Opening Microsoft Works files in OS X

I have some files that I saved as .wps back when I was a sad little user of Microsoft Works (they didn't even give you Word with a new computer back then, the cheapskates)... I need to open them somehow on my MacBook.
Anybody have any ideas for opening them successfully? When I double-click, it gives me an option of converting "from" text, rtf, and several other formats. Of course, when I do it in text, it's mainly messed up and incomplete and rtf doesn't open at all.
Thanks in advance, Almighty Ones.

As far as I know, there is no way to open a Works document in OS X.
That software was proprietary to Microsoft, and I believe you'll need a Windows machine to open them.

Use a product such as OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Google Docs, iWork, or Microsoft Office 2008 or newer. In the case of Word documents, you can also use TextEdit.

How long does is take to convert a 1mb microsoft works file to pdf.  I have been trying to convert a file, and it seems like it is taking forever.

I'm sorry, but CreatePDF does not currently support Microsoft Works files.
You can convert the following file types: text (TXT, PS, RTF), Microsoft Office (DOC, XLS, PPT, PRJ), Open Office (ODT, ODP, ODS, ODG, ODF), Star Office (SWX, SXI, SXC, SXD, STW), Word Perfect (WPD), and image files (BMP, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG).

You can even use the Pages app that is installed on your computer. Finally you can buy a license of Office for Mac and have Word, Excel, PowerPoint and if you want Outlook too.

  • How to browse, view, open Microsoft Office files in Contribute CS4

To browse or view Microsoft Office files (not Office 2007)in Contribute CS4: (I won't say how long it took me to figure this out!)
    Make sure Contribute is closed.
    Open C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Contribute CS4\Configuration\ViewableExtTypes.txt
Add doc, xls, ppt to the list, save & close ViewableExtTypes.txt and restart Contribute/
It doesn't work for Office 2007 file extensions.

  • Recovering material from Microsoft Works files.

I created several documents using Microsoft Works on an older Windows XP PC. They were saved on a zip drive. I opened those files on my new iMac, and it recognized that they were not in any program that my Mac had, so it used some kind of program or option to recover the words from the Works files. They were somewhat out of order, but for the most part, what I had typed was still there, and all I had to do was copy and paste and edit into Microsoft Word for Mac. But, I've recently tried again to get the rest of the material that I had not copied and pasted, and now my Mac won't do the magic it did before. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi jon28127: You might want to try an office suite called NeoOffice. It lists MS Works files as one of its file types. You can then save the files as another file type. It is free and available here: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/download.php#download
    Hope this helps

  • Opening Microsoft Publisher file in Mac

Does anyone know of a way to open a Publisher file on a Mac. My son started a school project in publisher -- he needs to complete the project now as a home assignment. I guess they think everyone works with windows -- Ha.
    Any thought?
    Carl

Another course of action to take is to save out the .pub file into a .doc file to take home and work on then rehash the .doc file back into a .pub file. But that just seems to much to be had.
I thought that OpenOffice.org would open publisher files but then after the air cleared from the brain **** I had, it was Powerpoint files, hey, they both start with the letter 'P'. Publisher, Powerpoint, Presentation. LOL.
Nonetheless, converting .pub to .doc, working on .doc, then converting back to .pub is a way to go at this point, but that would be tripling the work, eh?

  • Trying to open Microsoft works .wps document.

I have loads of old microsoft .wps files and am trying to open them. I have tried office 2011 and when the document goes to open a window pops up with a list of options mentioning loads of programs and text formats and I have no idea which one I should choose or if any of them are the correct option.

That is what I do then I come to a window with a selection of options.

  • How do I open Apple Works files?

After installing 10.7.2 I can't open my old Apple Works files anymore.

You can open AppleWorks 6 text documents with Pages; AW6 spreadsheet docs with Numbers; and AW6 presentations with Keynote.

  • HT2518 How can I work with Microsoft Works files on a Mac?

I recently bought a Macbook Air (my first Mac) so everything is new to me.  I have spreadsheets and a few MS Works documents that I would like to access.  Would Pages/Numbers access these docs?  Thanks!

Works Document Viewer for the Mac can convert Microsoft Works for Windows documents. It cost a couple of bucks, but it's dead simple to use, and really, really fast. It's not an editor, though, and you'll lose some formatting in the process. Still, if you want to get the text out of your MSWorks document and into a Mac word processor (I prefer Pages), it's worth a look.

  • I want firefox to open Microsoft XPS files rather than use Internet Explorer

Microsoft's XPS file format (their take on PDF files) can be opened only by Internet Explorer. Does a plugin exist to allow XPS files to be opened in Firefox - if so I can't find one. I would have thought this was a common request!
To avoid having to deal with the time consuming "open with" dialogue I have made IE the default browser but I'd rather use Firefox.

Please see this support article on [[Session Restore]]. Follow the instructions under the "Configuring session restore" header. When you get to the step where it says "Show my windows and tabs from last time" you can choose from showing your homepage or showing a blank page instead.

  • Converting Microsoft Works file to Adobe

Does anyone else have this word processing software and tried
to convert files? If so, how did you get file to convert?

    Hello mvshorte,
    Thanks for your post!
I would suggest as a first option, to see if you can open
these files in Works, and export them out as another file format,
before converting the files with Acrobat.com
Here is a link to the help file page, with
    supported
    formats for conversion
    Cheers,
