I don't think you can get a prompt to ask you if you want iTunes to open when you plug in your iPod. You have to set it to open automatically or not.
However there is a keyboard shortcut to prevent autosync - see Help>>Keyboard shortcuts>>iPod
"Shift-Control as you connect the iPod to your computer (hold the keys down until the iPod appears in the iTunes window)"
I haven't tried using it when iTunes isn't open and you plug in an iPod - maybe you could experiment.

  • How to "Open iTunes automatically when iPod is connected"....

...without having them sync automatically?  I'm able to do this on my MBP just fine.  The solution on my MBP is to uncheck "prevent ipods, ipads, iphones from syncing automatically" under Devices Preferences.  Then I'm able to check "Open iTunes when Ipod is connected" under my iPod's Summary Options.  After that i can then go back a uncheck "prevents Ip.... from syncing automatically".
Unfortunately, this option doesn't seem to be available to Windows users.  or is it?
    Thanks,
    Mike

this will solve half of my issue while coincidentally causing the other half of it.
I want to be able to:
Open iTunes automatically when iPod is connected
    AND
Prevent my ipod from syncing automatically *(when this is enabled the prior feature becomes disabled)

  • Ipod touch doesn't open itunes automatically

My wife and I are both noticing that when we plug our iTouches into our Snow Leopard OS computers that iTunes does not automatically open up. This is something that has only happened during the past week after upgrading the iOS/iTunes softwares.
We now have to manually open iTunes to allow syncing with iTouch to procede.

First I assume you mean go to iTunes Preferences/Devices not iTunes Settings/Devices
The box for preventing syncing was not checked. I left it unchecked.
Next I assume you mean go to the summary pane when the iPod is connected to the Mac and, yes, the check box for open iTunes when iPod is connected has already been selected. I left it checked.
Then you say go back to Settings (Preferences?) and activate the option NOT to sync automatically. I did this but I have to ask why - it seems counter intuitive. Furthermore, the option for autostart is not greyed out on my computer.
None of this has restored my ability to automatically open iTunes on connecting my IPod to the Mac. I still think it was a problem with the recent iOS/ITunes upgrades.

  • Ipad does not open iTunes automatically

I have a new iPad 3. Connecting to MBP running Lion. All latest software.
On connecting the iPad it would open iPhoto automatically rather than iTunes. I sorted that out following advice on changing preferences (in iTunes & Iphoto) found here & now it does not open iPhoto automatically. However despite having 'Open iTunes when this iPad is connected' checked in Itunes/devices/preferences iTunes still doesn't open automatically when I connect the iPad to the laptop with a cable.
If I then manually open iTunes, the iPad is recognised & syching begins automatically.
How do I get iTunes to open automatically when I connect my iPad?
    Thanks
    Ian

This is a common problem. Using a different USB port may resolve the issue.

  • Mac doesn't show Ipod icon and doesn't open ITunes automatically

I really look for a good advice to solve this problem, the 2 Gb device is property of my 11 y.o. daughter.
The IPod Nano is two months old (Christmas), set up and installation went ok at the time. It works properly. Tonight I connected it to one of the Usb ports of my Mac Mini dual core but nothing happened. No icon, no ITunes opening.
    ITunes is version 7.02 .
    Thanks for help,

  • Ipod Connect No Longer Opens Itunes

For some reason, and this just started happening recently, when I connect my Ipod, it opens up the folders of the Ipod as if it were a Hard Drive and does not open Itunes automatically. I have it selected in Itunes settings to Automatically open Itunes when Ipod is connected. I did a registry hack for my Zune, so it could be seen as a Hard Drive, but that was for the Zune. I've since uninstalled all my Zune software. So I don't think the Zune is related but, does anyone know why ? Oh yea I'm using 2 Ipods, one is set to Automatically Update to Itunes, the other is set to Manually Manage Music. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I figured it out myself. I recently did a msconfig in startup and disabled "Itunes Helper" in the list and then enabled it again (adding the check mark) and that did the trick.

  • Ipod Classic 120 opens iTunes, is in My Computer, but NOT in iTunes

When I plug my iPod Classic 120 into the PC it opens iTunes automatically. It shows as an iPod in My Computer, BUT doesn't show in iTunes.
It doesn't show the Syncing Circle when I plug it in.
The screen just changes to 'Connected'
I also get a Caution bubble in the taskbar
    Here is the other photo
I followed all the recommended options I saw posted including uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.
It also locks up when I eject, and freezes up the PC as well.Stays on 'OK to Disconnect' for a while, not the way it always was.
Its getting to be a real pain!
    Any help??
    Please email me [email protected]
    Thx

Did you put it on your ipod?

  • Connecting iphone doesn't open itunes

The computer has no problem recognizing the iphone (automatically opens iphoto), just doesn't open itunes automatically. If I open itunes manually, the sync starts automatically and works normally. The box "open iTunes when this phone is connected" is checked. Anyone any other suggestions?

I have this same problem. It used to work -- I'd connect the phone, and iTunes would open and sync. Now, only iPhoto opens, not iTunes. I also have the "Open iTunes" box checked, and the iTunes Helper is in my startup items. I can't figure out why it was working for 4 years, then stopped all of a sudden.

  • Can I recharge my shuffle without opening iTunes?

My iTunes music files are all on an external hard drive, which is being repaired. If I plug in my shuffle in, to be charged it opens iTunes automatically and when the song files on the shuffle are not found(due to being on my external hard drive) they will erase from the ipod.
Is there a way to recharge without opening iTunes.

Yes... you can buy an Apple iPod USB Power Adapter which plugs into the wall.
The easiest way would have been to tell iTunes to NOT "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached" in Settings...but now it's too late.
Out of curiosity, WHAT does "being repaired" mean with respect to your external drive? Hopefully the process won't destroy your music files.

  • When I open iTunes it will automatically go to full screen mode. I can't work out how to turn this off. Only iTunes opens to full screen mode.

When I open iTunes it will automatically go to full screen mode. I can't work out how to turn this off. Only iTunes opens to full screen mode.

Go to System Preferences (under the Apple logo in the menu bar).  Choose "General".  Click "Always close windows when quitting an application".
    That should fix it.

  • Hi I do not want iTunes to open up automatically when I turn on my macbook pro.  I tried going to System Preferences Users and Groups Login Items and then I took iTunes off the list but it still opens up automatically when I turn on my laptop.

Hi I do not want iTunes to open up automatically when I turn on my macbook pro.  I tried going to System Preferences>Users and Groups>Login Items and then I took iTunes off the list but it still opens up automatically when I turn on my laptop. What should I do?

    Hi r,
Make sure you close iTunes before shutdown.  And you're quite welcome.

  • When connected via USB, my Ipod Classic 160GB mounts as a disc drive, then changes to a white drive.  When iTunes automatically opens, it crashes trying to mount and/ or sync.  When it times out, my only choice is to restore, but that doesn't fix problem.

I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 3.06 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.   I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5.2.  I'm not sure when the trouble started but I attempted a restore when the iPod would not play correctly.  It would start to play a file and get stuck on 0 seconds.  If I put the iPod on shufle, it will stall on 0 seconds for 15 seconds or so and then move on to the next track and stall again and so on.   Seemingly randomly, it will play a few tracks but eventually start skipping again.  This will continue until the battery is depleted which is fairly quick since the drive is constantly spinning.
My 160GB iPod Classic after restore attempts now is up to date with 2.0.4. and of course, nothing works as it should and I would say the skipping issue is worse than ever.
When I connect with any of three USB connectors, the iPod mounts to the desktop as a grey/silver disk drive picon exactly like the Macintosh HD picon.   Then Finder will stall for a few minutes- spinning pinwheel.  Somehow, the dock is never affected and I am able to open other applications like Safari or tab through open windows- just no action on the desktop.  Eventually, iTunes automatically opens and Finder becomes responsive again.  At this point the grey drive picon on the desktop becomes a white drive mount picon, but the iPod does not mount in iTunes, yet.  At some point, the iPod attempts to sync, iTunes crashes with the spinning pinwheel and eventually times out and I am prompted to restore the iPod again.  Once restored,  the iPod properly mounts under devices in iTunes and, as I have done this several times, even occasionally changes to the regular iPod picon on the desktop.
I have restored several times going as far a completely deleting iTunes from my iMac, downloading the latest directly from Apple.com, and attempting to restore again, but to no avail.
I have even used the disk utility to verify and/or repair my Macintosh HD and iPod.
It seems lots of folks are going through this ordeal.  Has anyone had any success in fixing the issue, even if only temporarily?

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Apple:  Give me a way to stop TV downloads on iTunes, or I stop buying shows on my AppleTV.  That simple.   I'm tired of automatic downloads filling my hard drive every time I open iTunes on my laptop.

I'm tired of automatic downloads filling my hard drive every time I open iTunes on my laptop.  Tonight I had to go to iTunes to verify my payment info - even though I'd already done that two days ago - and before I can even access the iTunes Store, iTunes starts downloading 44 TV shows that I've purchased over the last few months on my AppleTV; before I could completely stop it, it had entirely filled up my hard drive - 180 GB.  There's NO reason there isn't a way to stop auto-downloads of TV shows - every other type of media has the ability to stop auto-downloads, and given that I have an AppleTV (for now!), why in pasta's name would I want to load them onto my laptop?!

  • ITunes automatically opens to a list of my purchases.

Even though I am not signed in to iTunes, I can access my purchases lists from any computer.  For instance, although I only download my music to my home computer, iPad 2, or iPod Touch, sometimes I make the actual purchases here on my work computer.  However, if I open iTunes here, the list of songs I purchased - online here or at home - all of them - opens up.  If I go to the iTunes store, I have to sign in, but I did not sign in when I opened iTunes to see all my purchased songs. I should not be able to see this before I sign in.  Also, I cannot find a way to sign out, even though I am asked to sign in at the store.  What is happening, and what should I do to correct this?  Thank you.

    Hi Judy23454,
You may have a feature called Automatic Downloads enabled. More information about this feature can be found here:
