Opening mail in safari

Hi,
I am new to the MAC, in Safari when you close or delete an e-mail the next e-mail open is there a way to stop this action. I do not like the mail to open automatically, specially if there is an attachment next.

Hello, I do not have the answer to this, but I'm writing because I have been wondering the same thing, and I'm hoping someone will read this and give us both a good reply.
Previously, (before I had a MAC and used MAIL) I used Outlook Express, and one great feature was that that system could be configured so that new mail items appeared "closed" (meaning they were still bold, but viewable in the lower window) until you double-clicked on them.
Now, using MAIL, I find that if my cursor simply lands on the item, as in the instance described by CAF480, the item will "open" and cease to be highlighted in bold type. Now, this may or may not actually be "opening" the mail, but it does make mail that you may not have yet read appear to be read, and as a result it's easy to mistakenly overlook messages. A friend's MAC MAIL is somehow set up so that, like in Outlook, you must double-click to get the mail to open, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to set this up. Please, does anyone know how to do this?? THANKS!
NB: I already know that you can use the "mark unread" function to make the mail items bold and bulleted, but this still "opens" when your cursor touches it, and is therefore no real solution.
