you know all the files in a given folder are compatible (or have been converted to any of the iMovie '08 compatible compression formats), then you can proceed to their actual import.
I want to Import or Just Open to use the whole Folder with these Files In , If I have to do 1 at a Time it will take Forever as I have over 400 Clips of Various Marine Animals , and don't want to retype Name files etc again
To import the files simply select the "Import Movies..." File menu option. When the window opens, create a new Event using an appropriate name (e.g., "Sharks" or "Clown Fish"). Now navigate to and open the source folder containing the files you wish to import to the newly named Event. If you want to import all of the files, simply Click on the first file in the folder and then Shift-Click the last file in the folder to select the first, last, and all intervening files for copy. If you only wish to import select files from the folder for "batch" import, then Click the first file and use Command-Click for each additional file you wish to add to your import list. Remember that while copying large lists of files may not be a time consuming process, thumbnailing them can take a long time depending on the compression formats involved.

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys.  Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it.  It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process.  Other PowerPC to Intel migration issues are covered here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

I want my raw files to remain raw files when I import them into Photoshop.  My raw files automatically open up into JPEG files.  How do I stop this from happening.
    Thank you

I’m not very experienced with Adobe Camera RAW (and by the way there’s a Forum for that specifically), but what you describe sounds implausible to me.
If one opens a RAW file with ACR one produces a psd file which one certainly can save as a jpg, but it is not »opened« as a jpg.
Anyway one can set ACR to open images as Smart Objects, thus maintaining them as RAW-data in a psd file.
    But maybe I’m misunderstanding you.
