Opening multipage pdf in CS5?

Hi
I have done some searching and it seems that Illustrator CS5 is not able to open a multipage pdf file.
I came across this plugin (for mac) Convert PDF Pages to Illustrator Artboards

My question is do I have to use this workaround to open a multipage pdf file in Illustrator CS5?
It seems like a very natural feature that should be a part of the program and am puzzled that it seems not to be. Hopefully I am wrong. That I just overlooked something.

the artboard feature is relatively new and when first introduced it was not envisioned as a page type of tool but a way of exporting areas of the canvas as a file for various uses.
When it was pointed out that this was essenailly the same as a page type tool it became a multi-purpose tool, once that happened then it was pointed out that it would be a good idea to allow one to organize, renumber and export as individual files and some other features.
Master artboards are not yet available and placing mutilple page pdf as multiple artboard documents are also not here yet but it might be in the future. It would make a lot of sense as you point out.
But if Adobe did this for AI then they would probably be compelled to bring editting capabilities to pdfs placed in ID and that might be a big task. So it might take sometime for this to happened.
Of course it may never happen.
I think it would help AI and ID if AI alone had this capability and AI files could then be smart objects in ID.

Does anyone know how to open a multi page pdf (created in cs5 illustrator - i forgot to save the ai file)
in cs5 in the original layout? I am trying to open it and cs5 will only open individual pages.

When you're only getting individual pages, your PDF obviously has been saved with "Illustrator editability" opion turned off. In this case you're out of luck. You can get the paths, but no effects or the like.

How Can i Make A Multipage Pdf in Cs5

Hi i was using Photoshop Cs3 in work and they upgraded all the photoshop versions to CS5 . Now i can't find where i can create a multipage pdf. I was using the pdf tool so often it's important for me. I'm stuck thanks for the helps.

Illustrator CS5 docs open as PDFs in CS5.1

I just got a new computer at work, and my Adobe software was updated. I am now running Illustrator CS5.1, but all of my docs are from CS5. When I try to open a file with multiple artboards, it gives me the 'Open PDF' dialog box and asks me to choose a page to open (each art board is treated as a page)
How can I open my files as Illustrator docs, with all artboards visable? Any help is much, much, much appreciated.

All files with multiple artboards? Also new files?
Do you just double click them? What happens if you open through other ways?
How did you transfer the files to your new computer?
What about file size - did it change? Anything suspicius about the file size?

Placing Multipage PDF only (not editable)

but I want to place only my PDF so I can relink it when needed, do you have idea or another script?

that's not possible using this workflow since the data becomes native AI data and al relation to the source file is lost.

Open a pdf in Photoshop CS5 shows jpg - but no grafic

I have a handbook opened in Photoshop CS5 and I can see the jpg images of the handbook.
But not the grafic scematic images.
I am not aware if these are in svg or whatever.
How can I get access to those grafics?
Yes, I may open a page and copy a grafic,
but I would like to get the original content.

If you are opening a PDF in Photoshop and having a problem, then the Photoshop forum is the place to ask. This has noothing to do with Acrobat.

Problem with saving pdf in CS5 and opening it in CS4

I have just got an Illustrator CS5 – my colleague’s works in CS4. We are always working directly in pdf-format.
If I make a pdf in CS5, my colleagues can’t open this pdf in Illustrator CS4.
I know that I can save to CS4 if I work in AI-format, but I would like to continue working in pdf.
Have any of your tried the same and can you help me with this? Thanks

It could have been so nice if it was possible to decide which version I would save my pdf in like it is possible in Autodesk products to save to an older version of there dwg-files.
All can read pdf but there are so few who can read AI. So If I want to work in CS5, I have to save in AI to my CS4 colleaques and in pdf to my pdf-reading customers.

It's not a complicated pdf, just 15 pages of it. If I have to individually open each page to alter one word on each, it probably takes the profit margin out of the job.
It seems such a basic thing to be able to do, there have been many posts on the internet looking for a solution, yet they won't do it. Why has it not been included?
Can I open multiple pages in InDesign? I never use it but if it's easier...

Multipage pdf in photoshop cs5

I've upgraded from PS CS2 to CS5 - now I'm missing the option to compile multipaged pdf out from PS. I know for sure that bridge will compile psd's to one single pdf but bridge seems not to embed fonts used in a psd. And yes, I know that PS is imaging software and not a layout program. But why is that feature from CS2 replaced that ugly way in CS5? Thx for your replies!

Yes, the latest versions of Photoshop have less than desired PDF capabilities.
Depending on what you need done, Bridge may be an alternative. I've never had trouble with Bridge not embedding fonts and as a check I just created a psd document with 7 fonts and the pdf of that file ( via Bridge CS4) looks just fine. I also just used Bridge to create a multi-page pdf document from several psd files, with each psd file having numerous different fonts, and all was fine. Maybe you have a font management issue on your system.

Sorry for the inconvenience that has caused to you.
Please let me know if you have tried converting any other PDF to word with Reader.
Alos, please sign up at "https://cloud.acrobat.com/" using your Adobe ID credentials. Click on 'ExportPDF' tab and upload the PDF that you want to convert to Word.
Let me know if this converts fine.

Adobe Illustrator CC (CS6, CS5.1) incorrectly opens a PDF file.

I have a problem. The customer sent me a graphic in PDF, which he wanted for us to print on textiles. I opened the graphics in Adobe Illustrator CC, edited and put into print.
After a customer complained about the flag at us and when we found out where she could be a mistake, I found that Adobe Illustrator can not open the PDF correctly. With this error, I met for the first time. More can be seen on video here: http://screenr.com/2ZUN

This is a bug Illustrator? Because PDF file is correct PDFX/1a file.
Or is there any other way to open a PDF file in order to keep the look?

It's not really a bug. It's an uneducated customer (what a surprise). :+)
Now you have something to add to your document "how to prepare files" for your service.
That's what I have,
but what I say. No one that does not follow.
When we say that we need the data in a different format,
let us send graphics otherwise, most will say that it will be printed
elsewhere, where these "other requirements" does not require them.
But it is already a different thing.
I just have to hope that this created PDF files will not be much, because
for the last 5 years since opening the PDF files in Illustrator and regulates I had no problem (to small gradients, which I solved by saving PDF and Postscript file Jeko that open in Adobe Illustrator)

Multipage PDF back for CS4?

Hi guys,
I know that I should be asking this in the Photoshop forum, but you guys are so much nicer and knowledgeable.
I downloaded the optional plugin zip from Adobe, but it does not include PDF presentation. In our workflow, we open a card template (PSD) and populate it with the clients images and text. These are double sided/creased cards, so in the past we would simply choose automate/pdf presentation and choose multipage pdf and be done.
With CS4, we have to save the files to our desktop, then open bridge, select the files, click on output and change the settings to create the pdf.
As nice as the new output module in bridge is, we work in a production environment and this is really slowing us down.
I know that we could just keep using CS3 for these tasks, but I would love to find a solution in CS4.
Any suggestions? thanks

Are you still on an earlier version? From what I have seen, simple contact sheets still can be made in bridge.
The only difference I see is the sheet is saved as pdf, instead of jpg or other raster type.
As a pdf it can be printed from any program that can load a pdf, which is what you would do with a jpg anyway. The benefit though is the pdf is totally editable in illustrator.
BTW, I am using CS5... OH also it will do multipage pdf's
Edit: Playing with it a bit, I did find a major drawback. It does not do a picture package.

Not able to open a PDF file in Creative Cloud Illustrator. It shows missing links and so forth

I'm working on CS5 and saving my AI files as PDF. This is all for print, I have created the outlines, and flattened transparency between an image I had placed in on the PDF. My CreativeCLoud AI is not able to open the PDF. It shows that it is missing links. How do I fix this?

Acrobat 9.4.2 update destroyed ability to open 3D PDFs

I've used your products for quite a long while now. And by not being from the USA, I had to pay quite a lot more money than my American colleagues - for the same products. Although quite a few of these products were handicapped by the fact that I don't use US keyboard layout and most of the shortcuts simply don't work.
I bought CS4 when it came out, and found that besides a few new features that could have been included in regular updates, nothing worth mentioning was new. To my surprise, PS CS4 couldn't use all the RAM in my new and quite expensive Mac Book Pro that I (at that time) bought especially to run Adobe CS4. Not to even mention the 64 bit issues.
Now I bought CS5 (download version).
And to my surprise, not only did it not include Acrobat X, which I don't really care about, but I also couldn't download Acrobat Pro 9 installer from anywhere.
Would you like me to mention the fact that all the other CS5 programmes, that now can use all of my RAM and should run much faster, now run slower than CS4 that I run from a system that I backed up on an external USB disk? Because I can mention that, if you want me to.
So I figured - what will Adobe do next to annoy the hell out of me?
And it didn't take you long.
Because after my last Acrobat 9 update to 9.4.2 I can now no longer open 3D PDFs. Instead, I can see a "3d parsing error occured" message
What's the deal, guys? Do I have to buy a 199,99 € plugin for it to work properly? Will this be solved in CS7? Do I have to switch to Windows?

Working now for 7h (OK, for about 2h the PC could be left alone) the problem has been solved:
Two more attempts to start with Acro 9.3 version from the CS5 DVD and then update to 9.4.2 in one step were not successful. Thw shortcut to bypass three minor levels (.0 to .3) turned out to become a lengthy detour!
In addition, FrameMaker had no idea about Acrobat and hence Save As PDF did not work.
Then decided not only to uninstall Acrobat, but also to remove the Acrobat folder (as Bil@VT suggest in the mean time - but I did not look at the e-mails yet now).
Start with the installation of Acro 9.0 from the TCS2 DVD: everything OK, setup of the various preferences and the Adobe Acrobat printer settings. FrameMaker knows about Acrobat now.
Update to 9.2 and check: still all OK.
Update to 9.4.2 and check: the preferences were still OK, but the Adobe Acrobat printer settings had to be re-established.
The only preference which is not persistant is Units & Guides > Page & Ruler Units: cm. This always falls back to inches, because I use the englisch UI. It sticks to mm when using the German UI. Adobe has never heard that metric units are common also in english speaking countries (well CH is not...)

Why does some text convert to outlines when opening a PDF in AI?

I often have to open PDFs saved from InDesign CS5 in Illustrator CS5 (Mac). These PDFS are saved from InDesign using Press or PDFX1-a settings.
When I open them in AI, I get the warning that "to preserve appearance, some text has been outlined".
Of course, I do not want this to happen.
The text that gets outlined is nothing special. It is seemingly at random within a paragraph or within a cell of a table. In the screen shot below, live text has the blue underline; outlined text does not.
I can see no rationale for it. There is no transparency involved. Just black text on no background. There is no special "appearance" that needs to be preserved. Fonts are all Adobe OTF (Myriad Pro shown below).
Can anyone explain why this happens?

PDFs are not supposed to be edited as a rule.
Lots of odd things can happen to text (but also other objects) when you open a PDF - that is not a pdf with the editable Illustrator file saved within it - and try to edit it.
Illustrator is not a general purpose editor of pdf files.
PDF files are supposed to be an end-format, not a format that you edit.
What happens to text in a pdf when opened in Illustrator is perfectly normal. There isn't really much you can do about it except recreate the text in Illustrator from scratch, with the desired font, and re-export to the pdf-version you need.
