Opening mail causes it to not respond

When I open the mail application it pops up but doesn't display any of my messages that I had stored there and it freezes up and I have to force quit out of it. Do I reinstall it? If so, how? and will I lose my old messages?

Don’t reinstall anything.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
A. Holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
B. With no Internet connection.
You may also try trashing the Mail cache:
1. (Force) Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Caches/.
3. Locate the Mail cache folder (not to be confused with the ~/Library/Mail folder where all your mail is stored) and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted after opening Mail and checking that all your mail is there, i.e. after making sure that you didn’t remove the ~/Library/Mail folder by mistake).
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

    Open the system menu via Alt+Space or click the Firefox icon on the title bar and see if you can resize that window.
    If that works then close Firefox to save that setting.

    You could try booting into Safe Mode to see if that will help. And "Repair Permissions" in Disk Utility.
    Have you got Keychain set to open on Login or is it attempting to open on it's own.

  • Xdg-open is indecisive and causes applications to not respond!

    For some reason, xdg-open will not respond usually when only called once on a file. Repeating the command rapidly however will work eventually (!?)
    $ touch foo.txt
    $ xdg-open foo.txt
    $ xdg-open foo.txt
    $ xdg-open foo.txt # after rapid [up-key]+[enter]s, this will work, for example
    $ xdg-mime query filetype foo.txt
    text/plain
    $ xdg-mime query default text/plain
    org.gnome.gedit.desktop
    It looks like everything should work fine, from the examples given above, but the problem is there. As a result, I have to repeat the command rapidly in the command line to work, and in Chromium I have to keep on clicking "open in folder" to get Nautilus to launch
    I remember when the problem started - it was when I installed libreoffice, and for whatever not-so-smart reason, it sets itself as the default app for text/plain, and application/javascript, in my limited usage. So I used:
    $ xdg-mime default gedit.desktop text/plain
    $ xdg-mime default gedit.desktop application/javascript
    ... to try and solve the issue, however I faced the same symptoms I am facing now, and even after removing .local/applications/*, I'm still experiencing the same problems
    I'm in desperate need of some help, and would appreciate anyone who has insight on this

    I've had this bug ever since GNOME 3.14 came in to Arch but have never found anybody else reporting it so I thought it was something specific to my configuration. Glad to see some others have it!
    If you run xdg-open once then it does start nautilus but nautilus does not open the window, e.g. "xdg-open .". Nautilus will stay running for about 1 min and it you run xdg-open again within that time it will work and open the window. As soon as Nautilus stops (or after you stop it with nautlius -q), then the next invocation of xdg-open will not work.
    PS later edit: I should point out that, consistent with my description of the problem above, if you use Nautilus to manage your desktop (i.e. set "Icons on Desktop" in GNOME Tweak Tool) then you won't see this bug because Nautilus is always running.

  • All Gawker websites cause massive slowdowns, Not Responding status (but it rarely crashes), and don't always load properly, regardless of the number of open tabs or programs.

    Any time I navigate to one of the Gawker Media sites, Firefox slows down massively. The page loads extremely slowly, and the program freezes up. I often get a (Not Responding) message up at the top of the screen. Other programs on my computer are unaffected. This rarely (only twice in dozens of tries) actually crashed Firefox. It eventually comes back and everything runs fine, on that tab and others, until I try to move to or add another Gawker Media page. Occassionally the Gawker sites don't seem to load properly, but I suspect that may be an unrelated issue, caused by ABP or NoScript blocking ads or pop-ups on individual pages.

  • Mail hang and is not responding in activity monitor after mavericks update

    I click on the mail icon in my dock it just hangs and wont open. The activity monitor says it is just not responding. Any suggestions?

    You have a program running that is incompatible. What third-party sound or audio applications are you running? It will be one of those. If you quit them the problem should disappear. You will have to force quit coreaudio and UserEventAgent via Activity Monitor or restart the computer but do not run the third-party application(s).

  • Anyone experiencing Mail.app in fullscreen not responding after screensaver?

    Hello all!
    I did a quick search in the forum but found nothing related.  I am noticing that my Mail.app that is in fullscreen is not responding to mouse clicks (ie I can't click on Inbox) after screen saver has started.  I don't know if time plays a role however I am noticing the issue after 15 mins, my break.  Anyone experiencing the same?
    ~Gregory

    I have proven that the problem is being caused by the Software Update HT204210.
    I went and purchased new iMac (LOADED) biggest, best iMac I could buy.  New iMac has the most recent versions of softwares and OS, EXCEPT the latest update, Software Update HT204210.
    System ran perfectly.  Email was working as designed.  No hangs ups, no errors.
    Then the automatic Software Update ran last night (03/02/15) and installed Software Update HT204210.  Now today 03/03/15 the system hangs and Mail stops responding.

  • In email when switching from 1 mail to another ff "not responding" how to fix.

    when checking email then switch to another ff locks up and on top it says ff "NOT RESPONDING" Then it turns almost white. Sometimes it will flash brightly and then start working, sometimes needs to restart. This all started when ff updated itself to version26. No problem in ver 25. Writing this I am using "Ice Dragon 26, which is built from ff, but have no trouble like I do with ff and ff has been my favorite. What to do?

    Yahoo! mail? Many, many users have discovered all kinds of problems and glitches with Yahoo! mail in Firefox when using an old bookmark saved before Yahoo!'s recent server changes.
    I suggest clearing your Yahoo cookies and entering through the main page to get a better address for your current mail server.
    To remove your Yahoo cookies -- save any pending work first -- call up the Cookies dialog while viewing any page on yahoo.com (or your Yahoo site). You can use either:
    * right-click the page > View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Tools menu > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
    Then go to one of these Yahoo addresses and click on login or mail from there:
    * Yahoo home page: https://www.yahoo.com/
    * My Yahoo page: https://my.yahoo.com/
    * General mail redirect: https://mail.yahoo.com/

  • Mail app locks up (Not Responding)

    I have an iMac (Late 2012) running Yosemite (10.10.2).  Has been working flawlessly until recent issues with Mail app freezing with the Spinning Pin-Wheel of Death.  I have to Force Quit, shows Mail (Not Responding).

  • Mail incessantly loading AND not responding

    hello, thank you for reading my post!
    i have a problem: i got my mac membership a few months ago, set up mail, & everything was working beautifully. then about some time last week, when i clicked on "mail," the mail application opened, but my inbox was empty. the beachball started spinning around, letting me know that it was loading. i wasn't fazed at first...but it kept doing that for about 15 minutes. i can't click on anything or manipulate any buttons (file, edit, help..nada). i always have to "force quit" mail from the apple (it shows up in the little "force quit" window as "not responding"). oh, and i can never force quit while in mail, i always have to open another program like safari or something such to be able to do it. i'd really appreciate your feedback..please help
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    thank you for answering to my post actually, you know what, mail was just being ..foolish. i was taking pictures in photo booth, and by accident i clicked on "email." Mail loaded, and voilà! what do you know, there goes all my mail from my multiple accounts. only, some of the mail that i had previously deleted (from my multiple inboxes) was still there. i still can't believe that the solution was so simple..and accidental. i'm sorry if i made you go through a lot of work. i waited about a week to make sure that the problem wouldn't fix itself.
    thank you so much!! if mail acts up again and my "solution" (lol if you can call it that..) doesn't work, i'll try what you said. thanks again!

    I also recently installed a program that shows -all- open files, and parent.lock is not listed, and thus not closable/unlockable from there.
