Opening Links in Mail, Which Safari Window is Used?

It appears that whenever I click on a link in a Mail message, it always seems to open up in a new tab on the same window. Regardless of how many windows I have open in Safari, it's always the same one.
Is there a way to configure this?
I'd prefer that Mail links open in a new Safari window, or have them open in the last active Safari window.
Thanks.
OS X 10.8.5
Safari 6.1
Mail 6.6

Linc,
Sorry, I think I should have been more specific.
I have it set to Automatically. When I click on a link in Mail, the link opens up in a specific Safari window, the same one, for each and every link in Mail I click on. Each link adds a new tab to this specific window. Regardless of how many windows are open in Safari and regardless of which Safari window was last active, the Mail links always open in the same Safari window. Each link opens in a new tab in this specific Safari window. Even when I quite Safari (leaving this specific window open), Mail links keep using this window.
I don't want Mail (or links from other apps, like RSS readers) to open in new windows. Then I wind up with lots of windows, one for each new link. This is what I seem to get if I choose Never.
I'd prefer it if Safari would open the mail links in the last active Safari window. This doesn't seem to be an option in the Safari preferences. I was wondering if there was some other way to achieve this. Perhaps via Terminal, editing some preferences file?
I'm not even sure what logic Safari is using to pick the window. It's not last active. Is it first window opened? I suppose I should try that out.
Either way, if you have any other suggestions, that'd be great. Otherwise, thanks for you help.

  • When I try to open my Yahoo mail in safari, I get a message which states:" In order to use Yahoo mail, please turn Private Browsing off. Please go to Settings Safari Private Browsing, and turn off" The problem is my ipad does not a Private Browsing switch

When I try to open my Yahoo mail in safari, I get a message which states:" In order to use Yahoo mail, please turn Private Browsing off. Please go to Settings>Safari>Private Browsing, and turn off" The problem is, my ipad does not a Private Browsing switchat this location.

With iOS 7 on the iPad, you turn Private  Browsing on and off by tapping the URL field.  The screen that  opens up has your bookmarks on it.  In the bottom left corner is a hot button marked 'PRIVATE'.  Tap on the word 'PRIVATE' to turn private browsing on or off.  Yeah, there aren't any instructions anywhere that I can find to do this, and if you follow Yahoo's instructions, they don't work.  This doesn't happen with the previous Apple OS, and you can restore your iPad to the older OS.

  • Not opening links from mail - firefox turns grey at bottom

firefox usually opens links from "mail" in a new tab. Sometimes
firefox greys out and will not allow links to open. Clearing history
or restarting firefox solves the problem somettimes. Multiple restarts
    may be required.

I suggest you to file a bug report regarding this issue: https://bugreport.apple.com/
I can confirm that Safari has serious issues with opening links from other applications. For example Content Guide links in Quicktime Player opens empty windows.

  • Mavericks "open link behind mail" broken?

In Mail, "open link behind mail" <option/control-click> doesn't open a tab (or window) in Safari under Mavericks as it did in 10.8. Is there a workaround? Thanks!

For me after the recent Mail update, some (but not all) still don't work when right-clicked and either "Open Link" or "Open Link Behind Mail" are selected. My digest e-mails from Salon.com are especially bad. They will open in my browser when double-clicked, so the problem is just a minor glitch. The nuisance of doing that is the browser becomes the active app, and then I have to return to Mail to continue reading messages.

  • "open links behind mail" feature doesn't work

Since migrating to Yosemite, I can no longer  use "open links behind mail" feature.
The links do open directly to Safari or Chrome on top of mail.
But the "Open links behind mail" won't launch, regardless if the browser is open or not. I see it, it clicks, but nada... nothing ;-(
This feature always worked before migrating to Yosemite.
    Any suggestions?

  • Mail won't "open link behind mail" in Mavericks

Is anyone else having this problem?  I get weekly digests from a number of groups as well as google alerts.  My usual workflow is to read through the digest right-clicking on any links that I am interested in and selecting "open link behind mail".  When I do this in Mavericks... nothing happens!  Safari opens but it does not load the page.  so that means that now I am stuck swiping backwards and forwards between Safari and mail - opening a link, then back to mail to open the next one.

I have the same problem with mail that I receive from LinkedIn groups that I follow. I found that if you press and hold the Command and Option keys when you click a link it will open behind mail, in Safari.

  • Open links behind mail

Since migrating to Yosemite, I can no longer  use "open links behind mail" feature.  Apparently this is a bug and I see complaints about it going back to Oct 2013 at least.  Does anyone know if Apple EVER fixed this problem?

Bad syntax on my part. It's the right click Contextual menu. But I use it so much it's a shortcut for me, Sorry for the improper terminology.
No problem. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I thought that maybe the problem was a missing shortcut which I was unaware of. I have the contextual menu, and it works. If there was a shortcut, I didn't have it and thought that maybe that was what everybody is having a problem with.
Do you have the contextual menu item? Or does it just not work? I've seen some posts where the contextual menu is missing altogether.

  • I am unable to "open link behind mail" using Mac Mail now. It used to work fine, and just clicking works but not right clicking to open behind mail. Please help

This used to work on my Mac using Firefox and Mac Mail but now it doesn't. Opening regular links are unaffected. I can still click and open easily. This only happens when I try to use the feature, to open links behind mail. When I right click nothing happens. Nothing is opened.

    Hi GetPaulHoward,
Thank you for posting your question to the SUMO support forum, however I am not sure this pretains to Mozilla. There is a help forum you can contact at Apple.

  • Cannot open link in new tap or window after update to v.5

I'd updated to V.5 and then found that it cannot open link in new tab or window, from google page, after updating. I'd reinstalled 2 times but it still be the same problem. How should I do? Please suggest.
    Thanks.

This didn't fix the problem so I have decided to revert to the previous version: 24.6.0 esr. Maybe when version 31 or 32 come around I come back to the "latest" version?

  • Mail won't "open link behind mail" in Yosemite

I'm working on a MacBook Pro, late 2013, with a new upgrade of OS X 10.10 (Mail 8.0). I often have messages from lists that contain links (primarily reading curation or newsletters from NYT, the Guardian, NextDraft, etc) where it's most convenient for me to, with one hand, bring up the contextual menu and select "open link behind Mail". It worked inconsistently before and, now with the upgrade to Yosemite, does not work at all.
I know that Command-click (and, oddly, Shift-Command click, or Option-Command click) both do the same thing, but it takes two hands, and there is no feedback (arguably there is no feedback with the contextual menu, but the double-blink of the menu item when selected at least suggests action).
My recollection is that this worked inconsistently at least since Mountain Lion. I'm curious if others have the problem, and more curious about possible solutions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • TS3408 I can no longer receive or send e-mail on Safari, or search using Bing.  When URL's are typed in and entered, there is no response.

Safari is apparently frozen.  I can no longer receive or send e-mail on Safari, nor search using Bing.  When URL's are typed in and entered, there is no response.  Obviously, I can still use Firefox for these needs, but how do I get Safari back to work?

I have the same issue - it worked once, then the error pop-ups keep coming asking for the same darn password I gave it and saved 100 times before. Anyone else find a solution? I use my earthlink for outgoing and that works but would rather use godaddy since I pay for it.

  • Firefox 3.6.15 on OSX 10.6.6 no longer opens links from Mail; Safari and Chrome will

Sometime around version 3.6.12 firefox, when set as the default browser, won't open links from Mac Mail. The firefox window will come to the front, but the link won't open. If I set Safari or Chrome as the default browser, they work.

    The following worked for me:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/684867
"Problem: I had the same problem but with mac osx 10.5.8, Firefox 3.6.6 sometimes prints and sometimes does not, but the preview was always blank and I could not save to pdf file.
Solution: I downloaded Firefox 3.5.10, installed it on my desktop and opened it, tried print preview and it worked, quit Firefox 3.5.10 and ran 3.6.6 and voila! print preview is working fine and I can save to pdf fine.
I guess running 3.5.10 fixes the profile in a certain way. I have no idea how that happened but it worked."
