Opening links (maybe related to mac "newbe" query...)

Hello. I can't seem to open links, especially pdf file from within webpages and have the text big enough to read... the browser window is full screen maximized but file is shown therein as the whole page. when this happens in other applications there is always an option to change to zoom but i can't find this feature in safari..

I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

I want to eliminate or control popup windows that have no relevance and start with "open link in new window" . How do I control or eliminate. It is a nuisance.

When I am searching the web and click on an item, I get a pop up window that contains 6 choices beginning with "open link in new window". Most of the time this a nuisance and I want to get rid of it, but it follows me all over the page and keeps popping up when I click on the same item again. If I don't want to use it, how can I make sure it doesn't reappear?
Also, another question. Firefox keeps asking me to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.19, but when I try, it will download. What gives? I have a Mac Pro with OSX version 10.6.7.

It sounds that you are opening the right-click context menu, maybe by pressing the mouse button for too long.

Firefox does not open links in new tab

Using Firefox 3.6.15 with XPPro, if I click on a link in Google (or on this site for that matter), it will not open a new tab. In the past, I had no such problem before 3..6.16.
My husband is using Firefox 3.6.15 with XPHome and his does open links in new tab.
I have not added any new toolbars sin updating to 3.6.15. Only use the Roboform toobar and Firefox's.
I thought this might have something to do with Google, which I think used to have an option to open links in a new page, but can't find any such options on Google search page now.

Maybe it is a conflict between Vimperator and a TabMix-like extension?
I am not sure but go check your tab related perfs and add-on options may help.

Cannot open links in new tab without holding Ctrl

There is only one option i see in preferences for opening sites in new tabs. and it is called "Open links from applications..."
Even with this checked, by default all links open in a new window, unless I hold down Ctrl while clicking the link.
There MUST be a way to set ALL links to open in a new tab like every other browser I've used. No??

Every single time this topic is raised, someone tries to claim there is a work-around, while seemingly forgetting that this is the Safari for Windows forum, and not the Safari for Mac forum.
This is the single biggest glaring omission from Safari for Windows. It completely defeats the purpose of even having tabs, which makes me wonder what in the world were the developers thinking.
Safari is a very pretty and fast browser, but I don't know many people who actually use it on a Windows machine due to the inability to simply open links in a new tab without right clicking or holding some extra button down. It's also the only mainstream browser for Windows that isn't capable of this simple task.
Having watched this issue since Safari 3, without ever seeing any response other then "oh, but just do this work-around" (that only works for Macs), my guess is we'll never see it happen. The funny thing is that when you look at the ini files that can be changed on the Mac version, they are pretty much identical to the Windows version. So, the "fix" not working simply means that whoever was in charge of the part of code related to tabs when porting to Windows must have consciously decided there was no need for the ability to open links in new tabs.
Proving once again that software engineers can be utterly clueless about the usability of their software.

Mac Newbie TM & Spotlight issues

I got my new iMac on 21 September 2012. I have a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive on my Netgear DGN 2200 router which Spotlight never really managed to index - it always estimates a huge amount of time and even if I let it go it doesn't get it done.
When I started TM backup it extimated about a month and I let it go because I thought it would figure out that it was a new / empty machine quite quickly and the estimate would come down. After two days and only 2-3GB backed up I stopped it and deleted all of the backup data and started again. Same issue.
Then I turned off spotlight and eventually got a week-long backup done.
I then updated to 10.7.5 supplemental upgrade which apparently fixes long TM backup issues.
Now, with spotlight turned back on TM has been taking forever with its incremental backups. For example, I turned it on an hour ago and opened pages & Chrome, then it started a backup 50 minutes ago. It says "Backing up: 116.6 MB of 116.6 MB" but it's still going 50 MINUTES later!!! update: 75minutes later
Spotlight is still not indexing my external storage which is an issue because I have all of my work on the external.
I have been trawling through this forum but being a mac newbie I don't understand all of the jargon - sudo this and that, and if I get a solution it does need to be step by step. I have always been tinkering around under the hood of previous M$ machines and would be a 'power-user' so I'm not stupid but it's a whole new language for me.
Should I upgrade to Mountatin Lion?
Is there any way I can downgrade to 10.6?
Is there any way to search without using spotlight? On the pc I used to be able to search non-indexed locations, it would just take a little while.
Time Machine is not trying to backup my NAS drive is it? From my understanding it doesn't do that but maybe it's confused ... ???

I don't use raid myself so I'll leave that explanation to others. I configure my Mac Pro with 4 drives. My main drive is my boot drive and has about 300+ gigs free. I have a backup drive for that which I use SuperDuper for backup, creating a fully bootable backup drive in the event my main drive has a problem. I only back up to that drive when my machine is "good and solid". That allows me to throw on the most recent update without much concern. If there is a problem then I just boot from my backup drive and I'm back up and running just fine. I also use the backup of my main drive for my Final Cut Pro scratch drive. I copy the files for my movies to external drives for archive when needed. For my data drives I use another set of 500 gig drives. One for data (mostly photos) and one to backup using superduper whenever I feel like it. You could automate it all with Retrospect for the data drives if you wanted to. I don't think Retrospect will make a bootable backup of a main drive. I use Western Digital WD5000KS ddrives, 500 megs each. They make another model for those wanting RAID. Set up RAID, by all means, if squeeking every ounce of speed is your goal to be sure. My setup is conservative, redundant and very safe. A simple search here or on google for RAID0 or such will turn up much info on raid configuations.

Can't open links/hyperlinks in my mails....

Maybe its not the right forum, but I havn't been able to find help elsewhere. I'm using Outlook for Mac 2011 but can't open links/hyperlinks in my mails. The cursor turns into a hand as expected, but nothing happens when I try to activate the link. My default browser is Safari. Please help if anyone can..

I don't use Outlook so I cannot test anything here.
Is Outlook the only application that this occurs?
If it is only Outlook, I would suggest that its a setting or bug in Outlook causing the issue.
Instead of just clicking on the link, try Command (or right) Click and see if there is an 'Open Link' or 'Open URL' selection in the contextual menu.
If you can open the link that way, see if there is a setting in the preferences in Outlook that stops links being opened.

Can't open links and go to Google and Wikipedia

After I've been logged on to my Mac for a while, maybe 30-60 minutes, I can't open any links from any website and programs like Skype. It doesn't say "error" or "couldn't connect..." or anything, it's just a white page. And for some reason I can't go to Google or Wikipedia, which is weird. I'm using Safari but i have also tried Firefox and I've tried it on my guest account, but it's still the same. The only way to solve it is to restart the computer. I can access Google via the search bar, but the links doesn't work. For example: I tried to open the Apple article on Wikipedia from Google. Ignore that. Safe mode will give you different results that you cannot bring across. The problem seems to be that your DNS resolution is borked, this is what translates web adresses (www.webaddress.com) into IP adresses (195.234.65.23). Open terminal on your normal Mac install (non-safe mode) and type this:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
Then try again. If that does not fix it, then:
Go to Applications > Utilities > Network Utility.
Click on the Ping tab and type www.google.com in the host box.
The first line will look something like this:
ping google.com
PING google.com (192.0.32.10): 56 data bytes
you should then get 6 lines like this trying to contact google:
64 bytes from 192.0.32.10: icmp_seq=0 ttl=240 time=98.767 ms
64 bytes from 192.0.32.10: icmp_seq=1 ttl=240 time=96.521 ms
64 bytes from 192.0.32.10: icmp_seq=2 ttl=240 time=95.766 ms

64 bytes from 192.0.32.10: icmp_seq=5 ttl=240 time=93.367 ms
Press CTRL+C if they carry on past 6 lines then you should get this:
6 packets transmitted, 6 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 93.367/95.912/98.767/1.599 ms
The numbers do no matter except for the packet loss one. just above. If that is 100% then your ISP is to blame. If not and you still can't get on google, post that output here and I will tell you what the problem is.

Ok, I used to be able to open links up in a new Tab using my middle mouse button. However, I updated firefox with the automatic Updates on the 26th of October and now I no longer can open links with my middle mouse button. Why? I use this feature just about every time I go searching on the internet so I really would like it back. Right-clicking on links and selecting "Open Link in New Tab" opens a blank tab.

Seems like opening links in new tabs just doesn't work in any fashion. I right-clicked a link (several, actually) to open it in a new tab. It opened a blank tab. No sign of ever acknowledging the link, nothing in the URL bar. Just blank.
Wonder if this is related to my earlier question about opening links from Thunderbird being broken as well...

the user jay_ff shows how to do it using the Menu Editor Add-on
1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"
5. and Voila! You may also change other menu options if you want to!
I tried jay_ff method first and found that indeed changing the Main Context Menu did cause the hotlink context menu to change as well.

Open link in background when anchor's attribute "href" contains javascript

I support web enterprise-level application with some legacy parts, where some windows are opened by using window.open command inside of anchor's href attribute. (e.g. <a href="javascript:MyFunction('../someurl', '2')" ../> ... function MyFunction(url,
id) { window.open(url, id) ...)
Now I have to open link in the background by pressing ctrl + click (or middle click), but for IE (9, 10, 11) it always becomes focused.
Are there any ways to open those new tabs in the background (only when ctrl is pressed)?
P.S. I know that it would be better to provide actual link inside of href attribute, but unfortunatelly I don't have such options, due to application specific.

I think mine issue not related to security and popup blocker settings. What I try to achieve is similar behaviour as we have for links (<a>) with href attribute fullfilled with actual url. Specifically
* by single click new tab should be opened focused (this is fine)
* by shift + click it should be opened in new browser window (this is also fine)
* by middle (ctrl + click) new tab should be opened in background. This feature doesn't work well, because new tab alway opens focused and this is what I'm trying to fix, or at least find official proof that IE works in this way with javascript

[SOLVED] Xfce terminal open links with wrong browser.

After installing Opera as second browser, xfce terminal began to open links with it, instead of my default browser - Firefox.
I right click on an URL, choose 'Open Link' and it opens in Opera.
Firefox is set as default browser in Settings -> Preferred Applications -> Web Browser
xdg-open http://archlinux.org
- opens Firefox
exo-open http://archlinux.org
- opens Firefox
After quick search through xfce terminal sources i found it uses some function - gtk_show_uri.
I googled it, found that topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140028 and tried the solution:
cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
[Added Associations]
x-scheme-handler/mailto=exo-mail-reader.desktop
x-scheme-handler/http=firefox-browser.desktop
strangely it doesn't help.
After all righ click url in terminal and 'Open Link' still uses Opera.
Any ideas? What else can i do to find out a reason?

Tried BROWSER envar - doesnt help, and as i understand it must work only for cli apps.
Editing of ~/.config/mimeapps.list doesnt help eather:

Safari wont let me open links in new tabs anymore? Please help!?

On my Macbook, I'm using Safari as my browser.
Everything was fine until this morning; suddenly Safari will not give me the option of opening links from one page in another tab in the same window.
For example, if I'm browsing on EBay and want to open a search result in a new tab of the same window, usually when I would right click on my track pad or magic mouse, it would say "Open link in new tab" or "Open link in new window". However, now when I right click, it just says, "Open link" "Open link in new window" and "Copy link".
I haven't changed any settings or anything on my Macbook whatsoever in the last 3 hours (at least that I'm aware of). Can anyone please tell me how to get this back to normal?
Also, it seems that when I right click anywhere on a page, I only see the options "back" and "reload" whereas before there was "view source" etc.
Please help!

From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, *make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64*. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) *make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*
  Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If Safari still won't let you open links in new tabs, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
If your forum profile is correct (10.6.1) go to the Apple Menu/Software Updates ...
Very important to keep your system software up to date.
If you install the 10.6.3 update make sure and repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
