Opening M2V in FCP

hi all. i'm new to FCP, was using pinnacle before. i have HD footage i had captured in pinnacle in format M2V, which for some reason unbeknownst to me, puts the audio in one file and the video in a separate file. i'm not sure how to connect the clips together when i open the audio and video files in FCP, such that when i mark "in" and "out" points on the video, they will apply to the audio clips as well. at this point i plan to resort to re-capturing all the footage direct to FCP. i was wondering if anyone knows of an easier way to fix this problem.
also, when i open the footage in pinnacle, pinnacle tells me the dimensions are 1440x1080, but when i open the same footage in FCP, FCP says the dimensions are 1440x810. any ideas what would cause this discrepancy?
thanks for any help

Great tutorial.
It will show you how to convert that file into a QT format that you can edit in FCP.

  • Cannot open projects in FCP - "General Error"

Well, just upgraded to OS 10.4.10, and FCP to 5.1 on my 867 quicksilver. several external lacie hard drives. 1.5 GB ram. after the archive and install of the OS, I could not open projects in FCP 4.5 due "General Error". I upgraded to FCP 5.1 and experience same issue.
at the time of OS upgrade, i also changed my second internal drive for a larger one, and put the original one, with its original name, in an external firewire housing. It appears on my desktop and is included in the FCP system preferences, so i assume that is not a problem.
    any ideas?

I updates to 5.1.4, and issue turned into "project file unreadable or from more recent version of FCP" when file is actually from older version. THIS problem was solved by disconnecting all external drives, opening 4.5 project and updating to 5.1.4, reconnecting and setting external drives in FCP system pref, and then reconnecting media.
I have had this problem also happen with a project i already successfully opened in 5.1.4 ...turns out i had opened it with some network drives on my desktop and then removed them. I put one back, it opened successfully, I got rid of the network drive and resaved and now it opens fine. In other words the message "project unreadable or from a later version of Final Cut" really indicates there is some drive rooting problem, not a problem with project file or what generation it is.
hope that helps anyone out there. sure is a relief to be working again.

  • Error opening .m2v files

I have been using QuickTime Pro to open .m2v files for several years. Now, for some reason, I get an error: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file." These clips are short promo videos, about 30 seconds in length. I am unable to get the producer to alter the format. As stated, this is only a recent problem. I still have a registered, QuickTime Pro license. This is only affecting 1 of my 2 Macs. Have QT 7.5.5, and am downloading 7.6.2 to see if that helps.

You do have the mpeg-2 from Apple, right? You need this component to watch mpeg-2 videos in Quicktime.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
I you do and you have a Intel computer. I believe you need the Intel version. Go to the Apple store and open up you account/downloaded purchased. You should be able to download the Intel version from there at no cost.

  • QT7 quits when opening m2v files

Everything had been fine for years, until this morning:
Now, when I try to open .m2v files with QT 7.03, QT unexpectely quits. Even if i simply select the file to open, QT quits.
As I said, last nite all was fine.
What's even weirder is this: if i drag and drop the file to QT, it plays. But I need to do trimming and pasting, and as far as i can see, when u drop a file, the player window doesn't offer up the scrubbing bar and controls.
I've run tech tools, disk warrior, re-installed QT and made sure the f. m2v files aren't corrupt--even went back to pristine files I had archived on dvd.
    Any ideas???
    thanks

Try the files while logged in as a different user. If they work the conflict is in your other user Home folder. Third party software is one conflict and you can compare the two users.
Make sure you're using the most recent version of Apple's MPEG-2 Playback Component (version 6.4). Older (6.3) doesn't work any longer.

  • Boris 3D text editing window won't open without deleting FCP preferences

So, in my FCP7 projects, the Boris 3D text editing window won't open without deleting FCP preferences first. I've tried new projects, old projects, open all new windows on top settings. Once I delete the preferences, viola, opens right up. I can rebuild my preferences and after just a few days it won't open again... without preference delete.
I'm on a Macbook Pro 17'" i7 and do most of my editing on a 27" Apple Cinema Display. This is the only reason I could come up with. However I did some editing from the Macbook's screen and after 1 day, the Boris 3D editing window again refused to open. I have no idea. Is this is a known bug, etc.?
    Help!

With Final Cut not running, trash the Boris Title 3D preference file.
    /Library/Preferences/Title 3D Preferences
Also, you could have a corrupt or duplicate font file. Open FontBook and check it out.

  • Can't open m2v file with mpeg2

I upgraded my QT mpegp2 to 6.4 buy putting in my FCP 4 SS# then dowloading it from the website but all my m2v file got the compresser icon on them and when I try to open them I get the error "QuickTime cannot open the file: "1_2.m2v"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)" I tried reinstalling but still no luck.
    Thanks.

  • Unable to open project file FCP 4

I too just started using FCP 4 and thought everything was fine - uploaded my video last night and then saved before going home - but perhaps I made a mistake in where I saved my file or something because today it won't open! Please help.

If you're using Final Cut Pro you're in the wrong forum. Try the FCP forum and give full details of exactly what you did, the steps you took, what you're trying to open and where you saved it.

  • ITunes won't open after uninstalling FCP 7

I had to reinstall FCP 7 so i used the "uninstall FCS" application that came with it. After doing so i went to check my itunes while it re-installed. I suddenly got a " you are not authorized on this computer" message. And only had an OK as a response. This only came up once and it still confuses me. then itunes crashed and i got the re-open dialogue box. "no biggie" i'll just re-open. then the same message popped up. And now for 24 hours i have had no access to itunes.
at this point it starts to "checking your library" and then after about 3 seconds it stops and crashes. i have tried every fix i've found. But here's the Crash report. please help i think it's a problem with core.

  • Issues opening projects in FCP 7

I am having issues opening up my project in FCP 7...when I go to open a project, only the browser window opens and I can't seem to open the timeline and canvas...when I go to the Window tab, Canvas and Timeline are not highlighted as options for me, how do I get those windows open?
Also, I imported .MOV movie files into Final Cut that opened up in my viewer window and played fine on my timeline the other day, now I get a "General Error" "Not enough memory" warning that comes up when I try to open, is there a reason for this and a way around it?
    Thanks!

Unless you are planning to output the timeline to tape, you can turn off the dropped frame warning. It is not a problem if the canvas is dropping frames while you edit as it is only a reference display of the timeline.
In Final Cut Pro, go to the menu Final Cut Pro > User Preferences and on the General Tab, make sure Report Dropped Frames during playback is UNCHECKED:

but when I go to the "RT" drop down menu, the only option I see is: Play Base Layer Only.  The other options that are normally there are not coming up.
What are your sequence settings? Click anywhere on the timeline and type Command + 0 {zero} to see your sequence settings. Either report those settings, or take a screen shot of the sequence settings and post that here.
Are you attempting to edit to a timeline set to an H.264 codec?

  • Can't open colleague's fcp timeline - need advice badly

    Hi everyone,
I've not used FCP before, so I may be making some very basic mistakes; at this point I'm completely befuddled. Here's the situation (I'll try to be brief, but I don't want to leave out information that might be important):
I've been asked to make some changes to a video that someone else cut, on FCP. I was given a fw hard drive that has two folders: one is named 'Final Cut Pro Program Files', and it contains three folders ('Audio Render Files', 'Capture Scratch' and 'Render Files') that seem to have nothing in them, AND three '.fcp' files (one a longer version, one a short version, and I don't know what the other is), which I'm assuming are timelines for three versions of the video that this guy cut. Along with the 'Final Cut Program Files' folder, there's a folder 'Raw Video' which contains three folders, each relating to the three fcp project files, and each containing QT files.
My conundrum is that, when I launch FCP and carefully navigate in the 'Choose a File' window to the folder on the external hard drive marked 'Final Cut Pro Program Files', the three .fcp files are in here, but they're greyed out... so I can't import them.
When I emailed the fellow who created these files (I don't know which version of FCP he was using, by the way, but I think it was an older one. I'm using version 5), he wrote back to say: "I just double-clicked on this file and the whole sequence downloaded and then popped open"
He added that "the browser or link from source files to the timeline is mostly in the "bigger file" -- in other words, you need to have all three open at the same time".
This has me confused even more.
Can anyone advise me? I'm not being paid to do this work, but it's for a good cause (helping people in Lesotho), and I told the woman who asked me to do it that it shouldn't be hard to do - - and now I'm caught and falling behind.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Malcolm

Let's see if we can get this sorted.
first off, put the project files on your desktop. don't try to open them from the fw drive.
After you've moved them simply double click one of them. It SHOULD launch fcp and open the project. If this is from an older version of FCP, you will get a message that the file needs to be updated. Click OK.
IF the media shows up as "offline" you will get a prompt to reconnect the media. Follow the prompts and point at the fw drive. Be sure to click the "relative paths" box.
If this doesn't open it up for you, post back.
And you had better keep that manual handy, you're gonna need it!

  • Opening an old FCp project in new Final cut?

I was working on a previous version and recently got the new Final Cut X but now my project won't open? Any ideas?

Unfortunately, this is just not supported in FCX, and Apple has stated they have no plans to add it in. There are some third party developers working on solutions, but no products or timelines have been announced yet.
The best thing to do is to finish your project in FCP and use FCX for new projects.
Eventually, converters may become available to port your old projects to FCX.

  • How to open a project FCP 7 in FCP 4.5?

I can't open a project (i've made in fcp 7) in fcp 4.5. I've tried to make an XML-document (all five available options), but it doesn't work.
    Anyone an idea?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum!
If memory serves me correct it should be XML version 1. Did you highlight what you want to export in the Browser and choose File>Export>XML?
You are trying to open with FCP 4.5 not FCP 4 correct?
What do you need to go to 4.5 for? If you are working in a codec that isn't supported by FCP 4.5 then you will have an issue. What codec are you working with?

  • Old Project Opens in New FCP with only Browser and Viewer

I can't open a project created in previous FCP and get the timeline or canvas, even when I click on Window-Arrange-Standard. I just want to send that old movie as a quicktime movie, self-contained to the external hard drive where I have the remake of that movie, but can't get to its timeline to select and do so. I'm also afraid I can't find this forum again for any answer you post, so can you please also send email? I promise not to use it for anything but this question. [email protected] I don't know what OSX version number I have, but it's called Tiger
    Thanks,

If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like you can actually open the project file, but cannot see your sequence.
Have you looked for the sequence in your Browser window and tried double-clicking it? The only way to have your Canvas and Timeline windows visible is to have a sequence opened.

  • Open/Import older FCP projects? I can't find how.

Could it really be that Final Cut Pro X can't open projects from other versions of FCP? I don't see a way to do it.
I hope I'm missing something really obvious.

    Me too...............
When opening old projects, it still opens in old Final Cut Pro.
Import in FCP X doesn't seem to have any "import old projects"-style
