Opening internal disk drive on emac with new (non apple) keyboard

OKAY, I had to get a new keyboard, I can't stand the little apple keyboards!!! they are so laborious for your fingers! i got a great logitech wireless keyboard and the only thing im missing is the disk drive open button on the apple keyboard. of course, you can open the drive through itunes, but is there not a way to open the drive up without opening itunes?? does anyone else feel the same way about apple keyboards?? THANKS!

Hilary, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your CD/DVD drive is called a disc drive. Your hard drive is called a disk drive.
You can open the disc drive on Restart/Startup while holding down the mouse button.
Another method.
Enabling an *Eject Menu* - you can enable another means of ejecting discs by opening the folder System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras and double-clicking the file "Eject.menu". An eject icon will appear in the menubar that can be used to close and open selected optical drives.

  • New Non-Apple keyboard doesn't have Eject key.

I wear out Mac keyboards fast, so I got a non-Apple Mac keyboard, but it lacks a drive-open/eject key. Is there any way to program an F-key or a combination to open the drive door?

    Hi-
Go to System/ Library /CoreServices /Menu Extras. Inside that folder, find and double-click on the file called Eject.menu.
Now, look in your Menu bar, and you should be the proud owner of an Eject icon, which, when clicked, ejects the optical drive (closes it too)!

  • Resetting the PMU with a non-Apple keyboard

Trying to help a buddy of mine do a PMU on his 20" G5 ALS, are their alternative IBM format keystrokes to the command-option-P-R sequence?
    Thanks.

What you are trying to do is reset the PRAM. Resetting the PMU doesn't need the keyboard at all: SMU.

  • PRAM reset with non-Apple keyboard??

    Hi,
I have a generic USB keyboard connected to my G4 Mac Mini, no windows key, no apple option key. I need to reset the PRAM - is there any way I can do this with a non-Apple keyboard?
    Thanks,

It is indeed strange that it doesn't work, unless...
Firmware password protection in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option boot will show a lock, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.

  • How do I repair the internal disk drive on an older iMac?

Running Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8 on an older iMac.  I ran Disk Utility and it found a problem requiring the internal disk to be repaired.   The instructions said to boot the system using an installation CD.  The only CD I have is for OSX 10.4.4 ( Tiger).  I don't have one for Snow Leopard. I can access this CD and instructions on the CD, "About Apple Hardware Test" say to hold down the D key to boot into the diagnostics, or the hold down the "C" key to boot to the OS on the CD.  Neither of these options work.  It keep booting into Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8) and I cannot repair the internal disk drive without running on an OS started form the CD.
I've spent a couple of hours trying to get it to boot to the Tiger installation CD.  Wish I had made an install CD for Snow Leopard.  Maybe that would work.  Is that what I need?  I really think it should boot to the Tiger CD.
I've spent lots of time in these user forums and don't see anything that helps.  Any suggestions??  Having trouble with doing automatic Time Machine backups to an external disk drive and maybe it is because of the corrupted hard drive.  Although the error looks quite minor from the description in Disk Utility.  The system runs fine and I don't see any other problems.  Just struggling with Time Machine.
This is an older iMac, 4,1 with a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GBytes of SDRAM.  20 inch screen.  I have a MBP sitting next to it and use them both, even though I can't update the iMac to Lion or above because of the Core Due processor.  It is still a good computer and very useful.
What do I have to do to get it to boot from a CD?
    Thanks for your help,
    veehb

That is well worth $20.  I'll pick one up tomorrow.  Is there an easy way to make an installatoin CD that will also be a backup for my installation?

  • Will a 3" disk (containing an antenna driver) work in a MacBook internal disk drive?

Will a 3" disk (containing an antenna driver) work in a MacBook internal disk drive?

Slot loading machines can only handle 4.72" (120mm) standard CD disks. Any other size will simply get stuck in the drive and be really hard to get out. Your best bet is to find someone with a tray loading CD drive and have them copy the driver over to a USB thumb drive or a standard size CD.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • How do I open my disk drive?   Help

How do I open my disk drive?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
         /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • HT1369 Ipod touch not being recognized by itunes (but is registering as an external drive by the computer itself) have updated and reinstalled itunes, stopped/started apple mobile device and removed and mobile programs associated with my non apple cellpho

Ipod touch not being recognized by itunes (but is registering as an external drive by the computer itself) have updated and reinstalled itunes, stopped/started apple mobile device and removed any mobile programs associated with my non apple cellphone. This seems to have started happening after the last Itunes update I did as I was able to put music on my ipod touch a month or so ago. Is there some way to go back to an older version of itunes? I really have no idea what else to do since I followed every step on the trouble shooting page for windows 8.

I had this problem too and my roommate solved it!
    Go to 'Settings'
    'Music'
Scroll to the bottom and enter your password to log onto your home sharing
Then connect to iTunes and sync!

  • Intel iMac with new usb aluminum keyboard will not recognize boot options

I have a first gen Intel iMac core duo 20". After I replaced the old usb keyboard with the new aluminum usb keyboard, I can no longer boot into single-user mode, select to boot from a different volume (including boot camp), boot from a CD, or boot into target mode. All of the boot key options no longer work. These options do work with an older Apple keyboard. I have all the latest updates including the latest firmware and keyboard drivers. Help Apple, I really need to boot into these different options and with the new keyboard, I can't. I have read several other accounts of this on other sites.

I have an early 2006 intel iMac and am having the same problem with the new keyboard. Called AppleCare, who sent me to the local Apple Store after trying several minutes in vain to cure the problem.
One of the Genius's at the Apple Store pulled up Article 306893, Apple Keyboard (2007): Cannot boot to Startup Manager. This is a document that's apparently not available to the public, as I have the printed copy, but have been unable to pull it up in my searches.
The issue is some intel-based iMacs and Mac mini computers shipped prior to 2007 may not boot to the Startup Manager when holding down the Option key on the aluminum keyboard (2007).
My iMac is listed among the products affected.
The solution they offer is to follow these steps:
    1. While starting the computer, point the Apple remote at the computer and hold down the Menu button. The computer should boot into the Startup manager.
    2. Use the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons to select the desired boot volume.
    3. Once the desired boot volume is selected, press the Play / Pause button to continue booting.
Hope this helps. It works for my system. Still doesn't solve the keyboard issue but offers an acceptable workaround.

  • New (wired) Apple Keyboard

I have a iMac G5 with system 10.4.10. I just bought the new (flat) Apple keyboard and installed the latest software for the keyboard, after having keyboard shortcut problems.
Now even after installing all the latest and greatest software, I can't use my left-side command key for the command-paste function in any application; even though I can command-paste with my right-side command key. I can do other command-key functions with the left command key though (such as command-C for copying).
Also, the desktop icons - that should only be the result of pressing the new keyboard's F3 key - randomly activate without my pressing the F3 key.
Any troubleshooting ideas? I really LOVE this keyboard and want to keep it...I just wish it would function as reliably as my (working) one that came with my computer.

There has been a lot of discussion about the function keys, this comes from MacFixIt:
+Apple Aluminum keyboards (#4): More on function keys not working, potential fix+
+We continue to report on an issue with Apple's new aluminum keyboards where the F3 and F4 keys, which should trigger Dashboard and Expose, do not normally trigger these functions unless the function (fn) key is held down while they are pressed. If you navigate to the keyboard pane of System Preferences and check the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys," the Dashboard and Expose functions are triggered by the F3 and F4 keys, but the rest of the special function keys no longer work (brightness toggling, etc.).+
+Some users are apparently being told by Apple that the function keys do not work on any machines other than the Mid-2007 iMacs, with which the keyboards ship (they are also available for separate purchase). One reader writes:+
+"I also encountered the new function keys not working. I contacted Apple support and I was informed that they only work with the new iMacs. "+
+Meanwhile, we have received word of a potential fix for the non-functioning keys that involves use of one of our favorite troubleshooting tools, Pacfisit.+
+MacFixIt reader Joe Mullins writes: "I fixed the dashboard and expose keys on my keyboard. The problem is apparently that Dock.app isn't getting updated properly. I fixed it using my original install disks, 10.4.10 combo updater, keyboard update and Pacifist."+
    +Joe's process is as follows:+
+1. Insert Install disk for 10.4.x and open /System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/ with pacifist.+
+2. Within Pacifist, navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click install. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace.+
+3. When that's finished, open the 10.4.10 combo update package with pacifist and navigate to the dock.app again. Click install, and this time when it asks, make sure to click update.. not replace.+
+4. When that's finished, open the keyboard software 1.1 mpackage, click the arrow to reveal the contents of AppleKeyboardSoftware_Cmn.pkg, navigate to dock.app one more time, click install and then update once again. Not replace.+
+5. Once this procedure is finished, you can force quit dock.app and the keys should work.+
You should probably reapply the update after doing the above.
    Please post back with results,
