Opening JPG in Lightroom

OK, I shot in RAW+JPEG and when I imported to LR it shows both files but how do I open the JPEG's?
This started as a requirement to shoot B&W in camera for a photowalk group but I also wanted the Raw Images for other use, now when I open the files in LR all I can seem to open are the Raw files. In the file description it does show that both were imported.

If you check "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" in Preferences (General Tab), LR will import both Raw and JPEG and make them available to you as separate, unrelated photos.

How to open JPG, TIFF files in camera raw from Elements 10 organizer.

Thanks for that Damead, I agree with you that Organiser is real pain (there is a total lack of intuitiveness if that is  the correct word).
For my own work I use 'Lightroom' for around 90% of the time, only going into PSE10 for the 10% difficult bits the Lightroom can't handle.
I only needed to sort out the JPEG file opening method within PSE10 for some freinds in a small Photo Group that I run in Woodhall Spa, UK. 50% of the 12 members are beginners & a number of them do not have Raw capability on their Camera's, but now they can get their JPEG's into Camera Raw within PSE10 they have the same simple tabular form of adjustment sliders (not as many as in Lightroom of cause) but it gets over the labourious problem of going thru the PSE10's individual tool selection process each and every time since we are trying to get everyone in the Group working with individual Tools rather than the 'Auto' functions. We do this so that they learn what they are doing rather than staying 'dumb&happy' within Auto all the time & they also learn how to get more detailed control for each photo.
Ref. your comments on file handling/usage, I agree with your comments. Its far and away much more preferable to set up a file structure in 'Finder" (or in 'Explorer' if still using Windows) that you understand so you always know how to find the files. Also, I also never ever use the Camera Auto Load programme but physically 'drag & drop' photo files direct from the 'card' into the file system so I always know thier place (ie: they go into the location I want, not that which the Auto Loader wants).
As regards your comment about 'Lightroom', I don't have any problems at all since I just imported the whole of my photo file structure into the Lightroom Library Catalouge and then it automatically shows up on the LHS of the screen, still in that format, so you can search it direct within Lightroom and display all of the photo's in variuos arrangements and sizes; everything is as easy to find as it is in 'Finder' plus of cause you have all the 'Tagging' possibilities to use as well. As you add more new files into the 'Finder' structure, all you need to do in Lightroom is reimport, starting 1 level up from the new files and Lightroom will find the new files that need loading (ignoring the older ones already in the Library at that or lower levels) then 1 click and its done.
Your comments about getting others to follow a set file structure is very pertinant and also applies to evrything else that one ever does apart from just photo work; the times I have had to help others find info/files etc on their PC's because they don' know the location of anything is too many to contemplate.

  • Removing "+JPG" from Lightroom Thumbnails

    Hello,
I've been shooting RAW+JPG on my 30D and importing them both into Lightroom. There seems no point in using JPG with Lightroom, so to save space I now want to shoot in just RAW.
To save even more space, I want to remove/delete the JPG's that I shot alongside my RAW pictures which are now stored on my hard drive. The problem is that if I delete the JPG, the RAW thumbnail still has "+JPG" in the extension. (Example: 20071113_001.CR2+JPG)
What do I need to do to update the filename in the extension so it doesnt show the associated "+JPG" which does not exist anymore?
I've searched several online forums but can't seem to find the answer to this problem.
    Thanks!

    Hi Dom,
You could do it using the save metadata approach or the SQL approach (might be a bit quicker).
    SQL method
Download SQLite Administrator (free) from http://sqliteadmin.orbmu2k.de/ and unzip it to a folder on your hard drive.
Make sure LR is closed and make a copy of your catalogue before you start.
Start SQLiteAdmin, then from the menu select Database>Open. In the Open Database dialog box change the Files of type to Any File, then locate and open your LR catalogue. Ignore the left panel, which lists all the tables and indexes in the database, you will be working in the right panels - SQL Query and Result tabs.
To begin with, copy and paste the following query into the SQL Query tab:
select count(image) as jpegSidecars from Adobe_imageFiles
    where lc_idx_filenameExtension='jpg'
    and importHash is null;
Then press F9 to Execute with Result. This will give you a count under the heading jpegSidecars in the Results tab. It is a count of the number of jpegs in the catalogue that have been imported along with raw images.
If you want to see the records, you can copy, paste and execute the similar query:
    select * from Adobe_imageFiles
    where lc_idx_filenameExtension='jpg'
    and importHash is null;
Instead of counting the database records, this will list them in the Results tab.
So far, this is just information and has not altered the catalogue. The next SQL query removes these records from the catalogue - there is no going back after this (except with your backup). Copy, paste and Execute without Result (press F8) this query:
    delete from Adobe_imageFiles
    where lc_idx_filenameExtension='jpg'
    and importHash is null;
This will only delete the sidecar jpegs, not jpegs that have been imported on their own.
Once this has executed, close SQLiteAdmin and open LR to check your catalogue.
You should see your raw files without the +jpeg sidecars. You can also now import your jpegs as separate files if you wanted to.
As far as I can tell, this is all that is needed.
    Good luck
    Tony

  • Easy way to open JPGs in Camera Raw Module?

I am aware of the way to open JPGs in the ACR module by being in the Editor, and going to File>Open and changing the file type to RAW. I find this to be terribly inconvenient, however.
Is there any way to open a JPG in RAW from the Organizer where I can actually see the files? With regular Photoshop/Bridge I can just right click in Bridge and open in RAW easily. But I can't seem to find a way to do something similar in PSE11? There has to be an easier way because going to File>Open and trying to figure out what file I need from a huge pile of files is not a very good workflow.
    Thanks.

If you want to edit multiple JPGs in a raw editor interface, then you might consider using Lightroom, which is a bit cheaper than Photoshop.

  • Error message: "Dreamweaver can't open .jpg files"

    I'm using DW 8, and I have installed the 8.0.2 update. I'm
having trouble inserting certain JPG images into a site. I get an
error message pop-up that states "Dreamweaver can't open .jpg
files". It will allow me to insert some jpg files, but not all of
them. I've tried drag & drop and going through the Insert menu.
The files are not large at all. Doesn't appear to be any problem
with png's or gif's. It's incredibly frustrating. Anyone have any
    suggestions? TIA.

    > why was i taught that all my web images need
    > to be in 72dpi if it doesn't really matter?
most people suggest 72 because it was an old standard with
    the early
macintosh DTP programs. For web use it's easier to
    standardize on it because
when you make an image, you have to put ~some~ number in the
    resolution box
and it might as well be 72 as any other number. It simplifies
    moving image
files around in different applications if they are all the
    same resolution.
For display in a browser, these will all have the same file
    size and display
    size in a web page:
    600x600 pixels at 1dpi
    600x600 pixels at 72dpi
    600x600 pixels at 6000dpi
It's when they are used in other applications or when a
    direct url like
/photos/1.jpg is printed out that they may display in the
    resolution, not
    the pixel dimension.
I came across a page once where the designer always saved his
    images with a
resolution of 6000 dpi or some other odd number because he
    thought that if
people dragged the image off the page to save it- most of
    them wouldn't be
able to resize it. or some other idiot reason maybe.

  • Application crashes when trying to open jpg with Desktop API

Hi, i would like to open jpg, or gif files using Desktop API, and the application crashes. The Desktop API is supported by my OS, because txt files, or file directories can be opened, mails can be sent, browsing is also supported.
Only jpg and gif, and i think other picture formats cannot be opened.
Obviously ACDSee and other picture viewing programs are installed in my computer.
The corresponding application code can be found at the bottom of the page of http://www.awprofessional.com/articles/article.asp?p=661371&seqNum=2&rl=1
    my code:
    if(Desktop.isDesktopSupported()){
    Desktop desktop=Desktop.getDesktop();
    try
    desktop.open (fileToOpen);
    catch (IOException ioe)
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog (frame,
    "I/O problem");
    catch (IllegalArgumentException iae)
    JOptionPane.showMessageDialog (frame,
    "File doesnt exist");
    fileToOpen is obviously a File.
Thx for the help in advance.

  • IMac can no longer open .jpg .jpeg & other media files sent from PC?

I can no longer open .jpg photos & media files sent to my iMac from my wife's PC through Outlook email. I get an error message saying the item cannot be opened. All other recipients have no trouble opening these attachments. We have tried numerous fixes suggested by Apple chat sites but to no avail. I suspect an OS update around December 2010 has caused this problem on not just our machine but thousands of other iMac users & Apple is ignoring it. Why isn't Apple addressing this huge issue?

Likely, because there are millions of Mac users, and not everyone is experiencing this issue.   Until it happens to all Mac users with a specific system, it will be very difficult to isolate the cause.
You can sign up for a free online developer account:

  • Problem w/12.0.3 installation/ problem opening jpg from bridge

    Hi,
I used the update button to update Cs5 to version 12.03
After updating I got a message "update complete but with errors"...
I can't seem to "re" update my software.  I tried manually installing the updater and got this
The version number PS shows as running is 12.0.3
Also, since trying to do the update, I have a bug...   Everytime I try to open a jpg by clicking on the thumbnail in Bridge I get "Adobe CS5 has stopped working" message  The only way I can open a jpg is to open with ACR....
If I click a jpg from Windows Explorer, it will open in PS. just not from Bridge. I do have the correct setting in preferences to use PS to open jpg files
    Thanksfor your help.

The most common reason for patch to fail is the absence of folder "AdobePatchFiles" folder or it's content from location "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe\AdobePatchFiles" and it's counterpart location in Mac.
If this folder or its contents are missing then the patch cannot be applied , the only way to resolve this is to Reinstall the product and then apply patch again.
Now there can be two cases :
    1) Was this folder removed manually or some other action caused this removal of folder( May be some script or Defragmentation or anything). In this case please reinstall product and apply patch again.
    2) If the folder and its contents are intact but still patcher failed, then please follow the following steps:
         a) Create ribs3debug file without any extension inside %temp% directory of your system
         b) Run Patcher again
         c) If it fails , send the log files that are generated inside C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Installers
Hope it clears some of the facts around failure. If there are any underlying issues then we all hope to resolve them as soon as we have more information.

  • Error Opening JPG files in CS 5.1

As the title explains.  Can't open jpg files in CS 5.1  I have about 100 of these files that I access for a part time gig that are stored in the cloud.  Whenever I attempt to open these files I get the following error message which is attached.
Thanks and I hope I get some assistance.

That's not really an option seeing as though there are hundreds of files that I access on a daily basis.  Could it be possible that that something is wrong with my settings?  Other people can open them in my company

    Hi
I actually dont think its Lion (sorry i put that as couldn't remember) as not on that computer at the moment, its at home, I am at work. I know CS2 is compatable with whatever OS I am using because I can using CS2 indesign etc and I was able to use CS2 photoshop until I updated the Camino browser (I believe this is when it stopped working). I have CS5 but it wont work at all on my Powerbook G4.
I can send a message later with the OS I am using and maybe you can suggest other help? They told me in the MAC shop to try and get the installation discs. They also said I would be able to get these via Apple's 'media replacement programme' which I cannot find anyway! To be honest, I am not even sure getting the install discs will work but I'll try whatever I need to try and get Photoshop working on it again!
    Thanks

  • Opening JPG directly in Photoshop, passing Camera Raw

Hi! I would like to open JPGs that were edited in Camera Raw directly in Photoshop and I saw in this video from Russel Brown how I could do this. Only, he is using Bridge CS3 in the video and I am using CS4. The thing is that I don't have "Always open JPEG files with setting using Camera Raw", instead I have a dropdown with: "Disable JPEG support", "Automatically open JPEG with settings" and "Automatically open all supported JPEG". I tried these options but they don't help.
    Menu options in the video
The menu options that are available to me
    Do you have any solutions?
    Thank you,
    Victor

I just realised that setting to "Disable JPEG support" bypasses Camera Raw, but it has to be done to every file individually, and in that video from Russel Brown he just set an option and every JPEG opened in Photoshop bypassed Camera Raw. Do you know if this feature can be set in CS4 too?
    Thank you,
    Victor

  • I can't open attachments on my iPad 2.  I have downloaded the 8.0.2 software update.  I can't open jpgs, PDFs, docs. or movie files now.

I can't open attachments on my iPad 2t and I can't open jpgs, PDFs, docs. or movie files now.

Obviously, you are talking about the mail app, so force close the mail app and reset your iPad. If that fails, reset all settings.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
When you reset all settings, you will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.

  • Can't open jpg, preview.app does nothing

    Hi,
I am attempting to troubleshoot a minimac 10.4.10
I cannot open .jpg with preview.app (or tiff/gif ect.), which i assume is the default pic viewer.
when d-clicking on a jpg (whether downloaded or uploaded from a camera) the picture will not open.
the only thing it does is the very brief animation quick flash from icon to full screen like it will open except it doesn't.
i opened the task manager (or whatever its called in apple) and preview.app is not running.
it is only possible to view a pic with firefox, quicktime, or safari.
HELP! i have basic to moderate user knowledge of mac

    thanks for the responses!
i did a 'get info' on a pic and it does show the preview correctly (no thumnails anywhere is another problems as well)
it already has preview.app listed as the default app. i selected a different program and did a open with, and then switched the default back to preview.app and same problem.
*preview.app will not open period*. launching it by itself does nothing. i went to the applications folder and tried launching it from there and nothing. *It is still installed*. I did a 'get info' on it and it shows March 07 as the last time its been launched (approximate time of update to 10.4.10)
so i'm confident the problem is from the app not from the jpg files. It just won't launch.
is there anyway to reinstall it or something? uninstall/reinstall? dunno how to do this...

  • Opening jpgs as raw... image size

My office color corrects thousands of images per day for newsprint. These come in mostly as jpgs and some tifs and eps files. Most of these need a lot of color correction work, and I've found that opening jpgs with the RAW dialogue box and tweaking them there can be a huge time-saver (one menu with a bunch of sliders, versus opening curves, shadow highlight, hue/sat, color balance, etc.)
However! There are two things preventing us from utilizing the ability to open jpgs and using the raw dialogue box:
    1. Image size. We are dealing with images from several customers who need us to maintain their original image size and dpi, whatever that may be. Other customers want us to maintain the width/height and rasample the image down to 200dpi. (example: take this 3x5" @ 956dpi and make it 3x5" @ 200dpi) If I open one of their images in raw, I don't know what the original width/height were because the file has been resized to whatever I used on the last image. I've noticed it defaults to 240. The original jpg dpi changes with each image we get. Is there any way to make the raw dialogue box not change the image size? Which leads me to...
    2. Once I've opened a jpg using the raw dialogue box it will always open up again in raw (always changing the image size.) If I want to just open my jpg as a regular image in photoshop, I have to go to camera raw preferences and disable the ability to use raw on jpgs. Is there a faster way to ignore the raw settings on a jpg once it has been altered as raw?
So this is why we don't use raw, even though it'd be a huge advantage for us to be able to make these color corrections. If anyone has any ideas how to get around these, or even an easier workflow, I'd appreciate it!

For #1, if you look at the image in Bridge you can note the dimensions and resolution...you would then need to put that same resolution in the ACR resolution field.
For #2, no...as you note the ACR Preference controls whether or not Camera Raw will be used to open the image. You can use the Shift key when double clicking in Bridge to open the image directly into Photoshop and bypass the ACR dlog, but Camera Raw will still be used if it's set to be used in the Preferences...
You'll need to keep your image resizing just in Photoshop because Camera Raw is not designed to do that sort of resize/resampling...it's designed first and foremost as a raw processor and later added the ability to open and process camera JPEGs and TIFFs. Putting those kind of controls into Camera Raw wouldn't make sense since the end result of an image opened into Camera Raw is supposed to be an image processed and opened into Photoshop. So, what you are wishing for is really outside of the scope of the development design...sorry.
