Opening Microsoft Word Documents on Mac Issues

As a graphics professional I have to occasionally open client's Microsoft Word files and convert to something printable.
I have a late Mac with up-to-date Mountain Lion and the latest MS Word and a vast collection of OpenType fonts... but no Word document from a client opens to look like it is supposed to, with fonts replaced, type overflows, images moved and more. If I open it in Pages it's still a mess. If I open the document on my Windows PC it's fine.
Am I missing something that would make opening a MS Word document on my Mac work reliably?

Besides Csound1's useless information which is true that Word for Mac isn't up to par compared to the Windows version. The formatting used in the Windows version is different than what is used for Mac so the fonts and format which will obviously will look different. This is not a OS problem but a application issue so your best option is to go to Microsoft Office for Mac Support page http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac
Good luck.

  • Opening Microsoft Word Documents

I love this word program but I wa wondering if there was a way it could open Microsoft Word documents sent to me in an email. It is really annoying that I have to pay $200 for a Microsoft product just to open other people's sent documents to me...it seems like there has to be an easier way or that MAC would come up with a way to transfer the Word documents so that they could be opened with Pages...

Umm, you can open word docs with Pages. I do it all the time, just open them either by changing their association in Get Info or by choosing Open With and selecting Pages. You will probably see a warning if there are styles or fonts that didn't translate, but other than that it "just works."

Spotlight opens Microsoft Word document underneath an already open document

New Lion Feature. If you quit an app that has open windows and documents, it will restore state when restarted; in other words, reopen all the stuff it that was previously open. That's why the new document gets bumped underneath the old.
If too avant-garde for your tastes, visit the General pane in System Preferences and uncheck "Restore windows when quitting...".

  • CAN'T OPEN MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENTS AFTER DOWNLOADING MAVERICK

I downloaded Maverick OS X 10.9.3 and now I can't open my Microsoft Word documents!  HELP!!
The message I receive when trying to open a document read:  You can't open the application "Microsoft Word" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
I wish I knew this before I upgraded to Maverick.  It happened to my iphotos as well but after purchasing new software for iphoto, I have been able to retrieve my photos.
I hope I don't have to do the same for my documents.
    Thanks

I wouldn't recommend buying the boxed version of Office 2011. A new version of Office is coming out in a few months and you'll be stuck with old software. The next version of Office will be subscription only. You can buy Office 365 now and it will automatically upgrade you for free when the new version comes out. This is a monthly fee.
If paying monthly is not an option for you, you can also look at buying Office 2008. While it's End of Life software like Office 2004 (this means it will receive no further updates) it will run in Mavericks with only a few minor glitches. You might be able to buy Office 2008 at a more reasonable price. Otherwise I would like at LibreOffice or OpenOffice that Esquared mentioned above.

  • How can Tiger open Microsoft Word documents sent by e-mail?

I recently upgraded to Tiger and use Appleworks 6, which is unable to read the Microsoft Word documents I frequently receive by e-mail. Is there any way I could read such documents, or should I get Microsoft Word? If so, which number/level would you advise? (I'm happy with Appleworks.)

Do the problematic Word attachments end in ".doc" or in ".docx"?
Neither AppleWorks 6 nor TextEdit will handle Microsoft's marketing-driven "improved" file format used in Mac Office 2008 / Windows Office 2007 (which is almost-but-not-really based on XML). There's a backwards-compatible option in those versions of Word to "Save As" Word 97 -2004 format (.doc). The practical solution where I work is to track down anyone sending .docx and threaten them with grievous bodily harm unless they resend as .doc and swear to never use .docx again.
Microsoft has a converter that (allegedly) converts the new format to the vastly more common one, but that requires a previous copy of Office (Office 2004 or Office X).
You can try the Mac OS X Dashboard widget DocX Converter instead.

  • Can't open Microsoft Word document through SharePoint

Since upgrading to Firefox 35, I am no longer able to open Microsoft Word files through SharePoint. When I select "Edit in Microsoft Word," I get the error message "No connectivity with the server. [FILENAME] can't be opened because the server couldn't be contacted."
Note that this is specific to my Mac. I can open Word files on SharePoint when I use my VMWare Windows simulator.
    Any suggestions for a fix?

see if any of these can help.

  • How do I open Microsoft Word documents?

When i double-click. Word documents there is an unspecified error in opening the documents on myniPad 1.  any suggestions?

How did you get them onto the iPad? Where are you looking at them? There is no double-clicking involved - just tap on it once, depending on the app you're in.
If you mail them to yourself, you should be able to view them on the iPad in mail. If you want to edit them, you'll have to purchase an app such as Documents to Go.

  • Can i open microsoft word documents in pages?

I need a word processor for college and if i can use pages instead of word then i can save a whole lot of money.

    Hi Rich,
If your instructors want you to turn in assignments in Word format, then I'd advise you to get Word. If your work will be Printed or used in PDF format, Pages will do nicely. It's not that you can't export to Word from Pages, it's that you don't need the hassles of semi-accurate conversions.
If money is a big concern, you can install one of the free clones of Office. LibreOffice is generally well regarded for this purpose.

  • Cannot Interact with Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac after Opening

After I open Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac, either by opening a .docx file or opening Word from the Applications folder, I am not able to interact with the application whatsoever.  Selecting its icon in the dock does not bring any of its windows to the front, nor does it show the Word menu at the top; instead, it still shows the menu of whatever application was previously selected.  But the windows do exist if I move other windows out of the way.  If I do get to a Word window, I cannot click on anything, select anything, resize it, close it, or scroll.
Other info: If I click and hold the Word icon in the doc, the menu displays as if the application were functioning normally; it does not show a Force Quit option, as it would if Word were frozen.  I do not see any dialogue boxes or anything that would take the focus away from the other windows.
Background: I was able to successfully use Word without any problems before today, using the same installation of the application, same computer, and same operating system. I also never had this problem before Mavericks, though, as I said before, I didn't always have this problem in Mavericks.
How do I get Word to function normally again?  Thanks for any help you can provide!

After letting Word run for quite a while, a popup window told me there was an issue with the database.  I opened the Microsoft Database Utility and rebuilt the database.  It seems to be working fine now.

  • Since I downloaded Lion I can no longer access my microsoft Word documents.  Is there anything I can do?

Since I downloaded Lion in order to use iphone 4s & icloud, I can no longer open Microsoft Word documents.

You have Word/Office 2004 and that won't run on Lion. You have three options:
    1. Upgrade to Office 2008 or 2011
    2. Download the free Office suite Libreoffice
    3. Buy Apple's 'Pages' (for word processing) programs from the App store.

  • I downloaded Lion onto my Mac, and now cannot open or access any of my Microsoft word documents or Power Points. Is there a fix for this? I need my documents

I downloaded Lion onto my Mac, and now cannot open or access any of my Microsoft word documents or Power Points. Is there a fix for this? I need my documents

If it's because you were using Office 2004, the eight year old version of Office that was written when Intel processors were not used in Macs, then there will be no fix. Lion dropped support for PowerPC applications, as has been widely reported since Lion's release last August.
You can upgrade Office 2004 to Office 2008 or Office 2011. You can use iWorks 2009 that can open Microsoft files. You can use a number of free applications that are also capable of working with Microsoft documents. You can go back to Snow Leopard, if you have a backup. Or, if you have an external drive or room to add a partition to your current drive, you can install Snow Leopard on it.
Search these forums for more information. If this is your issue, it's been posted and answered several times a day since August 2011.

I recently updated to the OSX 10.8.3 Operating Sistem.  I am writing a book and now cannot open any word document I've created with the old system.  Could not find a newer version of the Microsoft Word Processing Program.  Is Pages the next thing? Can I recover my documents?  How?

I'm in the same boat: new to OS X and Mac, and in the middle of a book. I switched because I heard about the the ease of using Mac, but so far, for me, it's been a nightmare. I bought 2011 Office Mac and hate everything about it, the most recent being the inability to open or cut or paste any of my original word files. I understand that this could have easily been done with earlier versions, but not Mountain Lion (which I learned is what OSX is.) Since I work with language, I am amazed at the assumptions of the Apple community. It helps to use common language and explain even the basics.
So all the helpful hints to use the latest version of Office Mac are to no avail. Now what?
