Opening .indd files in CS5 that were created in a newer version

I need to open .indd files in InDesign CS5.  Apparently those files were created in a newer version of InDesign, to which I do NOT have access in order to create legacy (IDML) versions of those files.  What is the "fix" for this issue?

I'm trying to create my organization's newsletter from .indd files that the previous editor created in a "free trial version" without also saving them as .idml files.  Now that version is expired and I'm not even sure what version it was, though I suspect it may have been CS6.  I was able to open an .idml file from another author that had been created in CS5.5 as I had access to all the links and fonts in the zipped folder.
So what you are telling me is that these files are useless to me unless I upgrade my InDesign version?  I don't have that kind of a "budget".

  • Opening INDD files in Windows7 that were created on a Mac

I'm not even really sure if this is a PC - Mac issue but here goes.....
I am having performance issues, particularly with type, switching between tools and updating links. All of these seemingly simple tasks are inordinately slow. The INDD CS6 docs were created on an iMac with an i7 processor and plenty of RAM (I know because I created the documnets). Now I am having to open these CS6 docs at another location using a Dell with an i7 quad core and 24 gigs of RAM running Windows7.  The issue seems to effect docs that are very graphic heavy. On the other hand other Mac generated docs open and run just fine on this Dell. Both the imac and the pc being used are heavily equipped and shouldn't have any problems.
One note: all the files in question were sent via a browser based FTP connection.
Can anyone help or am I doomed to watching the little blue ring in windows7 spin forever?

Thanks. I knew about the missing font issue. Once those were loaded or replaced performance got a little better. However, I didn't know about the color profile issue. I switched the application to use the working profile rather than the document profile and that seemed to help. These files in particular that I'm having issues with were also transferred via ftp and during the time frame they were transferred there were some strange anomalies when downloading or uploading to the ftp. The files could be slightly damaged but not enough to destroy the file completely.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can't open .inx files in CS3 that were created in CS2

I am presented with a message..
'Indesign.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
This happens when I open a .inx file from it's location by double clicking on it and also if I open CS2 and use the file>open route...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Bear in mind that when you open a CS2 .inx with CS3 (assuming that it works), there is no information about the CS2 composition in the file, so CS3 composes everything. Thus, you might well see reflow that you won't see if you just open a CS2 file with CS3.
On the other hand, if you do open a CS2 .indd with CS3 with the intention of doing further work on it, be prepared for that reflow to suddenly happen the moment you start trying to edit any text.
This is actually a good argument for going the .inx route in the first place -- all surprises of layout and composition hit you in the face immediately rather than happening hapharzardly as you work with the document.
You could use the Document Reflow command (Ctrl + Alt + /) after opening the .indd to get the composition changes over with in one swell foop.

  • Can you open with Pages documents that were created in a 2004 version of Microsoft word for Mac?

Can you open in Pages documents that were created in a 2004 version of Microsoft Word for Mac?

Pages '09 will open .doc files from Word 2004. The Mac OS is not what is in question. Pages '09 opens Word 2004 documents and if the same version of Pages will run in Lion and in Mountain Lion ..... Thats all that matters.
I trust you were using MS Office 2004 and would now like to buy Pages?

  • Pages tells me I need to upgrade to 5.0 to open documents from iCloud.  When I go to the mac app store it says pages 5.0 is installed, but Pages says it's running 4.3.  I just want to open documents on my mac that were created on my iPad.

Pages tells me I need to upgrade to 5.0 to open documents from iCloud, but the mac app store says its already installed and won't let me upgrade.  when I check the version of pages I am running it says 4.3.  I just want to be able to open documents on my mac that were created on my iPad.  How can i get Pages 5.0?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got Pages 5.0, but you still have got Pages 4.3, so Pages 4.3 is being opened instead of the newest version, being this the reason why you get a message telling you to update Pages to the most recent version.
If you don't need the old version, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and delete the old Pages icon or move it to an external drive. I don't recommend you to do this, as users are complaining about the lack of features of the new version.
Instead, what you can do is to put the new Pages icon in the Dock by dragging it from the Finder window to the Dock, so you can open the new Pages version from the Dock and you can open all your documents with it after opening the application

  • Cannot open InDesign files on Mac that were saved on PC

I subscribe to Create Suite and have it installed on both my Mac and PC. So, they should both be the most current version, right? All updates are current.
A few (not all) InDesign files that were created/saved on a PC will not open up on my Mac. I get this message:
Cannot open [file name] because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.0).
You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in these version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML.
"Save As InDesign CS4" actually has IDML in parenthesis, so it's all one option. When I bring the file over to my mac, it doesn't open properly (for example all the images are gone).
Could it be possible that there is a newer version of InDesign only for my PC and my Mac can't open those files? Seems ridiculous.

You would have no problem opening a file in version 10.0 if it was saved in 10.1, just as you would have no problem opening any other version dot release file in ay dot release of that version.
The problem here is the PC was updated to CC2014 and the Mac was not.
The OP also mentioned missing pictures when using IDML. IDML removes the previews, but you would need the linked images in any case for output, regardless of whether  you use .indd or IDML to move the file.

  • Have itl and xml files on external hd am running home premium. can  no longer access files, am told this is because they were created with a newer version of itunes. also when i try to download 10.3 it wont, just says invalid drive j and for me to try aga

i am running vista home premium on desktop and vista basic on laptop. have placed my itunes music with .itl and .xml files onto external drive connected to another desktop running vista and can no longer access music on first two mentioned comps only on the one connected to external drive. always am told that the library cant be read because it was created using a newer version of itunes. have tried to download 10.3 but it always tells me that i have and invalid hard drive j and to try again. any ideas?

Older versions of iTunes cannot read libraries created with newer versions of iTunes. You need to have the same version of iTunes on all your PCs. Is that the case?
As far as the problem installing iTunes goes, see this article from b noir on dealing with the problem:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2450004
If you get to the point where you need the Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, you will need more help as it has been withdrawn by Microsoft. but I am hoping the virtual drive trick will work,

  • Can you open/edit indesign files on CS3 that were created using CS5?

I recently bought indesign CS5 and am using this for my internship; however, my boss is still using CS3 and said she could not open or edit the indesign file i sent her.  I looked under "export" to see if there was an option and did not find anything.  I am using a mac and I believe she is using a P.C., also, when I last sent her the file, I was still using my free trial - does any of this make a difference?  Please help!

This has been covered endless times but anyway, I'll do it again!
You have to export an idml file from CS5, then open that idml in CS4, export an inx file from there then open that in CS3 and save as an indd.  Sorry but there is no way round it, fullstop, end of story etc etc.  So if she is using CS3 and you're using CS5 there is no route between them unless you have CS4, and even then the route is littered with pitfalls!  Look here for a rather long discussion / sometimes rant on the subject.
Ultimately she'd have to upgrade, or you could see if you could buy a CS3 or 4 version but it is very hard to get a legitimate copy, the only way is buy it off someone you know and most people aren't selling because they're upgrading.
Best news last, there is a short term fix, go to this guys blog and you can download a trial version of CS4 which will last for a month.

  • Cannot open indd file in CS5.5? "Please upgrade your plugins to the latest version or upgrade..."

I refer to a similar forum post here - http://forums.adobe.com/message/4081971 - which outlines a similar problem with opening a file.
The difference is the file I can no longer open was created using Adobe indd CS5.5 and I am opening it with Adobe indd CS5.5. I have never had this issue previously. The only change is to a new OS on Mac - Version 10.8.2. Error message says "Cannot open "File name" please upgrade your plugins to the latest version or update to the latest version of Adobe" - I know there is CS6 but why should I now need to upgrade suddenly?
Can anyone help here? I can forward a link to the file in question if needs be.
    Cheers,
    Catie

@Catie – did you verify, if your InDesign file is saved in version CS5.5?
You could do so by using a ExtendScript (Adobe's version of JavaScript) written by Jongware.

If the problem is due to a corruption of plug-in version information, I fear you have no chance other than:
    1. Update CS5.5 to the latest bug-fix version => 7.5.3
    2. Download a trial version of InDesign CS6, open and export the file to IDML and re-open it in InDesign CS5.5 (though this might not work for a corrupted file)
    3. Try to open the file on a different machine
Are there 3rd party plug-ins involved? If so contact their makers…

  • Opening a file in CreativeCloud that was created in CreativeCloud still generates error

Hello everyone! I am a college instructor and my students are creating basic Flash files in CreativeCloud that when sent to me, and opened in CreativeCloud generates the following error:
"The document 'file/path' was created with Adobe Flash Professional CC and might contain new features not supported in this version of Flash Professional.
Please save this document using a different filename to avoid losing any data.
Why would it give me that error if it was both created and opened in Adobe Flash Professional CreativeCloud? This is an online class so I am unable to see how they created the document in the first place to see how it differs from another student whose project doesn't have problems.

assumming you're opening in flash pro cc, you may not be using the latest version of flash pro cc.
in any case, you can ignore the message because it's unlikely any of you are using advanced features.

  • Can't open projects with Imovie 5 that were created with earlier version

I can't open my Imovie projects that I created when using Mac OS 9.2 now that I'm using Tiger and Imovie 5.
I'm not sure what version of Imovie I created them with. Do I need to find an earlier version and open them in the classic environment, or is there some way of converting or importing them?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Theoretically iMovie 5 can convert old projects, but projects created in Mac OS 9.2 can be quite difficult, for OS 9 is very different than OS X. More about that here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1677339
Your best option is to use the version of iMovie that you used originally to edit the project. If the projects are really old, that may require starting up your Mac in Mac OS 9 (instead of running iMovie in the Classic environment, which is Mac OS 9 running inside Mac OS X.)
Your best solution may be to boot up in Mac OS 9 and use your old version of iMovie to export the project back to the camera, then boot into Mac OS X and import the tape into iMovie 5.
If you don't have a camera, export to a Full Quality DV movie, then import that movie into iMovie 5.
The camera will (probably) deliver the clips to iMovie 5 as clips, while the export to a Full Quality DV movie will not.
By the way, to see which version of iMovie last edited the project, drop the project file on the TextEdit icon in the Dock. The version is shown at the top of the file.
iMovie 2.1.2 was the first version to run in OS X, I believe. The last version to run in OS 9 had the same version number, unfortunately.
If your Mac doesn't let you start up in Mac OS 9, then say more about exactly what happens when you try to convert the project. Do you get error messages? What are they?

  • I cannot open Pages documents on my Intel 2.56 iMac (Tiger) that were created on a newer iMac.  It says "Document" couldn't be opened.

    "         "

    Hi Patti,
    "This is not possible....?"
No. True in many cases—older versions can't open the files of newer versions, usually because of new features or a change in file format (to accommodate new features).
But the iWork '09 applications (up to v n.0.x ) will run in Tiger. If iWork on the newer machine was installed from a disk, and the disk was purchased with a Family licence, you can install it on up to five computers owned by members of the same family, and living under the same roof. If it was a single user licence, or if it was purchased and installed via the Mac app store, you'll need a new retail box version.

    Barry

  • Opening photos on a PC that were created on a Mac

    Hello everyone:
I imagine there is a very basic solution to this problem, but I'm having difficulty finding an answer.
I use Macs. When I send photos or video clips (as email attachments) to people who have PCs, they can't open them. The photos are JPEG files, and the video clips are AVI files.
Sometimes they get the following dialogue box: "file does not have a program
associated with it for performing this action. Create an associated in folder
    option control panel."
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Templeton's right.Windows need the file extension to assign which application opens it. Additionally you can check the box that asks you to send "Windows friendly attachments", in the window pane through which you choose the file you wish to attach.
