Opening in code view in CS5

A while back I posted a discussion seeking information about having PHP files open in code view instead of design view. (CS4).
I found out that I was able to tell PHP files to open in code view, but for some reason the creators of DW saw it fit to fix it so that if you force files to open in code view, then you could not switch to design view by any means.
As a PHP coder I rearely go into design or split/design view, but I do have an occaisional need to do so.
My question is, has this been fixed in CS5? In other words, can I have my PHP files set to ALWAYS open in code view, but still have the option to simply click on the design/split button and go into design mode?
Thanks,
Cy

I did as you suggested and this morning when I opened DW, then opened the PHP file I was last editing yesterday. The same thing happened. It opened the file in design view.
This particular file is a class and would never really be looked at in design. Nevertheless, though I NEVER put it in design, it opened it that way. So the argument that a file will open in the last view it was in is not valid here either.
I just don't get it. Everybody I have told about this agrees that it is down-right unreasonable to lock out the ability to chose Split or Design just because you told DW to always open PHP files on code view from the preferences. The idea wreaks of a bunch of programmers deciding on usability, which they evidently don't understand in their own little world. I've worked at a major software development company and I know far too well the mentality of programmers who develop far beyond my capabilities.
DW devs, please take note: Just because we want to force open a file in CODE view doesn't mean we don't want to switch to design view at some point for that same file. Forcing us to open files in design is like telling us you know better, and believe me, you don't.
It's really simple - Allow us to set a file type to open only in code view, but don't lock us out by disabling the buttons to switch to split or design if we want.
Cy
PS: A pic of what happens when I force .php files to open in code view:
As you can see, Split and Design are disabled. WHY force this?

  • Always open files in code view (with option to switch back to design/split)

    I almost never use design view and it's very annoying that Dreamwaver CS4 can't seem to understand and remember that. I can be editing a file one day in code view, and when I open the file again the next day it opens in design view!? Is there a setting for this somewhere or is this a bug? Any suggestions for a solution?
    Someone suggested I add the relevant suffixes in the "Open in code view" field (Preferences > File Types / Editors) but Adobe has decided that if I choose to always open a certain file type in code view via this method, I will not be allowed to temporarlily switch to design/split view.
    Any other suggestions?

    All I can suggest is that you post an official feature request via the official form and wait for Adobe to implement something in CS6 or CS7 (assuming the feature set for CS5 is set in stone by now).

    The preference to open in Code view prevents that page type from being opened any other way. It means open ONLY in Code view.
    The way that Dreamweaver opens documents follows a logical pattern. If no document is open, the first document is opened in whichever view was active when the last document was closed or Dreamweaver was shut down. If a document is already open, Dreamweaver opens the next document in the same view.
    If you always work in Split view, as I do, all documents will open in Split view. The only exception is if you open a file that is set to open in Code view only. If that document is active when you open a new document, it will also be in Code view.
    It's logical and simple to understand. If you don't like the way it works, file an enhancement request through the official form at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.

  • File will not open in Design View

    I needed to add new file types, which I have done before with CS4 and CS5, but it doesn't seem to be working with CS6. I've followed the instructions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/change-add-recognized-file-extensions.html
    but after restarting Dreamweaver CS6 the 'Design View' tab is still greyed out and I can only view in code view. What am I missing?

    David: the filename(s) are not listed in the 'Open in code view' panel.
    Okay, 6 hours later I decide to do what the instructions said NOT to do. Which is alter the exentions.txt file and the MMDocumentTypes.xml file directly IN the Dreamweaver CS6 folder. (original instructions said NOT to change them there because the program doesn't look there first. It looks in the User/Library/blah/blah folder.) Well, how about that, I change the files directly IN the Dreamweaver CS6 folder and now my files are available in 'Split' and 'Design' views. This should be helpful to others trying to add new extensions to their list.
    Please let someone know they should change your instructions on the Dreamweaver website.

  • Turning a 'code view' only file to a 'design view' file

    Thanks for reading.
    I am using Dreamweaver 8. I have INC files that I would to be
    able to edit in design view as opposed to strictly code view. (lots
    of tables and I'd rather just visually edit the cells) I can view
    them in the PHP files they are called from (which is a start) but I
    need to be able to edit just the INC file in design view; not view
    it in the PHP file and then open the INC file in code view.
    I have gone through the help file and done the following
    (restarting dreamweaver each time):
    1) removed INC from the list at dreamweaver >>
    Preferences >> FileTypes / Editors >> Open in Code View
    2) checked to make sure the INC extention is in the
    extension.txt file (it is by default) I've tried moving it to be an
    html file, leaving it as a server sife include, and creating a new
    'include file' distinction for it. None of it works.
    3) Going through the rest of the documentation isn't terribly
    helpful. It mentions files and folders I can not find. Most of the
    decent documentation I can find is for MX; but the files it points
    me to don't seem exist in my installation.
    I'm sure this is a really easy problem with a simple
    solution; but I am overlooking it. Do I need to find more folders
    from my installation? Do I create these folders manually as I need
    them? What files go in them? Getting this figured out so I can make
    edits to INC files in design view would help me out tremendously.
    Thanks for any help.

    Save them as *.html rather than *.inc files....

  • Dreamweaver CS 5.5 Crash on Code View

    Hi, I've installed CS 5.5 Master Collection Trial on a freshly installed Windows 7 x64. When opening a file in Dreamviewer it opens up in Design view which is ok and everything works well but switching to Code View the Dreamweaver stops responding and Windows tries to find a solution to the problem and the only thing I can do is close the app. I've tried to add the extension html so that at the opening of the file, the file would open in Code view immediately, but that doesn's help.
    I've tried to delete the Configuration directory in Windows for Dreamweaver but that doesn't help either...
    Does anyone have a suggestion??
    Thanks!!!

    Hi, well it took me a while but I've maanged to figure out the solution... and of course the problem to this crash. After I've installed some new fonts (that I've forgot to mention) switching to code view crashed Dreamweaver. So, the solution is:
    1) Power up Dreamweaver and before opening any file/s go to Edit -> Preferences (or CTRL+U),
    2) Go to "Fonts",
    3) Change font that's in "Code view" to "Courier new".
    4) That is it!
    ** You can also (and it is advisable) to change "Fixed font" also to "Courier new"!
    5) Restart Dreamweaver (not necesary) and you should be able to switch from Design view to Code view without any problems!
    Sincerely,
    H.

  • DreamWeaver CS5 Crashes In Code View

    So, I've upgraded from CS4 to CS5, and everything was working fine for a month, but yesterday DW5 seems to be crashing evertime I click on a specific ASP page, in code view, and more specifically in the vbscript section of that page. I can be anywhere else on that page, but if I click in or cursor into the vbscript section, instacrash.
    I can open other asp pages in the site, and some don't crash it, but this one particular page is a guaranteed full crash when I click anywhere in the vbscript section of the page.
    Config is DW CS5, WIn 7 x64, 6GB RAM, everything fully patched and updated, both OS and CS5 apps.
    I have four minidumps already from today. Productive work is impossible. Any solutions?

    Did you ever figure out the answer to this problem? I'm having a similar problem where if I try to edit ANY code in dreamweaver, it crashes.
    Example of code
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>Untitled Document</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
    See what I mean by any code? Even a fresh bare bones HTML doc crashes when trying to edit in any way, letter, space, del, backspace, etc.

  • CS5: Pasting smart quotes into code view problem

    Hi all,
    In my blogging workflow, I copy the blog text from from MacJournal into the code view in Dreamweaver CS5.  In CS3, it seems that DW allowed the left & right smart and unicode quotes to be pasted in untouched.  However, DW CS5 seems to be converting all single ‘ & ’ to the ASCII ' and all “ & ” to ASCII ".  Is there a way to turn this off?
    I don't want to paste the text into the design view because I don't want DW to auto format the text.  I got some specific formatting that I like to do.
    Thanks!
    Steven

    Yes, the appropriate meta tag is in place.  In Preferences, UTF-8 is selected under Fonts.  Try pasting:
    “Test”
    into the code view and see what happens.  Hmm, Just tried pasting the above into the Design View and the same thing happened.  The curly quotes where changed into straight quotes.  BTW, I'm runn ing DW under Mac OS X Lion.
    I pasted the same text in another app, TextEdit, and the curly quotes pasted just fine.
    I need the curly quotes because I change them into &#8216;, &#8217;, &#8220;, and &#8221; (‘ ’ “ ”) for compatibility with older browsers (pre-IE6).  Yes, my site has been visited by such older browsers.
    Thanks!

  • Does CS5 enable the history panel in code view?

    I saw an old thread from last year (http://forums.adobe.com/message/1038491#1038491) where people confirmed that the history panel is only enabled in "design view", and is disabled in "code view". I'm wondering whether that feature has been changed in CS5. Does anybody know?
    The reason I'm wondering is I'm trying to create keyboard shortcuts to quickly comment code (either /* */, or //) and remove comments. I know there's a button available on the toolbar that will add a /* */ comment, so getting a keyboard shortcut for that isn't such a big deal, but I'd really like a way to remove comments that's faster than right-clicking on a text selection to bring up the context menu, go down to "Selection >", and click on "Remove Comment". From what I've read, it seems like the best way to make a keyboard shortcut for that would be to select some text and do "Remove Comment" through the context menu, then create a macro/command using the history panel, and finally assign a keyboard shortcut to that command. However, this doesn't seem possible since for me the history panel is disabled when I'm in code view (in Dreamweaver 8).
    If anyone has a better solution to my real question, of how to create a keyboard shortcut to remove comments from code, I'd be very grateful to hear it!

    Wow, I didn't even realize that button to remove coding was there. I was looking at the /* */ button on the PHP tab of the Insert toolbar, and trying to find another button there that would remove comments, and didn't realize there already was one on the coding toolbar. That's perfect, thanks a lot! And thank you also for the info on the CS5 history panel.

  • Working in code view selects whole blocks of text when a page is opened for the first time

    This is really annoying feature of dreamweaver, I assume it serves a purpose but I do not know what it is. If I open a document (I generally always work in code view) then select the area I wish to, say, copy and then press control and c, the whole block of code becomes selected (so my selection expands). That isn't what I selected so why does it do this? If I click outside the code view - on to css styles for example - then I can now select the lines of code I want and can work with the code as intended. If I save the document, tab to another document in dreamweaver and tab back again, the same happens. So, everytime I open a document I have to click CSS styles before I can work with the document as intended. I've been working with this for a while and it's go to the point where it makes me cry. It's not quite as annoying as working with the old ftp service but it's not far off.
    Help.

    I think you're describing this well known bug

  • Slow to open files or switch tabs in code view

    Dreamweaver 13.2 on Windows machines and a Mac.
    Opening locally stored html files take 3 to 10 seconds to open. After they are open, they will occasionally slow down for a second or two before becoming responsive again. This is in code view. If I disconnect the network cable and open dreamweaver, it will run fast until you restart the program again with the network cable plugged in. You can plug in the network cable anytime after Dreamweaver loads and it will remain fast.
    This has been going on for a couple of months now and it happens to multiple machines running Windows OR Mac and regardless of the network I'm on, lan or wireless. Task manager doesn't show a spike in network activity at the time, so I'm not sure what Dreamweaver is trying to do.
    Is there something I can test/turn off/disable/update to troubleshoot this? I've disabled the settings sync for Creative Cloud but still has no effect.

    Do your files contain many links to external servers such as Google Ads, Facebook badges, scripts or web fonts hosted on CDNs?    You might try commenting these out in your code to see if that improves performance.

  • PNG Semi-Transparent background shows up with visual errors in code view in Dreamweaver CS5

    Hi,
    I am using an image as a visual divider between blocks of content for a template that I am making. The background is a PNG image with varying amounts of transparency. This background is set to be at the bottom of the div and creates a horizontal line. Everythign works out when the page is viewed in browser, and also in live-view inside dreamweaver. But once I view it in code view, the lines turn into jagged green distortions. I asked friends to run this in their dreamweaver and it is happening to them as well. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    I guess you're referring to 'Design View'.
    Design View is only more from a reference perspective - it doesn't render graphic elements the way it is supposed to, always.
    But, you did mention that it looks just fine in Live View, right?
    Btw, can you post the CSS rule you've applied to this DIV where you add the background image for the separator line?

  • Viewing open source code

    I would like to know a website or book that I can actually see the source code that has been developed for the Java open source code. This would help me tremendously in understanding how everything is put together. Does anyone know of this source?

    That would vary from application to application. You talk as if there is one "Java Open Source" application out there that we could point you to the source of. Of course there are many many many different applications out there, and there isn't one answer for you.
